Put your creativity at work and create simple or professional flash cards in a matter of minutes.

Education and intelligence are an important part of our life. Without them, we would be only some big creatures, that lack in intellectual talents. Even from ancient times, people realized that education is important, so they built schools and universities.

It took little time before some very intelligent people appeared, that told others about the universe and what it has to offer.Time passed by, technology evolved and the education process was revolutionized by the appearance of computers.

They became a largely used educational tool, allowing both kids and adults to learn biology, geography or a foreign language in an interactive mode that uses images, videos, and audio.

WordDeck is an educational software, allowing you to create unique flash cards, ready to use in a lot of different environments.

The Looks

WordDeck has a very simple interface, allowing you access only to some very basic functions. This is both a good and a bad thing: good because you can quickly create, save and edit the flash cards, but bad because it lacks in advanced options, like flash card enhancement and customization.

WordDeck does not use too much space on your desktop, and its main windows are resizable, so you can make it even smaller than its default size.

The main interface contains the working panel, where you create the flash cards, and a preview window, where you can visualize the flash cards you already created.

The Works

WordDeck is pretty intuitive when in comes to using it. All you need are some pictures and a lot of imagination, and you can create some beautiful flash cards, that can be used anywhere you want.

The main target for WordDeck are the teachers and therapists, people that want to get in touch with their audience by using both images and words.

Flash cards are thus great in this line of work, but not only here. WordDeck can save your flash cards in a format that can be read by your iPhone or iPad, so you can create some neat presentations and show them to your friends.

I saw this as a nice feature, but told myself that it couldn't possibly work, since you may need some special programs in order to visualize the flash cards.

Well, I grabbed my iPhone and was surprised to see that the flash cards are saved in a native format, so they can be transferred at any time, and viewed without problems.

When creating a flash card, the most important piece is the picture. All your presentation will be based on this, so you must choose it carefully. After that, you can write as much as you want about the image, and present its meaning, importance, or functionality, if the object portrayed there has one.

I think that the preview window is a pretty useful feature, because you can see where you've done something wrong, and correct it, without affecting the file, if the flash card was already saved.

I also liked the fact that you can add an unlimited number of flash cards, the only thing stopping you is a deadline or your own imagination.

Of course, you can also change the fonts, if you want your flash cards to a have a specific one. All you have to do is choose one from the font panel at the bottom of the main window.  The exporting process is pretty quick.

The flash cards can be exported to 6 different resolutions, varying from 320x400 (the standard iPhone resolution) to 800x600, which gives you a lot more detail and is better to use on bigger displays.

I mainly used the smallest resolution, and the results were still good. The picture was viewed clearly, and the text was displayed correctly.I could not test this on an iPad, but based on the experience with the iPhone, I think that the higher resolution of the iPad will make it an even greater teaching tool.

WordDeck can also be used as a literacy exercising tool at home. WordDeck can provide your kids with a good way to learn new words by showing them their graphic representation.

The Good

A simple interface and a unique learning pattern makes WordDeck a recommended tool for flash card creation. The application allowed the creation of 20 flash cards in 4 minutes, mostly because of its simplicity and ease of use.

The Bad

Simple isn't always better though. The interface is dull, the program is not so gifted in features and you can save your work in only 6 formats.

A good thing to do would be to add support for more video formats, and also allow you to customize the flash cards, by adding them both style and character.

The Truth

Although it has a lot of room for improvement, WordDeck is a good program for flash card creation.

The support for the iPhone and iPad are great additions, and I would like to see more of them in the future. All we can hope is that its development doesn't stop here. This article is also available in Spanish: Lo Mejor de la Creación de Tarjetas Flash
