When it comes to most storage units, especially those that end up on the inside of a desktop or laptops, hardware makers are hardly concerned with aesthetics. When it comes to external devices, however, especially those meant to be portable, good looks are quite relevant in end-users’ decision to buy or not acquire a certain product. Knowing this, A-Data came up with quite a unique portable HDD design and, about two weeks ago, unleashed the first batch of units based on it.

The series of portable hard disk drives that A-Data released is known as the SH02. These products employ the 2.5-inch form factor, come in capacities of 320GB and 500GB and communicate with host PCs via the USB 2.0 interface. Additionally, buyers of either model will be allowed to download a 60-day free trial of Norton Internet Security, HDDtoGO and OstoGO.

As already mentioned, the SH02 drives are constructed with a very unique design. By means of the In-Mold Foil (IMF) technology, the enclosure is provided with not only a distinct feel when held in the hand, but also with fingerprint, scratch and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, A-Data offers three color options that suit different tastes, in order to address as large a consumer base as possible. The actual colors are black, white and pink.

"We search for any possibility of applying new technology and combine with the latest design elements and details to come up with innovative storage products that differentiate ours from other competitors’," C.K. Hung, vice president of A-DATA Technology Product Planning Group, said back when the drives were first announced. "SH02 is a perfect example of combining new surface finishing technology with a designer look, creating a practical yet trendy portable HDD to the market."

The SH02 2.5-inch portable platter spinners are now said to be shipping, priced at 54.90 Euro for the 320GB model and at 69.90 Euro for the 500GB version.
