Last weekend I found an interesting defragmenter that wasn't quite up to the task of entering the compared review, but I checked it on my "to do" list, and here it is: mst Defrag.

This program's current version is numbered 1.9.30.76, I got it as a 15 days trial, and the installation kit of the Home Edition is 1.7MB in size. Setting it up was no big deal, so nobody should have problems with that, as far as I can say. Now, let's jump straight to the interface and features of this small tool!

mst Defrag has an interface that's extremely easy to use, cute enough and having a simple classic design. The main window of this program has a menu bar, a small toolbar and, of course, a work area, composed by a drive panel and contents view.

This small application claims to be the one and only proactive defragmentation tool available in the known universe, and I have no proof that this is not the truth...but what is this so-called "proactive defragmentation"?

The program runs silently in the background, monitoring all file changes on your disc and performing disk optimization tasks silently, with minimum impact on your system's performance. This is not only the claim of mst Defrag's producer, but also my own conclusion after almost two days of use, and I must say that I didn't feel any impact on my computer's performance.

Once we get to the feature part, I must say that you have complete control over this program's operation. For example, you can only monitor some of your computer's partitions, and defragment the others manually from time to time.

The Defragmentation menu has the options that you will usually find in such a program: analyze, check, monitor, start and stop defragmentation of the currently selected partition. Everything here is as easy as it gets, and before the conclusions I have two more features to tell you about.

Each good defragmenter should have some disk viewing features, and mst Defrag didn't forget about this. I am talking about the Cluster Viewer and the Drive Information tools, of course. Apart from them, you can also use the Fragmented Files view window to see where the problem is.

This is it - easy to use, simple and efficient. It may not be an ultimate defragmentation tool, but for the average home user, it's the best deal you can get - only 15$...and the 15 days of trial, of course!

The Good

mst Defrag is the defragmenting program that you can install and forget about for the rest of your life. Apart from that, it's easy to use, cheap and reliable.

The Bad

This program doesn't have more manual defragmentation strategies available, and there is no scheduling available (anyway, the proactive defragmentation mode should take care of that and make scheduling useless, at least for this program).

The Truth

mst Defrag Home Edition is no less than the best defragmentation program for the home user when I think about the price and what you get for it. Don't wait any longer, grab it now!
