Memo

Since their introduction, Gists have been one of the most useful features of GitHub since they allowed developers from all over the world to effortlessly share anything from code snippets to notes, to-do lists, and so forth.

That said, if you find yourself relying on GitHub Gists on a daily basis, then you might be interested in Memo. To put it as simply as possible, Memo is a note-taking application that allows you to synchronize your notes/sheets with your own GitHub Gists.

Right off the bat, it’s worth noting that Memo is still a very young project (still in beta), so it’s somewhat limited in the features department. For example, at heart, the app is not much more than a simple note-taking app, so you should not expect comprehensive text editing features. Be that as it may, the app may still be extremely appealing for a narrow niche of GitHub users.

To get started, you need to install the app and log in using your valid GitHub credentials. Once logged in, a pop-up window will appear that requires you to authorize Memo (to provide it with read and write access to your GitHub Gists).

The GUI is quite modern-looking and even features two themes (Dark and Light). The app’s main GUI element is, of course, the side panel on the right. From the side panel, you can create new sheets, or manage, and search for already existing ones, manage add-ons, and access the app’s Settings section.

As mentioned before, the app is quite spartan, especially when it comes to automation features. This means that you should be prepared to “push” all the changes, or “pull” them just like using a typical version control system. Another advantage of Memo is the fact that you can use it offline and save all your changes, and push them to GitHub later when you’re online. Last but not least, it’s worth noting that you can also import and export your files in and to Markdown.

Taking everything into account, Memo has to be one of the most interesting GitHub-related tools out there despite its overall simplicity. Sure, it won’t appeal to a broad range of GitHub users, but if using Gists a lot is your thing, then you should definitely give it the chance to prove its worth.
