In 2017, Zettlr started as a small side project. Our aim was to create a Markdown editor that would enable writers of all kinds to produce better texts faster. We wanted to remove friction in the writing process, make important features first-class citizens that other programs were treating as an aside, and offer an affordable solution.Zettlr is not a simple Markdown editor anymore. It is a full-fledged writing workbench. Zettlr offers hundreds of tools to keep your notes organized, produce long-form text, and create production-ready PDFs. Whatever your textual needs are, Zettlr has the right solutions. It has become the industry standard for academia, with researchers from leading universities around the world trusting it to produce their texts. And it continuously grows.Despite Zettlr's fast growth, we continue to honor our commitments: Zettlr remains Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). We fully embrace the Open Source environment that has evolved around academia. Zettlr integrates with Pandoc, R, Quarto, and other scientific apps.However, while we believe that software should be free of charge, developing a reliable productivity app is expensive.
