The WinRM protocol allows access to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) data in a secure a fast way. Access to WMI data through DCOM is still supported. The WinRM protocol improves speed, efficiency, configuration and security compared to DCOM when monitoring remote (virtual) Windows machines. WinRM uses both NTLM and Kerberos (domain) authentication natively. After authentication, AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is used for data interchange.
  • Support for secure (HTTPs) and non-secure (HTTP) WinRM protocol.
  • Faster execution of Windows checks, more secure, easier to configure.
  • Support for legacy DCOM protocol. Allow fallback to DCOM if WinRM is not supported on the monitored Windows machine.

  • WhatsApp Alerts:
  • Added support for WhatsApp alerts, through Twilio's communications platform as a service (CPaaS). Requires a Twilio subscription.
  • SMS Alerts -
  • Twilio SMS support added. Twilio is a market leader in communications platform as a service (CPaaS), and has worldwide coverage. Twilio is now the ActiveXperts preferred SMS alert protocol. Requires a Twilio subscription.
  • The SMS/HTTP SMS Alert protocol is now compatible with the popular 'SpryngSMS' provider.
  • Compatible with Auron SMS Server v.2021R2, which was released in september 2021. Also compatibility with other versions of Auron SMS Server (v.2020 and v.2018), as well as most recent versions of ActiveXperts SMS Messaging Server (v.2018, v.2016R2 and v.2016).
  • MSN Live Alerts:
  • MSN Live alerts are no longer supported.
  • Alerts:
  • You can now use a new variable in your Alert Message Template: <%FOLDER%>. This variable holds the full path of the Folder where the Check resides.
  • Address Book:
  • There's a new default distribution group in the Address Book named 'Support', which is the default group in a new configuration. The default group can be changed. In previous versions, there was no default group for new Contacts.
  • Checks Scheduling:
  • Checks that were configured to execute once a week or longer, were sometimes executed earlier. This has been fixed.
  • The engine's Check Schedule sub-process now uses a divide and conquer approach of scheduling for sets of checks that are to be executed at exactly the same time. This boosts the performance of the engine
  • Environmental checks -
  • Native support for AVTech RoomAlert 12S and AVTech RoomAlert 32S, two new models in the AVTech environmental monitoring device product catalog.
  • HTTP check:
  • HTTP checks on URL's ending with a '#' character were not working. This was especially a problem for URL's that redirect to a URL with a trailing '#' character. This has been fixed.
  • Added support for TLS1.3, the newest security protocol for HTTPs.
  • Search pattern now displays the search pattern in its result.
  • User Agent strings are now logged for debugging purposes by the HTTP Diagnostic Tool.
  • Network Traffic check:
  • There's a new Network Traffic check type available, to monitor the network traffic and bandwidth of a Windows workstation or server.
  • Ping/TCP check:
  • In some situations, the Ping/TCP check reported an odd result after some time, interfering with other Ping/TCP checks. This has been solved.
  • POP3 check:
  • The POP3 mailbox check now has the ability to count the number of messages in a Mailbox, for instance to see if a forward works as it should.
  • SNMP Trap Receive check:
  • MIB Files are now stored in the ProgramData folder instead of the ProgramFiles folder.
  • To use Reverse Lookup of OID's, you must now specify in which MIB file(s) you want ActiveXperts to lookup. In previous version, all MIB files were traversed in order to find the OID. The new approach improves the performance of the lookup operation.
  • Removed the option to paste a Check Frequency to SNMP Trap Receive Checks. This operation disabled the Trap Receiver Check by mistake.
  • Manager:
  • The 'Windows Credentials' column has been renamed to 'Credentials'; now, all credentials are displayed (e.g. web credentials, FTP credentials), not only Windows credentials.
  • The 'Paste Properties' command now has a checkbox to paste 'Windows Credentials' to multiple checks or Folder(s). This allows administrator to easily change Windows Credentials for a selection of Checks.
  • In case the Reports&Graphs module is disabled, there are no more 'Statistical Database' information/warning messages in the Log of the Manager. In previous versions, Statistical Database log entries were shown, mentioning that these database operations were skipped.
  • New columns available in the Manager's Check's View: e-mail recipients and SMS recipients.
  • Reports and Graphs:
  • With the Import of a configuration file (CONFIG.SDF), the 'Max Database Size=4000' is added for users that use a SQL Compact statistical database. The tag was already there in v.2021 and v.2019, but not in older versions. So now, the database can have a maximum of 4000MB instead of the default 128MB.
  • Database synchronization failed in MySQL8: due to a non-escaped backslash, synchronization of the Config.sdf Database with the Statistical Database could fail.
  • When changing the database connection string without using the Wizard, the OLDE DB error was not displayed in case the connection could not be established. This has been fixed.
  • Better MySQL error reporting. In previous versions, the MySQL error message was not provided on an open database failure.
  • The MySQL statistical database cleanup operation failed for MySQL and higher. This has been fixed.
  • The Graph Viewer application now requires .NET Framework 4.0. This framework is included in all .NET Framework 4.x frameworks. .NET Framework 4.x is installed on almost all Windows operating systems by default.
  • In previous versions, the Graph Viewer required .NET Framework 2.0, which is not installed by default on most recent Windows computers. It required a separate .NET Framework 2.0 installation.
  • Web Access:
  • You can now install/configure ActiveXperts Web Access without Microsoft Web Server (IIS) installed. From the 'ActiveXperts Web Access Configuration Tool', you can now launch a PowerShell script that installs and configures Web Server (IIS) on your Microsoft Windows Server in one go.
  • The Custom Date Range field only worked after a screen refresh. This has been fixed.
  • A cookie is introduced to store the default Sort and Filter settings, for each view.
  • In the List View, the 'Host' field is now available.
  • In the v.2019 compatible ActiveXperts Web Access feature (based on XSL), the auto-refresh option was missing. This has been added.
  • You an now restore the factory default web interface by completely removing the 'C:ProgramDataActiveXpertsNetwork MonitorWebRoot' folder (or similar). The folder will be restored from the 'C:Program FilesActiveXpertsNetwork MonitorSysTplWebRoot' folder (or similar).
  • Configuration:
  • Export to CSV: In case SMS alerts were exported to CSV, the e-mail recipient addresses were exported instead of the SMS recipient addresses. This has been fixed.
  • Export to CSV: Now, the check's authentication parameters (e.g. Windows authentication, web authentication, etc.) are now also included in the exported CSV file.
  • Possible crash in Manager and server caused by consistency conflict in the CONFIG.SDF configuration database; in case the 'TreeConfig' table contained a Check that didn't have a listing in the 'Nodes' table, it could crash the Engine and Manager application. This has been fixed.
  • The Engine now cleans up the 'TreeConfig' table periodically in the CONFIG.SDG database, also performing a consistency check. Orphan nodes are deleted.
  • ActiveXperts now offers a service to merge two configurations into one. Use the 'File->Restore' command from the Manager application, and click on the 'FAQ Q6600030' URL for more information and instructions.
  • The Configuration API can now properly Save a Node during a FindFirstNode/FindNextNode iteration. In previous versions, FinexNextNode faled after a Save operation inside an iteration. This has been fixed.
  • Fixed: In previous versions, scheduled jobs were executed during a Maintenance schedule. This has been fixed.

  • Folder check:
  • Added option to configure how a Folder Change should be cleared: either manually, or automatically. In is configrable at a global level, for all Folder Change checks.
  • FTPS check:
  • Fixed: The FTPS check sometimes reported a false error 'Hostname could not be resolved'..
  • Fixed: The FTPS File Existence check retrieved the full file instead of just the file size.
  • HTTP check:
  • Added option to set a User Agent string. In previous versions, some URL's could not be checked because the ActiveXperts default User Agent string was denied.
  • SSH check:
  • Fixed: In previous versions, the StrErr Mapping setting ('If StdErr is not empty, the result will be Uncertain/Error/Success') was not stored in the configuration. As a result, SSH based checks that had StdErr output (for instance because of a syntax error in the script) always went into an Uncertain state, regardless of the StdErr Mapping setting.
  • This has been fixed.

  • Fixed: a check with multiple Schedules only showed the first Schedule in the Manager, although it was as expected by the Engine.

New in ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 Build 860.9011 (Jan 1, 2019)

  • - Web Access -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 features a new responsive, mobile first web interface, named 'ActiveXperts Web Access'. It allows users you to see those parts of the Network Monitor configuration that they have access to. ActiveXperts Web Access focusses on Network Monitors on Folders. Each Folder in the Network Monitor configuration can be published, each one having its own credentials. Each Folder can have one or more so called 'Filters', so users can filter on different aspects, for instance displaying only Failure results, or displaying only VMware and Citrix checks, or combined.
  • - ActiveXperts Network Monitor Service (Engine) -
  • Alternate Credentials: In Network Monitor v.2019, there's now a fallback mode for alternate credentials: if there's already a connection to a remote server, and alternate credentials do not work, then Network Monitor will fallback to the existing credentials. This avoids many 'Uncertain' results with description 'Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user'.
  • FIX: The ActiveXperts Network Monitor Service can now be restarted from the Manager without the 'Run As Administrator' option. ActiveXperts now uses the Operating System to ask to 'Run As Administrator' automatically.
  • FIX: The engine failed to restart a service (as part of a Check's 'Action' properties) when a service displayname (e.g. 'Print Spooler') was used rather than its formal name ('spooler'). This has been fixed.
  • - Manager -
  • The Manager provides a function to 'Find' checks in the configuration. The 'Find' function is available from the context menu. You can search on (sub) strings in the following fields: 'Displayname', 'Host' and 'Notes'.
  • The 'Activity View' has been renamed to 'Real-Time Activity View', and has 5 differenet views: 'All Activity', 'System', 'Alerting/Actions', 'Monitoring (All)', 'Monitoring (Error/Failed)', 'Monitoring (Uncertain)'
  • Number of entries in the 'Real-Time Activity View's is now configurable.
  • The Real-Time Activity Views are now much faster; in previous versions, the log was read by the Manager, line-by-line; now, the full log is read into memory in one go, speeding up the performance of the Manager application.
  • FIX: In the 'Global Credentials' tab ('Options' menu) , the deletion of an account sometimes failed, or another account was deleted instead of the selected one(s). This has been fixed.
  • FIX: With configurations with over 7000 checks, Check results were sometimes displayed as 'Not Processed' which was not correct; they were processed, but due to a display buffer overflow, wrong information was displayed. This has been fixed.
  • FIX: An Restore of a configuration with a large number of Distribution Groups (over a 100) made the Manager crash due to a buffer overflow. This has been fixed.
  • - Adress Book -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 features a full featured Address Book, supporting Contacts and Contact Groups. Each Contact holds the name of an Administrator, and can have multiple E-mail addresses, SMS addresses, etc.
  • You can only assign Contact(s) or Contact Groups(s) to a Check's Alerting properties. In previous versions, it was allowed to assign straight e-mail addresses or SMS mobile numbers to the Check's Alerting properties.
  • - Configuration -
  • In ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019, you can now export the configuration to a CSV file that you can load into Microsoft Excel. It displays all Check related information in verbose- and non-verbose format, and helps you to find inconsistencies in your configuration.
  • FIX: You can now change the computername of your ActiveXperts Network Monitor server without changing the registry. In previous versions, you had to change the ProgDataServer registry entry. This registry entry has been eliminated.
  • FIX: If the manager points to a remote installed Network Monitor instance, but the instance is (temporarily) not available, you now have the option to connect to another (local) instance. In previous versions, the Manager simply quit and there was no way to connect to another instance.
  • - Logging -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 has improved logging facilities. This applies to Statistical Database logging, Application Logging and Real-Time Activity Logging.
  • ActiveXperts now supports application logging to Microsoft SQL Servers with TLS enabled. In previous version, Microsoft SQL Server was already supported but only with TLS disabled;
  • - Real-Time Activity View -
  • The 'Activity View' has been renamed to 'Real-Time Activity View', and has 5 different views: 'All Activity', 'System', 'Alerting/Actions', 'Monitoring (All)', 'Monitoring (Error/Failed)', 'Monitoring (Uncertain)'
  • Number of entries in the Real-Time Activity Views is now configurable.
  • You can now use custom colors in the Real-Time Activity Views. Color preferences are configured per user.
  • - Maintenance -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 now supports multiple global Maintenance Plans, selectable by each individual Check. This allows Administrators to define a custom Maintenance Plan for a group of Checks. In previous versions, a custom Maintenance Plan had to be configured manually for each Check.
  • - Statistical Database -
  • ActiveXperts now supports statistical data logging to Microsoft SQL Servers with TLS enabled. In previous version, Microsoft SQL Server was already supported but only with TLS disabled;
  • The Statistical Database Migration Wizard allows you to modify the Database Connection String before the actual migration to MS SQL Server or MySQL is performed. This allows you to apply specific or custom settings;
  • You can choose to use a new, empty Statistical Database in the 'Restore Configuration' wizard.
  • - Reports-
  • 'Detailed Reports' are now called 'Indicent Reports'. The name 'Incident Report' better describes the Report's purpose;
  • FIX: In the 'ActiveXperts Reports and Graphs Configuration Tool', there was no way to select a custom XSL stylesheet in the selection box to allow custom make-up. This has been fixed;
  • FIX: The Incident Report doesn't show any transition from Success->Error->Success anymore. This is how it should be, because an 'Error' is just a hickup. A few 'Errors' in a row make a 'Failure'. Only in case of 'Failure' there's something wrong.
  • - Alert Actions -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 now supports PowerShell (.ps1) actions. This means, it can react on failures by executing a PowerShell script. In previous versions, only executables (.exe), batch-jobs (.cmd, .bat) and VBScript programs (.vbs) were supported.
  • - Alert Messages (Notifications) -
  • 'Notifications' are now called 'Alert Messages';
  • You cannot assign individual Alert addresses (e-mail address, SMS mobile number) to a Check's Alert properties anymore. Instead, you need to assign Address Book Contact Groups or Contacts. This simplifies Alert management.
  • - E-mail Alert Messages -
  • Improved Office 365 integration.
  • FIX: In previous versions of Network Monitor, a secundary SMTP server was tried even if it was disabled. This has been fixed.
  • - SMS Alert Messages -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor was not able to use HTTP Channels of ActiveXperts SMS Messaging Server to send out SMS alerts over HTTP. This is now possible.
  • - SNMP Trap Alert Messages -
  • FIX: SNMP Trap Alert Messages were not received by 3rd party SNMP Manager if the body size was longer than 255 characters. This has been fixed; messages longer than 255 characters are now truncated.
  • - Disk Space check -
  • Network Monitor now supports Windows-based NAS storage devices. In previous versions, the Disk Space check was based on Microsoft WMI, which is not supported on external Windows-based NAS storage devices. This has been enhanced in Network Monitor v.2019.
  • - SNMP Trap Receiver check -
  • The SNMP Trap Receiver check has been redesigned; you can now match against predefined values. The SNMP Trap Receiver filters on OID and discards unexpected ones. In previous versions, all OID's were accepted. This makes the ActiveXperts SNMP Trap Receiver much more useful.
  • - VMware check -
  • FIX: VMware checks failed if the password contained one of the following characters: '<', '>', '&', ''' or '"'. This has been fixed.
  • - Citrix Xen check -
  • FIX: Citrix Xen checks failed if the password contained one of the following characters: '<', '>', '&', ''' or '"'. This has been fixed.
  • - Event Log check -
  • FIX: Matching the Description of an event failed in the scenario where the local monitoring Windows server did not have the Event Log resource DLL of the remote monitored Windows server. This has been fixed.
  • - Printer check -
  • A Printer 'Browse' function is added to the Manager, allowing users to query printers on a remote server, rather than typing in the literal name of the printer.
  • In previous versions of network Monitor, you could only check for offline/online status of a printer. You can now check on Printer Status values (including 'Idle', 'Stopped Printing', 'Offline') and Error Status values (including 'Low Paper', 'No Paper', 'Low Toner', 'No Toner', 'Door Open', 'Jammed', 'Service Requested', 'Output Bin Full').
  • - Antivirus and Internet Security Suite updates 2019 -
  • ActiveXperts Network Monitor 2019 now supports the following Antivirus- and Internet Security Suites (new): Avira, Web Root, ZoneAlarm

  • VBScript:
  • The VBScript scripts folder has been renamed. In previous versions of Network Monitor, the folder was located in the 'Scripts' folder and was called 'Monitor'. The folder still resides in the 'Scripts' folder, but is now called 'Monitor (vbs). With this new name, grouping of scripts in the 'Scripts' folder is more clear.
  • Manager application:
  • The Manager application now has Office 2003 style menu's and toolbars. Both are dockable. The toolbar is customizable;
  • The Manager application now gives a warning upon start when the Network Monitor service is not running. When the service is not started, you will be prompted to start the service;
  • If you choose 'Monitor Now' for a check but the service is not running, you are prompted to start the service;

  • SNMP Get check - in previous versions of Network Monitor, there was a small memory leak for SNMP checks based on the Integer data type. This memory leak has been solved in v.7.2;
  • Text Logging - in previous versions of Network Monitor, the 'Maximum Log Size' value did not work for text logging. This has been solved in v.7.2;
  • In previous versions of Network Monitor, the SMS/HTTP notifications were only working from the Manager's Test button. However, when the sevice had to send out an alert because of a failed check, it did not work because the SMS/HTTP configuration information cluld not be fetched from the configuration database. This has been fixed in v.7.2.

New in ActiveXperts Network Monitor 7.1.9.330 (Oct 29, 2009)

  • Checks (Generic):
  • You can now specify how to handle 'uncertain' results for each individual check. In previous version of Network monitor, it could only be set at a global level, for all checks
  • You can now inverse the result of a check. This applies to all check types. For instance, one may PING a server to check its availability (i.e., a successful PING means: success), where others may want to make sure that a server is offline (i.e. a failed PING means: success).
  • You can now view the result history for each check by choosing 'View Result History' from the check's context menu.
  • New built-in checks:
  • New Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam checks - a few new Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam packages/releases are supported, including the following
  • McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009

  • Light
  • Motion
  • Smoke
  • Door
  • Resistance
  • Switch (NC)
  • Switch (NO)
  • For all of the above checks, a Senturion Environmental Monitor (manufactured by Sensatronics LLC) is required.
  • New MSMQ (Microsoft Message Queue) check - this new check allows user to monitor the maximum length and/or maximum size of an MSMQ queue.
  • New Serial Device check - this is a new check. The serial device check has the ability to query a device connected to the serial port of the monitoring server. The result of the check depends on the response of the serial device. USB devices that ship with a serial device driver (like most USB modems) are also supported.
  • New SNMP Receive check - a new check to receive SNMP Traps; send notifications to the administrator(s) based on the content of the received SNMP trap. Log all received traps in an OLE-DB compliant database (e.g. MS Access, MS SQL, MySQL)
  • New SSH check - a new check to run SSH script on a (remote) UNIX/LINUX machine. StdOut and/or StdErr determine the result of the check (success or error). Previous versions of Network Monitor only supported the unsecure RSH (Remote Shell) protocol.
  • Enhanced Built-in checks:
  • Directory check - You can now monitor a directory change. As soon as a directory changes (i.e. the number of files change, or a file changes), you get a notification. Another enhancement to the Directory check is the ability to select MB and GB as unit of measurement. In previous versions of Network Monitor, only MB could be used.
  • Disk Space check - You can now select MB, GB and % as unit of measurement. In previous versions of Network Monitor, only MB could be used
  • Memory check - You can now select check on Available Memory, Committed Bytes and Pages/Second. In previous versions of Network Monitor, only Available Memory could be checked
  • RSH check - The RSH check is not based on pattern matching anymore. Instead, the result is determined by a keyword ('success','error','uncertain') on the LINUX/UNIX machine. The RSH checks already defined in previous versions of Netork Monitor need to be recreated
  • Process check - You can now monitor a server for any process consuming too much memory (e.g. any process consuming more than 200 MB of RAM). In previous version of Network Monitor, you could only monitor a pre-defined process
  • SNMP Get - the 'SNMP Get' check now supports the use of MIB files, to allow users to enter alpha-numeric OID's. Load a MIB file to select your alphanumeric OID. Type and syntax are automatically extracted from the MIB database;
  • SNMP Get - there's now type checking in the Manager's configuration dialog, to prevent users from checking against an incompatible data type.
  • VBScript:
  • It is now much easier to test a VBScript check from the command line, isolated from Network Monitor. There's code for it included in all VBScript files, to call a particular function. The statement to call the function is commented out by default. By removing the comments, you can call a function from the command line (i.e. CSCRIPT.EXE) or by double clicking on the VBScript file using the Windows Explorer.
  • Notifications:
  • New SMS/HTTP protocol - the new SMS/HTTP protocol allows you to send SMS alerts through an SMS/HTTP compliant SMS provider. Users can make use of the ActiveXperts SMS Gateway (smpp.activexperts-labs.com:2775) to test this functionality.
  • Notification Groups - in previous versions of Network Monitor, the maximum number of distribution groups was limited to 24. Now, you can define an unlimited number of distribution groups. This applies to e-mail notifications, SMS notifications, Pager notifications, SNMP notifications and Network Popup notifications.
  • SNMP Trap Notifications - SNMP Trap Notifications now supports the use of MIB files, to allow users to enter alpha-numeric OID's. Load a MIB file to select your alphanumeric OID. Type and syntax are automatically extracted from the MIB database.
  • Manager application:
  • You can now view the 'Result History' for each check, so you can see instantly what happened to the check in the last few hours/days. In previous versions of Network Monitor, this could only be achieved by creating a new report.
  • A few minor changes were made to make the Manager easier to use and more intuitive.
  • Web Interface:
  • You can now have a maximum of 128 Web Views. In previous versions of Network Monitor, the maximum number of Web Views was limited to 16.
  • Users can now use the web interface with browsers other than Internet Explorer 5/x/6.x (for instance: FireFox or Internet Explorer 7.x).
  • Reports:
  • The Availability Reports do not make use of image files anymore; an Availability Report is now only just one file, which makes it easier to send it as an attachment via e-mail
  • Miscellaneous:
  • You can now clear a failure manually: select a failed check in the Manager and choose 'Clear Failure' from the context menu.
  • A selection of Diagnostic Tools is included, for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Support for more Sensatronics enviromental devices. Previous versions of Network Monitor already included support for the following Sensatronics models: EM1, E16, E8, E4, CM16. Network Monitor now also supports the Senturion, U16 and U4 models.
  • BUG FIXES:
  • Directory check - if a directory had a file > 4 GB, the directory size was showing a completely wrong value. This has been fixed in v.7.1
  • SNMP Get check - OID's with an empty value were reported as: "Unable to establish an SNMP connection. Check if the SNMP service is running on both monitoring and monitored host". Now, there's an empty value reported, as it should be.
  • The 'Delete Function' command in the 'VBScript Check' setup dialog of the Manager application was not working in previous versions of Network Monitor. This has been fixed in v.7.1;
  • In previous versions of Network Monitor, the 'Service Restart' action only worked for services that were specified by its short name (i.e. its registry key name). It now also works for service 'full' display names.
