Adobe Edge Animate Changelog

What's new in Adobe Edge Animate CC 2015.0

Jun 16, 2015
  • In-line text:
  • In the previous releases of Edge Animate, you used to type text in a popup that later appeared on Stage. In this release, you can type text directly on Stage. You can also format portions of text (referred to as text spans), which was not supported earlier.

New in Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014 4.0 (Jun 19, 2014)

  • Support for HTML5 video
  • Import sprite sheets from Flash Pro, Photoshop or other design tools
  • Linking support for DPS Articles
  • Updated actions editor
  • Copy and paste SVG artwork from Illustrator
  • Hand and Zoom tools

New in Adobe Edge Animate CC 3.0.0.322.27519 (Jan 23, 2014)

  • AUDIO SUPPORT:
  • Make some noise with your Edge Animate projects with the new ability to add audio to your projects. Using the native HTML5 audio APIs available in all modern browsers, you can bind audio events to the timeline, add audio actions to your elements, and create audio transitions for unique sound effects.
  • RESPONSIVE SCALING:
  • Making responsive Animate projects is now as simple as clicking a button. When enabled, this option allows you to scale your Animate stage up and down while maintaining its aspect ratio. Use Responsive Scaling for stand-alone Animate content, or when embedding Edge Animate compositions inside a responsive website.
  • Responsive scaling can also be used when embedding an OAM inside supported Adobe applications. Resize the content frame for the placed OAM and preview to see the results.
  • You can set Responsive Scaling in the Stage properties to "width", "height", or "both" to scale the whole composition proportionally. Aspect ratio is maintained and is determined by the ratio of stage width to stage height.
  • SCRIPT LOADING:
  • Bring in external JavaScript libraries to extend Animate with your favorite scripts.
  • Add JS File from Disk:
  • Import JS files from your local file system. These files are included in a “js” folder on saving.
  • Add JS File from URL:
  • Link to an online hosted version of your script file. All local scripts and script references are included on save, publish, and templates.
  • MOTION PATH IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Enhancements have been made to motion path editing, allowing you to easily modify motion paths applied to objects.
  • When you hover over a motion path, you see the new tool tip overlays that provide information on the keyboard commands available for motion path controls.
  • To toggle display of this overlay, press “H”:
  • Option (Mac); Alt (Windows) + click-drag: Rotates the motion path.
  • Cmd/Ctrl + Option (Mac); Ctrl + Alt (Windows) + click-drag: Scales the motion path.
  • NEW DISTRIBUTE COMMANDS:
  • New distribute commands are available from the align menu to help with aligning and positioning elements on the stage. Select three or more objects and select Modify > Distribute from the menu to access various distribute options.
  • To evenly space objects of different sizes horizontally or vertically, select Distribute > Horizontal Space or Vertical Space.
  • STAGE CENTERING:
  • Center your Animate stage within the browser window or whatever parent container it’s placed in.
  • Choose from three different options:
  • Vertical – Centers the stage based on the width of the viewport
  • Horizontal – Centers the stage based on the height of the viewport
  • Both – Centers the stage based on both the width and height of the viewport
  • TRANSPARENT POSTER IMAGE FOR OAM:
  • You now have the option when publishing an OAM file to save the poster image as a transparent PNG. This option is especially helpful when embedding Animate content inside Adobe InDesign or Adobe Muse if you want a transparent stage to overlay the design contents of your document.
  • Note: When this option is selected, the OAM appears as an empty frame when placed inside other Adobe applications. Always preview a live sample of your project to see the playback results.
  • Also be sure to set the stage color to transparent before publishing.
  • This feature currently is not compatible with PDF Folio types when publishing to DPS. To use a transparent poster image, choose Automatic, PNG or JPG Folio types.
  • CDN OPTION FOR OAM:
  • Hosting the runtime files is now available as a publish setting for OAM. If you are creating Animate content with the intent of online use (Adobe Muse or Adobe Dreamweaver) you may want to benefit from CDN hosting for the Animate runtime and jQuery. When you enable this option, your files download faster with cached hosting.
  • NEW LESSONS:
  • Two new lessons (Responsive Layout and Audio) are available for you to get started with some of the features available in this release. Check out “Getting Started” on the Welcome Screen, or Window > Lessons to view the Lessons panel.
  • JQUERY UPDATE:
  • Edge Animate now uses jQuery version 2.0.3.

New in Adobe Edge Animate 0.11.0150.19347 Preview 6.1 (Jul 28, 2012)

  • Adobe Edge preview 6.1 contains a minor update to preview 6 that resolves compatibility issues between Edge projects and the recently released Firefox 14.

New in Adobe Edge Animate 1.0.0.17040 Preview 6 (May 15, 2012)

  • User Experience Improvements:
  • Welcome Screen: The start-up screen for Edge has been redesigned to be more intuitive for users of all levels, from first-timers to veterans.
  • Lessons: Six new lessons are built into the tool, to help new users get familiar with Edge. The Lessons Panel can be accessed from the “Getting Started” tab on the Welcome Screen, or from the Window menu.
  • Topics include:
  • Start: Get going with Edge in two easy steps
  • Create: Work with shapes, text and images
  • Animate 1: Animate faster with the Pin
  • Animate 2: Animate using Keyframes
  • Extend: Loop and handle user interaction
  • Reuse: Create reusable objects with Symbols
  • Localization: In addition to English, Edge is now available in French, German, Japanese, Italian, and Spanish. To switch the language, select the ‘Change Language’ option from the Help menu. (Note: Lessons are in English only for this release).
  • Coding Improvements:
  • New Code Panel: This provides a more complete view of the actions code in your project, and also allows viewing the raw code in the actions file. In addition, it gives you a more code-oriented method of adding various event handlers in your project.
  • Full Code Mode: The code editor has been enhanced with a full code mode. This can be used to view and edit the entire actions file. To activate this mode, use the button on the top right corner of the code editor next to the “Toggle code snippets” button.
  • Publishing Improvements:
  • Publish to Adobe DPS: Easily import your compositions into the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite with Adobe InDesign CS6 (note: this feature is not supported in older versions of InDesign).
  • Publish to Apple iBooks: Similar to the Adobe DPS formatting option, compositions can be imported into Apple iBooks Author.
  • Static HTML Markup: This publishing option emits HTML markup, instead of injecting Edge content into the document via JavaScript. This improves search-friendliness (SEO) and accessibility on some platforms.
  • Google Chrome Frame Support: Edge compositions can be viewed on non-HTML5 browsers such as Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 using Google Chrome Frame. Edge also allows you to control the Chrome Frame installation experience when applicable.
  • Symbol Improvements:
  • Copy/Paste and Import/Export: Symbols can now be copied and pasted from one project to another, as well as exported as a separate .edge project that can be imported.
  • Symbol Packaging: Symbols and their properties can be exported into a single file (.eglib) that can be imported into a composition. To enable this feature, select the symbols onstage or in the Library Panel, and export using the right-click contextual menu. You can import the file using the “+” button next to the symbols tab in the Library.
  • Other Enhancements:
  • Compatibility with Adobe Shadow: The Preview in Browser function now works with Adobe Shadow, to preview your compositions in paired devices. For more information on Shadow, please visit www.adobe.com/go/shadow.
  • Auto-Keyframe Mode Update: A newly added third state is activated after creating a new element, letting you know Auto-Keyframe mode is ready. It won’t take effect until you re-enable it, allowing you to configure new elements without getting extraneous keyframes.
  • Editable Time Codes: The editable time code feature is back, in a new location along with an editable duration time code for the Pin.
  • Pin Activation Improvements: Activating the Pin now turns on Auto-Keyframe mode and turns Instant Transition mode off.
  • Instant Transition Mode Update: The appearance of the Instant Transition Mode button has changed, to avoid confusion with adding a keyframe.
  • Contextual Menus: Improvements to contextual menus span the stage and timeline. For example, you can now right-click on an object on the stage to activate the transform tool. On the timeline, you can right-click to add a keyframe, invert a transition, or select the easing.
  • Predictable Defaults: New files are now created with predictable defaults. Prior versions of Edge retained stage size, color and other attributes from previous compositions.
  • Performance Improvements: Performance was emphasized in this release, specifically when scrubbing the timeline and on playback. The Windows version has also been improved.
  • Various bug fixes.

New in Adobe Edge Animate 1.0.0.15570 Preview 5.1 (Mar 17, 2012)

  • Fixes 2 bugs that were reported by users that we felt were important to fix. The first concerns a “blank” error dialog that is displayed when deleting an image from the images folder while still referencing the image from the composition. The second is an issue where existing HTML files that contained unclosed tags would not be displayed correctly.

New in Adobe Edge Animate 1.0.0.15309 Preview 5 (Mar 12, 2012)

  • New Publishing Features:
  • Publish to Web — Optimize your content for deployment by specifying if jQuery should be packaged with the composition, or downloaded from a CDN to improve caching. Edge also transforms the _edge.js file, and minifies both the _edge.js and _edgeActions.js files, resulting in significantly smaller files.
  • Down-level Stage for non-HTML5 Browsers — Use the new down-level stage to design static (non-animated) compositions that are compatible with older non-HTML5 browsers such as Internet Explorer 8 and below.
  • Poster Capture — You can also create a static version of any composition with a poster image that can be placed on the down-level stage. With the main stage selected, move the playhead to where you want the image to be generated, and click the Poster camera button in the Properties Panel.
  • Preloader Improvements — You can now design what gets shown during the preloader, before the framework, JQuery or composition is downloaded. Choose from a clip-art gallery of animated GIFs or import your own. The loading event is also exposed, providing information on the size and giving more control on when it's used.
  • Major Timeline Improvements:
  • Pin (formerly called the Mark) — When you make an edit, this "pins" the current value while the new value is set at the playhead. You can use this as a faster alternative to animating with keyframes.
  • Playback behavior — Playback has been improved to help you focus on a specific part of your composition.
  • Other Timeline Updates:
  • Easing Tool — Easing functions are now available on the timeline control strip, which visualizes how each of them behaves. You can choose an easing equation prior to creating an animation, and edit them for selected transitions.
  • Time Display — The time display has been removed from the timeline control strip, and is now a "heads-up" indicator next to the playhead and pin.
  • Add Keyframes via Context Menu — "Add keyframe" is now available from the contextual menu when you right-click an element or symbol.
  • Buttons on the Timeline Control Strip: Expand/Collapse Lanes, Insert Label, and Timeline Snapping are now buttons. The filter for "only show animated objects" has been moved to the bottom left.
  • Playback Action Editing — You can now double-click on a playback action to edit the type of action as well as applicable parameters.
  • New On-stage Tools:
  • Transform Tool — Use the new transform tool to skew, scale and rotate an object. You can experiment with this by moving the cursor along the edge of a selected object. It is located next to the selection tool. As a result, controlling corner roundness and the transformation point are no longer accessible with the selection tool.
  • Clip and Background Position Tool — Control the clip area of a selected object by using the green outline and grab handles. When clipped, the black outline lets you control the size, while a center roundness control lets you move the image within it.
  • Symbol Improvements:
  • Symbols Added to Timeline — All symbol instances now appear on the timeline, regardless of whether or not they are animated on the parent timeline.
  • Symbol Playback Region — The length of a symbol's timeline is now displayed on the parent timeline, taking autoplay and playback actions into account (Note – these are not considered "transitions" and cannot be operated as such).
  • Symbol Level Events — Creation and deletion events are now exposed like other events, making it easier to interact with and orchestrate symbols with the rest of your composition.
  • Other Enhancements:
  • Stage Editing with Overflow Hidden Improvements — When editing a composition with overflow set to hidden, the contents outside the div area are now shown. This allows selecting and positioning of objects. On playback, they are hidden so you can see how they would look at run time.
  • Swap Images — Swap the source of imported images via the Properties Panel. This makes it easier to design with temporary or placeholder images that can be replaced later.
  • Cursor Property — The cursor property now shows icons for applicable cursors instead of text.
  • Element Contextual Menu Enhancements — More options are available in contextual menus when an element is selected on the stage, timeline, or Elements Panel.
  • Improved Visualization of HTML Elements — In the Elements Panel, imported HTML (static) is shown as dimmer compared to HTML created in Edge (managed) .
  • Various bug fixes.

New in Adobe Edge Animate 1.0.0.93.13517 Preview 4 (Jan 27, 2012)

  • Symbols:
  • Create nested animations with independent timelines and interactive capabilities.
  • Programmatically control symbols via exposed APIs and pre-built code snippets.
  • Edit symbol definitions in the same manner as working with other objects.
  • Specify whether or not a symbol should autoplay or not.
  • Control playback functionality at the playhead location, such as play or stop commands.
  • Scrub or play the timeline to scrub symbols, which will follow symbol commands and autoplay definitions.
  • Easily access symbol definitions and instances in the new Library Panel.
  • Web Fonts:
  • Add richer typography to your compositions by integrating a web font service. Edge supports the following types:
  • Downloadable font packages (ex: FontSquirrel)
  • Linkable font services (ex: Google Web Fonts)
  • Token font services (ex: Typekit, fonts.com)
  • Access newly added fonts from the list of available fonts.
  • Define a font fallback list for users who don't have the font in your composition.
  • Element Display:
  • Control how long an element is displayed, so they only appear when needed. By default, elements are always on even if they're off the stage. They can be configured to be "off" (equivalent to display="none"), removing them from the HTML rendering tree and reducing resources.
  • New Enhancements:
  • Re-parenting Elements — Define the parent-child relationship between objects.
  • New Library Panel — Easily access imported assets (such as images), symbols, and fonts. You can also drag and drop from the Library Panel to a specific location on the stage.
  • Transform tool — Scale objects on the stage instead of resizing them.
  • Transform point — Place objects outside of the bounds of the div. For example, this lets you rotate around a point to create a circular path.
  • Color tools — Select the stroke and fill color for a shape prior to drawing it (located on the toolbar).
  • Multi-Select improvements — Perform operations to a group of objects selected on the stage, rather than the last selected object.
  • Composition ID — Easily edit the composition ID in the stage properties. Composition IDs are helpful for using multiple compositions in one web page.
  • Simplified script include — Use Edge's simplified script in your host HTML page, which is now only a single line of code.
  • Usability improvements:
  • Drag and drop assets from the file system directly onto the stage.
  • Newly refined timeline actors list.
  • Set autoplay on or off on the stage.
  • Use Option-drag or Ctrl-drag to duplicate objects.
  • Additional elements properties: Clip regions and background position for images.
  • Ability to insert time at the playhead.
  • Performance:
  • A common version of WebKit for Mac and Windows provides a more consistent stage experience across platforms and improves performance.
  • In-app playback performance has been improved, especially on Windows.
  • Various bug fixes.
