  • Standard collection now includes new device group “Terminals” and 3 new devices:
  • New devices: ATM, POS, Cash Terminal
  • Please, contact us, if you need additional devices. We are interested in it, and will try to add them in the next software version.
  • New update dialog:
  • If new version is found automatically or manually, application will inform you about that, show new features list and suggest to download and install the update automatically.
  • Ability to group map tabs:
  • This feature will be definitely interesting for users, who open lots of network maps. Select View->Groups in main window menu. Map tabs will be shown in groups. Groups are defined as catalogs where maps are stored. It can be company offices or branches, city districts etc.
  • Report enhancements:
  • Summary statistic report now presents percent fractions. Now you can check downtime duration and package losses more precisely, e.g. up to 0.001%. Data highlight is also enhanced, so you can faster focus on critical stuff.
  • Time intervals for data filtering in reports are expanded – now you can show the data for today, yesterday, previous month etc.
  • External commands:
  • Now you can group external commands with unlimited nesting level. External command tree is now created from the very top level of the context menu. Thus checkbox “show at the root of context menu” is no longer needed – you just need to change command from a group to an upper level.
  • You can quickly enable/disable a command or a group of commands with one checkbox. So you can temporarily hide the commands you don’t need.
  • Predefined commands (Open, Trace route etc.) can be placed in any place of context menu or hidden.
  • New standard external commands are added – now there are over 20 of them. Application makes a check at the first launch and enables only those commands which are available on a machine.
  • Standard external commands:
  • Please, contact us, if you need any additional external commands to be predefined. We are interested in it, and will try to add them in the next software version.
  • Wake On Lan:
  • Wake On Lan utility is developed and added into distributive. It allows to turn PCs on remotely via network, using so called Magic Packet.
  • In order to use Wake On Lan you have to know MAC-address of a machine to be turned on. Algorius Net Viewer collects MAC-addresses of all devices and enters it automatically. Select Management->Wake On Lan in device’s context menu to use Wake On Lan.
  • You can enter IP of an intermediate device like router, thus enabling turning a computer on via Internet.
  • Utility is stored in Utils\wol.exe in application catalog. It is the console application. Its syntax is shown after launching wol.exe.
  • UDP scanning method:
  • Now you can specify various local port and destination port in UDP scanning method settings. E.g. you can send request from port 7 to port 9 and wait for reply on port 7. If port 0 is specified as local port then operating system will assign first free port in upper range. Thus you’ll avoid conflicts with other applications if port is already assigned.
  • Web-enhancements in the interface:
  • Device address is now shown as a link, so you can open it faster via Web-interface.
  • Hyperlinks are now recognized in device descriptions like in the application interface.
  • Content of text blocks can be selected and copied to clipboard – separate Web-interface page is available for them now.
  • Formatted device descriptions are now displayed.

New in Algorius Net Viewer 5.0 (Jul 2, 2013)

  • Plugins:
  • All scanning methods are now implemented in plugins. All plugins are located in Plugins folder in application catalog. Each plugin has scanning method algorithm and settings editor. You can develop you own plugins, API for that already exists, but it is still evolving.
  • Scanning methods:
  • Previously scanning methods were hardcoded by developers. Now you can create one or several scanning methods based on each plugin. You can set individual settings for each method, enabled by corresponding plugin. All scanning methods from previous version are in place, so no migration is required.
  • In order to create new scanning method you have to select plugin, enter the name, identifier and settings. Scanning method’s name is displayed for selection, you can change it freely any time. Scanning method’s identifier is used for internal links and is not recommended to be changed. If identifier is changed, devices may fail to find its scanning method and you’ll have to specify it again. 'Group operations' mechanism has new ability to filter devices by scanning method.
  • New scanning method — External:
  • New 'External' scanning method is added – it enables device scanning using external utilities. It significantly expands the application functionality, since you can include any external application with scanning of network devices into Algorius Net Viewer.
  • Let’s show how to use Ping.exe utility as an example. We create new scanning method in monitoring settings, select External plugin for it, set identifier and name (e.g. PingExe). Set ping.exe as file name and %IP% as attributes.
  • Timeout can be increased up to 15 seconds. It is enough to finish Ping.exe operation. After this period of time application is forcedly closed and device is displayed as inactive.
  • Ping.exe returns zero exit code in case of successful ping. It can be used to set “inactive” state in Algorius Net Viewer.
  • ping.exe is the console application, so you can get numeric value from the console. In English operation system average Ping in the console is shown after word 'Average'.
  • All other settings can be left as is. Click OK and new scanning method is created – now you can assign it to devices. If you hold mouse over a device you will see not only its status, but detailed console output also:
  • New scanning method — WMI:
  • WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) scanning method enables monitoring of different parameters: hard drives status, network interfaces status, launched processes and lots more. WMI Query Language (WQL) is used to access WMI. This language is a sort of SQL language.
  • In order to activate WMI you should specify executable query, address range and ranges of returned values to set active or inactive device state or a warning.
  • New scanning method — Temperature:
  • New scanning method 'Temperature' measures PC temperature via sensors. Data gathering is performed via WMI plugin. You can optionally configure high and critical temperature for warning notification or error.
  • New scanning method — DriveFreeSpace:
  • New scanning method 'DriveFreeSpace' measures free space on specified or all hard disk drives. Data gathering is performed via WMI plugin. You can optionally configure high and critical low space for warning notification or error.
  • New scanning method — MultiPing:
  • New 'MultiPing' scanning method is similar to 'Ping' method in previous versions. Difference is that device is scanned several times and average response time is taken. It increases the scanning accuracy. You can also specify the interval between requests.
  • New scanning method — UDP:
  • New scanning method 'UDP' enables device scanning by sending a package to device’s UDP port and waiting for response at the same port. Response time is measured. It is possible to set text of package being sent. You can enter hex-message:
  • Previous versions could notify only about device start/stop/downtime. Version 5.0 has new device state — warning. You can specify the event for this state in scanning method settings – e.g. when ping exceeds 1000 ms.
  • You can be notified when devices enter this state. E.g. application can notify you when ping of any device is more than 1000 ms during defined time interval. It makes it possible to find potential issues before their real occurrence.
  • You can specify text color for device labels in warning state in formatting settings. Reports include record filtering by this state.
  • Flexible notification settings:
  • In previous versions you had to specify device type to configure the events. Now it is not required – you can set up the notification for all devices at once.
  • You can specify the scanning method for events, so you can configure a notification for all devices with specific scanning method.
  • Pause for specific maps:
  • Now you can pause the monitoring not for all maps, but for specific chosen maps also. Pause state for each map is saved when application is closed. Thus you can have all maps opened and scan only required ones.
  • Arrows on lines end:
  • Lines settings now have an ability to set arrow on one or both line ends. It is convenient to visualize data flow directions.
  • Quick settings change:
  • Now you have an optional ability to specify the configuration file during application launch, e.g.: NetViewer.exe -o:my_options.xml.
  • Now it can be used on repeated application launch. Since application is not started twice, changes are applied to current launched application. Thus you can quickly switch between various settings.
  • You can also use -L: key, e.g. NetViewer.exe -l:my_options.xml. With this key settings will be loaded from specified file, but saving will be done into previous file. It is useful when you need to update settings from master-copy.
  • Application performance optimization:
  • Several critical performance issues are fixed. These issues usually arose on slow PCs and under specific operating systems versions. Algorithm for MAC address gathering was changed: previously application could periodically hang for short intervals of time. Processing of external commands was advanced: its population was pretty long if there were more than 100 commands. Settings application was advanced: device collection is now reloaded only if required.
  • Monitoring log is also optimized. Previously scanning result and error text was saved as text in the database. It could be critical for big maps in terms of data volume. Now database stores only numeric scanning result or numeric error code. During report generation message text is automatically populated using these numeric data, so database size is decreased with no visible changes for a user. It not only keeps the disc space, but also speeds up report generation.

New in Algorius Net Viewer 4.1 (Apr 14, 2013)

  • New devices:
  • 10 new devices are added into standard collection
  • Limitation of map access via Web interface:
  • Now you can limit the list of maps, accessible via Web-interface. You can specify map catalogs or specific maps. Previously you had to run 2 entities of an application to do that, now it became easier. If password authorization is enabled then you can specify different map list for different users. Windows, Kerberos and NTLM authorizations enable assignment of different map lists to different operating system roles.
  • SMS notification via GPRS/2G/3G/4G modem:
  • You can connect GPRS modem, mobile phone or 2G/3G/4G modem to a PC (usually via USB) and use it to send SMS from Algorius Net Viewer in case of equipment shutdown, launch or downtime. Device should enable modem mode – almost all devices are capable of that, though sometimes it can be blocked by a provider (e.g. in iPhone). It is easy to check – connect a device to PC, wait until drivers are installed and check if there is new modem in Windows Device Manager. Go to Modem tab in modem settings and find the assigned COM-port there – this value should be entered in Algorius Net Viewer. You can also find Diagnostics tab in modem settings – we highly recommend to run modem diagnostics before using it with Algorius Net Viewer. In some cases it helps to detect and prevent possible issues. For example, most of 3G/4G modems have software installed to be launched to enable Internet connection. This software blocks COM-port and disables SMS sending. This software should be closed in this case.
  • Chat and SMS notification via Skype:
  • If you have Skype launched, then Algorius Net Viewer can use it for notifications. It can send text notification to specified user or SMS notification to particular number. You should confirm the ability to use it after first launch of Skype. Open Skype and select “Accept”.
  • Settings of device monitoring log:
  • User with a lot of devices will be interested in this functionality. Algorius Net Viewer can scan thousands of devices per minute. This is a significant load on database with monitoring log. Now you can switch monitoring off for specific devices or minimize logging – log only device switch on/off. It significantly decreases the database size, speeds up report generation due to less data to be processed. Please note that this will limit monitoring reports for devices with disabled full logging, since there will be just no data for a report.
  • Displaying devices status on the map:
  • Select a device, choose 'Appearance->Show Status' in its context menu. The status of the device will be displayed on the map. Status includes the scanning method, current response time and event severity indication (if there is any), according to the Notification System settings.
  • Enhanced automatic line connection between devices:
  • From now on, if all incoming lines from one of the sides may be drawn horizontally or vertically, they will be drawn like that. Your maps will be more accurate and tidy. You can tune up the lines by adding the interim nodes.
  • Quick copies:
  • Now you can just click on the object, hold Ctrl and drag it to create a copy – quick and simple. If you also hold Shift, then it will move only vertically or horizontally.
  • Map backup copies on saving:
  • Backup copies setting in Map Server is now applicable for map saving also. You will definitely appreciate this ability, when you succeed to restore some map after losing it. We’ve also implemented the protection against errors during saving of maps and application settings (e.g. if there is no more free disk space or power is off). It prevents file corruption.
  • Improvement of Map information report:
  • Now you can filter devices by type in Map information report, creating a report only for specific devices.
