New in BackupAssist 10.2 (Oct 31, 2017)

  • NEW Manual CryptoSafeGuard scan option:
  • Added a CryptoSafeGuard manual scan feature. This allows you to scan a whole system on demand, and whitelist files before any backup jobs flag them.
  • NEW Faster CryptoSafeGuard scans:
  • The first time CryptoSafeGuard runs within a backup job, it will scan files modified in the last 3 months (subsequent scans will be fully incremental). This change, along with many other performance improvements in 10.2, will reduce the time it takes for a CryptoSafeGuard scan to run.
  • NEW CryptoSafeGuard grace period:
  • To prevent jobs from being prematurely blocked by false positives after CryptoSafeGuard scans, each job will now have a grace period. During this period, any detections will display a warning instead of blocking all backup jobs, but SMS notifications will still be sent. After a job has had 3 consecutive safe scans, the grace period will end and any future detections will cause all jobs to become blocked.
  • NEW Cloud Backup Settings:
  • Added a new Cloud Backup section to the Settings tab. This setting allows you to set the average upload and download speed limit for all cloud backup jobs.

New in BackupAssist 10.1.3 (Oct 12, 2017)

  • CryptoSafeGuard
  • Due to limitations in Windows Server 2008 / 2008R2, this update will prevent CryptoSafeGuard from scanning inside of guests on Server 2008 / 2008R2 hosts, because when CryptoSafeGuard deletes a checkpoint, the .avhd checkpoint files are not removed until the guest is restarted. This could cause the host machine to eventually run out of disk space.
  • Fixed an issue that caused CryptoSafeGuard's potential infection dialog to display an error when it's first opened on Windows Server Core.
  • The CryptoSafeGuard detection SMS message has changed to "Ransomware detected on machine %COMPUTER_NAME%". An additional message (maximum of 30 characters) can be configured, which will be appended to the end of the standard SMS message to help identify the machine.
  • Updated CryptoSafeGuard to ensure that it is fully supported by MSP subscriptions.
  • If CryptoSafeGuard is disabled, all jobs will be automatically unblocked, if they are currently blocked due to a potential ransomware infection.
  • Increase the range of digits that can be used in the SMS number validation.
  • CryptoSafeGuard will now rename the temporary Hyper-V guest (VM) checkpoints so that they are easily identifiable.
  • CryptoSafeGuard will now delete any left-over Hyper-V guest (VM) checkpoints from previous scans.
  • Added ability for users to increase the timeout on creating temporary Hyper-V guest (VM) checkpoints during a CryptoSafeGuard scan.
  • Fixed backup error reporting for rare CryptoSafeGuard failures in some System Protection jobs.
  • If any unexpected errors occur during the CryptoSafeGuard backup protection step, they will now be reported as BA8007: "An unexpected error occurred during the CryptoSafeGuard protection step". Previously, these would be logged as unhandled exceptions in the backup report.
  • User Interface
  • Fixed an issue with the detection of some Window Server Core 2016 installs that caused issues with some UI features.
  • Reports/Notifications
  • BackupAssist will now report VSS applications that were not fully backed up to a cloud destination due to skipped files.

  • Fixed: When network authentication fails, the domain is now retained instead of being reset to the default
  • Enhanced: If the console is started when the service isn't running, the user is asked if they want the service to be started
  • Enhanced: ntbackup log file handling has been improved such that delays in the file showing up and temporary locks on the file (eg. antivirus software) don't prevent BackupAssist from being able to locate and read the log file
  • NEW: All jobs may now be cancelled via the Monitor window during the main engine execution stage. The remaining steps of cancelled jobs are skipped, and the job list shows the job status as Cancelled
  • Enhanced: The Exmerge and SQL engines now display more information during the backups via the Monitor window.
  • Fixed: SQL backup filenames are no longer formatted using the local sql pseudonyms "." and "(local)", so that restores to the server don't have to be performed from the local server, but pre-existing filenames are still valid for SQL Restore
  • Enhanced: If the Exmerge engine fails for a given period, it will no longer try to backup further periods
  • NEW: The Exmerge engine offers a number of configurable options, including whether to delete original messages off the server during the export, whether to exclude specific directories from the export, whether or not to attempt to set mailbox rights before the backup, and how to handle setting the optional Domain parameter passed to Exmerge.
  • Fixed: The scheduling conflict causing ntbackup jobs to fail if another job finishes during execution has been resolved by forcing ntbackup jobs to only run .one-at-a-time for the entirety of the job, and by executing jobs for other engine types without using DesktopRights.exe
  • Fixed: The conventional file copy how uses an entirely new subdirectory of the user-specified working directory in order to avoid accidentally removing user files and/or backing up incidental user files.
