New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.4.1 (May 31, 2016)

  • (Optional) Manual Save:
  • One of the most daring features of Mockups 3 was that everything was always and immediately automatically saved to disk. We thought everyone would love the peace of mind of not having to compulsively hit CTRL+S all the time, living in fear of losing their changes.
  • It turns out, while most of you really do love it, you have clearly told us that there are some cases in which automatically saving to the original file all the time is not the right thing to do.
  • For instance, sometimes you want to just muck around some wireframes knowing that you'll be able to discard your changes easily at the end of your experimental session. Another case is when working on files stored on slow remote network drives, or busy shared folders. Saving all the time in these cases might slow you down, or generate too much network traffic. Last but not least, some of you just simply prefer to save manually: 30 years of computing and muscle-memory are hard to let go of! :)
  • To help with these issues, today we are introducing the option to turn off autosave in Mockups for Desktop.
  • autosaveoption:
  • When automatic saving is off, you will use CTRL+S to save, and also be able to use "Reload from Disk" to quickly throw away your current set of changes.
  • The setting will be remembered across restarts and across projects, so you'll only really have to set it once.
  • You can now specify icons in the List control!
  • This is very useful when designing Android menus, as well many more kinds of menus and lists.
  • FontAwesome Updated to 4.6.3:
  • Our friends at FontAwesome released an update, so we incorporated it!
  • BTW, we added these new icons to myBalsamiq as well.
  • Auto-Recover in Case of Data Corruption:
  • Just like any other file on your computer, in some rare cases our BMPR files might get corrupted.
  • To help mitigate the annoyance this might cause, we added automatic local backups back in version 3.1. The backups work well and usually make it so that no work is lost, but finding the backup was a bit cumbersome.
  • With today's release, we make the software do the work. When data corruption is detected, Mockups will now find the latest backed up file and recover it for you. E
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue with importing symbols in BMML projects in some cases. Thanks Arno D. for reporting it!
  • Fixed a little issue with the Open Recent menu which showed the project name instead of the file path after renaming a project. Thanks Jerome for reporting it!

  • We now show [New Project] instead of the more cryptic [-] in the window title when a project has never been explicitly saved yet

  • You can now select alternates easily both from the navigator menu and the fullscreen navigator menu.
  • alternates:
  • Thanks to all the people who asked for this on this thread, this one, this one, and via email.
  • NEW, MORE ANDROID-Y OPTIONS FOR CONTROLS:
  • So we heard this Android thing is getting popular and it looks like it might be here to stay ;) so we thought we'd make it easier to wireframe Android applications without having to use an external symbol library.
  • This release includes a first batch of changes, more will come in the future.
  • New Search Options
  • search:
  • We added a shape option to make the Search control have Rounded Corners or be Rectangular, made the search icon optional, and added an option to show or hide a microphone icon.
  • NEW TEXT INPUT BORDER OPTIONS:
  • textinput:
  • We added an option to have the border of a Text Input control be only the bottom line, instead of a rectangle. Android-y! :)

  • Fixed a regression, where the ENTER key no longer entered a group or symbol instance.
  • Fixed a cosmetic issue with drawing a block of text while editing a group.
  • We changed the algorithm that decides to scroll content to the right when showing the right panel. It should happen less frequently now. Thanks Robson for reporting it!

  • You can now copy/paste mockup and project notes without having to edit them. Thanks Stromatolyte and Liubi for requesting this!
  • We made it easier to rearrange mockups by dragging thumbnails. Thanks Aras_Kannu for requesting this!
  • Fixed an annoying "jump" when switching between mockups while in fullscreen. Thanks Marc P. for reporting this!

  • We just did a tiny 3.3.12 release to fix this bug:
  • After the update to 3.3.11, all of the mock ups that use the Accordion UI item are displaying incorrectly. Prior to the update, the dash to signify a sub-item did not display.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.11 (Mar 9, 2016)

  • Automatic Repositioning of Aligned Labels:
  • This little and nearly invisible feature will save you loads of time, especially if you create forms.
  • When labels are auto-sized, we now respect their text alignment property and move them accordingly after you change the text.
  • It's much easier to show than to describe, take a look:
  • Duplicate an Alternate As a New Mockup:
  • Ever wanted to turn an alternate into its own mockup? You used to have to select all, copy, create a new mockup and paste.
  • As of today, you can just select the new "Duplicate As New Mockup" feature and pronto, you're done! :)
  • Are you on Windows and use a trackpad or a mouse with a mouse wheel? Or are you on Mac and use a Mighty Mouse? Then you might have gotten frustrated at our lack of support for horizontal scrolling.
  • Because of the platform we're using right now, we have limited support for horizontal scrolling, but we found a compromise! Just hold SHIFT and scroll up and down, and we'll interpret it as horizontal scrolling. Yay!
  • A Brand New Web Demo Project:
  • We spent some time to update the default project you see when you visit our Web Demo Version.
  • We now show a bunch of our newest features, and teach you how to use them. We even include some sample interactive prototypes in it to use as a starting point.

  • Fixed an issue with the Page Up and Page Down keys turning off Markup in some situations on Windows in Full Screen Presentation Mode. Thanks grebe for reporting it!
  • CTRL+D now duplicates the current mockup when the focus is in the navigator. Thanks Michael H. for requesting it!
  • The little helper icon next to the Links inspector pointed to a 404 page. That's now fixed.
  • Fixed a strange little issue with the DataGrid showing the wrong label color in some cases. Thanks russ for the bug report!
  • Added support for the {mockup-name} macro in the Browser control. A good idea by cschriemer!

  • Fixed an issue with the Formatting Toolbar control not exporting properly in some cases.
  • Fixed a little regression in the help menu in the web versions (it was showing Register... as if it was on Desktop).
  • We now default to showing all branches of the mockups navigator as being open instead of closed. It gives you a better sense of the contents and size of the project when you first open it.
  • Fixed an issue with export to ZIP failing in some rare cases. Thanks for Ben G. reporting it!
  • We now fully disable Quick Draw when overriding symbol instances.
  • We restored the old v2 behavior of the Links Inspector when multiple controls are selected. Thanks Colin M., Chris G., and Colin McQ. for reporting it!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.9 (Feb 9, 2016)

  • New "Read-Only" Mode:
  • There are times where it's better to just let a user view a project without letting them make edits.
  • For instance:
  • In a web-based version of Mockups, when the Internet connection goes down and the editor works on reconnecting.
  • When opening a BMPR file with an expired trial license in Mockups 3 for Desktop.
  • Before today's release, we let users make changes in these occasions, but those changes were not being saved. As you can imagine, this led to some confusion and lost work.
  • Starting today, when one of the occasions above happens, the app will go in "read-only mode", meaning that you'll be able to see everything and even copy text from each control, but you won't be able to make changes to the project.
  • expired:
  • This will also be useful in the future when we add richer collaboration capabilities to the app: you'll be able to invite collaborators but only give them viewing rights instead of editing rights. Fancy!
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • We changed the keyboard shortcut for switching from Label to Text and from Text Input to Text Area from CTRL+ENTER to ALT+ENTER.Thanks kemch and hshubin for the smart request.
  • We added a link to the Data Grid Formatting Documentation directly in the default text of the Data Grid. Handy!
  • datagrid:
  • We made it easier to select objects near the top-left of the canvas.
  • We capture CTRL+T to transform in web-based versions as well.
  • You can now transform a Text Input into a ComboBox control. Thanks EdRyan for the request!
  • You can now transform a Tag Cloud into a Text control. Tomas_Kapler for the request!
  • Fixed how the ComboBox resizes when it has multiple lines of text, it's closed and autosized.
  • Fixed a regression: the alignment button had disappeared from the App Bar!
  • We improved the margins of the Arrow control. No more clipping! Thanks sgiroux as always!
  • Fixed a regression around exporting and cropping. Thanks so much Andi for reporting it!
  • We improved how we decide to show the "would you like to replace this asset" dialog when copying from one BMPR and pasting to another. Thanks David Y. for the report!
  • Fixed an issue with importing from JSON not working if the user was in the Assets view.
  • Fixed an issue with Zoom All to Fit not working in some cases. Thanks russ for the report!
  • Fixed an issue when dragging and dropping resulting in the wrong mockup being selected. Thanks aledis, Jerome R. and Aras_Kannu for the report!
  • Fixed an issue with undoing and redoing resizing of groups not working predictably in some cases.
  • We now prevent transforming a control type when overriding a symbol, to avoid bugs like the one diederick found.
  • We added the iPad control to the "Big" tag in the UI Library.
  • We fixed an issue in which the wrong symbol would get selected in the symbol library in some cases. Thanks Jerome R. for the report!
  • We fixed an issue with spurious "this file is locked" errors showing up when working on files saved in network drives. Huge thanks to Steve C. for all the help debugging this annoying behavior.
  • Fixed a run-time-exception when reconnecting (in our browser-based versions).
  • We updated our app's code-signing certificate.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.6 (Jan 15, 2016)

  • NEW:
  • Annual billing! Annual billing! Annual billing! We've added a discounted price to pay for 1 year of myBalsamiq upfront, rather than a month at a time. This will save your accounting team from having to track down the invoice every month for your credit card statement.
  • An actual invoice: Previously our "invoices" were more like receipts, which are not accepted easily in some countries. They now have more product information, an invoice number, and other common details required by accounting standards in some parts of the world.
  • Easily editable invoice fields: You no longer need to re-enter your credit card to make simple changes to your address on your invoices!
  • More invoice fields: We know many countries require invoices have your Company Name and Tax ID, and now we no longer have to suggest awkward work arounds for adding this information. You'll have dedicated, easily editable fields to update this information.
  • Downloading your invoice to PDF: Just a simple click on a button and it's done!
  • Better billing notifications: We were restricted previously on the type of notifications we could send, and how we could personalize it for your subscription. We hope the new automated emails better communicate your billing details, as well as changes to your subscription or problems with your renewal payment.
  • FIXED:
  • Fixed an issue with importing ZIP files with a single folder of BMMLs in them.
  • Fixed an annoying "window jumps around as you drag it" bug in OS X El Capitan!
  • Fixed this issue with the Icon and Label control.
  • Fixed an issue with assets getting duplicated when dragging them from one project to another in some cases.
  • We improved how we draw arrow points so that they scale better when zoomed in.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.4 (Jan 7, 2016)

  • New "Resize To" Feature:
  • You can now select multiple controls and resize them to match the widest, narrowest, tallest or shortest in the selection. This is SUPER-handy when creating sets of Buttons, for instance.
  • resizeto:
  • Thanks for those who requested this over the years; last but not least, ArticMe.
  • Much Improved Combo Box Control!
  • You can now change the text color, you can set a pulldown item as selected, you can set it to focussed mode (both when in Open and Closed state), it's now the same height as the Text Input control in the wireframe skin, you can use the [x] and (o) notations for checkboxes and radio buttons, the - or = notation for separators, you can add a scrollbar to it...it really is very powerful now.
  • newcombobox:
  • Thanks to all those who requested these improvement over the years, here or here or here or here or here or via email.
  • Arrow Improvements:
  • The new Arrows have been universally very well received.
  • As with all major updates to a feature, some minor issues came up, which we're fixing today.
  • We fixed an issue with arrow resizing and padding in groups, improved how arrows resize when near the canvas edges, made arrows markup again (we had inadvertently changed this in 3.3), made it possible to revert overriding arrow positions and fixed an issue when exporting them to BMML.
  • We also made it possible to hold down SHIFT while dragging an arrow end-point to snap at 45 degree intervals. This also makes it very easy to draw straight horizontal and vertical lines, a request by sgiroux and harjeetgulati.
  • arrowsnap:
  • Easier Project Maps!
  • Other Fixes and Improvements:
  • Made \r line breaks work in the Alert control.
  • Made some performance improvements in drawing our controls.
  • Changed the order of menu items in the right-click menu: now Select is above Lock).
  • Fixed the color of the scrollbar in wireframe skin (it was too dark).
  • We now make sure we save all updated thumbnails in the BMPR on project close or exit.
  • Fixed an issue with exporting when markup was hidden.
  • Fixed an issue with CTRL+TAB also indenting mockups on Windows. Thanks sgiroux for reporting it!
  • Improved the quality of cropped images. Thanks grebe for bringing it up!
  • Fixed an issue with mockup scroll position not getting restored properly when going from Symbols to Mockups in some cases.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.2 (Dec 4, 2015)

  • We just did a little update on Friday Dec 4 to fix a little regression with symbols

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.3.1 (Dec 2, 2015)

  • A New Way to Organize Your Mockups:
  • This has been one of our most requested features for years, and we've finally done it! You can now organize your mockups in groups, creating a simple parent/child relationship between them, just by using TAB and SHIFT+TAB. If you've used Powerpoint or Keynote before, this will feel very familiar to you.
  • This feature is useful for projects of all sizes, but it especially shines with larger projects.
  • As you can see at the end of the video, we also increased the size of the thumbnails in the Grid view, to make them more recognizable at a glance.
  • Thank you so much afeinman and all the others who contributed to the feature request, as well as JeromeR, Trevor A. and Andrei B. via email.
  • Better Sizing of Thumbnails:
  • We now resize the thumbnails in the navigator proportionally, instead of just horizontally like before. Take a look:
  • This works for Assets thumbnails as well, so if you want to see your images nice and big, now you can!
  • Big Boy Arrows:
  • The term "big boy arrows" comes from our friend and long-time-power-user Adam Wride, who used it in the Balsamiq Interviews eBook to describe what he wished our Arrow control would behave like.
  • Well, our arrows have finally grown up! You no longer have to fiddle with weird property inspectors about direction and curvature, you can simply drag the ends where you want them to be, and drag the middle control point to specify the curvature.
  • Take a look, it's so simple now:
  • As you can see, the property inspector has been simplified, and we even added a couple of highly requested features:
  • As you can see in the video below, you can select either a curved arrow or one made of straight lines, and you can double-click on the middle control point to make the arrows straight or at a right-angle. Handy!
  • You can also adjust the position of the arrow's label, another highly requested feature.
  • We also, FINALLY, fixed the clipping bug for arrows when exporting them to PNG or PDF!
  • Thanks so much to all the people who requested these improvements over the years! You're too many to list, but you know who you are!
  • "Back" Meta-Link:
  • This is another little feature that's been requested for years. In short, you now have the ability to create a link that goes to the previous page visited while in Full Screen.
  • This is especially useful for modal dialogs that have to be invoked from different screens, as shown in the little video below:
  • Due to technical limitations of the PDF format, this feature will sadly not work in exported interactive PDFs.
  • Thanks for all those who requested this over the years!
  • New "Link to a New Duplicate of This Mockup" Functionality:
  • We added the "Link to a New Mockup" feature a while ago. Today, following a good idea by ariley, we're also adding a variation that duplicates the current mockup instead of creating a new blank one. Handy!
  • We Now Remember Zoom and Scroll Settings across Restarts:
  • Another little but highly requested feature. We now do a better job at re-creating the exact situation you were in when you last closed a project, by saving zoom level and canvas scroll position on a cookie on your computer.
  • Thanks mikecimelli, melogranato and megdesilva, Matt, Alex R., Andrew K., Visnja Zeljeznjak, Steven S., Mark G., Bob J. and others for requesting this!
  • 20 New Icons from FontAwesome 4.5:
  • We incorporated the newly released version 4.5 of FontAwesome, which comes with 20 new icons and a bunch of little fixes here and there (see details).
  • With this update, we were also able to improve how some 2.2 icons in BMMLs are converted when imported into v.3.
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • Resizing a selection from the top-left corner made the right side of the selection flicker. That's now fixed.
  • Similarly, drawing controls with R, T or Y from bottom-right to top-left made the right side of the new control flicker. This is now also fixed.
  • We improved how the button control works when small. Thanks wichase for your assistance!
  • We fixed an issue in the Data Grid where the text in the first row might be white instead of black when the header row was off, nothing was selected and the project selection color was dark.
  • Fixed an issue in the Data Grid showing a selected row at the bottom even after the text for that row was deleted.
  • The Property Inspector for Data Grid controls now says "Data Grid" instead of "List".
  • We fixed an issue with the List control not displaying properly when the font size was very big, some of the text "spilled over" the bottom of it.
  • We fixed an issue with icons getting underlined when a control's text was set to underlined. Thanks heringsfilet for reporting this!
  • Dragging mockups between projects now also brings any alternates along.
  • We changed how the Color Inspector looks to make it much clearer. Take a look:

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.2.4 (Oct 22, 2015)

  • Here's what we've fixed in this release:
  • Fixed an old bug with cropping a rotated image. It works now!
  • Fixed an issue with migrating old Mockups for Google Drive data to the new BMPR format.
  • Made "Zoom All to Fit" work reliably in more cases. Thanks Russ for reporting this!
  • Fixed an operation that might have resulted in a noticeable slowdown on app launch.
  • Added retry logic when copying BMPR files from our internal temporary location back to their original location, which should help when working with network drives.
  • Rewrote the "Save Project As..." logic to be much safer and faster.
  • Fixed an issue with real time collaboration in Safari 9.0.
  • When using CTRL+Enter to transform a Label to a Text or a Text Input to a Text Area while editing them, we now resize the control to be a bit bigger, saving you a manual step. Thanks Sebastian for the good idea!
  • We added some logs to help us debug edge-case saving issues that a few people are still seeing.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.2.3 (Oct 13, 2015)

  • Resizeable Alternates Panel:
  • We're very happy to see the Alternates feature being used so much. Many of you asked for a taller Alternates panel in the Info Panel, so we made it resizeable in this release! Just drag it up, and Mockups will remember the size for that project
  • Bug Fixes and Other Improvements:
  • Darkened the text and icon color in wireframe skin from #555555 to #333333, as #555555 was too light. Thanks to ctoryu and others for bringing it up!
  • Fixed an issue with the automatic text color in the Comment control in wireframe skin. Thanks Chris_Gatland for bringing it up!
  • Made it so that hitting CTRL+ENTER while editing a Text Input control converts it into a Text Area control.
  • Fixed a regression that stripped white spaces from the beginning of mockup names in the rename dialog. Thanks sgiroux for noticing!
  • Updated the documentation links to go to our brand new documentation website.
  • Fixed an issue with the list of possible control types to swap to not having a scrollbar in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue with the View menu not properly showing what the user is working on (Mockups, Assets, etc.).
  • Fixed an issue with selecting an iPhone Keyboard control generating an error in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue when hitting CTRL+ENTER while editing a label with some other control selected resulting in an error.
  • Fixed an old issue with cropping rotated images.
  • Fixed an issue with the Link and Selection color pickers not updating in a real-time-collaboration environment.
  • Fixed an issue with closing a project while it's opening resulting in an error.
  • Fixed an issue with export to PNG failing on El Capitan in some cases.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.2.0 (Oct 2, 2015)

  • Hello friends of Balsamiq!
  • Today we have something so exciting to share that we're switching the version number from 3.1 to 3.2 for it. Check it out!
  • Two new control types: Block and Line of Text
  • Our sweet spot is the ideation phase, so it only makes sense that we offer you ways to create rough, quick-and-dirty wireframes.
  • With today's release we introduce two new control types, which help you do just that: the Block of Text and Line of Text controls.
  • Here's what they look like, in Sketch and Wireframe skin:
  • The idea is that you'll use them when first coming up with ideas, and swap them with more precise control types at a later stage in the design process (see below for an awesome new way to do just that).
  • A whole new way to "draw" your wireframes!
  • This is something we're really excited about. Starting in 3.2, you can hold down R, T or Y on your keyboard and simply "draw" Rectangles, Blocks of Text or Lines of Text controls.
  • Just check out this little video (no audio), notice how INCREDIBLY FAST this is:
  • Notice how automatic snapping makes it so that your UIs will look clean even if you create them at hyper-speed: try to do that with pencil and paper! :)
  • This feature alone is a huge boost to your productivity, but it really shines when coupled with our next super-exciting new feature:
  • Swap control type!
  • That's right! Want to switch a Label control to a Text paragraph? Easy! Want to switch a rectangle to a DataGrid? It takes two clicks.
  • Just watch this video, in which I create an old version of iTunes in 60 seconds!:
  • You can also switch a symbol with another symbol, or switch multiple controls at the same time. Just hit CTRL+T and the swap pop-up will show up, or click on the little "v" icon next to the Control Type name in the Property Inspector.
  • You can also hit ENTER or F2 or double-click on a Block of Text or Line of Text control and have it automatically transform to a Text or Subtitle control.
  • When editing a Label, you realize you need more than one line? Hit CTRL+ENTER and it will be transformed to a Text control, and you can just keep on typing.
  • Here's a quick video showing both of these time-saving tricks:
  • This would have taken so long before 3.2...how did we survive so long without these features! :)
  • This feature will take care of this request from Chris_Gatland and this one from jneander.
  • Working around potential data corruption issues!
  • As you may know, our new project-based, sharing-friendly file format (called BMPR) is based on SQLite, a common database format used by many other professional applications.
  • SQLite is great, but it has one major drawback: it doesn't really work well when files are stored on network drives. In some cases, it might even result in data corruption and loss.
  • We have implemented several techniques to work around this issue, but it still wasn't enough, and we lost some customers' data, which is possibly the worst thing we can do to our customers. :(
  • With today's release, we're taking a pretty radical step to squash these issues once and for all: moving forward, whenever you open a BMPR file, we automatically make a copy of it in a local folder, and have Mockups work off of the local copy (which, by the way, is very fast). Then whenever you stop making changes for 5 seconds, we copy the file to the original location, automatically.
  • This is similar to how Keynote works on the Mac. Incidentally, if you store your files on Dropbox or similar tools, this results in far less updates, which is nice on your bandwidth.
  • We also keep the local copies around for 7 days, as an additional backup for your files. Better to err on the side of safety!
  • Better Symbol Library Management
  • You can now select multiple symbols at the same time and perform operations on them, like dragging them or deleting them. This makes keeping your symbol libraries nice and clean much much easier.
  • Zoom All to Fit and Zoom All to Actual Size
  • That's right, you can now finally zoom all of your mockups at once, either to Actual Size (1:1), or "to fit".
  • zoomall:
  • We added two handy keyboard shortcut for these commands: CTRL+SHIFT+1 and CTRL+SHIFT+0.
  • Thanks so much Liz A. and Aras_Kannu, Catherine_Azzarello and meldeliz for the feature requests!
  • Improved Colors in Wireframe Skin:
  • Up until today, the wireframe skin used #000000 for the text color and #666666 for icon color. This doesn't really make much sense since you wouldn't use different pencils for your text and your icons while sketching on paper, right?
  • Starting today, we now use #555555 for both text and icons. It blends in with the border colors of the controls, and we think it looks much much better. Take a look:
  • newwireframecolors:
  • Project-Wide Link Color!
  • You can now specify default link color for your whole project, just like you could already do with the Selection Color. You can find the new settings in the Project
  • Other changes and bug fixes
  • Reviewed the text color in all control types in both skins: now it will consistently become white when the background is dark, and it will become gray when the control is disabled. Thanks Saleem S. for the bug report.
  • Fixed an issue with ComboBox resizing.
  • Fixed an issue with the background of the iPhone Menu control.
  • Fixed an issue with the external border of the iPad control.
  • Improved how the Button control behaves when small. Thanks Guenter T. and wichase for the bug reports!
  • Fixed an issue with the Calendar control when exporting it to PNG / PDF.
  • The List and DataGrid controls now have a full Color Picker at their disposal. Thanks sgiroux for the request!
  • Fixed an issue with links when importing BMMLs generated via Mockups for Confluence.
  • Added "Circle" and "Ellipse" as alternate names for the Shape control. Thanks Jane Portman for the in-person request at Microconf!
  • Fixed an issue with the mouse pointer getting stuck with the wrong pointer sometimes. This is an oooold bug!
  • Fixed an issue with renaming an alternate putting the app in a broken state. Thanks Dorel D. for the bug report!
  • Our color pickers now show the current color in the tooltip. Handy! Thanks Loren M and win7guru for the bug reports!
  • Fixed an issue with unregistering Mockups for Desktop while the trial is still active. Thanks Michelle B. for the bug report!
  • Fixed an issue with the file extension not being there when saving images and assets to disk.
  • Improved the Rename Mockup dialog so that it doesn't accept multi-line names any more.
  • Finally added type-ahead capability to the link inspector! (in 3.2.2). Thanks Niklas B. and others for the request!
  • Fixed an issue with Save Project As... and Exporting to PDF, PNG or ZIP failing in some cases in El Capitan (in 3.2.2). Thanks djethan for the bug report!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.1.9 (Aug 21, 2015)

  • FontAwesome everywhere:
  • As you know, we switched to using the FontAwesome icon set with the Balsamiq Mockups 3 for Desktop release back in March.
  • With today's release, we bring that same huge icon set (585 icons!) to all of our other products: myBalsamiq, Mockups for Confluence, Mockups for JIRA and even the old Mockups for Desktop 2.2!
  • This change will greatly improve the experience of using more than one of our products together. No more "image not found" errors when trying to upload a v.3 bmml to myBalsamiq! :)
  • Drag+Drop of Single Symbols in Balsamiq Mockups:
  • You can now keep your symbol libraries nicely organized by dragging and dropping single symbols from one library to another.
  • You can even drag a single symbol from a project to another, without having to drag the whole library with it!
  • Thanks so much Liubi and WeeDz for requesting this!
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue in the DataGrid control when the last line of text was empty. Thanks Dorel D. for uncovering this bug!
  • Added a confirmation dialog when discarding alternates since it's not something you can undo (yet).
  • We now make a backup alternate of the official version when you promote an alternate to official, since promoting is not something you can undo (yet).
  • Improved the padding of the Button control in some configurations
  • Fixed a regression with the Tooltip inspector, sorry about that! Thanks Marcel W. and nzahavi for bringing this up!
  • Fixed an issue with images losing resolution when dragged from one project to another
  • On Windows, we now open a new empty project when you close the last project from the menu, instead of quitting the application. Thanks sgiroux for the suggestion!
  • Fixed an issue with "Learn More" links in Asset, Symbols and Trash empty states not working in our browser-based versions.
  • Fixed an issue with the official version getting deselected in the Export PDF dialog by accident. Thanks Scott_Harrington for the bug report!
  • In exported PDFs, we now properly point links to the official version's page, even if it has alternates. Thanks Scott_Harrington for bringing this up!
  • Fixed an issue with the Calendar control having days "spilling over" its edge.
  • Fixed a couple of issues with the Grid view.
  • Fixed an issue with rendering thumbnails of alternate mockups.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.1.8 (Jul 30, 2015)

  • Multiple Selection:
  • This was a long time coming, and we're pretty happy about how it came out!
  • You can now select more than one mockup, asset or trashed resource, and perform operations on the selected items all at once.
  • This is especially useful when you want to reorder multiple mockups, or delete unused assets in a project. We also have plans for making this feature more and more useful in the future, you'll see... :)
  • To select multiple items just use SHIFT+CLICK or CTRL+CLICK, just like in most other software that supports multiple selection.
  • As part of this feature, we also gave the Mockups and Assets navigator the ability to maintain keyboard focus. This means that after clicking on a mockup you'll be able to use the arrow keys to navigate through your project, or do things like hitting ENTER or F2 to rename the current mockup or asset (a heringsfilet idea). It's a small thing, but it will save you lots of time in the long run.
  • SIXTY-SIX New Icons with FontAwesome 4.4:
  • Our partnership with Dave from FontAwesome is working out really well.
  • We worked with him to add some icons that were part of our old Mockups 2 set but were missing from FontAwesome 4.3, and now they're part of FontAwesome 4.4, along with a ton of other new useful icons.
  • Horizontal Site Maps:
  • The Site Map control is a popular one, but we've heard many times that it takes up a lot of space.
  • With today's release, you'll be able to use a new "Direction" toggle in the Site Map inspector to switch to a Horizontal view, which is just as clear, but more compact.
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • Added a little visual indicator for mockups that have alternates
  • Added the CTRL+SHIFT+PAGEUP and CTRL+SHIFT+PAGEDOWN to navigate between a mockup's alternates. Handy! Thanks Michael E. and JeromeR for requesting this!
  • Fixed the name of the official version of a mockup to "Official Version", not "Official Versions".
  • Fixed a few pretty big memory leaks, the memory consumption shouldn't keep growing during normal operation any more.
  • We now sort items in the Trash alphabetically.
  • Fixed an issue with alternates showing up in a different order than their official version.
  • Fixed an issue with importing a bmml exported from Mockups for Confluence or JIRA.
  • Improved how the new Calendar control behaves at very small sizes.
  • Changed the Formatting Toolbar control to use the new FontAwesome icons instead of our old ones.
  • Fixed an issue with "Save as..." not saving thumbnails of alternate mockups properly.
  • Fixed an issue with Mockups not warning before overwriting a file in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue with Mockups not adding a .zip extension when exporting to BMMLs project in some cases.
  • Launching Mockups by double-clicking on a BMPR file no longer opens other projects that were open when you last closed the app (except for projects that have never been saved, otherwise you'd lose those).
  • Fixed an issue with the position of cropped control changing on file re-open in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue with maintaining proper cropping coordinates when importing from BMML.
  • We fixed a little annoying visual bug with the progress bar moving up and down during long operations.
  • "Used By" in Assets now shows the mockup name along with the Alternate name when necessary.
  • Support importing from ZIPs that have a single directory in them with all the bmmls and assets in it.
  • Fixed an issue with the Assets list not updating after a rename.
  • Fixed an issue with the text color of the selected UI Library control being black instead of white.
  • Fixed an issue with exporting mockups with # in their name to BMML.
  • We fixed a bug with deleting mockups in rapid succession in big projects making the app unresponsive.
  • Fixed an issue with not being able to type the ć character on Polish keyboards. Thanks pataps for reporting it.
  • Fixed the conversion of the File icon from v2 to v3.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.1.5 (Jul 8, 2015)

  • Non-Image Assets:
  • Did you ever wish you could keep all of your collateral files together with your wireframes? Logos in Photoshop or Illustrator format, requirement documents in .docx format, zip files, PDF files, etc. etc.?
  • Well, now you can embed them into your BMPR! Just add them as assets, or even drag them on to the Mockups 3 for Desktop project window.
  • That's it! Now they'll be in the BMPR file, so your collaborators can just click on them and save them to disk, or update them to a new version with the recently added "Import new Version" feature
  • Other improvements and bug fixes:
  • Improved performance of loading projects.
  • Changed "Download" to "Save to Disk" for assets.
  • Added a handy "Download Project BMPR" menu item in Web Demo, so that you can easily bring your experiments to Mockups for Desktop.
  • We changed the auto-reset time from 24h to 1h in the Web Demo version.
  • On Save As, we now update the project title if it matches the old file name. This should help with this RaeHanley report.
  • If you hit CTRL+C with nothing selected, we no longer clear the clipboard.
  • We now close the notes field and the position and size text fields when switching mockups.
  • Fixed an issue with cropping rotated images.
  • Fixed an issue in the crop bar dimensions when cropping resized images.
  • Fixed an issue with converting a group that contains multiple groups to symbol.
  • Fixed an issue with overriding position and size with groups in symbols.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.1.2 (May 19, 2015)

  • New Export to PDF / Print dialog!:
  • Mostly for technical reasons, printing has been one of the roughest parts of Mockups for a long time. With today's release, we decided to get rid of it, and improve it at the same time! I know, it sounds non-sensical, but hear me out.
  • Before today's release, you could only print the current mockup you were seeing, and without any options. In today's release, we decided to remove that limited functionality and replace the Print command with the much more powerful "Export to PDF" command, which we also improved. This way, if you want to print something, you just export it to PDF and then print the PDF using your Operating System's built-in PDF viewer (or whatever PDF viewer you prefer to use). It's one more step, but it's worth it: think of the step of opening the PDF in the PDF viewer as the "Print Preview" step. No more having to print twice because it wasn't exactly what you wanted!
  • You can now select which mockups you want to export. Your selection will be remembered on your computer.
  • You can now include mockup names and page numbers.
  • You can now include mockup notes.
  • You can now access the Export to PDF function with CTRL+P (or CMD+P). Handy!
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • You can now resize the left navigator panel (for Mockups, Assets and Symbol libraries). This will help if you have long mockup names or want to see bigger or smaller thumbnails. Your preference will be remembered for each project, on your computer.
  • Changed how we name mockup clones (no more "Copy of Copy of Copy of...")
  • We now sort Symbol Libraries and Symbols alphabetically.
  • Added font size support to Field Set, Callout, Menu Bar and Site Map controls.
  • Fixed an issue with resizing the combo box really small.
  • Fixed an issue in export when mockup names included "illegal" characters.
  • Fixed an issue with the Menu Bar control not exporting properly to PDF when autosized.
  • Fixed an issue with the Accordion control hiding things too early when resized small.
  • Fixed an issue with "Save Project As" not saving what was in the project's Trash.
  • Fixed an issue with locked controls not disappearing when an Alternate was promoted.
  • We got BMPR registered with IANA! The application/vnd.balsamiq.bmpr mime type for BMPR is now official!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.1.1 (Apr 29, 2015)

  • Improvements to Full Screen Presentation Mode:
  • Changed how we show link hints in full-screen. We no longer leave the pink rectangles on all the time, but instead "flash them" as needed and fade them out so that they don't disturb your mockups. If you want to see where they are, you can click on any empty areas of the mockup to make them flash again.
  • Added a subtle animation when hiding the full-screen toolbar.
  • We now remember the following settings across project and across restarts: active right-side panel, toolbar minimized or not, show link hints, show cursor, show markup, zoom mode.
  • Fixed an issue with settings showing the wrong value in some cases.
  • Bug Fixes Related to Controls:
  • Fixed an issue with the "123" label in the iOS keyboard not being centered.
  • Added support for the {mockup-name} macro in Title and Subtitle controls.
  • Improved how the iPad, iPhone and Accordion controls behave when resized to be very small.
  • Made the top padding of the Label and Text control types match, and improved the padding of other text controls.
  • Changed the default size of the Geometric Shape text to be 13pt, like most of our controls.
  • If you use \r in an image label, the text stays centered now.
  • Same as above but for the Image Map control. :)
  • Fixed how the text alignment works in the Sticky Note control.
  • We changed the color of the Red X control in Sketch skin to be a brighter red.
  • Other Improvements and Bug Fixes:
  • Some users were seeing saving errors, especially when working with OneDrive files. Those should all be fixed now.
  • We now work well with read-only files! We no longer try to update mockup thumbnails unless you change something in the mockup, so just opening a BMPR and looking around won't change the file on disk.
  • We now support our markdown syntax (except for strikethrough) in mockup notes and project description. *Try it out!* :)
  • Fixed an issue with the positioning of the resource menu in the navigator panel.
  • Fixed an issue with reordering not working on the first attempt.

  • Fixed an issue (introduced in 3.0.7, sorry) when exporting projects containing symbols to PNG or PDF.
  • Mitigated a memory leak that people were seeing when switching mockups and using the app for a long time. It should be much better now.
  • Made several performance improvements, the UI should feel more responsive now.
  • Fixed an issue with restoring mockups that used symbols from Trash.
  • Fixed an issue with the "No Margins" option in the PDF export dialog "selecting itself".

  • Fixed an issue with the project navigator flickering a bunch.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.0.6 (Apr 3, 2015)

  • Changed a menu item to properly say "Move to Trash" instead of "Delete".
  • When a symbol has overridden properties, we now make it more prominent in the inspector with a little note.
  • Fixed an issue with the Paste command getting disabled in some situations.

  • Fixed a couple of issues with the text of the Geometric Text control not wrapping properly.
  • Fixed an issue with the Rename dialog ignoring white spaces.
  • Fixed an intermittent bug in the List widget we use for the resource navigator which was causing the app to get into a broken state.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.0.5 (Mar 27, 2015)

  • We did a major cleanup of the "Save" and "Save As" code. It's now much cleaner and finally reliable. We also show a little notification when you hit save, so that you have confirmation that autosaving is doing its job.
  • We now commit any text you might have typed if you hit CTRL+S or Save from the menu, like we did in version 2.
  • Fixed a bug when renaming a custom icon asset after using it.
  • Fixed an issue with some menus (Close Project, Print...) staying disabled if you closed all project windows and opened a new project.
  • Made some optimizations while editing symbols. MUCH bigger optimizations in this area will come in the next release, probably next week.
  • Sped up the loading of projects, and improved the "Loading" and "Drawing" messages even more.
  • Fixed an issue with exporting to PNG or PDF when the mockup was bigger than the maximum canvas size.
  • Fixed the handling of the Restore and Delete Permanently menus in the Trash view.
  • Fixed an issue with mockup ordering "not sticking".

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.0.4 (Mar 24, 2015)

  • Fixed some occasional data loss bugs. We changed how we manage the SQLlite connection between the app and the BMPR file, opening and closing it for each operation instead of keeping it open for long periods of time, which is proving to be unreliable.
  • Fixed some bugs that occasionally prevented the application from quitting.
  • Fixed some issues with keyboard shortcuts no longer working after a while.
  • Fixed an issue with not being able to remove some overridden symbols properties.
  • Assets were not shown in the correct order in the Image Inspector pop-up panel.
  • Moved the "Move to Trash" menus to the bottom of the little project navigator menus, and put a separator above them, to lower the chances of clicking it by accident.
  • Fixed an issue with the Previous and Next Mockup menus keyboard shortcuts on Windows.
  • We now remember your choice of Thumbnail or List when you create new projects.
  • We now show tooltips in the project navigator if the name is too long and doesn't fit.
  • Fixed an issue with a Flickr Import dialog string getting truncated on retina screens.
  • Shrunk the minimum application window size to fit in a 800x600 screen.
  • Fixed an issue with renaming a mockup not updating the text if the {mockup-name} macro was used.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 3.999.906 Beta (Feb 4, 2015)

  • Projects:
  • Not only can you have separate windows for different groups of mockups, but all the "stuff" that belongs to a project (mockups, symbols, images, icons) is in ONE file. This makes it much easier to send and move files and keep everything together.
  • Autosave:
  • Your projects are automatically saved. No need to save them manually. And when you restart Mockups everything will be right where you left off.
  • A new user interface:
  • Gone is the annoying flying property inspector! Now you have mockups on the left, and properties on the right. Simple, predictable and quick.
  • We've also merged the properties panel and UI Library into the same area to save space. You can toggle them manually (including hiding it completely) or let the properties panel show when a control is selected and the UI Library show otherwise (the default behavior).
  • And, of course, you can hide both panels by clicking the icon of the selected panel to deselect it, getting you into Zen-like wireframing nirvana.
  • Better Symbols:
  • In the previous version we called Symbols an "advanced feature." Well, no longer. Symbols are now for everyone. Symbols allow you to create templates, masters, and other reusable components to save time and ensure consistency. They are especially useful for big projects and custom controls and are central to our Mockups To Go site.
  • You can now just jump over to the Symbols panel and create a new one from scratch and it will appear in the "Symbols" tab in the UI Library. You can still create them the old-fashioned way (creating a named group and clicking the "Convert To Symbol" button).
  • We also now show Symbols as a list inside their Symbol Library, so you can more easily navigate between them and know which Symbol you're editing.
  • Finally, we make it much easier to import Symbols. Just click the "Import Symbol Library" icon and select the file to import.
  • Better icons:
  • Icons now have their own category in the UI Library so you can drag and drop them just like any other control.
  • Not only that, they show up in the Quick Add results, saving you time when searching by name or keyword.
  • Icon search results are shown below any UI controls that match the text you enter.
  • Better images and assets:
  • There is now a dedicated area for images and other imported assets, accessible from the navigator menu.
  • You can add images to your project without placing them in your mockups first. Click the "Import Asset..." icon to add a file from your computer or the "Download Asset..." icon to add an image from Flickr or the web. Or just drag an image on to the canvas from your computer.
  • You can also delete, rename, clone and download images from the context menu in the panel.
  • New full screen mode:
  • The same options are still there but we've overhauled the experience to make it better for usability testing and presentations. We also got rid of the problem where mockups would "jump around" in full screen mode.
  • Notes:
  • When no controls are selected you'll see a place to add notes in the Properties panel. You can add notes for Mockups, Assets, and Symbols and they will be saved as part of the project.
  • Trash:
  • Balsamiq Mockups 3 now has a Trash for mockups you have deleted. This makes it easy to keep your project tidy as you make progress but still allows you to browse or recover earlier concepts.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.2.20 (Mar 13, 2014)

  • Links in text actually work:
  • This is a hugely requested feature, and one that will make creating prototypes SO MUCH faster and less painful.
  • In short, whenever using the [bracketed text syntax] to specify a link in your controls, you will be able to specify a link target as well, and the link will become clickable in Full Screen Presentation mode or in your exported PDFs.
  • The feature works in the following control types: Paragraph of Text, Geometric Shape, Data Grid, Label, Text Area, Sticky Note, Callout, Tooltip, Arrow, Horizontal and Vertical Curly braces, Checkbox, Radio Button, Tag Cloud, Icon and Label, Multiline Button.
  • New iOS controls:
  • We finally added an iPad control. We also added a Popover control, and revamped the look of our iPhone controls to match iOS7 a little bit more. We also renamed the category in the UI Library from "iPhone" to "iOS" and enhanced the iOS keyboard control to make it fit in both the iPhone and iPad controls.
  • Nudging improvements:
  • This one is a small one but highly requested one. Moving the selection with the arrow keys (what we call "nudging") used to move stuff 2 pixels at the time (20 if you held the SHIFT key down).
  • Now that we have a more precise wireframe skin, sometimes that 2 pixel granularity made it hard to align things. Starting today, we now move things 1 pixel at the time, but if you're in a hurry, you can continue to hold SHIFT down and jump 20 pixels at the time.
  • While we were at it, we also implemented a neat little feature: you now see snap lines appear for a half second while nudging, so you know when to stop.
  • Other changes and improvements:
  • All versions: fixed an issue with the property inspector getting cut off in some cases.
  • All versions: fixed a few issues with scrolling with the mouse wheel. Thank you Alex for reporting it!
  • All versions: fixed an issue with resizing a Sticky Note control to be really really small.

  • All versions: improved the image pop-up panel to show newly imported images right away.
  • Mockups for Desktop: we now show a warning if you ungroup a Symbol in a Symbol Library
  • Mockups for Desktop: Renaming a file when one of them had a symbol with a link overridden with the "No Link" value would break.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.2.18 (Dec 13, 2013)

  • New Image Inspector Pulldown:
  • The image inspector pulldown had been in need of some love for a long time. It only showed images used in the current mockup, it sometimes showed images twice, it didn't show where images came from...in short, it wasn't very useful. That all changes today. The new pulldown is more organized, more visual, faster to use and, we think, much more useful.
  • The Project Assets panel shows all images in your assets folder. If you have site/account assets, a tab will appear for them. If you use web images or images using relative paths that are not project assets, those will show in the Other tab. On the desktop, you'll also see a handy link to open the Account Assets folder.
  • This is a step towards making projects first-class citizens in our app, as it encourages people to use project assets more, following our best practice. We have many more steps planned, but as you know, we like to ship things one little free-standing piece at the time, so that we can get your feedback on it.
  • Projects come to Mockups for Google Drive:
  • We are continuing the work to bring all of our product versions to feature parity with each other. With today's release, Mockups for Google Drive moves a huge step forward in that direction. In fact, it even gets some features that other versions don't have yet!
  • Here's a list of today's biggest improvements:
  • The Project Browser: just like in myBalsamiq, you can now see all the mockups in your Google Drive folder, and quickly jump from one to the other to edit them.
  • You can also sort your mockup with drag and drop, as well as create new mockups, and clone, rename or delete existing ones, all from within the editor.
  • Project Assets Support: you can now see images saved in your assets/ folder directly in the UI Library, in the new Image Property Inspector panel, and in the Image Import dialog.
  • Links Support: yes! You can now finally specify links between mockups, just like in our other versions.
  • To navigate between mockups, just go full screen and click around!
  • Real Time Collaboration: this is huge, and a long time coming. You can now collaborate on each mockup in real time with others. Just share your folder full of BMMLs and assets, then when you both open the Mockups for Google Drive editor at the same time you will see the other person's edits happen in real time. Try it out, it's awesome.
  • As usual, everything is auto-saved, all the time.
  • As an added bonus, if you use the Google Drive Desktop Sync client, you can collaborate between someone using Mockups for Desktop and Mockups for Google Drive pretty seamlessly! Whoa, right?
  • We think you'll love the new changes, let us know if you run into any issues and we'll fix them right up!
  • The last two big features missing, which are coming very soon, are automatic fixing of links on file rename (we call it 'the relinker'), and Symbol support!
  • Only $5 per month for all this goodness is starting to feel pretty darn cheap ...you'd better act now before we raise our prices... ;)
  • Designate a Secondary Billing Administrator in myBalsamiq:
  • Up until today, the site owner was the only person who could make billing changes to a myBalsamiq site. This is often not ideal, as the person with purchasing power might not be the same person that needs to manage (or even use) myBalsamiq.
  • Starting today the site owner can designate a staff member as the secondary billing contact. This allows them to see the payments page, renew, upgrade, downgrade and download past myBalsamiq receipts. Try it out!
  • Other fixes and improvements:
  • Mockups for Desktop: double clicking on a file to open the app did not open the new file in OS X Maverick (fixed in 2.2.17).
  • Mockups for Desktop: the application would grow in size on Windows if you opened it by clicking on bmml files on disk (fixed in 2.2.17).
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed a memory leak on Windows 8 when the app was not in focus (fixed in 2.2.17). Thanks Julianna Cs. for reporting it!
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed the way we encoded Symbol paths in the BMML in 2.2.16 (fixed in 2.2.17).
  • Mockups for Desktop: Added a "Rename Mockup" menu item to the File menu, to expose this awesome little feature a bit more. Thanks Jacqueline S. for requesting it!
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed an issue with command line export hanging sometimes. Thank you Dave B. for reporting it!
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed an issue with the app window growing by 20 pixels on Windows when opening a bmml file by double-clicking on it. Thanks Andreas F. and B for reporting it!
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed an issue with the positioning of the tab for newly cloned mockups (now they stay next to the original mockup, they don't jump to the end). Thanks Dave Perkins for bringing this up! This also fixes Milos Krocian's bug report.
  • myBalsamiq: big performance improvements on editor startup time.
  • myBalsamiq: added an automatic retry mechanism on image uploads (should cut down on the Error #2038 messages).
  • Mockups for Confluence: made it compatible with Confluence 5.4.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.2.16 (Oct 25, 2013)

  • New color picker and color names:
  • You can now enter any HEX color (we even support 3-digit gray notations), or type the name of a color like "white", "black", "yellow". If you roll over one of the built-in colors the tooltip will show you that color's name as well.
  • New tiny char counter"
  • Speaking of small but very useful improvements: after learning how Balsamiq Champion Glenn Murray and others are using Mockups to do copy-writing, we added a small character counter to the text editor:
  • You'll see this counter when editing Labels or Paragraphs of text controls, and you'll always know if you're within your character limits or not.
  • Because of this change, we removed the little known l0rem shortcut (the one with the zero instead of the O), which gave you some lorem ipsum text with character counts sprinkled around. The tiny character counter is much more useful and fine-grained. The regular "lorem" auto-expand shortcut is still there, don't worry. :)
  • What else is new:
  • All versions: you can now rotate images!
  • All versions: moved the group breadcrumb bar / crop bar / symbol overriding bar to the bottom, to avoid the jarring "jump down" of your controls.

  • All versions: Fixed the alignment of text in radio button group when text wraps.
  • All versions: Fixed an issue with cropped groups sometimes changing location when the file is opened. Thanks Reiner S. for reporting it!
  • Mockups for Desktop: we deprecated the tag in BalsamiqMockups.cfg and replaced it with a more flexible and much easier to use . See the updated documentation here. If you had a documentsPath tag already set up you don't have to do anything, Mockups for Desktop will update your cfg file automatically on the next startup.

  • Mockups for Desktop: made the app more resilient to malformed paths in the BalsamiqMockups.cfg config file.
  • Mockups for Desktop: we now show a little notification whenever you re-order your mockups to let you know that the new order has been saved for the future.
  • Mockups for Desktop: improved the UX of the file browser. It now has some nice little drag handle to show you that you can drag tabs to re-order them, and the (x) close icon is only shown on hover when the file browser is on the side.
  • Mockups for Desktop: Fixed an issue when renaming a file when other files in the same folder had unicode characters in their names.
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed an occasional issue when exporting to PDF with no margins.

  • myBalsamiq: we no longer trap CTRL+T in the editor, letting the browser open a new tab as expected.

  • Mockups for Confluence: compare versions in wiki page history works again.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.2.4 (Jan 21, 2013)

  • We changed the code that draws our custom mouse cursor to a more modern flash API. The result was not only a MUCH more responsive mouse (it no longer lags behind), but also a big performance improvement of the application overall. Try it out, it should feel noticeably snappier, especially in the in-browser versions.
  • You can now link to URLs! As pre-announced in December, you can now specify Web Addresses (URLs) - http://, https:// and even mailto: - as link targets in all controls that support linking. Here's how it works. There's a new "Web Address..." menu item in the Link property inspector. Notice that we gave web URLs a different icon so that you can spot them easily.
  • We switched to a more modern text rendering engine (Adobe TLF), which finally allows us to support font kerning in our Balsamiq Sans font. If you're someone who knows and cares about kerning, the difference is staggering. If you don't, just know that your eyes will thank you after a while.
  • We now have automatic fallback for glyphs that are not included in the font. You'll no longer need to turn on "Use System Fonts"
  • We added EXTREMELY LIMITED RTL (Right-To-Left) text support. As we said in the pre-release announcement last month, we're pretty ignorant when it comes to right-to-left support in software. We have received a long list of TODO items from some of you (thank you!), and we'll attack them slowly but surely. In the meantime, this release goes from "RTL characters don't even show up" to "I can type RTL characters and see them". Not exactly "full support" by a long shot, but a step in the right direction, right?
  • Editing text (adding or removing lines of text or even reshuffling them) will now maintain the correct selection and links! Thank you László, Jeron, Andy, John E. (via Email), Roman Florian for reporting this annoying bug which we've wanted to fix for a long time.
  • Added support for ~this notation~ for strikethrough text, in all controls.
  • Added support for {size:40}this notation{size} for setting the absolute size of part of your text, in all controls. {size:+2}relative size{size} will come in the future (it's a lot harder than you'd think!). Thank you Jenni and Win7Guru for the requests.
  • Added multi-line support via \r to the following control types: Alert box, Arrow, Breadcrumbs, Button Bar, Callout, Checkbox, Checkboxgroup, Field Set, Geometric Shape, Icon and label, Image, Link, Linkbar, Multiline Button, Pointy Button, Radio Button, Radio Button Group, Search Box, Subtitle and Title.
  • Made some performance improvements when UI Library is visible - and we have further improvements planned for the next release.
  • Fixed a bug with the "treat as markup" right-click menu not working for small controls. Thank you Anders for reporting it!
  • Fixed the "property inspector becomes huge if controls have long text lines" bug. Thank you Joe for reporting it!
  • Fixed the "couldn't drag controls in the top 20 pixels of the canvas" bug.
  • We fixed literally hundreds of little visual bugs in how the controls draw themselves at different sizes: the skins have never looked so good.
  • The menu control now supports using the checkbox or radio button, the label and the keyboard shortcut, all in the same line. Thank you Stu (via email).
  • We fixed the graph paper background when zoomed in or out. Thank you Shannon (via email).
  • We now deal with corrupted bmmls more gracefully.
  • The image inspector pulldown now correctly shows which image is selected.
  • Removed a bug which looked like an easter egg. Thank you Andrew Rowe and Patrik Boström for reporting it.
  • All versions that support Symbols: you now can see which symbol library a control comes from when hovering over it in the UI library and when selecting it (in the property inspector title).
  • All versions that support linking: we now show a "broken link" icon for files that are no longer found. Thanks Erik, robin and Matty Sallin for requesting it.
  • Bumped app requirement from Adobe Air 2.5 to 2.6 (which still runs on linux don't worry).
  • Added links to Local Store and Documents folders in the About box. Handy for debugging!
  • Fixed support for AltGr+S and other keys in some keyboard layouts. Thank you gk.klimek , sergeySafonov, Tomasz and Andi for reporting it.
  • Fixed several file name encoding issues on Windows.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.2.2 (Sep 18, 2012)

  • A new editor look and feel:
  • As a programmer, I have always cared more about making my software SOLID rather than having it look pretty. When I was back at Adobe, my friend and colleague Nigel Pegg would spend hours tweaking the speed of an animation tween and working with our designer Tim Allen to make sure that everything looked beautiful and pixel-perfect. The three of us made a great team.
  • When I started Balsamiq, I was on my own. I did my best to make the Mockups skin look OK, but I clearly never made the look and feel a top-priority. Just like a wireframe, I wanted to make sure the app worked well before spending time and money making it pretty.
  • It's been four years now, and it's time for Mockups itself to grow up. We have a world-class graphic designer on our team, and it's time we start using his skills to the fullest. Mike started by redesigning myBalsamiq while still in beta, and now we're taking his gorgeous, minimalistic design sensibility to Mockups itself, and it feels great. In fact, it's making me appreciate how important graphic design is, even early on. We live and learn...
  • Our goal with the new look and feel was to make something that is beautiful, professional, incredibly intuitive, all the while staying out of your way as much as possible.
  • Since we run on Windows, Mac, Linux and the Web, we needed a look that didn't try to mimic the native look and feel of the controls, but also one that didn't scream "Look at me, I'm a Flash application!"
  • We think Mike did an amazing job with this new look, it's truly gorgeous and does its job extremely well.
  • It makes working in Mockups for hours and hours an even smoother and fun experience.
  • An additional skin for your wireframes:
  • The fact that wireframes created with Mockups look hand drawn has been one of our best ideas yet. It makes it obvious to everyone that the design is NOT final, and encourages people to give honest feedback, which is what it's all about. It also has an instantly-recognizeable, playful character that makes everyone who uses Mockups a little happier at their job every day.
  • We love our sketch-like skin and are very proud of it, but over the years we've heard from many of you that it doesn't fit every situation.
  • The first person to raise the issue was famous British designer Andy Budd, back in 2009! In his My First Impressions of Balsamiq article, he argues that our skin had TOO MUCH character, it distracted stakeholders from looking at the structure of the wireframe. I think his criticism came mostly because we used Comic Sans as a font back then (we've since switched to our own, hypoallergenic font), but his point was valid, the playful look and feel didn't fit all situations.
  • Over the years, as Mockups became mainstream, we have heard the same argument from many of you: you love Mockups and want to use it on every project, but sometimes its playful character didn't help, your awesome wireframes weren't being taken seriously by your boss / your graphic designer / your client.
  • We even heard from someone who did all the thinking in Mockups, but then had to painfully re-create each of their wireframes in a different tool just to present them to their clients. Ouch.
  • The Sketch skin is the one you know and love, only cleaned up a little bit. It is still the default and what we recommend people use most of the time.
  • Our goals with it were to make a skin that still conveyed "this is not final" while also disappearing in the background as much as possible, the goal was for it to be "totally vanilla".
  • After experimenting a while with some product design skin in the style of sketch-a-day, we landed on a clean, straight-lines look that we feel is timeless because of its simplicity.
  • Switching from a skin to the other should be totally painless, most things won't move around at all. We think most of you will do all the thinking in the Sketch skin, and only switch to the Wireframe skin when it's time to present your work, when you're trying to "sell" your designs to other stakeholders.
  • A personal note from Peldi:
  • On a personal level, these two feature were a bit painful for me to work on, which partly explains why I postponed them for so long. Let me explain.
  • My fear was that a cleaner look and feel and a cleaner skin would make Mockups lose too much of the character that has made it so successful. I didn't want it to look like "just another pro design tool", boring in its similarity with all the others.
  • Well, I have been using Mockups 2.2 for weeks now, and I gotta say, I can't go back. The new look and feel of the app doesn't feel boring, it just feels RIGHT. Whenever I have to use 2.1 to debug a customer's issue, my eyes hurt and I can't believe we've been so successful with such an ugly app.
  • The new wireframe skin is actually REALLY FUN TO USE, darn it! It totally grew on me. My wife Mariah drew all the controls of the original sketch skin, so falling in love with a skin that she didn't draw feels a bit like I'm cheating on her! You understand my internal conflicts here, right?!?!? ;)
  • Another thought about these two features: I built and launched Mockups in 2008 as a programmer who had developed a passion for UX, but was totally self-taught and didn't really know anyone in the IA / UX industry. We can safely say that Mockups has come out of left field in the UX industry, mostly introduced by developers and product managers.
  • We have never marketed Mockups directly to UX professionals, because in some way we didn't feel that it was good enough for them. With the 2.2 release, four years after the original launch, I think we are ready to start changing that perception. We know lots of UXers who already rely on Mockups, and we think that today's release elevates Mockups to become a first-class citizen in the UX professional toolbox.
  • We hope those who considered Mockups a toy will give it a second look now, it has really come a long way since we first started, Comic Sans and all...
  • A new Site Map control:

  • myBalsamiq: if you use "Use System Fonts" in your mockups, the generated mockup images will now properly show your text.
  • myBalsamiq: fixed an issue with using images in symbols.
  • myBalsamiq: improved handling of JPEG assets. Thank you Sophie G. for reporting it.

  • Mockups for Desktop: renaming a Mockup would position it at the end of the list sometimes. Fixed!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.1.1 (Jan 18, 2012)

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 2.0.24 (Jan 18, 2012)

  • Major optimization to the skin assets and icons, which results in dramatic improvement in loading times for the web and plugin versions of Balsamiq Mockups.
  • All versions: improved the angle of rotation of the arrow points
  • All versions: standardized our licensing language around "License Information", which includes a License Name and a License Key. We were using a combination of Your Full Name, Organization Name, Serial Key and other terms before, which was confusing. It's hard to come up with language that applies both to single individuals, companies and software resellers. I really didn't like the legalese term "Licensee Name"... we're optimistic that this License Info=Name+Key combination will work.
  • All versions: Icons that don't belong to any bucket in the Icon Library now can be found in a new "Other" bucket (other than the "All" bucket of course).
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed our native .deb package to remove the Ubuntu 11.04 package is of bad quality issue.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.10 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • New features:
  • All Versions: if you add a row with * or – in the Paragraph of text control, we transform it into a bullet (click below to enlarge). Thanks to ruben for his initial feature request, and for everyone else who chimed in!
  • All Versions: you can now hold down SHIFT when moving to make the selection snap to the original X or Y axis. Combined with ALT, this makes for very quick creation of rows or columns of controls of the same type. Thanks to everyone who asked for this feature: Mitchell Fox started this thread 11 months ago, michael.aird this one 6 months ago, and Doug Hughes this one a month ago, but it was Jenni Merrifield’s latest comment that made me decide to get off my butt and just code the darn thing. Thank you Jenni for your continuous feedback and enthusiasm! :)
  • All Versions: lorem now works in the middle of a paragraph and not just at the end, and no longer shows you character count numbers. If you want the numbers, type l0rem instead, with a zero instead of an o. Nerdy, huh? :)
  • Mockups for Confluence, JIRA and XWiki: when doing a “Save and Continue” operation, we now show a little notifier that says “Saved!”, or an error if the save operation failed for some reason (say your administrator restarted the wiki, or your connection went down, or something). This is an old Adam Wride idea, thanks as always Adam!
  • Bug Fixes:
  • All Versions: fixed this bug about not being able to make the first item in a menu bar NOT bold. Thanks Mr Joseph Tate for reporting it!
  • All Versions: bigger font size for combo boxes and pill buttons. Thanks to Roman for asking for this one.
  • All Versions: Quick Add text no longer gets cut off on Windows. Thanks to and Jon Edlund and Martin Kemp for reporting this (via email).
  • All Versions: fixed another instance of the “controls loose their properties” bug. I think we caught it all now, but if you still see this, let us know!
  • All Versions: fixed a bug with moving objects with the arrows after a small resize. Thanks Jon Boardman for the bug report!
  • All Versions: Replaced the ugly “Error #2035″ message to a more human-friendly “Image not Found” error in images. By the way, have you seen our tutorial on how to minimize seeing this error in the first place? Check it out: Working with Projects in Mockups for Desktop.
  • All Versions: fixed a bug with image paths when dragged from the desktop onto Mockups. Thanks to jochen and nico.rouanne for the debugging help with this one.
  • Mockups for Desktop: opening a file by double-clicking it now correctly sets the “last open path” internal variable, so that when you go to open another file, we’ll pre-select the folder of the file you double-clicked on. Easy, huh? ;) Thanks to Besi for the detailed bug report.
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed other issues around the “show me the last open path” feature.
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed a bug when doing two consecutive “Save As…” operations. Thanks to Mo for reporting this one yesterday.
  • Mockups for Desktop: changed the text of the “Your mockups were exported to folder XYZ” notifier. We no longer show all the paths since it wasn’t really helpful and kind-of ugly. Thanks again to Jon Boardman for reporting this one.
  • Mockups for Confluence, JIRA and XWiki: fixed a bug with doing a “Save and Continue”, changing something in the mockup and leaving the page. The Javascript alert to warn you about the unsaved changes wouldn’t show up in this case. It does now. Thanks so much to Ed Scharrer for reporting this one via email.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.9 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • New Features:
  • All Versions: New {color} modifier for text. You can now use the {color:#123456} modifier to color parts of your text, like so: {color:#FF0000}this is red{color} or {color:00FF00}this is green{color}. Notice that the macro works both with and without the # in front of the HEX color value. This simple one-line change takes care of a number of feature requests. Here’s the main thread by anamitra banerji, trubliphone, derrickjon, Adi Roiban and Jon Daues, but there are others: this one by Phil Haselden and others, this one this one by Kevin, this one by adrienne, this one by walter.smith and this one by Adi Roiban. Thanks for your patience everyone! :)
  • All Versions: New notifications: we have removed some annoying, flow-interrupting dialogs and changed them to growl-style pop-up notifiers. This is a classic example of something that’s been on our TODO since day one but haven’t gotten around to implementing until today – two years later! Funny how that happens…thanks so much Mike for whipping up a design for the notifiers in no time.
  • Huge thanks to Robert M Münch, Andi and Philipp Quaet-Feslem for the input and to the ever-awesome Jon Boardman of Red Gate software for all the help debugging this new feature. These are the dialogs that got replaced with notifications: “your mockup was exported to PNG”, “your mockups were exported to folder XYZ”, “your PDF is ready”, “the file you’re editing is read-only” and “your mockup was exported to XML”. Yay for less distractions! :)
  • All Versions: Added Align support to the Geometric Shapes control, which also finally fixes the pesky “words go missing” bug:
  • Mockups for Desktop: opening files via the “Open Others in Same Folder” right-click menu item now opens the in alphabetical order! This was part of the Projects feature request discussion.
  • Mockups for Desktop: added a new “the file you’re editing was moved or deleted” notification. We now deal with this case properly. This is another “Jon Boardman special“, so you should all thank him. :)
  • Bug Fixes:
  • All Versions: dramatically improved performance on Windows XP, and improved performance on Mac and Linux as well. Our performance improvement when scrolling a large mockup was a little too aggressive, and due to an Adobe Air limitation it made XP really slow. It should be all better now, thanks aaandre for reporting the bug and to Marco for fixing it quickly!
  • All Versions: moved the zoom pop-up in the toolbar to the right a bit, so that it doesn’t interfere with the lock icon any more. Thanks Tony Goggin for the bug report!
  • All Versions: renamed “Check box” to “Checkbox”, thanks moflaherty for pointing this out!
  • All Versions: finally, FINALLY fixed the “mouse goes crazy if you drag something outside of the Mockups window and release the mouse while you’re outside” bug. This actually takes care of a number of other bugs (this, this), it’s awesome. Marco, you are a GENIUS for figuring this out, thank you thank you thank you.
  • All Versions: fixed a bug with the algorithm that positions of the property inspector, it got broken when we added group editing, sorry about that. Thanks to Joseph Tate and kbromberger for bringing this up here and here.
  • All Versions: moved the default position of new elements added via Quick Add down 10 pixels, so that it doesn’t interfere with the group editing breadcrumb bar. Thanks to Andi and Nelson for the bug reports!
  • All Versions: fixed the vertical alignment of the ComboBox control. Thanks Tony for bringing it up and for the debugging help!
  • All Versions: fixed a bug with the web panel of image import feature. Thanks mattcruise for the bug report!
  • All Versions: fixed a bug with positioning of groups when copied and pasted. Thanks Brian Rittermann for the bug report!
  • Mockups for Desktop: Version 2.0 of Adobe Air broke our full-screen mode on Windows Vista: you could see the menu bar while in full-screen. Weird! With the help of Alisa(Ying) Wang from Adobe, we were able to work around the bug. Thanks Mandi for reporting it!
  • Mockups for JIRA: fixed a bug that gave you a “EULA Violation” warning if you updated the plugin during your last month of maintenance. It’s all better now.
  • Mockups Web Demo: fixed a typo in our nagging screen. How nice of Nathan P. to bring it up via email!
  • Mockups for XWiki: fixed a bug with the way we parse the mockup macro on the page in some cases. Huge thanks to Julian Whitaker for reporting the bug and helping us debug it!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.8 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • Here’s what’s new in today’s release:
  • All versions: we fixed the elusive “properties revert to default” bug, which was caused by using a slider in a property inspector and accidentally moving the mouse outside of the Mockups window. I know, crazy huh? Thanks to Diana, Jim Jarret and Chris Michael for the debugging help!
  • All versions: you can now hit ENTER or F2 to enter a group to edit its contents. Thanks Adi Roiban for the good idea!
  • Mockups for Desktop: when pasting from your clipboard, we detect if it contains BMML and interpret it properly for you. This was a feature request by Max Andersen (via Twitter), who needs it for his SWT to BMML tool.
  • Mockups for Desktop: added {mockup-name} to Label and Paragraph controls. It’s like {mockup-path}, but it only returns the name of the mockup file.
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed a bug with exporting to PDF while inside a group. Thanks John Booker for the bug report (via email).
  • Mockups for XWiki: fixed a bug with the image dialog.
  • We also fixed a number of issues with myBalsamiq, and plan on updating the beta on our production machines this week.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.7 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • Small release this week but packing a powerful punch. Here’s what’s new:
  • we changed the font for the chrome of the application. We now use Lucida Grande on Mac and Lucida Sans Unicode on Windows and Linux. This fixes a number of bugs related to using non-latin characters in file names and links, as well as making the application look cleaner overall. Many thanks go to Byungchol who pointed out how important this bug was to our asian customers via this comment, and of course to basaaja, Yuta Kitade and lei han for reporting the issues in the first place!
  • One more thing: since we no longer embed the SegoeUI font, we shaved ~300k off of the download size, which makes the app faster to load!
  • with the help of Jian Zhang from the Air engineering team at Adobe, we were able to fix the dreaded “stuck at setting things up” bug that some Windows users were seeing (it happens when your “My Documents” folder is on a network drive that’s not connected when you launch Mockups). We now detect this condition quickly and just run the app without paying attention to the account assets folder.
  • fixed a bug with CTRL+[ and CTRL+] also affecting the z-Order of the selection. They now are dedicated for increasing and decreasing the font size of the selection (the feature we introduced last week)
  • HUGE performance improvement when scrolling a large mockup. Try it, the difference is amazing. Thanks to haqwin for getting our investigation started via this bug report!
  • fixed a bug with Underline not being selected by default in the inspector for the Link and Link Bar controls. Thanks to Patrick Schick for reporting this.
  • Cleaned up the look of the UI Library a bit (removed the hairline border around it and improved the selection color)

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.5 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • All versions: finished fixing the double click a word in a text area freezes application thanks to new steps by Matt.
  • All versions: fixed a few funny issues with Quick Add, when pressing the down arrow to scroll down the list. Reported by jogurt_hu, Matt, and Joe Eckert. Thanks guys!

  • Mockups for FogBugz: fixed an issue with saving Mockups. Thanks Stepan Riha for reporting it!
  • New Features:
  • All versions: added support for CTRL+[ and CTRL+] to shrink and grow text size. We already had CTRL+ALT+- and CTRL+ALT+= to do this, but the new shortcuts are handier. Thank you Justin Grant for asking for it!
  • All versions: you can now dock the Property Inspector even when the UI Library is at the top.
  • Mockups for Desktop: added support for the {mockup-path} macro to the Label control, a good idea by Andy Little.
  • Mockups for Desktop: we now remember the undo stack when you switch mockups! Thanks to Isaac Wood and Eva Kaniasty for reporting this.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.8.1 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • Next feature: Colored Stickies!
  • Did you ever get confused over who added which comment on a Mockup? Thanks to this great little idea by Jon Boardman, now you can add sticky notes of your favorite color!
  • A few more features and bug fixes:
  • Ungrouping is now DRAMATICALLY faster than before.
  • Grouping and Ungrouping no longer bring the selection to the front, a very annoying old bug reported by berl and Michael as well as Nikolay Karev, Vinil, s3a, Jenni Merrifield and Luca Perugini.
  • Made the selection color, the focus color and the link color darker. Thank you Eric, Philipp, Andi, Simone, László Bővíz, robin and Roman, for reporting it (here, here and here), sorry we didn’t choose wisely enough the first time around.
  • Fixed an Accordion auto-sizing bug, thanks Roman for bringing it up! Also fixed an issue with the Accordion not using the right font when exported to PNG/PDF.
  • Added border toggle support to menu bar control (an old request by carol.a.manson)
  • Fixed this crazy “undo resize” bug that Jon Boardman found.
  • Fixed a little but annoying bug with the Link Inspector pulldown. Thanks farans for reporting it.
  • Fixed a couple of weird bugs with entering TAB characters in paragraphs of text. It should all be back to normal now.
  • Fixed a LARGE number of little annoying Undo/Redo issues. This very important feature has never looked this good, you should be thankful that this one of Marco’s pet features. :)
  • Improvements to Mockups for Desktop
  • MAJOR performance improvements in application startup time.
  • MAJOR performance improvement when opening multiple mockups at once.
  • MAJOR performance improvement when doing a “Close All”.
  • Added “Close Other Mockups” menu item (in the right-click menu on the bottom tabs). Also very fast. Thanks Jeff Stewart for asking for this and sorry it took me 10 months to implement it, it only took 15 minutes…
  • Added “Open Others in Same Folder” menu item in the right-click menu on the bottom tabs. Also very fast.
  • If you have a lot of mockups open at once, we now show a pull-up menu to help you select mockups more easily.
  • This is a big help those of you who are patiently waiting for the project feature. Thanks to Roman, Jessica from Formulate, Philipp and Dan Castle for the input!
  • Cleaned up the File menu a bit (added some separators, renamed some items for clarity…). Thanks Leon for bringing it up and Mike for designing it.
  • On Linux, we now set Mockups as the default application to open .BMML files. Thanks Omarello for bringing it up.
  • We now save your selection when switching mockups (an idea by dmland). Try it, it’s really cool!

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.7.12 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • Text Orientation on Labels:
  • You can now select 3 types of orientation in the Label control.
  • Thanks so much to kaveh, Vega, Chris Bennet, Luke Freiler, Catherine, Srinivasan S., yoliker, grid212, djzeaman, Ilya Ryzhenkov, dB., Adam Lang, Alex D. and Carl Robinson for requesting this handy little feature (here, here and here)!
  • This was a quick feature to add, but it relies on something that’s only available with Flash Player 10, which we have started requiring only a couple of months ago. It’s interesting how even a little feature can only be added “when the time is right”.
  • I’m more and more getting the sense that building a software product is like cooking a big asian stir-fry…you have to wait for the right moment to throw in each vegetable… ;)
  • For those of you who are waiting for Right-To-Left orientation, please be patient for a little longer. Adding RTL support requires us to switch to a whole new Text Layout engine. It’s something we plan on doing (it will take care of many other issues), but it’s not easy. We plan on tackling it later this summer, after we’ve shipped components and the web app.
  • Bug Fix: Colors are now back to normal
  • I had made what seemed to be a no-brainer optimization in how we apply color to controls, which resulted in an UGLY bug.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.7.10 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • All Versions: A new color palette!
  • The new colors are less LOUD and more useful in a wireframe, and they are finally sorted in a way that makes sense. I’ve been using them in my mockups in the last few days and I really like how they look now. A big thank you goes out to adrienne who gave me the right input at the right time for this.
  • All Versions: you can now simulate multiple selection properly: just add a borderless canvas above what you need to mark as selected, pick the right color, make it 50% opaque and voila’, multiple selection! Here’s an image to show how it works:
  • One day we’ll make this easier by just letting you multi-select the pop-up list in the Selection inspector, but at least now you have a workaround until then! :) Thanks to Phoenix, Andi and others who have asked for this in the past.
  • All Versions: fixed a bug in the icon library. Thank you Heidi Ulrich for reporting it, with screenshots!
  • All Versions: changed the default color for links to be one of the colors in the new palette. It’s more subtle, less loud. I like it:
  • All Versions: added a new row color for List and DataGrid controls. The old one had a shade of green in it, which was a bit confusing. This one is #EEEEEE which is nice and neutral
  • All Versions: changed the background from gradient to solid white. It looks cleaner, and it makes it possible to use white rectangles as masks, which is useful in some cases.
  • All Versions: removed selection color from the progress bars (they are now gray). Progress is not a selection, so why did I make those green in the first place? I can’t recall. :)
  • Mockups for Desktop: You can now customize the selection color! It’s just a new tag in the BalsamiqMockups.cfg file: as an example, add FF0000 to make the selection color be red (#FF0000). Full instructions here. This was a VERY popular request, originally by Michael Bourque. Thanks to all who participated in the discussion!
  • Mockups for Desktop: new “edit this mockup” button in full-screen.
  • This is very useful when you’re navigating around a big prototype and need to make a change halfway through. Thanks to Mike, Bill Muchmore, echan1, Darren and Victor Gamolsky for asking for this very useful little feature in these two threads.
  • Mockups for Desktop: fixed a bug where going full-screen would set your mockup as “dirty” (showing the * before its name as if you had modified it) even if it wasn’t.

New in Balsamiq Wireframes 1.7.5 (Nov 17, 2010)

  • New features:
  • All versions: Added 34 new icons!
  • Mockups for JIRA is now compatible with JIRA 4.1, which just released last week.
  • All versions: Groups now support linking and can have a name. These are the first step in our development of the components feature, whose time has finally come. Marco is deep in it, refactoring the innards of our code to allow you to edit group contents with double-click and all that good stuff. As always, we’re doing this incrementally and with your help, so stay tuned on Twitter (@balsamiq) for updates!
  • All versions: Added the “Select None” command (CTRL+SHIFT+A).
