Booknizer Changelog

What's new in Booknizer 10.3 Build 616

Aug 17, 2021
  • Improvements and new features in Booknizer 10:
  • New engine:
  • Booknizer includes a number of significant improvements thanks to the new internal engine. Most of the old code was completely rewritten to get rid of bugs and include modern optimizations.
  • Support for picture download via HTTPS:
  • Because of the recent requirement for better protection of personal details, most sites started to serve all content (including pictures) via the secure HTTPS protocol. Booknizer supports this protocol for all types of content, too. As a result, search results come with covers and photos again.
  • Quick filter for authors:
  • In previous versions of Booknizer, the quick filter menu always referred to books. Booknizer can apply quick filters to authors, too. When the "Authors" tab is active, the menu switches to the authors view automatically.
  • Look up any highlighted phrase in Google:
  • For your convenience, Booknizer offers an easy way to find more information about anything. Just highlight a phrase from a book description / biography / another item, right-click it and choose to find on Google.
  • If the book is already available in your library, a warning is shown:
  • Booknizer shows a message under the search result list, if you select a book that is already available in your collection. This may help you when you want to add multiple books with the same title.
  • When you type into lists, the program searches for the best match:
  • While you can select a value from the dropdown list, this may become pretty difficult if the list is huge. In such case, you can simply type several letters into the field, and Booknizer will scroll the list down to the first relevant result. If it's the only result, you can simply hit "Save", and everything is set.
  • The new publication year field can hold the year of a particular edition:
  • In Booknizer, you can easily add multiple editions of the same book, for example, a hard cover edition, a paperback, an e-book, etc. However, each edition may have its own publication year, which may differ from the year when the book was first released. Booknizer adds a special field on the "Editions" tab, publication year.
  • The total cost of your collection is now shown in the statistics window (according to the price entered or downloaded):
  • If you download or enter actual prices of your books into the corresponding field of Booknizer, the program can display the total cost of your library. For this information, check the "Statistics" window (F7).
  • Added new download capabilities to work with modern site engines:
  • As new technologies become popular, some information may become unavailable for older versions of Booknizer. Booknizer includes a number of improvements and supports the latest methods of information retrieval.
  • Enabling Group Operations in a single click:
  • In Booknizer you can simply move the mouse cursor over the list of covers / photos and select an item by clicking on a checkbox that appears. This enables Group Operations, allowing to change / update multiple items at once. This is different from previous version, where you needed to enable Group Operations separately.
  • Tree view of the main list is activated by the button at the bottom of the list:
  • Previous versions of Booknizers had an additional tab for the tree view, Collection. It allowed to sort your collection of books in many ways, including custom ones. Booknizer keeps this functionality, but it moved to the "Tree view" mode button at the bottom of the list.
  • Better structured settings window:
  • Another improvement in Booknizer is its cleaner settings window with a tree-like navigation. Now you can easily see the complete structure of the available settings and adjustments.
  • The directory tree hides after the file scanner finishes finding some books:
  • In Booknizer, you can add audio books and e-books from files, using the built-in file scanner. For your convenience, Booknizer hides the directory tree of the scanner once the search is finished and some books are found. Thus, you can use the complete width of the window to preview and edit book titles before sending them to download. Of course, you can easily get the directory structure back by dragging the divider.
  • Updates in interface scripts:
  • All available interface scripts (modern, orange, breeze) were updated to include new features and optimizations.
  • Fixed downloading information about book series:
  • A problem was fixed that prevented Booknizer from downloading information about book series.
  • Various bugs fixed:
  • There are numerous small improvements and bug fixes in Booknizer.

New in Booknizer 8.1 Build 474 (Jan 3, 2017)

  • The list of authors can now be sorted by the last name:
  • Previously all people (authors, translators, editors) in Booknizer were sorted according to their full name. Booknizer 8.1 introduces a special field, sorting name.
  • This field is filled out automatically, moving the last name to the beginning. You can edit it manually by clicking the "..." button next to the person's name in the "Edit info" window.
  • To apply different sorting rules to the main list of authors, click "Manage" and select "Sort authors list by".
  • The report builder can add the date when the report is created:
  • The easy-to-use report builder allows to create new reports in just a few clicks. Not it also includes the option that allows to print or export the date when the corresponding report is created.
  • User comments / reviews can be downloaded from the internet:
  • Booknizer downloads such information as book summary, author, cover, contents, and more. The new version is also capable of downloading user comments / reviews.
  • Extended filters allow to set their own sorting rules:
  • Extended filters allow to create a fixed set of rules and apply them to the main list of books to display books with certain properties. In Booknizer 8.1, you can also override the selected sorting rule for any particular extended filter. Thus, when you apply such filter, its own sorting rule will also be applied.
  • A new type of person - artist (artwork designer) - was added:
  • Booknizer 8.1 adds a new type of person - book artist (artwork). You can find this field on the "Other" tab of the "Edit info" window for the book.
  • Prices can now be imported from Litres:
  • Litres is a popular Russian-language online store for e-books. Booknizer 8.1 can download and save price, along with other details about books.
  • Books without location can be easily displayed:
  • If you specify location of your paper books, but skipped several ones and now want to find them, you can easily do that in Booknizer 8.1. Just switch to the "Collection" tab and select the empty entry under "Location".
  • Fixed missing buttons for adding and removing editors:
  • The previous version of Booknizer lost its buttons for adding and removing editors on the "Other" tab of the "Edit info" window. Booknizer 8.1 fixes this problem.
  • Fixed other small bugs:
  • Booknizer 8.1 includes other small improvements and bug fixes. Use our support form or forum to report a bug or suggest a new feature!

New in Booknizer 8.0 Build 458 (Nov 27, 2015)

  • Information about book series (title of the series and number in the series) can now be downloaded:
  • Booknizer 8.0 can extract and save information about book series, if it is available in the corresponding online book database. This information is extracted both when you download information about books and when you download bibliographies of authors
  • If book prices are specified, you can see the total cost of your home library in the statistics window:
  • You can enter what a particular book costed on the "Editions" tab of the "Edit info" window for the corresponding book.
  • Booknizer 8.0 is capable of showing the total cost of your home library. Just open the Statistics window (Reports - Statistics) and select the "Total cost of the collection" item
  • For authors, a birth date B.C. can now be specified:
  • If you home library contains books by ancient (B.C.) authors, you can now specify the correct birth / death years of the authors. Just set the "B.C." flag (otherwise all dates are considered A.D.) in the "Edit info" window for the author.
  • When audio books are played in the built-in player, the playback position is saved:
  • Booknizer can be configured to play audio books in its built-in or in any external player. In the new version, the built-in player remembers the last played position and starts at the very point where you stopped the last time
  • Edition title is shown in the corresponding column on the "Editions" tab:
  • Booknizer allows you to assign your own names to any editions that you have. You can simply select a value from the "Edition" dropdown list in the "Technical parameters" area on the "Editions" tab. To add new entries to this list, click the "..." button next to the list. In Booknizer 8.0, edition titles are also shown in the "Title" column of the list.
  • When you import your collection from Book Collector, you can now provide several XML files:
  • Using plugins, you can easily import your existing book collection from other organizer programs. The new version of the Book Collector import plugin supports import from multiple XML files.
  • A confirmation prompt is displayed, when authors and books are deleted:
  • Previous versions of Booknizer deleted books and authors immediately after you selected the corresponding menu item. Booknizer 8.0 adds a confirmation prompt to ensure that no books / authors are deleted by mistake (for example, if a wrong menu item was clicked). You can disable this prompt on the "General" tab of the "Options" window (F10).
  • Additional images can now be saved as artwork (pictures):
  • When searching for additional images / covers, you can now save any images you find as artwork (pictures). Just select a number of images and click the "Save as artwork" button.
  • On the author's page, book series are sorted by the number in series, and not by the year:
  • Booknizer sorts books in bibliographies by series. Previously such books were sorted by year. This might fail to provide the correct order, if editions other than the very first one were listed. In Booknizer 8.0, book series are sorted by the corresponding numbers, which eliminates this and other possible issues.
  • There are several improvements in how the program handles downloads that are being canceled:
  • If you download information about several books at once and need to cancel download at some point, the new version will do this quicker.
  • Fixed listing books when the "Last updated instead of last added" option is enabled in the interface settings:
  • A bug in the "Orange" interface caused the program to show the same list of books, regardless of the selected tab on the home page, if the "Last updated instead of last added" option was enabled. This problem was fixed in Booknizer 8.0.
  • Fixed downloading books purchased on Litres in the selected format:
  • Booknizer can work with a popular Russian e-book store, Litres. A bug might prevent the program from downloading books in the format selected by the user, downloading a different format instead. This was fixed in Booknizer 8.0.
  • Fixed adding several editions of the same book from files:
  • When in the process of adding e-books from files Booknizer found several editions of the same book (several e-book files with the same book), it might create the corresponding number of editions and link all editions to the same file instead of using the corresponding e-book files. Booknizer 8.0 handles such situations correctly.
  • Fixed other bugs:
  • As usual, Booknizer 8.0 contains other small improvements and bug fixes. Use our support form or forum to report a bug or suggest a new feature!

New in Booknizer 7.2 Build 435 (Oct 4, 2014)

  • Added extended filters for books and authors. Filters can be created from search parameters.:
  • Booknizer includes several pre-defined filters, you can find them in the "Quick filter" menu. Using these filters, you can easily list, for example, all unread books from your library.
  • Booknizer 7.2 extends filtering capabilities. Now it is possible to create new filters with any desired sets of parameters and use them similar to quick filters.
  • Dropdown lists for extended filters can be found at the top of the "Books" and "Authors" tabs. Initially this list is empty. To add an extended filter, click the "..." button next to the list.
  • With the upper plus button you create a new filter, with the lower one you add rules to the currently selected filter. Rules (field and its values) can be adjusted directly in the list.
  • Click "Save" to save and apply the newly created filter.
  • If you search for books on the "Search" tab and realize that the set of parameters that you've just entered can be helpful in the future, click the "Create filter" button to create an extended filter using the specified parameters.
  • Information about all books of any selected item can be downloaded on the "Collection" tab:
  • The "Collection" tab allow sorting books and authors in many ways. You can create your own sorting patterns in the "Customize collection" window. The results can be printed or exported using Reports.
  • Booknizer 7.2 can download information for all books of any selected Collection item. This allows you easily updating information about a certain set of books.
  • On the author's page, books are sorted by book series. Books that do not belong to any series are listed separately:
  • In the Breeze and Modern user interfaces of Booknizer 7.2, book series are listed separately from other books.
  • Now you can save book covers, photos of authors and other images from the program:
  • All sorts of pictures that you see in the program can now be saved. Just click a picture to open it in the built-in image viewer and click the floppy button on the toolbar of the viewer.
  • Alternatively, open the "Pictures" tab of the "Edit info" window for a book / author, right-click a picture and use the "Save the picture" entry.
  • When adding audio books and e-books from files, you can easily select all highlighted files and folders instead of selecting each of them manually:
  • In Booknizer, you can add e-books and audio books from files using the corresponding entries of the "Add book" dialog. Previously, you could check or uncheck individual items (files and folders, including all nested folders), but it was impossible to select a group of items on the same level. Booknizer 7.2 offers a new feature: now a group of files / folders can be highlighted with usual controls (Shift + Click), and then all highlighted items can be checked.
  • It is now possible to create a set of format icons that will be displayed on the book page, depending on the format of the e-book:
  • If you added e-books and/or audio books from files or linked otherwise added books to files, there are links to the corresponding files on the book's page. You can play audio books or read e-books directly from Booknizer.
  • In Booknizer 7.2, the standard book icon can be replaced with icons of the corresponding formats.
  • To create your own set of icons, open the folder where Booknizer is installed (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Booknizer). Open the "Pictures" subfolder and find the "FormatIcons" subfolder inside it. If such folder does not exist, create it.
  • Now save icons of formats into this FormatIcons folder in the PNG format. The filename of an icon should be the name (or rather the filename extension) of the corresponding format. For example, an icon for the EPUB format should have the "epub.png" filename. Booknizer uses 32*32 icons.
  • Newly added icons will be used automatically.
  • Added Orange user interface:
  • The Orange user interface is now available in Booknizer. You can switch to this interface on the "User interface" tab of the settings window.
  • Fixed renaming book series:
  • When you changed the book series field for some book in previous versions of Booknizer, the new series was applied to all books of the series. Thus it was impossible to move an individual book to a different book series, removing it from the previously assigned series. This bug was fixed in Booknizer 7.2.
  • Fixed reading some e-books in the EPUB format:
  • The built-in file scanner of Booknizer could not extract information about some e-book files in the EPUB format and failed to add such books to the list. This was fixed in Booknizer 7.2.
  • Fixed saving book authors extracted from files, if downloading information was enabled and no author was downloaded from the selected internet source:
  • When you add books from files, Booknizer tries to extract as much information as possible. Additionally you can choose to download information from the internet.
  • Previously the program did not save authors, if no information about authors was found in the downloaded information. In this situation Booknizer 7.2 uses authors extracted from book files.
  • Fixed other bugs:
  • There are other improvements and bug fixes in Booknizer 7.2.

New in Booknizer 7.1 Build 415 (Mar 17, 2014)

  • Added custom fields and lists for authors:
  • Custom fields and lists are now available not only for books, but also for authors. With a custom field, you can select one value exclusively. With a custom list, you can use several values at the same time. As an example, we used a custom field as "Sex" (can be "male" or "female" exclusively) and a custom list as "Preferred genres" (can be several ones at the same time).
  • The custom fields tab:
  • Now it is possible to search for books that are not in the collection, on the "Search" tab.
  • The "Search" tab offers additional options. Now you can look for books that are not in your collection.
  • When sorting by author on the "Collection" tab, books without authors are now displayed, too:
  • Previous versions of Booknizer would not show books that weren't associated with any author when sorting by author on the "Collection" tab. Booknizer 7.1 shows a special item, , and puts all books without authors into this item.
  • The "Add book/ Add author" window saves its size and restores it next time you start the program:
  • The adjusted size of the "Add book / Add author" window is now saved between sessions. Making the window bigger is especially helpful if you add audio books or e-books from files.
  • @ is a new variable for the "Collection" tab, it allows sorting books in the order you added them:
  • An additional variable is now available for the "Collection" tab. You can use "@" in the "Customize collection" window to add new sorting formats.
  • Variables for the Collection tab:
  • When you open the "Add book" or "Add author" window, its focus is automatically set to the input field.
  • Previously you needed to click on the input field after opening the "Add book" or "Add author" window, before you could start entering titles or names. Booknizer 7.1 automatically sets the focus to the input field, so you can start typing immediately after opening the window.
  • Width of arrows next to buttons on the toolbar was adjusted:
  • On the toolbar of the program, some buttons are accompanied by arrows. After clicking on such arrow, you can select additional options from a dropdown list. In Booknizer 7.1, width of these arrows was adjusted.
  • Fixed downloading covers for books when adding books from files:
  • If you add books from files (for example, audio books), Booknizer can automatically look up and download book covers from the internet. In Booknizer 7.1, this feature was improved to enable downloading covers which previous versions might fail to download.
  • Fixed saving your state of the "Replace descriptions/biographies when downloading info" option:
  • If you disabled the "Replace descriptions/biographies when downloading info" option on the "Download options" tab, previous versions of Booknizer might fail to save this, which resulted in restoring the default state when you started the program next time. This was fixed in Booknizer 7.1.
  • Fixed other bugs:
  • Booknizer 7.1 includes further small improvements and bug fixes.

New in Booknizer 7.0 Build 400 (Dec 27, 2013)

  • For all owners of Amazon Kindle e-readers, now Booknizer can automatically convert FB2 to MOBI when you copy e-books to your Kindle:
  • You can copy e-books directly from your Booknizer catalog to your reader device. Just connect your reader with your computer and click "Copy books" on the toolbar of Booknizer (this button is not shown, if no device is connected). The program automatically recognizes various devices and displays e-books from your library that are compatible with the corresponding device. Additionally, Booknizer could automatically convert FB2 to EPUB when copying, if the reader did not support FB2 but could read EPUB. Booknizer 7.0 can also convert FB2 to MOBI, the native e-book format of Amazon Kindle
  • FBReader, a program for reading e-books in EPUB, MOBI, FB2, can now be installed with Booknizer:
  • E-books can be opened and read directly on your computer, using a special program. Booknizer 7.0 comes bundled with FBReader, one of the best e-book reader programs. You can choose to install FBReader together with the latest version of Booknizer and associate e-book files with the program. After this, you will be able to open all sorts of e-books directly from Booknizer.
  • Licensing changes. Now a single registration code works for all organizers:
  • Booknizer 7.0 introduces some changes in the licensing policy. Now you can choose between 1-year and lifetime licenses. Furthermore, one license works with 3 organizers: Movienizer (movie organizer), Musicnizer (music organizer) and Booknizer (book organizer). After entering your registration data into any of the programs you can use all of them without limitations.
  • Now it is possible to search for books by contents:
  • "Contents" is one of the pre-defined fields in Booknizer. It may contain the table of contents of the corresponding book. For example, if it's a collection of short stories, the "Contents" field would list titles of all stories. Booknizer 7.0 takes this field into account when searching for a phrase in descriptions. Thus you can enter the title of a short story and find the corresponding collection book.
  • The scrolling position is saved when you use the "Back" and "Forward" buttons:
  • If you scroll down a page and click a link there to view some additional information, you can then click the "Back" button on the toolbar to return to the page. Previous versions of Booknizer, however, would display the page from the top. Booknizer 7.0 will scroll down to the same position that you were at before clicking the link.
  • Size of icons on the main toolbar can be adjusted:
  • Booknizer 7.0 allows adjusting size of icons on the main toolbar. Just right-click the toolbar and select "Big icons" (default), "Medium icons", or "Small icons".
  • Displaying pie charts in the statistics:
  • The statistics window was enhanced in Booknizer 7.0. Now, in addition to bar chart diagrams ("linear"), Booknizer can display pie chart diagrams ("circular"). Display mode can be selected on the "Diagram" tab of the statistics window ("Reports" - "Statistics").
  • Selecting several images on the Pictures tab of the Edit Info window to change their type or remove them.
  • On the "Pictures" tab of the "Edit info" dialog for a book or a person, several pictures can be now selected and processed at once. Use Ctrl + Click to add pictures to selection or remove them. Right-click a selected picture to open the context menu and select actions (change type of the selected pictures or delete them).
  • It is now possible to change order of items on the Collection tab:
  • Booknizer can sort the main list of books (the "Books" tab in the left area of the window) in several pre-defined ways. More sorting methods are available on the "Collection" tab. Here you can also create your own sorting methods.
  • In Booknizer 7.0, you can change order of items by selecting them and using the "Up" and "Down" arrows in the "Collection Items Setup" window ("Manage" - "Customize collection").
  • When you add EPUB books, all translators are now saved into the database:
  • Unlike the previous versions of the program, Booknizer 7.0 saves all translators that are listed in EPUB files. To add EPUB files into the program, use the "Add book" - "From files and folders" method.
  • When you start the program, all scripts are checked for updates. Missing scripts are downloaded:
  • Booknizer uses scripts to download information about books (cover, synopsis, other details) and authors (bibliography, biography, photos, etc.) from the internet. Scripts need to be updated in order to download correct information, as the format in which online databases serve their data changes. When you start Booknizer 7.0, it checks for all script updates and downloads new scripts (if available). Previous versions of the program checked updates only for the pair of script that was active at the moment, which could lead to using outdated scripts if you switched to a different script during a session.
  • Fixed synchronization with e-book reader devices:
  • Booknizer 7.0 updates its synchronization engine to improve compatibility with various e-book reader devices (e-readers).
  • Fixed converting some FB2 to EPUB:
  • There is a built-in converter that allows converting FB2 to EPUB when you copy your e-books to an e-reader that does not support FB2. This converter was improved in Booknizer 7.0 to take into account some special variants of FB2.
  • Fixed opening books from a custom field other than 1:
  • There was a bug that prevented you from opening books from custom fields 2, 3, 4. This bug was fixed in Booknizer 7.0.
  • Fixed other small bugs:
  • There are other small improvements and bug fixes in Booknizer 7.0. Please contact us using the support form or our forum, if you have any questions, suggestions, or want to report a bug.
