New in Box Sync 4.0.4179 (Jan 16, 2014)

  • Syncing 100,000 Files:
  • Box Sync 4.0 does not limit the number of files and folders that can be synced at any given time. Box has successfully tested and synced 100,000 files in various scenarios.
  • Improved Overall Performance:
  • Box Sync 4.0 uses an “always watching” strategy to report any changes that occurred in Box or on your computer. This strategy now allows Box Sync to receive notifications on each file that changed in either system, thus providing quicker and accurate reports. This change allows Box Sync 4.0 to deliver better performance, particularly when syncing a large number of files.
  • In comparison, Box Sync 3.x scanned each system first and then repeated the process even if only one file was changed in either system thus making it a time-consuming process.
  • Improved CPU Usage:
  • Box Sync 4.0 consumes 25% less CPU than our earlier versions. While this improvement is significant, we anticipate improving it even further with each release.
  • Root-Level File Syncing:
  • Box Sync 4.0 allows you to directly sync files in the Box Sync folder.
  • In Sync 3.x, this action creates a separate "Default Sync Folder" and the synced file is moved to that folder.
  • In Sync 4.0, the file is synced in the Box Sync folder itself. When you sync a file that resides in a nested folder, you also see the file being synced in each parent folder connected to this file.
  • In Sync 3.x, this kind of syncing is not possible.
  • Right-Click Menus:
  • In both Windows Sync and Mac Sync, you can right-click any file or folder to share a file or view it on Box. If you Share a file, the corresponding link for that file is copied to your clipboard. You can paste this link into any other application. If you select View on Box, the file is opened in your default browser. You can then comment, assign tasks, view the version history, or lock/unlock the file.
  • Notifications when Files Cannot Sync:
  • If an item cannot be synced, Box Sync 4.0 immediately displays a notification on your local system along with the name of the problem item.
  • Click the Box Sync desktop icon (the b icon) to obtain additional details on the problem item.
  • See What Do Problem File Notifications in Sync 4 Mean? for solutions or workarounds to fix a problem. Once you fix the problem, the item will be synced automatically.
  • Unsync on Delete:
  • You can delete an unwanted folder from your local system. Deleting a folder in your local system does not delete the same folder on Box; it will merely unsync the folder, remove it from your local system, and keep it saved on Box. If your intention is to delete this folder in both locations, you need to explicitly delete the required folder on Box. This behavior protects content from unintentional and accidental deletions.
  • This behavior only applies to folders. If you delete a file in your local system, you will be automatically deleting it from Box as well.

New in Box Sync 3.4.25.0 (Jul 11, 2013)

  • New file creation following a delete:
  • If a file was deleted in Box and another file with the same name is created at a later time, you might have seen unpredictable behavior in earlier versions of Box Sync. In the latest Box Sync version, you can download and sync the new file without any issues.
  • Cryptic error message for locked accounts:
  • Some enterprise accounts require users to accept the Terms of Service agreement before installing their services. In earlier versions of Box Sync, you may have received a generic error message if you tried using Box Sync before accepting the Terms of Service (when you try to login). The new version of this error message is more descriptive and states the reason for locking out users.
  • Multiple versions of Python installations:
  • Developers who use Python for other development tasks may have a different version of Python installed in their system. Sometimes, this Python version caused a conflict with the Python version used by Box Sync. This latest version of Box Sync allows both Python versions to coexist without causing conflicts.
  • User names with foreign characters:
  • Earlier versions of Box Sync disallowed foreign characters in the user name if the user logged in from any Windows computer. This issue is now fixed and users can continue to use foreign characters in their user name when logging in from Windows computers as well.
  • Cut and paste in Windows VMs:
  • In earlier version of Box Sync, the cut-and-paste function did not work if Box Sync was installed in a Windows virtual machine. This issue has now been fixed and you can continue to use cut-and-paste in the Box Sync directory in the Windows VM environment as well.
  • Incorrect icon shown for some files:
  • In rare cases a file displays incorrect Box Sync progress icons. We have not completely fixed this issue in this version of Box Sync. However, we now display the correct icons in most cases.
