  • Improvements:
  • Cliqz got updated to Firefox 73.0.1 with various improvements and fixes.

New in CLIQZ 1.30.0 (Nov 15, 2019)

  • New Features:
  • Browse undisturbed at last: Thanks to the new Cookie Pop-up Blocker, websites no longer bother you with cookie consent notices. Once activated, consent requests for data collection are automatically denied if possible. Otherwise, the cookie pop-up is simply hidden.
  • Improvements:
  • Cliqz got updated to Firefox 70.0.1 with various improvements and fixes.
  • Thanks to code optimizations, the Cliqz Browser now starts up to 20% faster (with an existing profile).
  • Cliqz now displays websites opened in Forget Mode in a separate browser window. Therefore, normal and private tabs are more strictly separated. This makes it easier for you to differentiate between them, and further strengthens your privacy. Forget Tabs are no longer supported.
  • The completely redesigned Onboarding makes the initial setup of the Cliqz Browser easier by guiding you step-by-step through the most important settings.
  • Fixes:
  • Various bugs with themes have been fixed.
  • Instead of Firefox’s built-in tracking protection, the Cliqz Browser uses our superior anti-tracking technology.
  • Cliqz continues to use the built-in password manager instead of Firefox Lockwise to manage login data and passwords.

  • We brought back Cliqz Tab in Forget mode. Now all users can enjoy different backgrounds, favorites, and news on every new tab.

New in CLIQZ 1.26.0 (Apr 5, 2019)

  • New features:
  • Use your favorite add-ons in your Cliqz Browser! But keep in mind that extensions can also pose risks and slow down your browser. For more transparency, Cliqz now shows you all the permissions that installed add-ons require. This way you can see immediately which settings and data they are allowed to access. Learn more in our blog.
  • After a major update of the Cliqz Browser, a “What’s new” page opens automatically to inform you briefly about the most important changes. This will keep you up to date with the latest features and improvements. The page only appears when there are really significant feature updates.
  • Improvements:
  • Cliqz got updated to Firefox 66.0.2 which brings various improvements and fixes.
  • The dark browser theme is pleasant for your eyes – and it looks awesome! We added a possibility to easily switch between the light and dark theme in the Cliqz Tab settings. How this works is explained in a blog post.
  • We’ve updated the algorithm behind the “Time saved” statistic on Cliqz Tab. In addition to the time you save by using the built-in ad blocker, it now also takes into account the time you save by using Cliqz Quick Search.
  • Fixes:
  • In some cases an empty page was opened in the browser after a restart. This bug has been fixed.
  • We fixed the issue that the temperature unit preference for the Weather Smart Cliqz was not being saved.

New in CLIQZ 1.25.2 (Feb 26, 2019)

  • New features:
  • We added a new notification box on Cliqz Tab to keep our users up-to-date on news related to the Cliqz browser or to talk about other important matters, like asking for their opinions: the survey we ran in the past weeks got thousands of responses! Thank you! We will carefully analyse the feedback and use it to further improve Cliqz. The notification box only appears when there’s something to say.
  • Improvements:
  • Cliqz got updated to Firefox 65.0.1 which brings various improvements and fixes.
  • Light and dark Cliqz browser themes have been polished: we’ve fixed many small issues across the themes. It’s like with every good face-lift: if you don’t notice anything but you enjoy looking at it, it worked.
  • Looking for current flight information? The Flight Status Smart Cliqz (shown to users who type “flight” plus a flight number into the URL bar, e.g. “flight LH 773”) now shows the respective time zones for departure and arrival locations.
  • Fixes:
  • We fixed the issue of users’ cookie management preferences (set in the Options menu) not being saved after browser restart.
  • For some of our users the keyboard combination Ctrl+Shift+T that restores the last closed tab did not work. This has been fixed.
  • In the About Cliqz window, missing links in the German version of the browser are in place again.
  • On Cliqz Tab the “Time Saved” statistic got reset to zero after some time in specific cases. This has been corrected.
  • Several reported cases in which the ad-blocking function blocked other content on websites were fixed.
  • Several small issues were fixed for the Cliqz Offers module, including an issue where an offer could not be removed reliably.

  • Improvements:
  • Update to Firefox 64.0.
  • Multiple improvements and added coverage for our ad-blocking functionality.
  • New features:
  • Cliqz now allows add-ons. Just before Christmas, one of the most frequent requests from our users becomes a reality: Cliqz Browser for Windows and Mac now supports extensions from the Firefox Add-ons Store. Enjoy the new variety of available functions, but always keep in mind that adding third-party extensions to your browser can be associated with certain risks.
  • Read more about how to install extensions in Cliqz and the potential damage add-ons can cause.
  • Added privacy statistics on Cliqz Tab. These stats provide an easy overview of the amount of personal data that have been hidden from trackers for you since you’ve been browsing with Cliqz. In addition, you see the total number of blocked ads and the time saved due to faster page loads.
  • Fixes:
  • Windows users can now import passwords from their Firefox built-in password manager into the Cliqz one. (Note: possibility to import the passwords protected by the master password is currently limited).
  • Multiple fixes to the Cliqz Offers module
  • Fixes for various enriched search results in the quick search
  • Users of the German version of the browser were not able to use the search engine Qwant for specific queries directly from the Cliqz URL bar. This has been fixed.
  • Some of our users experienced issues with a broken context menu. We apologize for the inconvenience and are happy to report that this issue has been fixed.

New in CLIQZ 1.22.0 (Sep 24, 2018)

  • Improvements:
  • Update to Firefox 62.0.
  • Cliqz Search can now be selected as an alternative search engine. This can be done from the Search menu of the Preferences or from the Search options in the Cliqz Control Center (Q icon next to the URL bar).
  • To make sure you can easily set up your homepage and define the actions that happen after browser startup, we have introduced a few changes to the General menu of Preferences.
  • New features:
  • We have integrated the open source tool “re:consent” into the Cliqz Browser. It leads you directly to the often well-hidden or deliberately confusing or unnecessarily complex privacy settings (e.g. on Google or Facebook). This allows you to quickly and easily check and change your consent for data processing, e.g. location sharing, face recognition or cookie tracking.

New in CLIQZ 1.21.2 (Aug 8, 2018)

  • If you used the 32-bit version of Cliqz for Windows so far, we will automatically migrate your browser to the 64-bit version with the latest update. Check the benefits and prerequisites in our blog post.

New in CLIQZ 1.18.0 (Feb 15, 2018)

  • New:
  • Firefox update to 58.0.2. This update further optimizes the browser performance by improving the way graphics are rendered and JavaScript is cached. With an update to version 58, Mozilla has again closed multiple vulnerabilities in Firefox, including some that are classified as critical by Mozilla. For safety reasons, an update to Cliqz 1.18.0, based on Firefox version 58.0.2, is strongly recommended for all users.
  • Please find more details about Firefox version 58 in the Firefox Release Notes.
  • 64-bit browser version for Windows. We’re happy to announce that the Cliqz browser is now available in both a 32- and 64-bit version. When downloading from our website, the recommended browser version (based on operating system version and RAM) will be installed automatically. Users also have the option to manually select the version they wish to install. Existing users don’t need to re-install Cliqz – an automatic update to the recommended version will make sure their browser is stable and secure. Please find more details about this major enhancement in our blog.
  • News: German Media translated to English. English speakers can now choose to have German news headlines translated to English on their Cliqz Tab. This option can be activated in the Cliqz Tab settings menu.
  • Improved:
  • Browser Performance. We constantly work on speed and stability improvements for Cliqz. This update introduces a list of changes enabling your browser to start and work faster.
  • Search Performance. Cliqz search, built into the browser to deliver the top results to you instantly while not leaking your private data, has been updated. It now performs at a higher speed thanks to a major optimization of our search backend.
  • Last query function. While searching the Internet via the address bar, Cliqz often keeps the last query you typed right inside the address bar. This allows you to return to your most recent search with just one click onto the query instead of having to re-type it. With this update, we’ve improved the “last query” function by optimizing its behaviour and fixing related bugs.
  • Complementary Search Engine Qwant. We’ve added Qwant to the list of complementary search engines available in the Cliqz browser. To make Qwant a default complementary search engine, users can now select it from the list of search engines in Preferences.
  • MyOffrz Design. With this release, we’ve given MyOffrz interfaces a visual touch-up.

New in CLIQZ 1.16.0 (Oct 20, 2017)

  • What is new:
  • Cliqz Blue Theme and New Background Picture. If you’d like to add a little more color to your browsing experience, you now have the option to make the tab bar blue. This also adds contrast as the active tab is highlighted in white. A mountain panorama of the Alps as background picture on new tabs completes the new colorful look. Both new features are activated by default to bring them to our users’ attention, unless you have previously set a different background image. Of course, you can change the color of the tab bar and the background image at any time in the Cliqz Tab settings menu. Learn more about the Cliqz Tab settings.
  • French Media News. French speakers can now choose to have French news on their Cliqz Tab. This option can be activated in the Cliqz Tab settings menu.
  • Search Dropdown: Link to more related Results in Browser History. Searching for something and want to see all the related results in your browser history? This is even easier now: a link ‘Show results found in history’ takes you to the full history results, pre-filtered by all elements that match the query.
  • What is better:
  • Update to Firefox 56.0.1. The Firefox updates to versions 56.0 and 56.0.1 add a list of fixes and improvements to Cliqz. Among other changes, there is an updated Preferences menu:
  • Added search tool so users can find a specific setting quickly
  • Reorganized preferences so users can more easily scan settings
  • Rewrote descriptions so users can better understand choices and how they affect browsing
  • Revised data collection choices
  • History Interface. We continue working on our History interface (accessible from Cliqz Tab) to add stability and multiple further improvements.
  • Video Downloader Button is moved inside the URL Bar. In the Cliqz browser, you can download videos from YouTube.com to your computer or send them to your mobile device. To help you find the Video Downloader button more easily, we moved it into the URL bar. It will appear there once a YouTube video page is opened. As before, clicking on the button will show you the download formats available for the respective video and the possibility to send the video to your mobile. Learn more about this feature.
  • What is fixed:
  • macOS High Sierra Issues. Users who updated to macOS 10.13 High Sierra experienced UI issues in the Cliqz Browser. For example, Title Bar buttons (close, zoom and maximize buttons) were missing in the browser. This has been fixed.
  • Missing Complementary Search Engines. Some of the default complementary search engines were no longer available for some users after the previous update. This has been fixed. The missing search engines should appear in the list and be available for the users again.
  • Text on the pinned Tabs. Your pinned tabs look neat and tidy again – we removed the text that was shown next to the favicon on the pinned tab.
  • Close Button on the opened Tabs. The close button was disappearing from the opened inactive tabs when there was still enough space to show it. This forced users to activate a tab first in order to close it. This has been fixed.

New in CLIQZ 1.15.1 (Sep 14, 2017)

  • Soccer Smart Cliqz. Good news for all soccer fans! For the beginning of the Bundesliga season 2017/18, Cliqz released a new Smart Cliqz for Soccer, which gives you instant live results for the ongoing matches and the results of the past games. Give it a try: type ‘Bundesliga’ in Cliqz Search to get the results table for all the matches, or enter a name of your favorite team to instantly see their results.
  • What is better:
  • Update to Firefox 55.0.3. The new Firefox update adds several performance and security improvements to Cliqz. For example, multi-process architecture, also known as Electrolysis, was changed to include multiple web-content processes. This was enabled in Cliqz as a default to ensure faster page loading and more responsive tab switching. For the fine-tuning of your browser performance, you can now adjust the number of processes up or down. This setting is at the bottom of the General section in Options (Learn more).
  • Cliqz Control Center. With this release, our Control Center got a new color and structure. But even with the new look and feel, the Control Center still gives you quick and easy access to all your privacy settings, search and history options.
  • Last query function. While searching the Internet via the address bar, Cliqz often keeps the last query you typed right inside the address bar. This allows you to return to your most recent search with just one click onto the query instead of having to re-type it. This “last query” function now has a new design and we’ll continue improving it.
  • LastPass Update. We updated LastPass, the integrated password management application, to version 4.1.62a.
  • HTTPS Everywhere Update. For single websites content was blocked by or displayed incorrectly due to the integrated HTTPS Everywhere function. We updated the function to version 2017.8.19, which resolved a list of known issues.
  • What is fixed:
  • Queries typed in Forget Mode are shown in History. If users typed a query in a Forget tab or window, the query was shown in the History interface that can be accessed via the history icon on Cliqz Tab. This was resolved.
  • Our friends at Firefox will roll out a few great changes soon and we will follow suit. Stay tuned and enjoy browsing with Cliqz.

New in CLIQZ 1.14.0 (Jun 28, 2017)

  • Cliqz GmbH has released a new version of the Cliqz browser for Windows and Mac OS, with the aim of making it easier to find and retrieve websites and information. The most noteworthy update is the new design of its integrated quick search engine. Furthermore, there is now a completely new concept of the browser history. You can download Cliqz 1.14.0 for Windows and Mac OS for free at the following link: https://cliqz.com/download.
  • Cliqz has also given its website, logo as well as Android and iPhone app icons a fresh new look.
  • Everything at a glance, everything with a click
  • The core feature of the Cliqz browser is its quick search. It shows website suggestions and cards with immediate information in a menu below the browser bar in real time as you type your keywords or web addresses. This has now been made even clearer. The wider menu makes room for detailed descriptions and more images.
  • Cliqz users can thereby soak in more information at a glance, can choose the most relevant website suggestion with greater speed and can then, without having to make the otherwise common detours through separate search results, arrive at their target designation with just one click. The browser extension Cliqz for Firefox is also getting a new design.
  • The new design of Cliqz quick search: more information at a glance.
  • New browser history:
  • Many Internet users know this problem: they want to find a site that they viewed a while back. But they can’t remember the name of the website. Instead, they vaguely remember the path or the search that led them there. The new Cliqz browser history intelligently groups related entries within the history into sections and makes them therefore easily searchable. The new full-image view enhances users’ ability to maintain a clear overview. Previous browsing paths are very intuitively retrieved and websites that were once visited can now be found again with much greater speed. The browser history can be opened through the browser menu as usual or through the clock symbol at the top left on the “New Tab” page.
  • The new Cliqz browser history allows users to retrieve sites intuitively.
  • Fresh look:
  • In parallel with the new desktop browser, Cliqz has also released new versions of the company website, the logo and the icons for the Android and iPhone apps. Everything now radiates an iridescent blue.

New in CLIQZ 1.13.0 (Jun 28, 2017)

  • The latest version of Cliqz for Desktop shines in an all new design. We developed a new search UI in collaboration with our investor Mozilla. It provides an even better overview of the results – in form of a dropdown right below the URL bar, as accustomed by Cliqz. The redesign, above all, was based on the feedback we received from our users. For example, some users mentioned that the presentation of results was wasting space. That is why we made the search dropdown more compact. It now displays results, additional deep links, images and other information without forcing the user to scroll.
  • At the top of the dropdown, you will find a new element that allows searching with a supplementary search engine of your choice. When typing a search query, simply press Enter to use the search engine you selected instead of Cliqz’s quick search. You can specify which supplementary search engine is used by default in the Control Center (Q menu to the right of the URL bar) under “More search options”. The default setting is Google.
  • Existing history entries are still shown above the actual search results, however displayed in a clustered form for a better overview. Website icons have moved from the right to the left side of the result. This allows you to easier identify the shown websites without even having to look at the name.
  • New Cliqz UI history
  • For more than 1000 results, our quick search provides automatically generated deep links for a given domain. You can easily select the links from the dropdown. This will bring you faster to your desired result. This works, among others, for news websites or Wikipedia pages. For the former, quick search displays the three most trending news articles. Wikipedia results further display matching images.
  • New Cliqz UI Trump:
  • The visually revised Smart Cliqz fit seamlessly into the new design. For example, you can display the weather forecast for the next five days by simply entering “weather” plus a city name. The built-in calculator, currency converter and unit converter also show instant results in the dropdown without having to make a detour to a separate result page. Entirely new is the Smart Cliqz for lottery numbers. Check if your numbers are a winner faster than ever before.
  • Some previously available Smart Cliqz have yet to be adapted to the new design. This includes local results (with additional information such as address, telephone number, map data, opening times and ratings), local time of a city, flight status information and direct YouTube search using the prefix #yt. These will follow soon. In addition, new Smart Cliqz are planned, including one for movie information.
  • Apart from the design, we also improved the code of Cliqz for Windows and Mac. These tweaks enhance the overall stability of the browser. Try it out and share your opinion about the changes by simply dropping us a line on Facebook. We are looking forward to your feedback!

New in CLIQZ 1.12.1 (Apr 13, 2017)

  • What is new:
  • Connect Cliqz for Desktop with Cliqz on your mobile device. The latest Cliqz function, called “Connect”, enables users to connect Cliqz on their Android tablet or smartphone to the Cliqz desktop application. Once paired, users can send websites from their computer to their mobile device, or download videos onto their mobile via the desktop browser. Connect works without a user account and without sending data through an external server. Connect will be rolled out to users gradually within the next weeks.
  • What is better:
  • Update to Firefox 52.0.2. The new Firefox updates add several performance and security improvements to Cliqz. In addition, a little icon now appears in the URL bar to alert users when they visit unencrypted websites that offer a login.
  • LastPass Update. We updated LastPass, the integrated password management application, to version 4.1.45.
  • Cliqz Tab in Forget Windows. For all new tabs in Forget windows, Cliqz Tab is now displayed. Only the start page of the Forget window provides brief information about this browser mode.
  • Stability improvements. We implemented many stability improvements for different components in Cliqz. As a side effect some performance enhancements were achieved. The code cleanup also helped us prepare for the upcoming new features.
  • Weather Smart Cliqz. For weather alerts in the Smart Cliqz, the yellow alert box used to hide the city name. We rearranged the contents slightly to show the location for every type of weather.
  • Detailed versioning. „About Cliqz“ now displays an expanded version number for the browser to facilitate error reports and debugging. The figure consists of three parts: the browser version, e.g. 1.12.0, followed by the current Firefox version, e.g. 52.0.2, and the extended component that contains proprietary Cliqz features like its search and anti-tracking, e.g. 1.15.0. Put together it looks like this: CLIQZ – 1.12.1 (52.0.2+1.15.0).
  • Smart Cliqz categories. In some Smart Cliqz (i.e. enriched search results) category buttons are cut off due to their long titles. We added a tooltip that displays the full name on hover.
  • What is fixed:
  • Empty search dropdown. For some users typing into text boxes on websites opened a blank dropdown from the address bar. This issue has been fixed.
  • Privacy settings saved. If users switched the browser’s privacy settings for saving history, these changes were lost when the browser was restarted. This has been resolved.
  • Google.de search shortcut. Clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the “Google.de” Top Site on Freshtab opened the search shortcut #gi for Google Images. This has been corrected to show #go as the shortcut to search on Google.
  • Video downloader message on Cliqz Tab. In a specific case the notification for the new video download feature on Cliqz Tab appeared twice.
  • HTTPS Everywhere corrections. Several cases in which the security add-on HTTPS Everywhere blocked website content have been identified and fixed. Among others, live streaming of some TV programs had been affected.
  • Ad-block enhancements. For single websites content was blocked by or displayed incorrectly due to the integrated ad-blocking function. We fixed the known cases.
  • The second phase of the Cliqz Test Pilot experiment by Mozilla is coming to an end. We hope to turn key insights from the test into product improvements for future releases.

New in CLIQZ 1.11.0 (Feb 8, 2017)

  • NEW:
  • Multi-process architecture enabled. We are releasing the new multi-process architecture, also known as Electrolysis, to all Cliqz desktop browsers. Available by default, this major modification divides the user interface and the web content into separate processes. The benefits of this architectural change are better stability and performance. Learn more in our News.
  • Email-Notifications on Cliqz Tab. Gmail users can now choose to be notified about new emails on Cliqz Tab. This feature is available, if mail.google.com is among your most visited or favorite websites on Cliqz Tab and if you are logged into your Gmail account. To enable or disable notifications, right-click on the Gmail tile on Cliqz Tab to open the context menu and select the appropriate option.
  • Accelerated Cliqz for Windows installation. For Windows users the download and installation of the Cliqz browser via our website has just become much faster. The new “Mini-Installer” comes with a reduced file size but delivers the full functionality.
  • IMPROVED:
  • Address bar title. When launching the browser the start page URL was displayed as “about:cliqz”. We fixed this to show the usual title “Search or enter address” again.
  • Turning off anti-tracking and ad-blocking. When turning the anti-tracking or ad-blocking function in the Control Center off and on multiple times, the browser remembered the “OFF for all websites” setting and did not show “OFF for this page” as a default. This has been corrected.
  • Automatic Forget Mode. We improved the Automatic Forget Mode functionality for various cases and made it work for the multi-process architecture, too. This function switches the current tab to Forget Mode automatically, when the most popular adult sites are visited. As a result, these websites will not be saved to the browser history.
  • Data import from Firefox. Since version 1.9.0, data from Firefox like bookmarks or history can be imported into Cliqz without having to use the HTML import function. This process was further improved.
  • FIXED:
  • Anti-tracking color code. When turning the anti-tracking function off and on multiple times, the wrong color was shown in the Control Center. This was fixed. Now green indicates active tracking protection, yellow is visible if only the current page is not protected and if anti-tracking is disabled completely, the icon and Control Center will show a red signal.
  • Websites not displayed correctly. The integrated function HTTPS Everywhere requests encrypted connections to websites where possible and thus increases security. However, it blocks content from being displayed correctly on websites sometimes. We fixed a few cases that were reported to us, among others on kicker.de and on Google Images.
  • Ad-blocking. We fixed a number of issues in the ad-blocking function. For example, on selected pages advertisements continued to be blocked even if the function was disabled. In addition, in specific cases links got blocked that were not advertisements.
  • Top Sites on Cliqz Tab. We fixed an issue where the logos of Top Site tiles on the start and new tab page were not displayed correctly.

New in CLIQZ 1.8.0 (Nov 7, 2016)

  • NEW:
  • Duplicate Tab. We received multiple user messages requesting a function to easily open the same website again in a new tab. This feature has been added now: right-click on any open tab to open the tab menu and select “Duplicate tab”. This will create a copy of the respective website.
  • A new Welcome. New users of the Cliqz browser and the extension Cliqz for Firefox are now shown a new introduction. It briefly highlights the Control Center and Cliqz’ search.
  • Complimentary search engines in the Control Center. Open the Search Options section in the Control Center to quickly select an alternate search engine to compliment the Cliqz quick-search.
  • Added search engine Startpage. The web search provider “Startpage” has been added to the list of complimentary search engines. When searching via the URL bar, you can now type “#st” + a search term to go straight to the Startpage results page for this query.
  • Firefox 49.0.2. Firefox’ latest version has been merged with Cliqz. This minor update brings several bug fixes and security updates to the browser.
  • Control Center tool tips. Our features are intended to be intuitive to use for the most part. However, sometimes short descriptions don’t hurt. We added tool tips to the Control Center for “Share location” and “Automatic Forget Tabs”. You can also learn more about the benefits of sharing your location in a related article.
  • IMPROVED:
  • Blocked advertisements count. Clicking on the Ad-Block [Beta] box reveals further details on the number of ads that were removed and the companies behind them. The large figure in the lower right corner now reflects the total sum of these advertisements.
  • More advertisements blocked. We added further cases of online advertising to our ad-block technology. As a result, even more advertisements should be removed from websites.
  • Quicker warm up. The ad-block module was optimized to launch faster on browser start.
  • No Forget Mode notification on Cliqz Tab. If you switch the Cliqz Tab, i.e. a new tab, to Forget Mode, you will not get prompted regarding the removal of data associated with this page. Cliqz Tab is a browser internal page and therefore does not appear in your history or store local data anyway, so this notification is not needed and has been removed. You can switch an open tab into Forget Mode by right-clicking on the tab and selecting “Reload in Forget Mode” or “Always load Website in Forget Mode”.
  • FIXED:
  • Search for videos. When searching for particular videos on Youtube with the Cliqz search (for example by typing “Youtube Coldplay”) no preview images were shown in the results dropdown. This issue has been fixed.
  • Give us feedback. The Cliqz Team likes getting messages and feedback from our users. There are many ways to get in touch with us. Among others you can right-click on any search result in the drop down of the address bar to open a little menu that includes the link “Feedback for Cliqz”. Click on it to go straight to the Cliqz Support Portal where you will find our contact information, frequently asked questions and answers and a contact form. Why do we mention this in the “fixed” section? Well, the link was broken for a short period of time but it is working properly again.
  • My Top Hits. The right corner of the address bar contains a little grey arrow that’s easily overlooked. Clicking on this icon will open a dropdown with your most visited websites called your Top Hits. This list of shortcuts was not working correctly in a few cases and has been fixed.
  • Playing videos. Ad-block prevented certain videos from playing. We fixed the cases reported to us.
  • Move Forget Tab to a new window. When moving a Forget Tab from a normal window to a new window, this tab lost its Forget Mode. We fixed this issue, so that it now remains in Forget Mode.
  • Twitter quick-search. Twitter was missing in the list of complimentary search engines in the German version of Cliqz. In addition it was not possible to use the search short cut “#tw + search term”. Both issues were corrected.
  • The new version will be rolled out to all users gradually over the next weeks.
  • We hope you enjoy browsing the web with Cliqz. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

New in CLIQZ 1.7.0 (Oct 13, 2016)

  • This new update introduces multiple major enhancements: the new Control Center for privacy, security and search functions, a new browser interface design and logos, breaking news, enhanced local search results, and more.
  • What is new?
  • New Browser Design. Cliqz’ browser bars and icons got a face lift. Among others, the search and address bar was increased and new feature icons were introduced. Our designers stay on a trajectory toward a clean user interface.
  • Your New Control Center. The little Cliqz Q-menu and the Anti-Tracking shield in the browser bar will merge into one great tool: the new Control Center. It will offer information on blocked trackers and advertisements. It’s your dashboard to manage settings for privacy, security, and search features. We started releasing the Control Center to small user groups, and will roll it out to all users step by step within the next weeks.
  • Breaking News. Keeping up with the latest and really important news becomes easier with Cliqz. Our editors send breaking news to your Cliqz Tab instantly. We won’t interrupt the program for you, but are adding a label to these news on the Cliqz Tab so you can recognize them easily.
  • New Direct Downloads. Looking for a specific software to install? Cliqz search now provides direct links to download portals, if you type the name of a popular software, like OpenOffice or Free-You-Tube-to-MP3-Converter, into the search bar.
  • New Browser Logo. The Cliqz browser logo has a new look featuring the new official Cliqz color.
  • Firefox 49 Update. This new Firefox version adds multiple enhancements to Cliqz, including new and improved settings for read mode and performance optimizations. Learn more in the Mozilla Release Notes.
  • Cliqz for Linux Update. Linux users have been waiting for an update which finally was released. We stabilized out Linux build process, too, so that future releases can be launched more reliably.
  • Reset Complementary Search Engines. In the browser settings menu the tab “Search” provides a list of alternate search engines. Until now, single services could be removed from the list, but could not be added back. This has been fixed by adding a function to reset the default search engines.
  • Refresh Cliqz. The page about:support displays local browser information for debugging purposes. We added a function to reset Cliqz to its default settings.
  • What is improved?
  • Improved Search Result when Shared Location is activated. Users who choose „Always“ share location in „Safe Quick-Search“ in the Control-Center now get better, richer search results. Of course our users’ local information will never be stored or shared by Cliqz. This search enhancement comes without a privacy-price tag.
  • Block Advertisements. We received a great amount of feedback regarding our ad blocking function within the last weeks. Thanks! It helped us identify and solve issues and implement enhancements. The feature continues to be in beta but we are making good progress toward a stable version.
  • Anti-Tracking. Several cases were fixed in which our tracking protection technology blocked data too ambitiously causing website content to break. We continue to implement enhancements and find new smart approaches to deal with the irregularities and different practices on the Internet.
  • HTTPS Everywhere and Last Pass Updates. We updated the two third-party extensions that are available for Cliqz to their current versions. HTTPS Everywhere is enabled by default and requests encrypted HTTPS connections. Last Pass is a password manager that can be downloaded via the Security tab in the settings menu.
  • What is fixed?
  • Anti-Phishing. We found technical issues in our Anti-Phishing feature that identifies and blocks deceptive websites, also called phishing websites. These issues have been fixed. Anti-Phishing is currently enabled for only a fraction of our users while we go through last quality tests. It will be available again for all users within the next days. Learn more about Anti-Phishing.
  • Welcome to Cliqz. Turns out some new Cliqz users started off without seeing our introduction. Thus they did not get the proper welcome they deserve. Users who do see the intro which contains brief information on key features have offered positive feedback, so we made sure to enable it for all first-time users.
  • Forget Mode. While browsing in a Forget window or Forget tab, visited websites are not stored in the history. That means, the browser “forgets” about these visits instantly. You know you are in Forget mode, if the address bar has a gray background. It was reported that in some rare cases the background color did not turn gray while in Forget mode. This issue has been fixed.
  • Automatic Update Notifications without Available Update. Many Linux users were prompted to update the Cliqz browser although no update was available. This issue was resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience.
  • We hope you enjoy browsing the web with Cliqz. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

New in CLIQZ 1.6.0 (Aug 22, 2016)

  • CLIQZ 1.6.0 comes with an update to the new 48.0 version of Firefox and includes multiple enhancements. In addition, we silently launched our first ad blocking function. It's still in BETA, but it already speeds up load times and cleans up interfaces on many websites.
  • NEW:
  • Update to Firefox 48.0. The latest Firefox version introduces several enhancements to CLIQZ, too, including improved WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) functions, security and stability updates.
  • Ad-free browsing. CLIQZ now offers an integrated advertisement blocker. The function is still in early BETA and has to be enabled. To do so, open the Q-Menu in the top right corner of the browser window, go to “Block Advertisements” and select “All” or “Fair”. Both options currently block all ads, but we are working on a reasonable definition of a fair mode. If you have any ideas or comments regarding “fair” ad blocking, please contact us.
  • Automatic Forget Tabs. We rolled out our Automatic Forget Tabs function to all browser users for easier browsing without traces.. Before a website opens, CLIQZ checks if it is known to contain adult content. If so, the page is automatically opened in a forget tab and it won’t be saved to the browser history. You can also use the function manually via the tab menu (right-click on the tab).
  • FIXED:
  • Error causing browser to crash. Some users experienced browser crashes or were not able to even launch the browser due to a rather complex issue both in CLIQZ and in Firefox code. This issue has been resolved.
  • Location information for search results not shown. In a certain case where users had the option to “always ask” for permission to share the location enabled, the location information was not displayed. We fixed this issue.

New in CLIQZ 1.5.0 (Jul 25, 2016)

  • NEW:
  • Automatic Forget Mode. Privacy conscious browsing just got a little more convenient thanks to CLIQZ’s unique automatic function: if a user navigates to a website with adult content, the tab will automatically reload in Forget Mode and remove all information about this page visit in the browsing history. The Automatic Forget Mode can also be used for other websites. Find out how it works.
  • Fußball smart CLIQZ. All Fußball fans know it: the German Bundesliga is about to start. The new Bundesliga smart CLIQZ will offer instant information on current games and scores, if you search for “Bundesliga” for example.
  • FIXED:
  • Watch videos on Netflix. Changes in the encryption methods for DRM – Digital Rights Management – content prevented videos on Netflix to play in CLIQZ. Get some popcorn and make yourself comfortable – videos are working again.
  • German News on the CLIQZ Start Page For a short period of time, news were displayed in the wrong language for some users. Thanks to everyone who reported the issue and thus helped us solve the issue.
  • Content blocked by Anti-Tracking. On single web pages, embedded videos could not be played or logins did not work, because Anti-Tracking erroneously blocked these functions. This issue was fixed. However, tracking protection is a complex business, so we continuously work on fixing any special cases we come across.
  • Pinned Tabs in Windows. Did you know you could „pin“ tabs to your browser window which will keep them open continuously? Right-click on a tab and select „Pin tab“ from the menu. On Windows computers, pinning multiple tabs caused the interface layout to break. This was fixed.
  • YouTube Video Unblocker. For single blocked videos on YouTube our unblocker did not work, but we found the issue and fixed it.
  • Full Screen Mode. On Windows computers full screen mode did not behave as expected, so we made improvements.
  • Redundant Close Icon on Tabs in Windows. On some Windows machines users suddenly saw two close icons. We removed the extra “x”.
  • CLIQZ-Search we enhanced auto-completion for search queries, local search results and improved stabilization.
  • IMRPOVED:
  • LastPass Password Management. Minor visual corrections were applied to the interface you see when you create a new account for LastPass. The password manager can be downloaded via the security page in the browser settings.
  • Firefox 47.0.1. CLIQZ was updated to the current Firefox version.
  • CLIQZ for Linux. We added further improvements to the beta version of our Debian Linux Package and enhanced the build process, too.
  • By the way, we continue to work on performance enhancements and are adding new pieces to the puzzle with every release.

New in CLIQZ 1.4.0 (Jul 1, 2016)

  • Many users requests and comments can reach us every day and we are very grateful. They help us to prioritize the development of new functions and to identify where there is need for improvement.
  • Due to the great demand for more encrypted connections to websites and for a password manager we HTTPS Everywhere and LastPass integrated. We work every day to further improvements that make surfing with CLIQZ even better and safer.
  • WHAT'S NEW:
  • HTTPS Everywhere for secure connection to websites. CLIQZ now offers another safety function thanks to the integration with the free software HTTPS Everywhere. Automatically replaces unencrypted page requests (HTTP) with encrypted (HTTPS), if possible. The function is enabled by default and can be controlled via the browser menu and settings in the Security tab.
  • LastPass password management. Many users have asked for an easy way to organize their passwords. Here LastPass was high on the list used software. Existing LastPass users can now rejoice: Use the security settings in the browser menu you can download LastPass and use in CLIQZ immediately.
  • Forget mode for track looser surfing. Because CLIQZ thanks advanced data protection functions even when "normal" browsing protects the privacy of the Internet, we have the "private" mode renamed what it actually does: namely on the computer being used just forget what pages were visited.
  • Upgrading to Firefox 47.0. The new features of the current version of Firefox were taken in CLIQZ. These include improved video capabilities and security enhancements.
  • WHAT IS RESOLVED:
  • Welcome message for new users has not been shown. In some cases new CLIQZ users had unfortunately without a welcome message and little tips in the use of CLIQZ aboard. We have restored the introductory views for all users, and we apologize to all those who had to start with CLIQZ without brief intro.
  • Linux Beta. Our Linux Beta version contains several fixes, especially visual art. Interested to test CLIQZ for Linux? Here you can find more information on our current beta version.
  • WHAT IS BETTER:
  • Preparations for multi-processor architecture. Like Mozilla's Firefox team, we are preparing for the transition to a multi-process architecture. We are still in the preparation and making good progress.
  • The checksums for the latest version of CLIQZ browser for Windows and Mac as we always like to request.

New in CLIQZ 1.1.2 (Apr 29, 2016)

  • WHAT HAS BEEN FIXED:
  • Start and New Tab Page – Search via central search bar. Hitting a modifier key while the focus was on the central search bar resulted in the name of the key being printed to the URL bar. We fixed this issue, so that now the modifier keys are back to doing just what they are supposed to do: modify what you type.
  • Additional fixes on the New Tab page. A few smaller fixes and enhancements were made to the page and a few measures were taken to enhance its stability.
  • List of alternative search engines cut off. The Q-Menu in the browser bar offers a selection of search engines that can be used in case CLIQZ does not return the ideal result for your query. This list of 12 providers was cut off at the bottom for Windows users, but now it is back to full length.

New in CLIQZ 1.1.1 (Apr 29, 2016)

  • WHAT IS NEW:
  • User-Feedback – Remove Top Sites from New Tab page. You can now easily remove single Top Site tiles from your new tab view by moving your mouse over the tile (don't click right away) and then clicking on the little “x” icon that will appear. The link will be removed from the new tab page permanently, but it will remain in your browser history.
  • User-Feedback – Add Top Sites to New Tab page. We added a second row of Top Sites which can be used to add up to 5 web-addresses manually. Click on the “+” icon and either type or paste a copied URL into the little box that will appear. Hit “Add” to save the link. Of course, manually added Top Sites can be removed again just as described above.
  • Update to Mozilla Firefox 45. CLIQZ was synchronized with the latest version of Firefox.
  • User-Feedback - Ecosia added as alternate search engine. You can now find Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees, on the list of our “backup” search options.
  • WHAT IS BETTER:
  • CLIQZ Anti-Tracking Optimizations. The interface of our Privacy Protection dropdown was enhanced to make the information it contains easier to understand.
  • User-Feedback – Context Search. Users can search for a term or text by highlighting it on a website, right-clicking on the highlighted section, and then selecting “CLIQZ Search for …”. This will open a new tab with the respective search results instantly available.
  • Attention to detail. Once again we’ve tweaked some visuals, for example we adjusted the size of the browser icon in the Dock on Mac and made some icons on Windows a bit crisper.
  • WHAT IS FIXED:
  • CLIQZ maintenance service update. Our maintenance service failed to update correctly in some cases. This has been fixed now.
  • Language Packs and Themes. With this release, language pack and theme add-ons were disabled in the CLIQZ browser, because they caused issues after installation. This measure was also taken as part of our closed-environment approach to better privacy protection.
  • Welcome screen typos fixed. Happens to the best of us, right? Some tiny mistakes sneaked into our onboarding text. We fixed them instantly after they were discovered.

New in CLIQZ 1.0.2 (Mar 14, 2016)

  • WHAT IS NEW:
  • Anti-Tracking. Our new Anti-Tracking function visualizes the trackers behind the websites you visit. It removes all information that could identify you from the data collected by these trackers. Thus, your personal information stays with you. Learn more here.
  • Search via Proxy (Beta). We have added an option to let all search queries go through our network of proxy servers. Here are more details.
  • Adieu Add-ons. Browser-Extensions offer many useful functions. They also collect large amounts of user data and are almost impossible to control. That's why we took the bold step to block all add-ons for now. We are working on potential alternatives and privacy-friendly compromises.
  • A new Welcome. We updated our onboarding for first-time users. On opeing the browser, they now see a quick 3-screens introduction to the benefits of CLIQZ.
  • WHAT IS FIXED:
  • Updates on Windows. Windows users got an error message when they tried to update to the last version. This problem has been fixed. As a result, iupdates should work smoothly again on Windows.
  • Just blank. If you prefer a blank start into the internet, you can now set the start page of the CLIQZ browser to an empty page. In the settings, go to "General" and uncheck the options to restore the windows and tabs of the previous session and to show the CLIQZ start page. With the next browser launch, you should just see a white canvas.
  • Search via the context menu. Ever tried marking text on a website and then right-clicking on that text? What you get is the so called context menu. Among others, it offers a function to search the web for the highlighted words with CLIQZ. Some users saw this function twice. This has been fixed.
  • Digital Signatures in Windows. Last issues with updating the digital signatures were fixed.
  • WHAT IS IMPROVED:
  • Icon 2.0. Our Browser Icon evolves with our software. A redesigned version went live with this 1.0 release.
  • Update to Firefox 44.0.2. We keep pace with Firefox and update to the latest version as soon as possible.
  • Cosmetic changes and bug fixes. As usual we found and fixed a few minor visual and content related issues.
