Copan Changelog

What's new in Copan 11.01

Feb 18, 2011
  • General Improvements:
  • Many a dialog that refers to an output file or to a codes table now has an Open button alongside the List button. This means that you can open and hence edit the said file as an alternative to merely listing it.
  • Various small improvements to the user interface
  • Also, various fixes to random memory problems have been made. This should prevent many of the crashes that some have experienced recently.

New in Copan 10.09 (Oct 2, 2010)

  • Coordinate transformation option added to Import / Export modules.
  • Export to GeoLab IOB option added to Field modules.
  • Bearing-distance conversion options added to COGO / Map Trav modules.
  • ΔZ Display added to Measure tool.

New in Copan 10.05 (Jun 3, 2010)

  • Transform Coordinates using More Control Points
  • The maximum number of control point pairs, in Transform by Control Points, is now up to 50 from 20.
  • Export Point Names to Total Station File
  • You now have the option, in Export Points to Total Station File, to output the (alphnumeric) point names, instead of the (numeric) point numbers.
  • Ignore Filter when Viewing Points
  • You now have the option, via General Program Settings, to always see all points in the display window, even when a filter is in effect.
  • Direct and Inverse Calc Modes: together again
  • From version 08.12, COGO's direct and inverse were separate calculation modes. Now, by popular demand, they've been re-united. Based on what values you've entered, Copan should know what you want.
  • Offset-constrained Inverses
  • In COGO's Direct / Inv calc mode, if you enter a From Point, an Offset, and a To Point, Copan will calculate the bearing and distance which, combined with the given offset, connect the From point to the To point.
  • List Calcs, just the calcs
  • In Field Data Process, the List Calcs button now just lists the calculations. You no longer need to recalculate everything to get the listings.
  • Zoom To Point
  • Via the new menu item Viewing & Printing | Zoom To Point..., you may enter a Point number and choose how many times you wish to Zoom in. Copan will then center the display upon, and zoom into, the given point.
  • Info Display File in Current Project Folder
  • The info.display.txt file is now placed in the current project folder. Before it went into your personal copan settings folder. There are two minor ramifications:
  • If you ever did wish to go back and find the latest info.display file after you'd closed the text editor, it was often hard to find. (It was in C:\Documents and Settings\user-name\Application Data\Copan\). Now it will be where you might expect it to be (in C:\Documents and Settings\user-name\My Documents\Copan\ or in J:\V10123\Copan\).
  • During a lengthy Copan session, several different info.display files may be created, in different locations, as you create calculation results. As you open files from or save files to different project folders, info.display files will get saved to whatever the current project folder is at the time. This will slightly decrease the chance that you inadvertently over-write a recent but useful results file.

New in Copan 09.11 (Dec 3, 2009)

  • Now runs on 64-bit architectures
  • Dependent Field Traverse Adjustments Now Working:
  • Copan can process and adjust multiple traverses within the Field Data Process module. Until now, however, any traverse that depended on an intermediate point along a prior traverse in the same processing session was never properly adjusted. Now, if you have a traverse that is controlled by any point along an earlier traverse in the same field file, it will be controlled using the adjusted values of the earlier traverses. (Independent traverses, that were controlled by points not on any earlier traverse in the same file, were always adjusted properly.)
  • Automatic Export of Coordfile to Ascii Now Working:
  • You may know that you can ask Copan to export a coordinate file to Ascii automatically upon closing the coordfile. Since version 09.06, however, that function was broken. It is now working properly again.
  • Point Cross Sizes Now Stable:
  • Whenever you view graphically a coordinate file, the point numbers and crosses remain at the same size no matter what level of zoom you are at. There were occasions, however, when the small point crosses started to grow or shrink in size. (This may have happened if you changed the Copan window to be very thin in shape.) On very rare occasions, the crosses would grow to ridiculous lengths and the program would crash. The point crosses should now be stable in size (the point numbers always were).
  • Mouse Wheel Double-click Now Working:
  • You probably know that you can quickly zoom in and out of a coordfile view by turning the mouse wheel. You are also supposed to be able to quickly "zoom to extents" (i.e., zoom to view the full extent of the current set of points) by double-clicking the mouse wheel. Since version 08.06, however, that function was broken. It is now working properly again.
  • Some of you had also experienced a zooming bug with the mouse wheel — that is now fixed, too.
  • Imperial Coordfiles Now Plot to Scale:
  • You can print out any graphical view you see in the main Copan window, via the Print module. Until now, however, if your coordinates were not in metres, it was difficult to properly plot the points at a specified scale. Now, via Viewing & Printing | Options..., you can specify two important settings: your desired units of measure for the printed page (i.e., mm, cm, or inches), and the conversion factor between your coordfile units and your page units (e.g., 100, 12, 39.37, etc). The Print module will now use those options to properly scale your point plot according to your specifications.
