CopyFolder Changelog

What's new in CopyFolder 1.8

Jan 12, 2017
  • Moved the preview list to a separate resizable window. It contains the Folder List and Stray Destination Folders buttons. The latter was in the Folder List window with a shorter label. This window has a "Snap to Main Window" command on its System Menu for connecting it to the main window.
  • The Stray Destination Folders window now excludes folders that have been deleted.
  • Added the command Open Folder to the context (right-click) menu of various text fields. Selecting this command results in the same action as the System Menu command Launch File/Windows Explorer. The advantage is that it easier to access this command from a context menu.
  • Added drag-and-dropping from the preview list to the title bar of an open application as an alternate way to open a file. This is addition to double-clicking on it or using the preview-list commands Open File or Open File With.
  • Made the following windows resizable: Add Set, Copy Progress, Copy Statistics and Messages, Folder List, Program Notes, Queue Setup, and Stray Destination Folders. The Copy Progress window can only be resized horizontally and the Program Notes window can only be resized vertically.
  • The size of a resized window will be restored when it is displayed again within a CopyFolder session. These windows will be centered relative to the main window or the preview-list window if space permits.
  • Added an Expand button to the "Copy Statistics and Messages" window for showing the items that error messages relate to. Along with this is a With Details check box. When checked, related details (if available) would also be displayed. After pressing the Expand button, it changes to a Collapse button for collapsing the message display.
  • Improved the error messages that may appear in the Copy Statistics and Messages window. These messages may be easier to read if this window and these messages are expanded.
  • Added more error testing before copying a file.
  • Added check boxes and times to the date range on the Dates settings page.
  • Added check boxes to the Preview page of the Options window for detecting possible file moves. When selected, a window may appear after the Preview Statistics window is closed that allows for comparing and moving these files. The second of these check boxes allows for detecting files that have been renamed.
  • The comparisons for stray folders are now case-insensitive. The comparisons for stray files are now case-insensitive except in preview mode when detecting possible file moves includes looking for renamed files.
  • When adjusting column widths of the preview list to fit its content is selected on the Preview page of the Options window, these widths are now also adjusted when files in the preview list are deleted, recycled or excluded.

New in CopyFolder 1.7 (Jun 24, 2016)

  • The trial period is now 15 days-of-use or 30 copy-operations within 60 days.
  • Added a Queues settings page. From this page, you can define queues (or sequences) of profiles. Then you can sequence through the profiles specified by a selected queue by pressing the Preview First and Preview Next buttons. After running a preview, you can use the context-menu tools and then press the Copy button to copy the specified files. Alternatively, you can press the Copy All button to copy all of the files specified by the profiles in a selected queue without previewing them.
  • The Drive Status window, which may appear when you press the Preview or Copy buttons, now allows you to substitute an available drive for one that is not ready. These substitutions will be made in the Folders, Subfolders and Paths settings pages. This feature may be helpful when Windows changes the drive letter of an external drive.
  • You can also change drive letters by pressing the Change Drives Letters button in the Folders settings page and selecting other drive letters.
  • Restored the Cancel button to the Copy Progress window since it now works more reliably. You can still press the Esc key to cancel copying and a message in this window specifies both options.
  • There is now an option in the Existing Files settings page to specify a file-size limit when moving overwritten files to ~Versions subfolders.
  • There are now options in the Existing Files settings page to include additional tests based on size and/or archive attribute. These tests may be helpful when the dates and times of files in a source folder are adjusted to match those in the corresponding destination folder.
  • The test in the Existing Files settings page for no files being selected now allows for only deleting stray files.
  • In the Profiles settings page, changed the Restore button action to start restore-profile names with "Restore". If the corresponding profile name starts with "Backup", this word will be removed. Adjusted other settings for restore profiles. Also improved the implementation of the Rename and Delete buttons.
  • Added a remaining-time estimate to the Copy Progress window.
  • When the Compare Matches command of the context menu, which appears when you right-click on an item in the preview list, is applied to many files, the mouse pointer will change to the wait image and the Not Responding notice should not appear.
  • The displayed message from the Compare Matches command of the context menu now only includes lines that relate to a positive number of files.
  • The context menu commands "Exclude and Remember" and "Exclude and Forget" have replaced "Exclude from List" and "Remember Excluded Items". The result is that users can select between adding or not adding excluded items to the Paths page with a single command.
  • The display of file and folder counts for the preview list now has three options: "x files to copy in x folders", "x files to copy and x files to delete in x folders", and "x folders to create". This new display clearly states what will happen when the Copy button is pressed. As before, the singular versions of "files" and "folders" will be used when appropriate.
  • Added a Folder List button to the main window. When active and pressed, a window will show the number of items, total file size and planned action of each folder in the preview list. Double clicking on a row in this window will select items in the preview list that are in that row's folder.
  • The Folder List window has a button labeled "Strays...". When active and pressed, it will show a list of stray destination folders, which are destination folders that do not appear in the source folder. You can open these folders in File/Windows Explorer by selecting one and pressing the Open button. You can then review and delete a folder from File/Windows Explorer. CopyFolder does not include a delete command since it is better that you review a folder before deleting it.
  • Changed the display of folder names for the copy mode "Copy the folder tree without copying files". This new display works with the Folder List display.
  • When the dispose option on the Existing Files settings page is set to moving overwritten files to ~Versions subfolders, the number of digits in version filenames will be one or two if you do not select the two-digit option on the Numbers options page or the number of versions is less than 10. If the two-digit option is selected and the number of versions rises to at least 10, filenames will be changed to have two-digit version numbers. This option is initially selected if CopyFolder is running on a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.
  • Added the System Menu command Alter Version Filenames. When selected and allowed to continue, CopyFolder will remove leading zeros from version numbers in filenames that are in ~Versions subfolders.
  • Added a setting to the Preview options page for adjusting column widths to fit the content of the preview list.
  • Added a setting to the Preview options page for confirming copying without first previewing.
  • Merged the Date and Time columns of the preview list into a Date/Time column.
  • BUG: The Restore File command of the context menu now removes the selected file from the preview list when you approve restoring the file.

New in CopyFolder 1.6 (Jan 20, 2015)

  • The trial period is now 15 days-of-use or 30 copy-operations within 90 days.
  • The system requirements no longer mention Internet Explorer (I.E.) since it is assumed that users now have I.E. 4.0 or later installed on their computers.
  • Revised the checking for a drive not being ready. A drive is not ready when it is not connected, not yet detected by Windows, or doesn't contain a disk. This program will display a window that shows drive status in a simple format. In addition, if this program is registered, pressing the Wait button in this window will result in drive status being updated once a second until all needed drives are ready.
  • If the destination drive is a CD or DVD drive, this program will test if the disk that is in this drive is writable in the same manner as disks in other drives are writable before preventing the use of this drive.
  • Checking or unchecking the box labeled Preview List will show or hide the Preview area.
  • In the Preview list, split the Modified column into Date and Time columns. When appropriate, the Date column now displays Yesterday or Today instead of the actual dates. Also rearranged the columns so that most of the Date column appears without horizontal scrolling.
  • The Compare Overview and Compare Details commands of the context menu, which appears when you right-click on a file in the Preview list, may now apply to multiple files.
  • Context menu commands that apply to a single file no longer display an error message if multiple files are selected. Instead, only the file where the user right-clicked is selected for these commands.
  • Added a Restore File command to the context menu. Selecting this command will copy a file from a destination folder to the corresponding source folder. If this source folder is on an internal hard disk, the overwritten source file will be moved to the Recycle Bin.
  • Added a Remember Excluded Files (or Folders) command to the context menu. This command allows you to see and change the state of the check box in the Paths page.
  • Added a Select None command to the context menu for clearing the selection.
  • Reordered the commands in the context menu and renamed a command to Open Containing Folder. Opening this folder will usually include the selected file in the Preview list being selected in Windows (or File) Explorer. If the folder tree is not displayed, use the View menu to display it. The commands may be View, Explorer Bar, Folders or View, Navigation pane, Navigation pane.
  • Added a check box to the Preview page of the Options window for centering the main window when there is a change in showing or hiding the Preview area.
  • Added a check box to the Add Set window of the Subfolders page for clearing the list of sufolders.
  • Subfolder names that begin with a dollar sign or a period are automatically excluded. You can include specific ones by adding them to the list in the Subfolders page with the include option selected.
  • Added a check box to the File/Folder Names page for allowing typos. The four types of typographical errors are insertion, deletion, substitution and transposition.
  • Added a Typos page to the Options window to provide a way to specify the minimum separation between typos. This setting lets you adjust the similarity of words that differ by typos. Without a minimum separation, any word could be modified to any other word through a series of typos.
  • In the Copy Progress window, the overall progress bar now fills in as each portion of a file is copied. Previously, this progress bar showed the result of copying a file only after it was fully copied. If there is an error in copying a file, the position of this progress bar will revert to what it was before copying of this file started.
  • When the Preview or Copy operations run, the settings pages now look deactivated. However, the list boxes in the Subfolders, File/Folder Names and Paths pages now are scrollable even when deactivated.
  • The registration-reminder message now appears at most once a day. Previously, it appeared every time a user started the program when the trial period was nearing its end.
  • It should now not be possible for a user to run two instances of CopyFolder simultaneously. This restriction prevents losing settings changes, which may occur when a user runs two instances and makes changes to the settings in the first instance that is closed.
  • Pressing the Suggest button in the Compare Setup window will now result in the program looking for ExamDiff also in the path where it would be installed on a 64-bit computer.
  • BUG: When CopyFolder is run on Windows 8, the Preview-area's horizontal scroll-bar does not always work. When that happens, it is too short. Put in fixes for this problem. You could also try pressing the Options button, selecting the Preview page, changing the state of the first check-box and pressing the OK button.
  • BUG: While previewing, the program displays file and/or folder counts, and the current folder path. When a folder path was too long, some or all of it was not shown. Now as much as the path as will fit is shown in the display area with the rest of it clipped off.
  • BUG: Corrected the titles for exporting the Preview list to a comma-separated-values file.
  • BUG: In the Dates settings page, selecting a number of years that is not a multiple of four on February 29th for the "During last" option may have resulted in date filtering not working. This has been fixed.
  • BUG: In the Dates settings page, the number entered for the "During last" option was not retained. This has been fixed.

New in CopyFolder 1.5 (Mar 6, 2014)

  • In the Subfolders settings page, changed the "+/-" codes to "//" tags since these tags are easier to notice than "+/-" codes. The first tag corresponds to the "+" code. The second tag differs from the first one in that subfolders of the specified folder are not included. And the third tag corresponds to the "-" code. Use the Edit and Add buttons to switch between these tags. The "" entry can only be switched between the first two tags.
  • Instructions in the Subfolders settings page now depend on whether the include option or the exclude option is selected.
  • In the Subfolders, File/Folder Names and Paths settings pages, pressing the Add button will replace a similar entry if doing so results in a valid entry.
  • In the Subfolders settings page, when the Add Set window opens, it will fill its list with subfolders of the source folder. If you alter the displayed folder path, press the Gather Subfolders button to refill this list.
  • Removed the Flip buttons from the Subfolders and File/Folder Names settings pages since, with the change to using tags, it is unlikely that many entries will need to switched between include/match and exclude.
  • Added an Undo button to the Subfolders, File/Folder Names and Paths settings pages for restoring the last set of removed items.
  • Resting the mouse pointer over the Remove button of the Subfolders, File/Folder Names and Paths settings pages now results in a screen tip that displays the number of items that will be removed if this button is pressed. Resting the mouse pointer over the Undo button on these pages results in a screen tip that shows how many items will be restored if this button is pressed.
  • In the File/Folder Names settings page, changed the "+/-" codes to "/" tags since these tags are easier to notice than "+/-" codes. Use the Edit and Add buttons to switch between these tags.
  • Text in the File/Folder Names and Paths settings pages now depends on the copy mode in the Folders page. When the third copy mode is selected (for copying the folder tree), "file" is replaced by "folder" in this text.
  • File sizes are no longer limited to 4 gigabytes. However, the total size of files to copy is now limited to 8 exabytes, where an exabyte is 1024*1024 terabytes, a terabyte is 1024 gigabytes and a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes.
  • Size filtering now allows for files whose size exceeds 4 gigabytes. Added "gigabyte(s)" to the units lists on the Sizes settings page. When "byte(s)" is selected, you may enter up to 9 digits in the corresponding text field. Otherwise, you may enter up to 4 digits in this field.
  • In the Attributes settings page, you can now choose to retain or clear hidden or system attributes in destination files.
  • On the Verify settings page, changed options from asking about overwriting destination files with selected attributes to those specifying that the program should not overwrite destination files with these attributes. This is so CopyFolder does not stop copying to ask these questions.
  • If you don't check the avoid-stopping option of the Verify settings page, there may be windows that display error messages and ask you if you want to continue copying. Unless you press the Stop Countdown button, these windows will self-close in 10 seconds with copying resuming. Duplicate messages that a folder cannot be created are suppressed.
  • Revised the Existing settings page by changing its tile to Existing Files, removing the rename options, moving the recycle option to a new list and adding the versions option. This new list is for specifying how to dispose of existing destination files before they are overwritten. They could be deleted, recycled if on a fixed disk, or moved to ~Versions subfolders. By putting versions into subfolders, the main destination folders are not filled with extra files. Prior to CopyFolder being registered, the maximum number of versions is limited to 3. Once it is registered, this limit becomes 99.
  • Added a File Security settings page. This page only appears when CopyFolder is run on Windows XP or NT 3.5, or later. File security information provides finer access control than attributes do. This feature requires that CopyFolder be run as an administrator program and that file security be supported on the source and destination drives. Pressing the Show How button will display information about running CopyFolder as an administrator program.
  • Error messages in the "Copy Statistics and Messages" window are now in tree format. As a result, messages are grouped into categories whose titles show the number of messages in these categories. Clicking on the plus sign in a box before a category title opens the category to show the paths for which the error applies. If there is a plus sign in a box before a path, clicking on it will display further detail. Clicking on the new Export button, specifying a new filename and pressing the Save button will result in the information in this window being written into that file. If you select an existing filename, you will be asked if you want to overwrite the corresponding file. Duplicate messages that a folder cannot be created are suppressed.
  • If the Preview Statistics window shows that there isn't enough available space, a new window will appear after pressing its OK button. This window will tell you what to do if you are planning to copy onto a single disk or drive and what to do if you are planning to copy onto multiple removable disk or drives. In the latter case, steps will be listed and CopyFolder will offer to handle the first two steps for you.
  • The amount of computer memory (called a buffer) for copying now accounts for the largest size of the files to copy. This results in faster copying of large files.
  • In the new Fonts page of the Options window, you can specify using a proportional or fixed font for the preview list, rename-file window, and file or folder names/paths in various settings pages. Moved the font setting for the preview list from the Preview page to this page.
  • In the context menu, which appears when you right-click on a file in the preview list, the Compare File command has been split into Compare Overview, Compare Matches and Compare Details commands. Selecting Compare Overview displays a window that is similar to the previous Compare File window. Selecting Compare Matches counts how many of the selected files match. It can be applied to multiple files and used before or after copying files. And selecting Compare Details goes directly to an external comparison program (once it is set up).
  • Setting up an external comparison program is now in a new window whose title is Compare Setup. It is reachable by pressing the Add button in the Compare Overview window. However, you can also drag and drop to the drop-down list in the External Comparison Program section of the Compare Overview window.
  • In the Compare Overview window, when a file cannot be opened, this program now distinguishes between this file not existing and being unable to access it to read its date and time.
  • Renamed the "Show Tip of the Day" command on the System Menu to Show Program Notes since users may want to read more than one item in a day and the text is more extensive than is suitable for tips. This window now also opens by pressing the F1 key from the main window or the Options window. In those cases, this window will be positioned at an appropriate topic.
  • Pressing the "Topic:" button of the Program Notes window opens the "Choose a Topic" window. This window now has a search feature. Topic names and text are searched when the Find button is pressed.
  • The Register CopyFolder command on the System Menu no longer opens a web page when CopyFolder is registered. The System Menu can be reached by clicking on the icon at the left of the title bar or by pressing Alt+Spacebar when CopyFolder's window is active.
  • Launching Windows (or File) Explorer from the System Menu or by pressing Ctrl+L when the cursor is in a text field now checks if the text in this field is an existing folder path. If it isn't, CopyFolder now asks if you want to position Windows (or File) Explorer at "C:\." The System Menu can be reached by clicking on the icon at the left of the title bar or by pressing Alt+Spacebar when CopyFolder's window is active.
  • BUG: In CopyFolder 1.4, numbers that were entered into the Sizes settings page were not retained. This has been fixed.
  • BUG: In the Sizes settings page, the test to see if the least size exceeds the most size was run too often. Now it is run when you click on the tab for another page.
  • BUG: Having a subfolder of the source folder that matches the destination folder could have resulted in unexpected folders being created. This type of subfolder is now excluded.
  • BUG: File or folder names that begin with a digit were improperly placed after other items in the Subfolders and File/Folder Names settings pages. This has been fixed.
  • BUG: When a restore profile was created in the Profiles page, the profile on which it was based became corrupted. This has been fixed. Also fixed other problems with this feature.
  • BUG: Removed the Cancel button from the Copy Progress window since it did not work reliably. Instead, there is a message to press ESC (the escape key) to cancel copying files. You can now also press the Close Box in the upper right corner of this window to cancel copying.

New in CopyFolder 1.4 (Jun 26, 2013)

  • There is now an automatic entry of "+" in the Subfolders list for each profile. This entry is added to lists created by prior versions of CopyFolder and appears in new profiles. It can be unchecked but cannot be flipped (between including and excluding), edited or removed. Its purpose is to simplify specifying which subfolders are to be included.
  • Changed the Filenames page label to File/Folder Names since the third copy-mode copies a folder tree without copying files.
  • BUG: Folder name filtering was not being applied when copying a folder tree without copying files (third copy mode). This has been fixed.
  • There is now an automatic entry of "+" in the File/Folder Names list for each profile. This entry is added to lists created by prior versions of CopyFolder and appears in new profiles. It can be unchecked but cannot be flipped (between matching and excluding), edited or removed. Its purpose is to simplify specifying which names are to be included.
  • You can now run only one instance of CopyFolder at a time. When multiple instances of a previous version of CopyFolder were run, changes to settings that were not in the last instance to be closed were lost.
  • If you try to close this program after pressing the Preview button but before pressing the Copy button, it will display a window that asks you to confirm that you want to exit this program. This feature is for when you pressed the Preview button, intended to press the Copy button, but forgot to do so.
  • BUG: When a preview-list file was deleted or recycled by right clicking on it and selecting Delete File(s) or Recycle File(s), the copy progress-bar might not fill to the end when copying was finished. Now it does. Also improved the message that appears when a file that was selected for deletion or recycling could not be removed.
  • Added a test for a drive being connected to your computer. Previously, the error message assumed that the drive was connected and asked you to insert a disk and try again.
  • The "Tip of the Day" window will display at its first tip for a new version of this program. Previously, if you used a prior version of this program, it retained its display state and tip index.
  • BUG: On Folders page, dragging and dropping an item outside of a folder text-field may have resulted in an unnecessary error message. This has been fixed.
  • Pressing the OK button in the Add Set window that results from pressing the Add Set button in the Subfolders page now causes the Include/exclude option button to be selected. Previously, the All option button may have stayed selected and this resulted in the listed subfolders being ignored. You can now choose between including and excluding subfolders from the Add Set window.
  • Added a window for selecting between include and exclude on the Subfolders page or match and exclude on the Filenames page when dragging and dropping folders or files.
  • Enhanced the validity testing and visual effects for dragging and dropping items. The visual effects include CopyFolder's window becoming activated after an item is dropped on it.
  • BUG: If a file could not be copied, a stray temporary file, whose filename ends in .TMP, was sometimes left in a destination folder. These files are now deleted.
  • Text fields in the Subfolders, Filenames and Paths pages are now cleared when a new profile is created.
  • Added a glossary to define terms that might not be familiar.
  • Single-line read-only text-fields now have a light-gray background color regardless of whether there are any editable text-fields in the same window.
  • Modified the display of folder paths and counts of files and folders during previewing to use the entire line above the preview list.
  • The context-menu command for opening the containing folder in Windows Explorer now has the label Open Folder instead of Explore Folder since this label is simpler. A context menu appears when you from right click on a file in the preview list.
  • Reordered commands in the context menus so that Recycle File(s) is not near Delete File(s). Added or expanded messages to make it clear that Delete File(s) does mean move to the Recycle Bin and explain that one may prefer the "Exclude from List" command.
  • Added a Select All command to the context menus.
  • BUG: The Compare File command in the context menus did not find the destination file when the copy mode was "Gather files to this folder (without subfolders)". This has been fixed.
  • Various text fields now prevent inappropriate characters from being entered into them. You may hear a beep when an inappropriate character is typed or pasted into one of these text fields.
  • Added a System Menu item that opens CopyFolder's web page at the Registering/Buying CopyFolder section, provided that your computer is connected to the Internet. It also opens the Registration page of the Options window. The System Menu can be reached by clicking on the icon at the left of the title bar or by pressing Alt+Spacebar when CopyFolder's window is active.
  • Added a Suggest button to the Compare File window that appears when you right-click on a file in the preview list and select the Compare File command. Pressing this button will suggest using ExamDiff if it not installed on your computer and, optionally, open its web page if your computer is connected to the Internet. After it is installed, pressing this button will add ExamDiff to the list of external comparison programs or select it if it is already in this list.
  • Added a Restore Date/Time button to Compare File window. This button is available when the contents of a pair of source and destination files match. Pressing this button restores the date and time of the source file to that of the destination file and, optionally, removes it from the Preview list without adding it the list on the Paths page.
  • BUG: If an unchanged source file was open when CopyFolder was run, it may have been added to the list of files to copy. This has been fixed. Be sure to close source and destination files prior to previewing or copying.
  • BUG: File or folder names without an extension were not being matched by "+*.*" or "+". This has been fixed.
  • Added a Find First button to the Profiles page. Pressing this button results in profile names being searched from the top of the list. Pressing the Find Next button results in profile names being searched from the current profile name.
  • Widened CopyFolder's window by 10% so that items in the Subfolders, File/Folder Names and Paths pages, and the Preview list are more likely to display fully.

New in CopyFolder 1.3 (Dec 5, 2012)

  • The File Times page now allows you to specify a one-hour difference, in addition to a comparison tolerance, for comparing file times. Setting a large tolerance could cause newly-modified files to be overlooked. For example, you might make changes to a file and want to copy it back within a short time frame. This change may avoid that problem.
  • A context menu that results from right clicking on an item in the preview list now contains a Choose command in the Open File With submenu (except when creating empty folders). This command opens a window in which you may select programs, in addition to Notepad and Wordpad, to use for opening a file. You may type in program paths, use the Browse window, or drag and drop a program path. In the last case, a shortcut would be expanded into a program path. As a result, you may drag and drop a program shortcut from the Start menu.
  • The comparison command in the preview-list context menu now sends filenames to an external comparison program in the order destination file and then source file. This results in the messages relating to changes making sense for when overwriting an older file.
  • The System Menu (click on the icon at the left of the title bar or press Alt+Spacebar) now has an Export Settings command. Selecting this command, entering a filename and pressing the Save button will result in the settings of the current profile being written to a text file. This information may be helpful in figuring out why a file was included or not included. The Compare File command on the context menu of the preview list may also provide helpful information.
  • The Profiles page now has a search feature. Pressing the Find Next button will look for the next profile that contains the search text and select it if it is found.
  • Added a button to create a restore profile. This profile is for copying back files that changed to their previous version. After running a preview, you may want to adjust the settings or exclude files.
  • On the Filenames page, a checked a match pattern that does not contain any wildcard characters ('*' and '?') overrides exclude patterns.
  • BUG: When the checkbox on the Path page is checked and a file was excluded, the folder count may inappropriately decrease. This has been fixed.
  • BUG: Profile names can no longer differ from an existing name by leading or trailing spaces.

New in CopyFolder 1.2 (Jul 31, 2012)

  • The copy operation now relies on the preview list for specifying which files to copy or delete, and which folders to create. Previously, the copy operation used the file and byte counts from the preview operation and scanned the source and destination disks or driives to choose which files or folders to operate on. The effect should be shorter operation time. Several of the following changes where made to support this change.
  • The copy operation no longer reruns previewing when another program is used between previewing and copying. The concern was that some files may be created or deleted that would affect the list of selected files. Now users are expected to rerun previewing if they make file changes with another program that would cause this list to change. This program change may speed up the copying operation.
  • The preview list is now filled even when it is hidden. Previously, if you ran the preview operation while this list was hidden and then showed it, it would be empty. This change supports using the preview list for the copy operation, which may make it faster.
  • Existing files are now always considering when filling in the preview list. This change supports using the preview list for the copy operation, which may make it faster.
  • Certain operations are no longer allowed while previewing and copying. These include sorting by clicking on a column header, showing the context menu by right clicking on an item in the preview list and launching a file by double clicking on it in the preview list. These changes mostly support using the preview list for the copy operation, which may make it faster.
  • When the gather mode is selected in the Folders page, appropriate settings are fixed in the Existing page. Gathering only makes sense if you are going to overwrite a destination file when the source file is newer. Gathering now verifies that all of the filenames in the preview list are different and the newest of each file with the same name from the source path and its selected subfolders is included. These changes support using the preview list for the copy operation, which may make it faster.
  • Previewing copying a folder tree now checks if folders exist. As a result, the label in the action field of the preview list is now "create" instead of "verify/create". This change supports using the preview list for the copy operation, which may make it faster.
  • Added expanding of file and folder shortcuts to the Folders, Subfolders and Filenames settings-pages. Shortcuts typically have an image of an arrow that overlays their icons. They represent a link to a file or folder that is elsewhere on disk.
  • The "Select a Folder" dialog now supports the dragging of folder paths and shortcuts into the text field and list box of this dialog.
  • Added an "Exclude from List" command to the context menu, which is accessed by right clicking on an item or items in the preview list. Selecting this command excludes the selected files or folders from the copy operation, which now relies on the preview list. Excluded files or folders are not deleted. A list of them may be saved in the Paths settings-page for subsequent preview or copy operations.
  • Added a Paths settings-page for storing the paths of files and folders to exclude. This provides another way to filter out files and folders. Excluding folders applies to the third copy mode, which has the label "Copy the folder tree without copying files". File and folder paths as well as shortcuts may be dragged into the text field and list box on this page.
  • Added an Invert Selection command to the context menu. This may make it easier to select files to exclude.
  • Added a Compare File command to the context menu. Applying this command to a file in the preview list will display a window that shows the sizes, dates and times of the source and destination files (if they exist). It will also show if contents match or differ and allow for using an external comparison-program to compare the files. File paths or shortcuts may be dragged into the text field for selecting this program.
  • Added an Explore Folder command to the context menu. This may be useful for performing file or folder operations that are not available through CopyFolder.
  • When deleting or recycling a file by using the context menu doesn't work, there will now be an error message along with an option to stop deleting or recycling. This may be due to a file being in use.
  • Added words to context-menu commands to make it clear that they operate on single files, one or more files, or on the preview list.
  • When copying a folder tree, clicking on the In Folder button in the preview list now sorts by folder name. Also, the file/folder count now only displays a folder count.
  • The Options screen now opens at its last displayed page during a CopyFolder session.
  • Changed the display of the progress bars in the Copy Progress window to fill in smoothly instead of by blocks. This change removes the pause before reaching 100%, which served to prevent the bars from completing before copying was done.
  • Added full alphanumeric ordering to several list and combo boxes that previously used simple alphanumeric ordering. The differences show up in circumstances such as signed numbers, 10-digit numbers and numbers in parentheses.
  • Launching Windows Explorer from the System Menu or exploring a folder from a context menu will now cause Windows Explorer to display in a more familiar manner. The folder pane will be visible and the specified folder will be selected in the folder pane.
  • Added a Selected option to the types for checking and unchecking items in the list boxes of the Subfolders and Filenames pages. This provides another way to choose which items to check or uncheck.
  • If an item is not completely visible in the preview list, resting the mouse pointer over it will generally show the entire item. This feature requires that Internet Explorer 4.0 or later be installed on your computer.
  • Added file and folder icons to the preview list. These icons will be faded for files to be deleted.
  • Moved the Action column in the preview list to be the third one so you can easily distinguish between files to copy and those to delete. A faded icon also signals files to delete.
  • Added a Type column to the preview list.
  • Added First and Last buttons to the Profiles page.
  • The "Choose a Topic" window for selecting a "Tip of the Day" by topic-name now allows for sorting by name or number.
  • Changed a System Menu item to "Show Tip of the Day".

New in CopyFolder 1.1 (Jan 3, 2012)

  • Rewrote the preview and copy operations so that the user interface is more responsive and Not Responding messages do not appear in the title bar during these operations.
  • Added a Save button to the Select a Folder window so you can modify the list of folder names without selecting one. If the Folder text-box isn't empty when the OK button is pressed, the folder name in this box will be copied to a text-box on the Folders page instead of the selected folder name (if any) in the folder list. Double clicking on a folder name in this list will result in that name being copied to a Folders-page text-box.
  • Added an "Append to Destination Path" button to the Folders page. When pressed, CopyFolder will append the part of the source path after the colon to the destination path unless part of the source path is selected. In that case, the selected part is appended. In both cases, a backslash is inserted or removed as needed.
  • Replaced the gather-files option on the Folders page with the following choices in a drop-down list. The last choice allows for reproducing a folder tree in another subfolder.
  • Copy files into folders (default action).
  • Gather files to this folder (without subfolders).
  • Copy the folder tree without copying files.
  • The Subfolders and Filenames pages now have check list boxes instead of regular list boxes. This allows for choosing to use a subset of the listed entries. This may be helpful when you know that only files in some of the listed folders have changed or you decide to adjust the filename filtering without removing entries. There are also Check and Uncheck buttons, and a type drop-down list to make choosing entries easier.
  • Fixed the rules for including and excluding subfolders. Now it is possible to include the files in a folder without including the files in folders leading up to it.
  • Added an option to set a comparison threshold for comparing file times. This may be helpful when copying files between internal and external disks or drives since file times can be off by a few seconds or even an hour. Setting a positive comparison threshold may prevent identical files from being viewed as being different.
  • When previewing or counting files and bytes as the first step of copying, the current folder name is displayed so that you can see the progress. (This first step occurs when previewing has not been done or another program gains focus between previewing and copying.)
  • When exporting a preview list to a text file, the display now starts with showing the number of files and folders that are in this list.
  • The font for the preview list can now be a proportional or fixed font. When it is a fixed font, file and folder names may be easier to read. In that case, you may want to adjust column widths and select the option to remember column widths, which is on the Preview tab of the Options screen.
  • The number of spaces between dates and times is now adjusted so that times line up in the preview list when a fixed font is selected and when exporting this list to a text file.
  • There is now a check box on the Existing page for deleting destination files that are not in the source folder. This feature enhances CopyFolder's use as a synchronizing program.
  • Added a context menu to the preview list with commands Open, Open With, Rename, Delete and Recycle. The last one appears when the source disk is a fixed disk. To access this menu, right click on a row in the preview list. (If you swapped buttons on your mouse, then use a left-click.) The opening and renaming commands apply to one file at a time. The deleting and recycling commands can apply to multiple files. In that case, there will be query to confirm the operation. When deleting destination files, the Rename command is removed.
  • Added an Action column to the preview list since actions may now be copy files, verify/create folders, or delete destination files that are not in the source folder.
  • Changed "prepends" to "prefixes" in the Subfolders and Filenames pages since "prepends" is not a common word. It is intended to mean attaching at the front of a word.
  • Pressing the Browse button on the Folder page, Subfolders page or Select a Folder window will display a resizable window that includes folder-management features when CopyFolder runs on Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) or later.
  • On the Preview Statistics window, when the space needed exceeds the available space, three red asterisks now precede the display of available space in addition to this display being in red text. This may help color-blind people notice when there isn't enough space to store the selected files.
  • The Copy and Close buttons are now grayed out when the Preview operation is in progress (from pressing the Preview button). Previously, pressing the Copy button would stop the Preview operation. The Copy-button label no longer changes to "Copy..." at the end of the Copy operation.
  • Added Previous and Next buttons to the Profiles page for sequencing through profiles during a CopyFolder session. Fixed a bug in the Rename feature on this page.
  • Made the Copy Progress window wider so that longer folder-names will display fully. The progress bars will no longer finish filling-in until their corresponding progress levels reach 100%.
  • Made the Copy Statistics and Messages window wider so that less scrolling is needed to display messages.
  • The rename patterns on the Rename list of the Existing tab now start with "_prev (1)" and "_new (1)" instead of with "_prev" and "_new". This way, the previous or new versions of a file would be arranged in increasing order when files are sorted by name.
  • Moved the text fields down in the Subfolders and Filenames pages so that it is clear that the Include, Match and/or Exclude options apply to the subfolder or file name in the text fields. Fixed a problem with pressing the tab key to sequence through controls on the Subfolders page.
  • When a column button in the Preview list is first clicked, the corresponding column is alphanumerically sorted in increasing order. If it is clicked again without any other column button being clicked, that column is sorted in decreasing order. Previously, if a column button was clicked and either the Preview button was clicked or the profile was changed, the next click of this button without clicking on any other column button would result in reverse sorting. This problem has been fixed.
  • Dragging and dropping an inappropriate item from Windows Explorer to the Folders, Subfolders or Filenames pages will now result in an error message. Previously, such items were rejected without an error message.
  • The Sufolders page now has an Add Set button. When pressed, it displays a dialog for including a set of source subfolders. In addition, the Browse buttons on this page and in this dialog box start at the source folder instead of at the My Computer folder.
