New in DxO PhotoLab 1.0.1 Build 2565 (Nov 9, 2017)

  • DxO OpticsPro becomes DxO PhotoLab:
  • First released thirteen years ago, DxO OpticsPro revolutionized image processing with the first software-based optical corrections based on laboratory-grade mathematical models. Today DxO OpticsPro represents a complete RAW conversion solution that has far outgrown its initial scope, with unique features like DxO PRIME, the gold standard in noise reduction technology, and DxO Smart Lighting, an intelligent exposure tool. By adding powerful local adjustment tools, DxO OpticsPro now gives photographers new creative opportunities and ushers in a new era. Thus, DxO is proud to highlight this important evolution by giving its award-winning software a new name that reflects its power and versatility: DxO PhotoLab.
  • Universally accessible U Point technology in a non-destructive workflow:
  • Through the acquisition of the Nik Collection assets from Google, DxO has integrated U Point technology, a favorite feature of millions of photographers who use Nik Software products. This local adjustment technology allows users, with just a few clicks, to make complex selections, which would normally take meticulous, time-consuming work using a brush tool. Following this recent acquisition, DxO PhotoLab is now the only software to offer U Point technology in a non-destructive RAW workflow.
  • A comprehensive local adjustment solution:
  • To provide photographers with all the tools they need to make local corrections, DxO is rounding out DxO PhotoLab’s feature list with an auto mask retouching brush that’s perfect for making precise selections, especially on portraits, as well as a graduated filter tool that’s useful for landscape photography. These tools share many similarit ies with Control Points: they give all users access to essential settings options, including exposure, contrast, white balance, micro-contrast, vibrancy, sharpness, and the addition of a bokeh effect. For an even better user experience, all of these options are displayed in the Local Equalizer above the image, right next to the area being retouched. These controls are also fully integrated in DxO PhotoLab's RAW conversion feature and are non- destructive. For example, users can restore highlights locally by using the extra data contained in the RAW file without changing the rest of the photo. Photographers who use JPEG files can use these local adjustment tools as well. DxO PhotoLab also lets users work with maximum efficiency by allowing them to use several different tools within the same selection.
  • New Repair tool:
  • DxO PhotoLab includes a repair tool that has been rebuilt from the ground up. The interface is just as simple as before, featuring a simple brush that can be used on the areas that need retouching; but the underlying algorithm provides much better — and faster — results. This revamped Repair tool is now a fully-formed corrective tool that lets users quickly and easily get rid of undesirable elements in their photos.
  • Optimal Lens Sharpness in RAW files even at the highest sensitivities:
  • Lens Sharpness has been an exclusive feature of former DxO OpticsPro for the last decade. Available for the nearly 40,000 camera-lens combinations DxO has analyzed in its laboratory, this feature applies the most appropriate sharpness correction to each point in the image’s field of view, while also accounting for the type of equipment and shooting settings used. So as to not detract from the quality of the image, the Lens Sharpness optimization feature also adapts to the image’s ISO level — a part of the tool that was a particular point of focus in the new DxO PhotoLab release. RAW images are now much sharper when shot at medium-sensitivity settings, while noise levels remain well-controlled. This improvement, especially when used in conjunction with DxO's exclusive PRIME noise-reduction technology, opens up even more opportunities for low-light photography.

New in DxO PhotoLab 10.0.0 Build 800 (Oct 30, 2014)

  • DxO OpticsPro 10 introduces DxO ClearView, a spectacular new feature that eliminates atmospheric haze from photos. This new version also improves the revolutionary PRIME denoising technology, which offers a gain in image quality of up to one stop greater than the best denoising algorithms on the market
  • DxO OpticsPro leverages DxO Lab’s rigorous scientific calibration of camera equipment, now including over 20,000 camera and lens combinations. Based on this proprietary data, DxO OpticsPro is able to offer the most powerful tools for processing RAW and JPEG images: unequaled optical corrections, intelligent optimization of exposure and contrast, and preservation of colors and details. Its many presets allow photographers to adapt the processing to suit their tastes, and to bring out the best in their photos in just a few clicks
  • New DxO ClearView feature:
  • The new exclusive DxO ClearView feature automatically eliminates the phenomenon of atmospheric haze visible in many landscape photos, as well as the smog often present in urban images. Based on a powerful algorithm, DxO ClearView analyzes the color components of each pixel and locally improves the image contrast. The results are spectacular: in just one click, the contrast in the image is instantly improved and faded colors are revived. For expert photographers, the intensity of the effect can be modified so as to adjust the correction to suit their tastes.
  • Improved revolutionary PRIME technology:
  • Designed to achieve optimal image quality, DxO OpticsPro 10’s revolutionary PRIME (Probabilistic Raw IMage Enhancement) denoising technology has been optimized to increase speed, with processing time up to 4 times faster! In addition, the interface of the Noise reduction palette has been improved and provides a larger area for previewing denoising.
  • A DxO exclusive, PRIME denoising technology is based on a thorough analysis of the structure of an image in order to differentiate between noise and fine details. For each pixel, nearly a thousand neighboring pixels are studied to identify the similarities and recombine information. This ultra-high-quality denoising brings spectacular results: textures, details, and color saturation are preserved, particularly in shadows, even in images shot at very high sensitivities.
  • DxO Smart Lighting and DxO Lens Softness optimization:
  • The exclusive DxO Smart Lighting feature optimizes the contrast over the entire image by intelligently adapting to its contents. Improved in DxO OpticsPro 10, it now offers a better rendering in automatic mode, thanks to a more detailed analysis of scene contents. In manual mode, the Selective tone sliders act even more precisely: information that one thought was lost in the dark or burnt zones are better restored, even in cases of strong backlighting.
  • With its perfect knowledge of lens performance, DxO OpticsPro’s exclusive Lens Softness tool harmonizes the sharpness of photos from the center to the edges, giving images exceptional crispness, regardless of shooting conditions. It performs with fewer artifacts and preserves colors better to provide even stronger visual accents. Default color accentuation has also been increased to obtain even sharper images.
  • The power of DxO ViewPoint’s geometrical corrections applied to RAW files:
  • DxO OpticsPro 10 can now integrate DxO ViewPoint’s powerful geometrical corrections. After the DxO ViewPoint plugin is activated, a dedicated palette lets photographers directly correct perspective problems and volume deformation in RAW and JPEG images. The dedicated DxO ViewPoint palette includes all the same visual tools as the standalone application version.
  • Even more comfort and productivity:

  • Based on DxO Labs' exclusive approach of prior calibration of equipment in its laboratories, DxO Optics Pro integrates many powerful tools for automatically processing RAW and JPEG images: precise optical and geometric corrections, intelligent optimization of exposure and contrast, preservation of colors and details. Its numerous presets can be adapted to photographers' personal tastes and will help them bring out the best in their photos in just a few clicks.
  • Breathtaking images, even at extremely high ISO:
  • Thanks to PRIME (Probabilistic Raw IMage Enhancement) denoising technology, which analyzes the structure of RAW images in depth in order to differentiate between noise and fine details, DxO Optics Pro 9 offers a gain in image quality of up to one full stop over the best noise reduction algorithms currently on the market.
  • "In contrast to the usual approach of finding a better compromise between image quality and execution speed, we have created a tool whose sole purpose is to obtain the best image quality possible, "explained Frédéric Guichard, Chief Scientific Officer of DxO Labs. "For each pixel, more than a thousand neighboring pixels are analyzed. This vast exploration allows DxO Optics Pro to identify similar data that can serve to reconstruct image information. Several minutes may be required to do this, but this process takes place in the background, so users can work on other images and projects while they wait for the results."
  • PRIME technology results in truly spectacular images: noise is suppressed, and textures, details, and color saturation are preserved, particularly in shadows, for a beautifully natural look.
  • For photographers who prefer to denoise their images immediately, DxO Optics Pro 9 still offers a newly-improved high-quality "classic"denoising tool that produces finely-detailed renderings quickly, even at the highest sensitivities.
  • Unrivaled highlight management and color rendering:
  • The exclusive DxO Smart Lighting feature optimizes the overall contrast of an image by intelligently adapting to its contents. This tool has been further improved in DxO Optics Pro 9, which now offers even more powerful highlight management: details that once were thought lost are revealed, even when the information is missing in the original RAW data, and colorimetric errors are minimized.
  • DxO Labs' highly precise knowledge of the way each camera reproduces color allows DxO Optics Pro to emulate the rendering of any camera on RAW images. DxO Optics Pro 9 goes even further by proposing a new color rendering called "DxO Portrait", which preserves skin tones and naturally-saturated colors.
  • New visual presets:
  • DxO Optics Pro 9's library of presets has been completely redesigned. Portrait, Landscape, Black & White, Single-shot HDR: the new DxO presets respond to different use cases that photographers frequently encounter, and are supplemented by "Atmospheres", a new set of creative renderings.
  • A new visual presets window makes it easier for users choose which preset to apply to their images by letting them preview thumbnails of the rendering effects prior to application.
  • New export tools:
  • DxO Optics Pro 9 simplifies its workflow by allowing photographers to go directly from customizing their images to using and sharing them.
  • The "Export to Disk" feature lets users generate and save JPEG, TIFF, and DNG images in just a few clicks. The new "Export to Application" feature groups into a single transaction both processing and opening images in an external application, such as other DxO software products or other editors that specialize in photo retouching, panoramic shots, HDR, and cataloguing. Finally, the "Export to Flickr" feature adopts this same new approach, letting users process and publish their photos directly online in just one step.
  • Even more comfortable and productive:
  • The DxO Optics Pro interface has undergone another evolution, with a new workspace that highlights essential correction tools, optimizes vertical space, and reorganizes toolbars and palettes in an even more logical fashion. • Among other improvements found in DxO Optics Pro v8.1, the preferences window now displays the size of the disk space that the preview and thumbnail cache occupy.
  • In addition, the DxO Optics Modules management window has been enhanced to display all the available camera/lens combinations available, whether or not they have been installed on the user’s computer.
  • Finally, the Windows version now includes certain improvements that were previously introduced in the Mac version. For example, information layer about corrections that cannot be previewed because of the zoom level has now been removed: this information is now directly indicated in the relevant palettes for greater user comfort.
  • More flexible OpenCL management:
  • The thumbnail display as well as image processing in DxO Optics Pro 8 benefits from OpenCL acceleration (Windows version only). DxO Optics Pro v8.1 removes certain restrictions present in earlier versions and now allows users to activate this option at any time as soon as the graphics card on their computer supports this feature.

New in DxO PhotoLab 8.0.1 Build 756 (Nov 7, 2012)

New in DxO PhotoLab 8.0.0 Build 742 (Oct 31, 2012)

  • DxO Smart Lighting:
  • Master the light:
  • New DxO Smart Lighting corrects the light and contrast of your images easily and intuitively. The unique slider groups a set of very powerful tools to help you to keep control of your image contrast. DxO Optics Pro analyzes the contents of your image and recovers all the details automatically, both in the highlighted areas and in the darker zones. A DxO Labs exclusive.
  • DxO Optics Pro 8’s new Selective tone control allows you to more precisely correct the brightness of your image separately in the highlights, the mid-tones, and the shadows, for impressive results.
  • The new DxO default preset also utilizes the features of the new DxO Smart Lighting.
  • Interface and controls:
  • Redesigned organization of controls:
  • The DxO Optics Pro 8 interface is redesigned to speed up your work and make it more efficient. The basic and most important corrections, such as White balance, Exposure compensation, DxO Smart Lighting, Contrast, and Color accentuation have been regrouped in the Light and Color palette, covering 90% of the basic tasks to be performed.
  • Palette reorganization:
  • The advanced corrections have been reorganized more logically in different palettes. The new Light and Color – Advanced palette, as an example, includes the Selective tone control and the Protect saturated colors sliders. The Detail palette regroups the new Moiré and Dead pixels controls, and the Optical corrections are grouped in their own palette.
  • Output:
  • Printing:
  • DxO Optics Pro 8 new print module allows you to directly print RAW images onto full pages or contact sheets. Many settings are available: margins, layout, and data to be printed as legends, etc.
  • Performance:
  • Caching of previews and thumbnails:
  • The previews and thumbnails are now cached, which means a much faster display of images and their corrections. The image browser always displays the corrected images, even after leaving and restarting the program. Thumbnail image quality has also been improved.
  • Preview speed-up:
  • The image preview is much faster, thus accelerating the workflow.
  • Noise correction preview below 75% as an option The noise correction can be seen with zoom levels set below 75%, which was not the case in previous versions of DxO Optics Pro. You can activate this option in Preferences (it is turned off by default). If your computer can cope with it, we recommend that you activate this option. However, if the noise preview impacts the speed of your computer, you can deactivate it again at any time.
  • Other new items and changes:
  • Optical corrections:
  • Improved correction of chromatic aberrations: Thanks to its analysis of the RAW file image contents associated with DxO Optics Module data, DxO Optics Pro performs perfect correction of the color fringes found along object edges.
  • Image treatment:
  • Improved default color rendering: DxO Labs has developed and improved the color modeling of camera JPEG files.
  • Eight camera models have been recalibrated to improve the faithfulness of their color rendering (Canon EOS-5D, EOS-5D MkII and EOS-7D, Nikon D90, D5000, D7000, D3 and D700).
  • Dead pixels slider: The automatic control of hot or dead pixels that show up in high-ISO or long-exposure images can be fine-tuned with the new Intensity slider.
  • Moiré slider: The automatic control of moiré, showing as color artifacts in high-frequency details of the pictures, can also be fine-tuned with the new Intensity slider.
  • Image resampling: Bicubic sharper has been added to the resampling options in the Process tab.
  • Smart color management:
  • Protect vivid colors:
  • DxO Optics Pro 8 offers new automatic protection of saturated colors, based on your image content and your own color corrections. This new item is also part of the DxO default preset.
  • Further interface and workflow improvements:
  • Additional image filtering: It is now possible to filter and sort images by ISO speed or virtual copy number.
  • Histogram: The histogram is now smaller (to fit the new interface), and the RGB channels can be displayed individually by clicking on the respective buttons.
  • EXIF data: The EXIF palette displays additional information, such as Exposure Program, Exposure Bias, and Metering Mode.
  • Output settings: Improved layout of the output settings palette (Process tab).
