FRSFileMgr Changelog

What's new in FRSFileMgr 6.4.2

Mar 31, 2021
  • Changed:
  • The look of the windows displayed when clicking on the “Settings | Font Settings...” or the “Settings | Print Settings...” menu commands were changed, but not their functionality.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.4.1 (Feb 9, 2021)

  • Fixed:
  • If a tagged entries is set up to be launched when a memory card is inserted, it was also launched when the memory card was removed from the drive, which was not correct.
  • The change in the previous release to the “Find Files and Directories” window made searching extremely slow. This has been fixed.
  • Canceling the search before any files were found in the “Find Files and Directories” window, caused the “Searching...” text to remain in that window's grid.
  • Added:
  • The “SCRL” statusbar text, to indicate whether or not the keyboard's scroll-lock is enabled (this is used by the main Files grid, so it needed to be indicated).

New in FRSFileMgr 6.4.0 (Jan 27, 2021)

  • Fixed:
  • When moving a sub-set of the files using the “Directory | Move To | Select and Refine...” menu command and selecting all directories but only a sub-set of the files, all files NOT selected were deleted, and a second coding error led to there being no undo information generated for those files, so there was no way to reverse those deletions.
  • The “Upgraded!” toolbar button may have been shown each time the application was started.
  • Changing the main window's color scheme via “Settings | Color Scheme...” wasn't applied until the application was re-started.
  • The text above the grid that shows the total size of the file(s) selected, wasn't always updated.
  • When renaming a file such that only the case of the letters of the name was changed (e.g. “Apples.txt” to “apples.txt”), the file disappeared from the display (the file was not deleted, though; the main window's Files grid just wasn't updated).
  • There were some scenarios under which the number of files selected or shown in the statusbar wasn't correctly updated (e.g. after having moved one or more files).
  • The “Manage Sub-directories” window sometimes had its “Delete” button disabled for no reason.
  • Sometimes, when doing a search for files, the “Cancel” button of the “Find Files and Directories” window took a very long time to actually stop the search.
  • After formatting a drive, FRSFileMgr continued to show the old listing of files and directories in its main window.
  • When the “File | Fix Bad File Name” menu command completed, the data for that file may not have been updated in the main window's Files grid.
  • Ejecting thumbdrives using FRSFileMgr did not always succeed.
  • Pasting text into the main Files grid's “Notes” column, such that the column triggered a horizontal scrollbar, sometimes led to the grid's background not being drawn properly, and subsequently not being able to scroll to the left-most columns using the arrow keys.
  • The incorrect license agreement was distributed with the recent installation programs, and has been corrected with this one.
  • Changed:
  • Removed the “Directory | Go To System Folder | ...” sub-menu (see “Added:” below).
  • Removed the “Directory | Directoy Space Usage...” menu command (see “Added:” below).
  • Removed the “Directory | Directoy File Counts...” menu command (see “Added:” below).
  • The window that appears when you click on the “Drive | Info...” menu command has been changed, to both show more data and to improve the data's display.
  • The "How-to | Drive Information" Documentation Center text has been moved to the “Info” button of the re-designed window that appears when you click the “Drive | Info...” menu command.
  • When duplicating one or more files (“File | Duplicate”), the focus now goes to the first duplicated file.
  • Improved the wording in the “Duplicate Files Found” window, to make it clearer what the differences are.
  • Merged the various “FRSFileMgr | History | Version...” menu commands into one “FRSFileMgr | Version History” command that displays one PDF file that contains the entire history of the application.
  • More temporary files were discovered on a typical Windows installation, which are now reported via the “Reports | View Temporary Files...” menu command, and deleted via the “Tools | Delete Temporary Files” menu command.
  • “Launch” menu commands now respond to media being inserted as well (e.g. memory card insertions into an attached card reader).
  • Added:
  • The “Directory | Go To System Folder...” menu command, to display a window that lists all the system folders (and their actual paths) from which you can choose which one to go to. This was needed, because Microsoft has added a substantial number of system folders. The new window also makes it easier to determine which folder you want to view in the main window.
  • The “Directory | Metrics...” menu command, to show a summary of the directory's space usage, file counts, and the dates of the oldest and newest files in the directory.
  • The “Drive | All Drives Info...” menu command, to provide a complete summary of all the disk drives installed and/or attached to your computer.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.3.1 (Aug 6, 2020)

  • Fixed:
  • The “Welcome” screen may appear each time the application is started.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.3.0 (May 20, 2020)

  • Fixed:
  • Application's serial number wasn't properly registered.
  • The Recycle Bin report showed empty or near-empty entries.
  • The main Files grid's "Age" column showed "tomorrow" instead of "yesterday" for files that were a day old.
  • Pressing the Shift+Delete key combination in the main Files grid with the focus set on the “Notes” column did nothing (it should have deleted the file itself).
  • When the number of files shown in the main Files grid was changed, the number shown in the status bar wasn't updated.
  • The width of columns in the main Files grid wasn't adjusted when files were moved/deleted, or had their content modified externally.
  • When the “Reports” or “Find Files and Directories” windows' “View” button was pressed, the desired file's directory was selected, but the file itself wasn't necessarily highlighted in the main Files grid.
  • When renaming a file in the main Files grid via pasting the new file's name in the grid, the focus always moved to the top of the grid, rather than stay with the renamed file.
  • Added:
  • “FRSFileMgr | History | ...” sub-menu, to provide menu commands for displaying the application's major version histories. This historical information about the application's changes used to be shown on our web site, but are now integrated via these PDF documents.
  • "FRSFileMgr | Windows Desktop Shortcut", to add or remove a Desktop shortcut to FRSFileMgr.
  • "FRSFileMgr | Windows Start-up Shortcut", to add or remove a shortcut to launch FRSFileMgr when Windows is started.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.2.0 (Feb 27, 2020)

  • Fixed:
  • When renaming a file in the main "Files" grid and then clicking on another directory caused the new name not to be applied.
  • If there were a large number of entries in the "Undo" menu, clicking on the bottom ones did nothing.
  • When pasting multiple names to files in the main "Files" grid, often the rename would not be allowed.
  • Sorting files with digits in their names didn't yield the correct order.
  • When using the "File | Fix Bad File Name" menu command, the file name could be left empty (only showing a file extension).
  • When extracting a .zip file that contains directories, the "Duplicate Files Detected" window showed blank rows for the directories.
  • The progress bar shown when duplicating files wasn't always accurate.
  • When editing the file's notes, the "Notes" column wasn't fully scrolled into view if the new notes were wider than before.
  • Changed:
  • Re-arranged the menu commands on the "File" menu to better group them together.
  • The "Files" grid context menu's commands are now in the same order as shown in the main "File" menu.
  • When sorting the files by a column that shows check-marks, the checked entries are now shown at the top by default.
  • The main window's drive free space tooltip now uses the same unit for all numbers shown.
  • The "About FRSFileMgr" window now has its documentation integrated (it used to show our public web site's information).
  • Added:
  • The "FRSFileMgr | Apply Upgrade" menu command, to close the application, apply the upgrade, and then re-start the application.
  • The window shown for "Reports | View All File Notes" now allows for editing of the file paths, to make it easy to adjust those.
  • Double-clicking on, or pressing the Enter key in, the "Last Modified" column now displays the "Adjust Date/Time" window.
  • Double-clicking on, or pressing the Enter key in, the icons column now displays the "File Associations" window.
  • When a progress window is shown, the FRSFileMgr icon in the Task Bar area of Windows also shows a matching progress indicator.
  • When running a macro, a progress window is shown, so that you know when the macro has completed its work.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.1.4 (May 31, 2019)

  • Notes:
  • When this upgrade is applied, you will loose the custom font settings you may have set up (due to an error in a previous release).
  • Fixed:
  • When using Firefox icons to represent HTML-based files, FRSFileMgr would crash or show no files when using Firefox version 67.
  • "Files" grid: when a file was added, updated, or renamed, it could appear more than once.
  • "Files" grid: trying to select multiple cells in a column that shows check marks, would suddenly stop the dragging.
  • "Files" grid: there were annoying scrolling problems.
  • "Files" grid: when selecting a different directory, the focus didn't necessarily go to the first file.
  • When using the "Check All" button in a report window, the system files that were initially not checked became checked.
  • The report shown for the "Reports | View Cluster Size Impact..." menu command did not correctly label the row numbers.
  • The "File Associations" window would not always show available icons when viewing the list of possible icons.
  • There were typos and grammatical errors in the Documentation Center texts.
  • Changed:
  • The right-click context menu of the "Files" grid was re-arranged to put the most-often used commands near the top.
  • The "Find Files and Directories" window now shows its results grid with columns no wider than the grid itself.
  • Added:
  • The report shown via the "Reports | View All File Notes..." menu command now has the ability to delete file notes.
  • The "REC" statusbar pane was added, which is enabled when a macro is being recorded.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.1.3 (May 6, 2019)

  • Fixed:
  • Rapid file changes could cause the "Files" grid to become disorganized, placing files in random locations.
  • When renaming a file, a duplicate of the file may appear in the "Files" grid.
  • When swapping the names of two files, the same thing could happen there.
  • When sorting the files by clicking on the "Files" grid column header, the focus stayed with the file that had the focus before.
  • Changing the length of the notes in the "Notes" column could cause the column to not be automatically sized to fit its new content.
  • The recently added "File | Open With | Select Other..." did not actually work.
  • If the "Extract File Content" window had very long file paths, it caused the grid of the window to act weird.
  • Changed:
  • If files are checked but not extracted in the "Extract File Content" window, a message is shown when the "Close" button is pressed.
  • The first extracted file in the "Extract File Content" window will be the one that receives the focus when the window is closed.
  • "Set File Associations..." menu command is not enabled when the focus is on .exe or .bat (and several others) types of files.
  • Added:
  • The "Tools | Take Screen Capture" menu command, to take a screen capture of the application.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.1.2 (Feb 25, 2019)

  • Fixed:
  • "Reports | View All File Notes..." created an infinite loop causing the application to use up all of the computer's memory.
  • The settings data file could get corrupted when the application was running when the computer was being shut down or rebooted.
  • Not all file Notes set in a directory were moved along with the files when moving a directory.
  • A large number of changes happening to the selected directory could leave the Files grid not properly updated.
  • When renaming a file and an external change took place to that directory, the file being renamed may not be the one initially selected.
  • FRSFileMgr did not allow the changing of a file's name when only the case of the individual letter(s) were changed.
  • After extracting a file ("File | Unzip..."), the focus went to the parent directory, not the first file that was extracted.
  • The keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+X" did not move the Notes column text to the Windows Clipboard.
  • Pressing the "Delete" key with the focus on the Notes column, did not clear the notes, but rather deleted the file.
  • Macro: when running a macro, a file was not moved or copied if it was flagged as a duplicate when the macro was first created.
  • Unable to select applications in the "Settings | File Associations..." menu's window.
  • The "Calendar Special Dates" window, when editing a Personalized entry, didn't acknowledge the selection of the month.
  • The Easter-related dot colors in the calendars wasn't set right, and didn't respond to color-selection changes.
  • The "Image Preview" window wasn't showing its right-click context menu.
  • The "Manage Sub-directories" window may not show the sub-directories in alphabetical order.
  • The "File | Open With" sub-menu was not documented in "How-to | Menu Commands" Documentation Center.
  • Changed:
  • The file-notes data file now encrypts both the notes' texts as well as the files to which the notes belong.
  • Macro: when running a macro and a file fails to be copied or moved, it is now reported in a message window.
  • When using the "File | Unzip..." menu command, the extracted files were extracted as "read-only"; that read-only flag is now removed.
  • The "File | Fix Bad File Name" menu command was improved to better handle some cases that weren't being corrected before.
  • The edit fields of the "Find Files and Directories" window now responds to keyboard shortcuts.
  • The title of the window displayed when using the "File | Zip..." menu command is more descriptive now.
  • The "Manage Sub-directories" window now has its buttons show text in addition to icons.
  • Added:
  • The "Extract File Content" window can now, optionally, extract files ignoring the relative paths with which the files were compressed.
  • The "File | Open With | Select Other..." to show a window listing all the applications installed on the computer.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.1.1 (Oct 21, 2018)

  • Fixed:
  • When adding a sub-directory, it would show up as a zero-byte file in the "Files" grid.
  • A partially-shown row or column wasn't being drawn in the grids.
  • The "Image Preview" window would not update when the file's content was changed.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.1.0 (Oct 4, 2018)

  • Fixed:
  • When deleting a directory on a drive other than C:, the application displayed an "access denied" message.
  • When formatting a USB drive, the "Directory Browser" may not update to reflect the new state of the drive.
  • When a file was renamed, its "Notes" column text disappears (it didn't get deleted, just not re-displayed again).
  • When an image file was modified externally, the "Image Preview" window was not updated to reflect the change.
  • When an image file was deleted, the "Image Preview" window continued to show the old image.
  • When opening a file for which there was no association set, once set, the file wasn't actually launched.
  • When printing the content of a grid, the first page was always printed twice.
  • When pressing the F5 key to refresh the main window, it didn't refresh the "Files" grid.
  • The "FRSFileMgr | About..." window always showed "today" as the last-run date.
  • The "Duplicate Files Found" window showed "yesterday older" or "tomorrow newer" in its grid.
  • The number of selected files shown in the status bar was sometimes not being updated.
  • The first 9 entries at the top of the "Bookmarks" menu didn't have their matching toolbar icons set.
  • The "File | Image Preview" menu command didn't have its matching toolbar icon set.
  • Changed:
  • "Extract File Content" window has been redesigned, to allow multiple extractions from within the window.
  • Removed "Welcome to FRSFileMgr" announcement at start-up, because it caused problems in some installations.
  • Therefore, removed the "Settings | Play Welcome Message at Start-up" menu command.
  • The Documentation Center window is now fully integrated, and keyboard keys can also be used to scroll it.
  • Removed the yellow explanation areas of the popup windows, because they now have the Documentation Center window integrated.
  • If the computer is shutting down and an upgrade was downloaded, FRSFileMgr will not start its upgrade program.
  • Added:
  • Status bar text indicating the number of files shown in the main "Files" grid (keeps you from having to scroll down the grid).
  • "How-to | About FRSFileMgr", to describe the overall purpose of the application.
  • "How-to | Directory Browser", to describe how to interact with directories.
  • "How-to | Files Grid", to describe how to interact with the main window's files grid.
  • "How-to | Menu Commands", to list each of the menu commands and their purpose.
  • "How-to | Known Issues", to report all known (more permanent) issues (used to be on this web site).

New in FRSFileMgr 6.0.1 (Jun 12, 2018)

  • Fixed:
  • "File | Copy/Move To | Select & Rename..." didn't verify the existence of a duplicate file in the selected target directory.
  • Only when used from within FRSFileMgr: "Edit | Cut" to move and paste a file actually only did a copy; the original was not deleted.
  • Deleting a hierarchy of nested sub-directories often showed the not-empty-directory error message.
  • When switching directories, with the Files grid sorted by the Notes column, caused the files to be shown sorted by their names.
  • Sorting two files with the same first part name wasn't quite correct; for example, "Apple(tree).doc" was sorted before "Apple.doc".
  • Files grid: renaming a file by starting it with the lowercase "q" didn't accept that letter.
  • Files grid: pressing the lowercase "q" in a cell that can show a check-mark causes it to flip the state of the check-mark.
  • The Compressed column flag could be changed, but it is not user-configurable (the flag was reset upon the next refresh, though).
  • If a file was renamed while another application had a lock on it, the rename fails, but the Files grid continued to show the new name.
  • Deleting one or more files made the focus go to the top of the Files grid.
  • If a file was added to the directory being viewed, which file had the focus was often changed in the Files grid.
  • Deleting more than one file caused the Files grid to continue to highlight the same number of rows as before.
  • Manually temporarily sizing a column was almost immediately reset to the application's default width for the column.
  • The sorted-against up/down icon shown in the column header wasn't accounted for in calculating the width needed for a column.
  • CPU usage could be quite high when seemingly nothing was going on in the selected directory.
  • Find Files and Directories window: the first time its View button is used, the file is highlighted, but the second time it is not.
  • When several files had check-marks set in the first column in the Files grid, the Image Preview window would stop working.
  • When the Files grid was sorted based on something other than the file name, the Image Preview window could stop working.
  • Changed:
  • "Reports | View Directory Space Usage..." now reports on the selected directory itself as well.
  • "Reports | View Directory File Counts..." now reports on the selected directory itself as well.
  • Removed directory size and file counts from statusbar (see above two menu commands instead), due to high CPU usage.
  • "Reports | View Opera Temporary Files..." now reports the substantial temporary files that their new versions create.
  • Editing the text of the Notes column now uses a simple text editing cell, rather than the multi-line cell which is cumbersome to use.
  • Added:
  • "Directory Space Usage..." and "Directory File Counts..." to the context menu of Directory Browser.

New in FRSFileMgr 6.0.1 (Jun 12, 2018)

  • Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions available.
