New in FastRawViewer 2.0.0 Build 1856 RC 2 (Jul 16, 2021)

  • FastRawViewer 2.0 adds the following features (each described in more detail in corresponding sections):
  • Multi-window Display Mode with synchronous zoom, pan, focus peaking, over/underexposure highlighting, and the ability to copy the rendering parameters of RAW files

New in FastRawViewer 2.0.0 Build 1850 RC 1 (Jul 9, 2021)

  • FastRawViewer 2.0 adds the following features (each described in more detail in corresponding sections):
  • Multi-window Display Mode with synchronous zoom, pan, focus peaking, over/underexposure highlighting, and the ability to copy the rendering parameters of RAW files
  • Renaming files: either single files or groups, with optional use of templates.
  • Improved performance, especially when using fast and slow data media at the same time.
  • Improved user interface: Advanced Selection Mode; Move from _Rejected; and more
  • Before installing the new version, please read the following section (Forewarning).
  • Forewarning:
  • Extended trial period:
  • This version is activated in trial mode for 45 days (or 90 days if you have FastRawViewer v1 license installed), and we hope in this time frame to finish testing.
  • Inherited Settings:
  • The beta version is installed “on top of” version 1; this is done in order to avoid confusion with file association, default applications, etc. We tested this and consider it to be risk-free: the base functionality of FastRawViewer has been tested via multi-year use of version 1 and has not changed; the new and improved performance architecture has been tested on a sufficient audience with the FastRawViewer 1.8 Technical Preview.
  • The application Preference settings, hotkey settings, and lists of ‘last used folders’ are shared between the two versions. Downgrading from version 2 to version 1 can be done by deinstalling the new version and installing the old version.
  • The settings in version 2 whose names have not been changed but whose meanings or effects have (those are graphic mode and several performance settings), have been internally separated, and changing them in version 2 will not affect version 1 (and vice versa).

New in FastRawViewer 2.0.0 Build 1838 Beta 2 (Jul 3, 2021)

  • In FastRawViewer 2.0 (Beta2), we have added the following ways to open a file in a secondary window (the original way of copying from the main window still works):
  • Drag-n-Drop from Filmstrip
  • Drag-n-Drop from a different window
  • Via context menu in the Filmstrip (Open in window – Secondary Window #N)
  • Via context menu for an opened file (Open in window – …)

New in FastRawViewer 2.0.0 Build 1817 Beta (Jun 1, 2021)

  • Multi-window Display Mode with synchronous zoom, pan, focus peaking, over/underexposure highlighting, and the ability to copy the rendering parameters of RAW files
  • Renaming files: either single files or groups, with optional use of templates.
  • Improved performance, especially when using fast and slow data media at the same time.

New in FastRawViewer 1.7.4 Build 1736 (May 25, 2021)

  • Support for Raspberry Pi HQ camera support, improved support for RPi V1/V2 cameras
  • Improved color data for Fujifilm X-E4 and GFX100S
  • Minor changes and bugfixes

New in FastRawViewer 1.7.4 Build 1734 Beta (May 17, 2021)

  • Camera Support:
  • The color data for Fujifilm X-E4 and GFX 100S cameras has been updated.
  • Support for RAW files recorded by Raspberry Pi HQ camera (the output of raspistill with '-r' parameter)
  • Support for V1 and V2 Raspberry Pi cameras has been improved
  • New Settings/Features:
  • New Grid/Filmstrip setting - Save associated JPEG/HEIC files to filelist
  • If this is turned on, then when using Menu-Select-Save selection to file, the names of paired JPG (/HEIC) files will be saved into the file as well.
  • New setting: Special browse modes - Sort opened filelists using current sort mode
  • If this is turned off, then when in Menu - File - Open Folder - Open Filelist mode FastRawViewer will show files from a loaded list in accordance with their order in the list
  • If this is turned on (default), then files in a list will be sorted in accordance with the current sorting setting.
  • Bugfixes:
  • An error in decoding compressed RAW files recorded by some Samsung cameras (NX300 and possibly others) has been fixed, the error only appeared in macOS non-legacy version of FastRawViewer.
  • Mac: drag-drop onto the application icon would not (always) work correctly if the name of the dropped file was in non-normalized Unicode.
  • XMP sidecar may not copy/move if base file name contains several dots.
  • Special browse modes (subfolder, etc): move file shortcuts worked in special modes although they shouldn't
  • If there were completely broken files in the directory (which cannot be parsed by the RAW parser at all), then when scrolling through the contents of the directory, repeated attempts were made to parse them. If sorting by metadata was used (for example, EXIF timestamp), this led to scrolling returned to the current file (if the standard checkbox Scroll to selected image .... was not turned off).
  • Incorrect preview was displayed for some TIFF images with non-standard/non-usual image pyramid.
  • When using Standard Selection Mode (not the default one), the following bugs were found and fixed
  • If the setting Force XMP creation for RAW files was turned on, files were sorted by metadata (EXIF date, rating, label), then when turning on filtration the currently opened file would randomly change.
  • When using sorting by metadata, if the current file was deleted (Move to.. / Move to rejected), then the application would not move to the expected file (next/previous), but closer to the beginning of the list.

New in FastRawViewer 1.7.3 Build 1715 (May 17, 2021)

  • Camera Support:
  • Sony a1 (ILCE-1)
  • Preliminary support for Fujifilm X-E4 and GFX 100S
  • Minor changes:
  • New setting Preferences - Image Display - Raw image crop mode with the following choices:
  • Max. visible area (exactly what you think it is)
  • Std. vendor crop: uses the crop that is recommended by the camera manufacturer
  • User crop: even deeper crop, for example
  • DNG: set through the DefaultUserCrop tag (this is how camera crop works in Leica cameras)
  • Fujifilm: set an aspect ratio that differs from the standard. In this case, RAW is recorded for the whole sensor, the "recommended crop" is unchanged, but there is an additional tag with the Aspect Ratio.
  • Note: The Crop to manufacturer recommended margins setting has become obsolete and been subsumed by the newer, and corresponds to the Std. vendor crop option.
  • Windows: the Preferences - Zoom - Use logical pixels for zoom calculation setting is now available in the 64-bit Windows version as well, if the Preferences - Interface - Enable Global Interface Scaling setting is turned on.
  • The default value of the new setting is "turned off", so physical pixels are used when calculating zoom.
  • Double-clicking on the header of a panel no longer removes the panel from the dock. If you are used to this method, please switch to using Shift-Double-Click instead.
  • DNG files created from two-(half)frame Fujifulm files (S5 Pro and similar cameras): the BaselineExposure tag is ignored because the default value used by Adobe DNG Convertor only applies to the second (half)frame and applying it to the first leads to overbrightening (by ~3.5 stops).
  • XMP Rating/Label are (explicitly) not updated on forced XMP file(s) creation
  • XMP - Force XMP file creation is renamed to Force XMP file creation for RAW files. The effect of this setting has been changed to match the new name.
  • new shortcuts for folders tree refresh
  • Menu - File - Reload - Refresh subfolders tree (Alt-Shift-F4)
  • Menu - File - Reload - Refresh full folder tree (Alt-Ctrl-F4)
  • Save selection to file: it is now possible to append existing file
  • Bug fixes:
  • If blue was set as the color for Focus Peaking, the button in the program bottom bar wouldn't light up; and now it does.
  • If Interface Scaling is not selected in the FastRawViewer Preferences, the (legacy) environment variable QT_DEVICE_PIXEL_RATIO is ignored based on the same rules as the non-legacy QT_*SCALE_FACTOR .
  • Application may terminate with out of memory error if non-HEIC file passed w/ HEIC extension

  • Subdolder with specified name will be created in current folder (if not created before), than selected files will be copied/moved to that subfolder.
  • Enable History checkbox will turn on subfolder names history (not saved anywhere in settings, so cleaned on FRV restart). Use down arrow key (or mouse) to access history list, or just start typing to find most relevant history item.
  • Windows: new hiddend setting 'Bottom bar font in pixels', use NoBottomBarFontPixels.reg/UseBottomBarFontPixels.reg scripts to change from default. This feature is intended for dual-monitor systems with very different resolution (e.g. 4k and FullHD), when OS is unable to deliver resolution change data to application correctly (some versions of Win10 in specific cases). Most users do not need this.
  • New preferences setting File Handling - Sorting and Filtering - Ignore dashes and apostrophes on file/folder sort.
  • Controls file/folders sort order if punctuation symbols are used in names.
  • Windows: default is ON, to match sort order in Windows Explorer (but not Adobe Lightroom)
  • Mac: default is OFF, to match both Finder and Adobe Lr sort orders. Filmstrip allowed to Right dock area New method of Grid view thumbnail margin calculations to better handle folders with small file count. Preferences - Grid/Filmstrip - 'Single keys work for multiple files too' option is now ON by default. Folders panel: new Reverse sort order option (does not affect drive order list on Windows); Sort & Filter: sort by file size/file modification time works much faster now because it reads all metadata on folder open Read-Only (Windows)/ Locked or Read-Only (Mac) files support:
  • Most cameras allows to 'protect' images in camera. When files are imported from flash card to computer, this translates into:
  • Read-Only attribute on Windows
  • Locked (UF_IMMUTABLE) attribute on Mac.
  • FastRawViewer supports this flag now:
  • Grid and Filmstrip: new option 'Show Locked/Read-only status' (Mac)/'Show Read-only status' (Windows) in Grid/Thumbnail options ('Gear') menu.
  • If enabled (ON for Grid, Off for Filmstrip by default), padlock icon will be show in the top-right corner of thumbnail area for Locked/RO files.
  • Sort&Filter Panel:
  • Read-only files (Windows) / Locked/Read-Only (Mac) checkbox will appear on Files/Metadata filter box section if some locked/RO files are present in current folder.
  • If checked, only Locked/RO files will be visible in Grid/Filmstrip.
  • Read-only files first (Windows) / Read-only/Locked files first (Mac) option in Sort menu. If checked, RO/Locked files will appear first in Grid/Filmstrip view (or last, if Reverse sort option is checked too).
  • Copy/Move/Move to _Rejected: file attributes are preserved.
  • For RAW+JPEG pairs only RAW file status is checked.
  • (Mac only) Preferences - Copy/Move/Reject - Allow move/reject for locked files (default is off): Locked files are not movable on OS X, only copy allowed. If this option is checked, FRV will remove Locked flag before move, and will restore it back after move, allowing move/reject locked files.
  • Menu - File - Clear _Rejected: if 'Delete read-only files too' is checked in confirmation dialog, then
  • Windows: all attributes (e.g. hidden, system) are cleared before file removal.
  • Mac: locked flag and read-only permissions are cleared before file removal.
  • Metadata read for folder sort/filtering is about 2x faster on fast (SSD) drives
  • New option: XMP - 'RAW+JPEG mode: embed XMP block into JPEG' (default: off) - if it set to on, both XMP-sidecar for RAW file and embedded block for associated JPEG will be recorded on any XMP-changing action.
  • If off, only XMP-sidecar will be recorded. Embedded block contains complete XMP block (i.e. exposure/WB/contrast too), not only rating/label, so it can be extracted from JPEG and used with RAW file.
  • Debug log: better handling of different character sets; log files are saved in UTF8
  • Data maximum calculation: allow up to 0.002% of hot pixels
  • Bugs fixed:
  • XMP files with Label set to 5th custom label was read incorrect (no label parsed).

New in FastRawViewer 1.4.7 Build 1321 RC (Jul 2, 2018)

  • EXTENDED LICENSE KEY:
  • If you tried FastRawViewer earlier, and your trial period has ended: if you'd like to try the new version, here's a license key that works until the end of July (copy-paste it so as to not mix up the letter "O" and the number 0): P2IW6L-XOXNXX-LMBUED-GTI74X
  • JPEG HANDLING:
  • The code for JPEG processing has been revised; the way JPEG decoding works is now controlled by a few settings.
  • In Preferences - RAW+JPEG - JPEGs decode priority can be set separately for each type of JPEG file (Lone, Embedded, and External JPEGs):
  • None - do not decode at all, so this "representation" will be inaccessible;
  • On demand - the decoding will happen in the moment between switching from RAW to JPEG (when pressing J to switch, there will be a momentary delay, equal to about half of the time between loading the next file in previous versions. When pressing J a second time for the same file, there will be no such delay);
  • On file open - the decoding will happen at the moment of file load (this is how it was in all of the previous versions);
  • On prefetch - the decoding will happen during the file prefetch (this option is available only on 64-bit versions).
  • Depending on your habits, the following settings seem reasonable:
  • If you always look at JPEGs, use On prefetch;
  • If you rarely or almost never look at JPEG representations, use On demand.
  • For Lone JPEGs, not paired with a RAW, there are, naturally, only two options: On file open (as before) and On prefetch, with the others not being of any use. Because On prefetch is only available on the 64-bit version, all controls for processing Lone JPEGs are unavailable for 32-bit versions.
  • The On prefetch version uses a lot of memory: 20 Mpix JPEG takes up 3-4 MB before unpacking, and 80 MB unpacked (as RGBA); that means a 20-file cache of such JPEGs will take up 1.6 GB instead of 60 to 80 MB.
  • The above new settings have replaced these older ones:
  • Decode and show external JPEGs (when turned off this corresponds to External JPEGs: None).
  • Ignore internal JPEGs (when turned on corresponds to Embedded JPEGs: None).
  • Importing old settings:
  • Decode and show external - imported as described above (becomes None)
  • Ignore internal - imported as described above (becomes None).
  • Default image to Display:
  • External JPEG -> leads to JPEGs decode options - External JPEG: On prefetch (if >14 GB RAM) / On file open (<14 GB);
  • Internal -> leads to JPEGs decode options - Embedded JPEG: On prefetch (if >14 GB RAM) / On file open (<14 GB);
  • If >14 GB of memory is present, then Lone JPEGs will be set to On Prefetch (the Defaults button sets it the same way - depending on the amount of RAM present in the system).
  • PROCESSING RAW DATA ON A VIDEO CARD (GPU):
  • The processing of RAW data on the GPU (white balance, exposure, contrast, demosaicing for the standard Bayer) has been implemented.
  • In this mode:
  • When first displaying the file, the RAW data is loaded onto the GPU in floating point presentation
  • Recalculation from RAW data (first time, or when changing parameters: white balance, exposure correction, contrast) to RGB-representation happens on the GPU
  • For a standard RGBG Bayer, debayerization also happens on the GPU (and the quality is a bit better than on a standard CPU)
  • On a fairly modern GPU, this mode ought to be no slower than the old mode when first displaying the file and significantly (by an order of magnitude and more) faster when changing the rendering parameters (white balance, contrast, exposure correction). On a fast GPU, the first time one opens a file also becomes much faster.
  • New settings, (all in the Preferences - GPU Processing section):
  • GPU Memory Usage (this setting replaces the old Store all renderings in GPU memory):
  • Minimal - only the current image is stored in the GPU; the unused graphic resources are immediately freed up.
  • This is a very slow mode, using a minimal amount of video memory.
  • Minimal+ - uses one set of graphic resources, when moving to a smaller image, video memory is not freed up.
  • Optimal - two sets of graphics resources are used: the current image and the "next" one, in the process of refreshing video data on the screen there can't be "garbage" (bits of prior images).
  • Maximal - up to four sets of resources are used (RAW, iJPEG, eJPEG, and currently refreshed), the second RAW/JPEG switch should be instantaneous.
  • Process RAW data on GPU (in the GPU Compatibility settings):
  • None - turns off the mode
  • Bayer RAW only - processes only Bayer RAW (and achieves better demosaicing)
  • All RAW files - processes all RAW (bayer, black and white, X-Trans, full-color)
  • This setting can be turned on only if GPU Memory Usage is set to Optimal or Maximal.
  • This mode is turned separately for "non-Bayer" files, because non-Bayer (including full-color) files (panorama, HDR shots) can be very large and as such require a great deal more video memory. As such, for these files RAW-on-GPU mode could end up being slower than the old mode.
  • Default (not inherited from 1.4.7 test version!):
  • Bayer RAW only - on processors with support for 16-bit Floating Point (Intel Ivy Bridge and newer);
  • None - for older processors.
  • Note: in the versions to follow we will limit "default: on" for processing Bayer RAW data on GPU further, to include only the top GPUs and only in OpenGL mode; for now the setting is on for a wider range of devices and graphic modes, in order to collect more feedback.
  • Parallel GPU data upload (available only for OpenGL graphics engine and only for 64-bit versions of FRV):
  • None - turned off
  • RAW GPU processing - is used only for Process RAW data on GPU
  • Always - always turned on for all modes.
  • Depending on the GPU and the drivers being used, the parallel upload mode can be slower or faster - play around if it seems like "everything is too slow."
  • Use faster (but lower quality) RGB bayer demosaic - in GPU mode, a faster but lower-quality demosaicing will be used (the same as the one used on CPU).
  • HIDDEN SETTINGS (SCRIPTS):
  • UseOEUEOnGPU / NoOEUEOnGPU - using or not using the GPU to generate over/underexposure maps on the GPU (in theory, there should be no reason not to use this, but the hidden setting remains)
  • Use16BitFloatingPoint / No16BitFloatingPoint - load and use 16-bit data instead of 32-bit data onto the GPU. No real reasons not to use this, but the hidden setting is here.
  • SPEEDING UP THE INTERFACE:
  • The GPU Processing - GPU Compatibility - Force window refresh by slight resize setting has been changed to a new one (in the same chunk of settings) - Refresh window after image changed - with the options being:
  • None - no additional steps are taken to refresh the program window;
  • Normal (default) - default steps are taken, same as for FRV 1.4.6;
  • Slight resize - analogous to the old "...by slight resize".
  • The None setting is the fastest, but its workability isn't guaranteed.
  • Preferences - Dim Histogram/Stats/EXIF panels while changing files:
  • If enabled (default), GUI dimming will add 6-10msec to file change time.
  • SELECTING (MARKING) FILES MODE:
  • In FRV, a specific file-selection mode is used that differs from the standard that is used by most programs:
  • accidentally clicking on the file in Grid/Filmstrip doesn't disrupt the selection
  • the currently-open file doesn't need to be included as part of the selected group (tuneable)
  • For users for whom this mode is unfamiliar, we made it so that it can be turned off:
  • Preferences - Grid/Filmstrip - Advanced Selection mode - when unchecking this setting, the selection mode will become "standard," the same as for Windows Explorer/Finder.
  • OTHER CHANGES:
  • Interface - Active (current) file border: allows to set better visible current file border.
  • When forced Anisotropic Texture Filtering / Texture Anti-Aliasing is detected, aside from Color Mangement, RAW GPU Processing and Screen Sharpening are also turned off.
  • Shortcuts editor rearranged:
  • slightly taller standard window size to fit all shortcuts
  • File Copy/Move section renamed to File Copy/Move/Reject
  • Move file to _Rejected is now in File Copy/Move/Reject section.
  • (Windows only): The new hidden setting, WindowsCheckRemoteSession, and the corresponding scripts for implementing it NoWindowsCheckForRemoteSession.reg and WindowsCheckForRemoteSession.reg
  • When this setting is turned on, FastRawViewer checks "am I in a remote terminal session?" If yes, then the current video mode is set to DirectX9 (without changing what's set in the Preferences). If this mode differs from the default, then a second set of binary shaders will be compiled (and during subsequent launches, launch will also be faster).
  • The Image Display - Use Monochrome mode for Bayer images setting has been redone: a Detect option has been added, which will detect these files automatically.
  • The processing of Sleep/Awake has been improved (mainly, for OS X / MacOS)
  • Menu - File - Clear _Rejected subfolder:
  • The Show in Explorer / Reveal in Finder button has been added, allowing one to look at _Rejected using the file manager
  • Preferences - Copy/Move/Reject - Show detailed _Rejected folder stats before clearing the folder setting: If this is turned on, then the details of the deleted files is displayed (NN RAW, MM RAW+XMP, etc.).
  • Images in floating point (DNG):
  • normalized images (meaning with a data range 0...1) are supported;
  • uncompressed floating-point images are supported.
  • All RAW formats: due to the reorganization of internal data and changes in internal algorithms (with the goal of optimization), minute differences in the results of auto-white balance and auto-ETTR calculations are possible.
  • This especially concerns Fuji SuperCCD files, for which the changes are especially large.
  • BUG FIXES AND FINALIZATION:
  • The Pause thumbnail decoding while RAW being processed setting was not restored upon pressing Defaults
  • Bugfix: in the case where one performs the following sequence of actions: manually set WB - OK - manually set WB - Cancel; upon pressing Cancel, the WB setting was restored to the WB setting that was active before the first setting of WB manually, that is before the whole sequence started.
  • For pairs of RAW+JPEG, in some instances the eJPEG representation could be discarded from the program memory (but not the eJPEG file itself of course - copy/move worked correctly).
  • Pre-fetch for external JPEGs did not work in all cases.
  • When the Menu - Adjust - Exposure Correction checkbox was not checked and the Use Adobe hidden exposure setting was checked, the first file to be displayed would be shown without applying Adobe hidden exposure.
  • The Grid / Filmstrip - Pause thumbnail decoding while raw being processed setting now controls the processing of the file on which the application was started.
  • In the process of exiting the application, cache cleaning is turned off (performing such cleaning is unnecessary, and it could also lead to a crash during the exit)
  • 4-color non-RGB (CMYG) images:
  • an error in reading saved white balance has been fixed,
  • an error has been fixed where the histogram for the 4th channel was displayed incorrectly
  • CAMERA SUPPORT ADDED:
  • Fujifilm X-T100
  • Pentax K1-II
  • Sony RX100-VI

New in FastRawViewer 1.4.0 Build 1114 RC (May 3, 2017)

  • User Manual and Usage Tips are updated

New in FastRawViewer 1.4.0 Build 1112 Beta (Apr 27, 2017)

  • Sorting and filtering files in a folder:
  • The panel Sort & Filter has been added, to which we have transferred control over the sorting and filtration of files. The following icons are placed at the title bar of this panel (left to right):
  • Filter files by name/mask
  • File Sorting
  • Re-reading the current folder
  • Panel Settings
  • The panel displays filtration parameters, which extend the filtration over ratings/labels that we have in previous versions
  • Sorting: the sorting order can be changed on the fly, supporting all previous methods of sorting, plus sorting by XMP rating. To sort by metadata, which needs to be read from the file (EXIF, XMP), the sorting occurs dynamically and is animated, corresponding to the reading of the current folder. Filtration is controlled by the rest of the new Sort & Filter panel: you can check the chechbox to the left of the sorting and filtering parameter, and only files that pass the filtering conditions will be displayed. In XMP Rating/XMP Label groups, you can set the desired combination of ratings and labels. In the Exif Timestamp group, you can select the necessary ranges of dates. You can edit those ranges if necessary, changing the standard Today/Yesterday/This Week/… tailoring them to your current needs. The number of ranges is fixed. The first value for the range is always “from;” the second is always “to.”
  • If there are any selected files in the folder, you can check the checkbox to the left of the word Selected, and only the selected files will be displayed. In this case, if you unselect some file, it will be excluded from the display, which means that in order to have it displayed again, you need to uncheck Selected and select the file again, after which you can check Selected once more.
  • The filtration inside one group is OR-type. The filtration among groups is AND-type. That is, if, for example, you select XMP Label Yellow and XMP Label Green, files that have either of those two labels will be displayed. If, however, you checked "XMP Rating: 3, XMP Label: Green, and EXIF Timestamp: This week", only the files which conform to all three conditions simultaneously will be displayed.
  • The numbers in the respective lines indicate how many files there are with a given parameter value. If the numbers are in the form nn/mm, mm indicates how many files with the given parameter value are present, while nn indicates how many of those passed through the filters. If only one number is indicated, then all of the files passed through the filters. If the numbers are displayed in italics, the reading of the metadata is still in progress.
  • With standard settings, the metadata (EXIF, XMP) is read only when this data is needed – for Icon display, or when filtering is on. This accelerates the browsing. This can be changed in the preferences by switching off File Handling - Sorting and Filtering - Lazy metadata read
  • Filtration: saving, canceling, and restoring:
  • To save, cancel, and restore filters, use the new File - File filtering in folder submenu, or use the corresponding hotkeys.
  • Disable/Enable file filtering (assigned to V by default) flips the status of filtration: if it’s On, it’s switched Off.
  • The filtering conditions are temporarily stored so that when the filtering is re-enabled, the previous filtering conditions are automatically applied.
  • Remember current file filter (assigned to Alt-V by default) - stores the filtering conditions in a non-volatile fashion.
  • This filtration is preserved and can be recalled through Recall saved filter even after program restart:
  • Recall saved file filter (Ctrl-V) – restores the non-volatile saved filter settings.
  • Filter files by name – turns on/off the filtration of files by filename
  • If the setting File Handling - Reset filtering on folder change is On, Disable file filtering will be automatically triggered when the folder is changed while the filtration is On; the filter settings will be preserved and recallable through the V hotkey.
  • Touchscreen Support:
  • The FastRawViewer version for Windows 7-10 supports the Touchscreen interface. This support is disabled by default; one can enable it via Preferences – Touchscreen – Enable Touchscreen features.
  • Editing the Folder tree:
  • The Folder panel settings now contain a setting to Enable add/rename/remove folders. When this setting is on, the following appears in the context menu for the folders:
  • Create subfolder – creates a new folder and immediately suggests renaming it to something sensible.
  • Rename folder – allows one to rename a folder.
  • Delete folder – allows one to delete a folder (but only if it’s empty and not the current one)
  • If a folder is currently in use by some other application, renaming or deleting it may not be possible; in this case, an appropriate message will be displayed.
  • Drag and Drop to other programs:
  • Drag and Drop from FRV to other programs is always on and can’t be disabled:
  • In Grid/Filmstrip Mode: If a selected file is dragged, then all selected files will be dragged to the same destination.
  • In Grid/Filmstrip Mode: if a non-selected file is dragged, only that file will be dragged.
  • Single view: the currently-displayed file can be dragged if the left mouse button with no modifiers
  • Either has no action assigned, or
  • The standard scroll action is assigned by the zoom level as such that the image is displayed fully in the window.
  • Drag and Drop to Folder tree:
  • Drag and Drop from Grid/Filmstrip/Single View to the folder tree (Folders and Favorite folders panels) is switched on by default, but can be disabled if the checkbox for Enable file drops to folder tree is turned off in the settings for the Folders panel [gear icon]).
  • It is also the place where you can switch on Folder tree auto-expand on drop target selection – in this case, the folders will be automatically expanded when you drag a file to it.
  • The folder which is currently under the drop cursor is automatically highlighted in red.
  • You can not only drop files into the Folders panel, but also into the Favorite Folders panel.
  • With default settings, the dropped file is copied, not moved. FastRawViewer Preferences – Copy/Move/Reject – Drop file(s) to folders tree allows one to select one of the following drop modes
  • Copy w/o prompt – the file is copied; no user confirmation is requested
  • Select copy or move – at each drop action, the user will be promoted to select what to do with the file (copy, move, cancel the action)
  • Move files – the files will be moved, and the request for confirmation is set by the Confirm file move checkbox in the same Copy/Move/Reject pane
  • If this option is selected, and Confirm file move is not set to Always, the user will be additionally warned about the potential problems of moving files with the drop action, and will suggest choosing among following options
  • Proceed with the operation
  • Additionally switch on Move confirmation
  • Switch back to select drop mode each time
  • Other Changes:
  • Processing XMP:
  • The setting XMP - Read rating/label from embedded XMP blocks is obsolete and has to be removed: FastRawViewer will now always read XMP blocks in the framework of reading EXIF information.
  • JPEG files: embedded XMP blocks are read (the same as it is with RAW: if both the XMP block and the sidecar are present, the data with the more recent MetadataDate will have priority)
  • New setting XMP - Write XMP blocks into JPEG files instead of creating sidecars.
  • New setting XMP - Preferred XMP tags for Exposure/WB, controls which XMP tags will be used for white balance and exposure correction
  • New hidden setting AllowRotationWOXMP, which is switched on and off via the scripts EnableRotationWithoutXMP / DisableRotationWithoutXMP (take effect after the program restarts).
  • If the setting is on, the rotation of the image in Fullscreen mode will work, but this rotation will not be recorded, and doesn’t affect the preview in the Filmstrip/Grid.
  • Bugfix: if XMP recording was switched off, the context menu for file(s) displayed actions with XMP (orientation, label, rating). This was not recorded into XMP.
  • The setting XMP - Write Adobe Contrast now depends on the common setting for the group Write Adobe Compatible WB/Exposure/Contrast: if the group is off, then no Adobe processing tags are recorded.
  • The new setting XMP - ratings/labels - Visual Feedback on rating/label change - switches on visual feedback while setting ratings/labels (similar to how it is done in Adobe Lightroom) in Grid and Single Image modes.
  • By default, this is off. When ratings or labels are set through the context menu or assigned to a group, the visual feedback is not displayed.
  • EXIF Processing:
  • EXIF is now displayed in Grid Mode without any additional settings. Correspondingly, the icon for Stats reading has been relocated to the Histogram panel and controls both the histogram and the statistics in Grid mode.
  • EXIF data can now be displayed right in the Grid/Filmstrip above the thumbnail or below the thumbnail.
  • Upon the first start the date that the shot was taken will be displayed in Grid mode and nothing will be displayed in Filmstrip. The settings for Exif data display are accessible through the “gear icon” separately for the Grid and Filmstrip modes.
  • Over/Underexposure Compensation:
  • New setting: Exposure - Use camera linearity limit to detect clipping. If this setting is on, and the camera records the linearity limit in one of the known EXIF tags, overexposure will be indicated for the areas where the pixel values are greater than this limit; overexposure statistics will also be calculated using this limit.
  • The setting Exposure - ISO-based underexposure limit allows one to control the calculation and display of underexposure using three parameters for Underexposure limit for ISO200, for ISO1600, and for higher ISO settings.
  • But Wait, there’s more:
  • New setting Preferences - External Editors - Set custom name. A custom name can be set for each of the external program that you will be using from FRV. This allows one to create customized names for each of the programs listed in the External Editors pane. This is useful when using several programs with the same name, like two different versions of Adobe Photoshop, with the user wanting to easily distinguish between them. As soon as those custom names are provided, they will be displayed in Menu – File – Pass filename to and context menus.
  • Clicking on the GPS coordinate in the EXIF data will open Google Maps in your default browser and drop a pin in said GPS coordinate.
  • In Grid view, previews now occupy (nearly) the entire width of the window if the number of columns in the window is more than three. When you start to make the window smaller, the borders around the icons are made as compact as possible, and when you’ve finished resizing the window, the icons will occupy the whole width of the window
  • The processing of DNG tag PreviewColorSpace has been added.
  • The current folder and the number files (total, displayed, and selected) in it is now displayed above the Grid panel on the same line as the Settings “gear” icon.
  • The processing of damaged files has been improved.
  • New setting Grid/Filmstrip - Apply automatic brightening to thumbnails: designed to help cull very dark shots, including those that may result from ETTR.
  • New setting File Handling - Copy/Move/Reject - Verify file contents after copy: the file resulting from Copy/Move/Reject operation is compared with the original. If the comparison fails, a warning is displayed and the file resulting from the operation is deleted, as it’s obviously damaged.
  • New hidden setting DetectDNGCreatedFromRGB (set via the scripts DisableDetectDNGfromTiff/EnableDetectDNGfromTiff). If this setting is on, DNG files created from regular (RGB, gamma-corrected) TIFF files will be detected by the UniqueCameraModel tag containing “TIFF”.
  • During the reading of the file list, apart from the standard delay (FileArrivalDelay, 2 seconds by default), we also check the file size and file modification time. To prevent attempts to display incomplete files that are on their way to the disc drive, a new file will be displayed in the folder only if its size/modification time hasn’t been changed over two consequent checks.
  • Renamed setting Performance - Re-read folder each nn sec to Check for folder updates each nn sec. Such a name is more to the point because it doesn’t force re-reading of the folder; what is actually set is the time between checking the system folder changed notification (NB: for Network/Removable media, we have separate settings ‘Monitor folder changes’ in FastRawViewer Preferences - File Handling - Removable media); by default, the monitoring of Network and Removable Media is.
  • Bug fixes:
  • When the program was started with the histogram panel switched off, the window for the histogram had the wrong size at the first display.

New in FastRawViewer 1.3.2 Build 937 (Jun 6, 2016)

  • FEATURES ADDED:
  • Context menu for single file displayed in the main window, similar to that in the grid / filmstrip
  • During the first launch of this version of FastRawViewer, a dialogue offering to enable this feature will appear, as previously the right click shortcut was used for Mouse drag
  • Set the Folder tree filtering through Menu - File - Folder tree filter
  • Start folder tree at current folder (Ctrl-T) - limits the display to the current folder and its subfolders
  • Start folder tree at one level up (Ctrl-Shift-T) - limits the display to the folder one level above the current, including subfolders
  • Move folder filter one level up (Shift-T) - will move the "filtration point" up one level
  • Reset folder filtering (Alt-T) - show full folder tree
  • OTHER IMPROVEMENTS:
  • The new setting Interface - Force open folders panel if started without filename, forces the display of the Folders panel: if FastRawViewer was started without specifying the name of the file / folder, or if the specified file / folder can't be opened. By default, this is enabled
  • Improved detection of lenses mounted onto Sony cameras through Sigma MC-11 adapter
  • he new setting Interface - Activate program on file drop with options: None (behavior as 1.3.1), Fullscreen (default), Always. If this option is enabled, passing the file without starting a new copy of FastRawViewer (e.g., by dropping the file onto the program icon in OS X, or in a single instance mode) - FastRawViewer window is activated, that is it is brought to the foreground and gets the keyboard focus. This happens in Fullscreen mode only, if the Fullscreen option was selected above; or in any mode, if the Always option was selected
  • New option File Handling - Copy-Move-Reject - Show progress bar on copy / move / reject: No / Always / Multiple files
  • Substantially improved the performance of batch operations (all of them, but especially of the operation that moves files "one level up", i.e. from a folder / subfolder to a folder).
  • The new hidden setting, DisableRawDecoding (through DisableRawDecoding / EnableRawDecoding scripts)
  • If it is enabled, decoding of RAW data, and subsequently computing and displaying of histograms, statistics, OE / UE is not performed and FastRawViewer behaves as a JPEG / embedded thumbnail viewer.
  • To restore the decoding of RAW data temporarily (without changing the settings / registry / defaults), use the command line switch -enableraw.
  • Thus one instance of FastRawViewer can be used as a JPEG viewer, and another instance can be launched (as an external program) from within this instance as a (single-file) RAW viewer, using a shortcut; given this shortcut has a CMD file containing something like 'FastRawViewer -enableraw %1' assigned to it.
  • New hidden setting, UseGPSStatus, enables/disable GPS Status field check when displaying GPS data.
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Screen sharpening was reset to "minimal state" when changing settings.
  • Current sharpening mode was restored to a wrong state.
  • When switching between folders in the Grid mode, zoom value (when not in Fit to screen mode) could be doubled for each folder change.
  • Fixed the behavior of the program during the browsing to the next (/ previous) file if the current file was moved, while Grid / Filmstrip were not visible.
  • When opening a file located in a folder from the list of Favorite folders (for example, by dropping it onto the program window), FastRawViewer switched to Grid Mode
  • The first file opened from the first opened folder had Copy / Move / Run actions disabled
  • Fixed crash on broken EXIF tags in some cases

New in FastRawViewer 1.3.1 Build 922 (May 12, 2016)

  • Limiting the displayed folder tree:
  • You can right-click on any folder in Folders panel, choose Start folder tree at [foldername] in menu, and the displayed folder tree starts from that folder (and includes its subfolders). An additional panel will appear at the top of the Folders panel, with the (x) and [?] button and the following message: Folder filter On.
  • With default settings, folder filtration is not stored. This can be changed by turning off the following setting: File Handling - Program Startup - Reset folder tree filtering on start.
  • When changing the current folder for any reason (opening a file or folder through any method, unloading the current file) to a folder "beyond the current filter," the filter automatically turns off.
  • Other changes:
  • Program settings, keyboard shortcuts, EXIF settings, and the bottom bar are saved only "immediately after a change" (same behavior as previously), but not when exiting the program. This way, you can use scripts to set hidden settings while FRV is launched, with changes made by the scripts being preserved upon exiting the program (if, of course, the settings weren't changed through Preferences after the script was run) and applied upon the next launch.
  • If the default keys for Grid/Filmstrip navigation (arrows, Home, End, PgUp/PgDn) are assigned to some action, then the Grid/Filmstrip will ignore these keys regardless of the current possibility to perform those actions (for example: if the Undo action is assigned the Up arrow, then in FRV 1.3, if it is possible to Undo, that is the Undo stack is not empty, the Undo action will be performed. If not, then you will navigate through the Grid).
  • Folders Panel: a tooltip with the complete path to a folder has been added.
  • Color Management settings - Color space for Thumbnails: a new ProPhoto variant has been added for the support of several (old?) PhaseOne (and Kodak?) digital backs.
  • The maximum size of a thumbnail which can be read from a RAW file is limited to 128Mb. The maximum size of a file from which a thumbnail will be read is limited to 2Gb.
  • Windows/Folders panel: displays share name for network volumes.
  • Contrast controls buttons are disabled in highlights inspection mode.
  • A check for possible access beyond the file size when reading thumbnails has been added.
  • AVX2 detector: will also check for OS AVX support.
  • Shortcuts Editor: Save button renamed to Export to avoid confusion
  • New statusbar item 'Current file selection status', shows is current file selected or not.
  • Camera support:
  • Canon 1300D
  • Fuji X-Pro2 compressed format
  • Nikon D500
  • Pentax K-1 (incl. pixel-shift mode)
  • Bugs fixed:
  • A bug in the processing of the built-in color matrix for PhaseOne files has been fixed.
  • Bug fixed: external programs #5 and #6 was never listed in context menus.
  • Fixed bug in lossy DNG ('fast load' DNG) processing.
  • Fixed a bug when Move to next if rating set/if label set worked the same way as if rating or label set
  • Fixed bug with files filtering if sort order set to EXIF timestamp

New in FastRawViewer 1.3.0 Build 902 (Apr 27, 2016)

  • WHAT'S NEW:
  • Grid Mode:
  • FRV supports the display of file previews in the main window.
  • Under the default settings, this mode turns on upon starting the program and when switching between folders that are being looked at. In "Grid" display mode, the Filmstrip panel is hidden, if it was in its default position at the bottom of the window. In "grid" mode, the following are accessible (through the menu or the context menu which opens upon right-clicking).
  • - copying, moving, moving to the _Rejected sub-folder.
  • - changing the file orientation.
  • - setting the label/rating.
  • - passing to an external converter.
  • - and, obviously, moving to Single File Mode (double-click, or hit Enter on the file or Menu - View - Switch to single image /press G/).
  • At the top right of the "Grid Mode" window there are three buttons:
  • "statistics" - turns on the display of RAW-histograms, exposure statistics, EXIF data (by default, this is turned off for the sake of file browsing speed)
  • "funnel" - filtration by rating/label. Duplicates the funnel on the Filmstrip panel.
  • "gear" - preview display mode settings (size, how to show the name of the file, rating-label, the tool-tip).
  • Other Grid settings: Preferences - Grid/Filmstrip.
  • Operations with several files:
  • When displayed in a Grid and in the Filmstrip panel, files can be marked by:
  • - Ctrl-Click.
  • - Set a checkmark in a checkbox in the upper-right corner of the preview thumbnail.
  • - Through the actions in Menu - Select/Batch.
  • - (De)select, (De)select and move to next.
  • - Select All, Invert Selection, Deselect All.
  • - Select by Rating/Label.
  • - Load/Append selection from file.
  • With a group of marked files, one can preform the following operations (Menu - Select/Batch or the context menu of the selected file)
  • - copying, moving, moving to the _Rejected subfolder.
  • - changing the file orientation.
  • - setting the label/rating.
  • - passing to an external converter.
  • Undo: reversing file operations:
  • The following operations:
  • - All file operations (copy/move/rejected).
  • - All operations preformed with ratings/labels.
  • - Group orientation changing.
  • Default settings:
  • - the depth of the Undo history is 50 steps.
  • - when changing the folder that is being looked at, the Undo history is cleared
  • The settings can be changed in the Preferences - Copy/Move/Reject.
  • Highlights inspection Mode:
  • (Menu - View - Highlights inspection or Shift-H or the 'H' button in the bottom panel). This mode decompresses highlights, compressing the shadows (the opposite of the Shadow boost action), is intended for visual inspection of the highlights when Overexposure display isn't enough (for example, in the case when a formally not-overexposed channel becomes overexposed after white balance is applied to it).
  • Settings: Preferences - Image Display - Highlights inspection:
  • - Gamma decrease: the Highlights Inspection mode turns on the gamma curve (independent of the tonal curve that has been set) with a value of "2.2 minus the gamma decrease"
  • - Decrease exposure by: the current value of the exposure compensation decreases by the indicated value.
  • - Apply UniWB white balance: temporarily turns on the UniWB white balance (all white balance coefficients are set to 1), which allows one to get rid of the highlights that were overexposed because of application of white balance.
  • Sharpening for display:
  • Under the default settings, this is turned on through the 'S' key or the 'USM' button at the bottom of the screen (in the E/D/S group). This is supported only on video cards with Framebuffers support (everything recent), in Direct-X mode, DirectX 9.0c support is needed (meaning that it doesn't work with old Intel chipsets). Two sharpening settings are supported, which can be changed in a cycle - 1st setting is on, 2nd setting is on, sharpening is off. Modes are set in the Preferences - GPU Processing - Screen sharpening.
  • - the check mark on the group turns the sharpening feature on/off.
  • First setting:
  • - Mode: controls how the sharpening is applied; "when the button is pressed" (this is the default) or "always on".
  • - Radius - sets the "mask radius," values starting with 1.0 correspond to Photoshop scale on radius. For the range between 0.1-0.99, the step is a bit less than that of Photoshop.
  • - Amount - this is the "intensity" of sharpening, similar to that of Photoshop.
  • Second setting:
  • - Mode: setting is on or off.
  • - the remaining parameters are like the previous setting.
  • Tone curves (contrast settings) reworked:
  • In the Image Display settings it is now possible to select either between 4 standard "colorimetric" tone curves or to use "Variable Contrast" tone curves. By default, Variable contrast curves are selected, allowing the "Contrast setting on next file" setting and changing the contrast with arrow-shaped buttons at the bottom bar (this replaces the dropdown with the list of tone curves that used to be there in previous versions) or through Menu - Adjust - Increase Contrast (keys: K, Shift-+), Decrease Contrast (Shift-K, Shift--).
  • Variable Contrast allows one to set 11 standard values (from -5 to +5), and 6 "Ultra contrast" values, from U+0 to U+5. Once Variable Contrast is applied, it is recorded to the XMP file the same way as all other parameters:
  • - if the tone curve was changed by the user.
  • - if Force XMP files creation is on, the value of Variable Contrast will be recorded when the file is opened.
  • Compatibility with Adobe RAW Converters:
  • The range of standard values (-5 to +5) approximately corresponds to the Adobe Contrast slider values (-100 to +100). The "Ultra" values correspond to Adobe Contrast values +100, with the Blacks slider being between -20 and -100. To record the fields for Contrast and Blacks in the Adobe-compatible format, use the setting XMP - Adobe compatible Exposure, Contrast and White Balance - Write Adobe-compatible Contrast/Blacks into XMP files If this setting is on, the values for Contrast and Blacks will be recorded in newly-created XMP files and also to existing XMP files with Adobe Process Version set to 2012.
  • Performance:
  • The new Parameter Preferences - GPU Processing - Store all renderings in GPU memory is recommended for discreet video cards with video RAM of 1GB and more. If this parameter is on, all of the representations of the current file (RAW, intJPEG, extJPEG) are stored in video memory, thus making switching between the representations nearly instant.
  • Increased performance due to support of AVX2 commands (works with 64-bit Windows and with OS X)
  • For Intel Core i3/5/7 4xxx/5xxx/6xxx processes, with AVX2 instruction set, the refresh speed for the RAW display when image control parameters (White Balance, Exposure Compensation, etc.) are changed increases by 15-20%.
  • To enable and disable AVX2 support for the processes with this instruction set, the UseAVX2/NoAVX2 scripts can be used.
  • The capabilities of the processor are determined when FastRawViewer is launched, and if AVX2 instruction set is not supported, the code that takes advantage of this instruction set is disabled.
  • Control over concurrent RAW processing:
  • Prefs.ProcessingMaxParallel, can be changed through editing or by launching the SetProcessingMaxParallel script. This is intended to be used on highly multi-cored computers (for example, 2 6-core CPUs with HyperThreading are 24 cores from FRV's point of view): when processing small RAW files on such computers, it may be useful to limit the concurrency to 10 or 15 threads. The default value is 255, that is no more than 255 cores will be used.
  • Camera support:
  • Olympus Pen-F.
  • Fujifilm X-Pro2 (only uncompressed RAW files), X70 and X-E2S.
  • Panasonic ZS-60/TZ81/85.
  • Phase One IQ3 100Mpix.
  • Bug fixes:
  • When the size of the Thumbnails was changed or the Thumbnail cache was purged, the files which were in the queue for Thumbnail extraction are no longer stuck in the queue.
  • A bug in processing of damaged .eip files was fixed.

  • For the filenames that differ in extension only and are located in the same folder:
  • New setting "XMP - Warn if overwrite XMP for file with same name"
  • If it is "on", FastRawViewer will ask user for confirmation before overwriting an XMP sidecar file containing settings for a file with the same name but different extension
  • New setting "XMP - Disable batch XMP operations if files with same name are selected".
  • If it is "on" (default) and the selected files contain filenames that differ in extension only, the batch editing of XMP (setting or changing orientation, labels, ratings) will be grayed out / disabled in Menu - Select/Batch and in context menu.

New in FastRawViewer 1.3.0 RC 3 (Apr 27, 2016)

  • Shift-Click in Grid View/Filmstrip selects a consecutive group of images:
  • The images selected start from the last one whose selection status was changed (using Ctrl-Click or the keyboard), and go up to the one that was Shift-Click'ed.
  • If there is no image whose selection status was changed (like it is in the cases when the folder was moved, or a new working folder was selected), the Shift-Click operation uses the first file instead; the selected range starts with the first file and goes to the one that was Shift-Click'ed.

  • if this setting is off, orientation matching is off (legacy behavior, like in FastRawViewer 1.2.0 and earlier versions).
  • Changes in activation procedure: FastRawViewer 1.2.1 will not prompt for re-activation after updating Windows 10 to version 1511 (note: if one of the earlier versions of FastRawViewer is already activated, re-activation may still be needed).
  • New scripts to set preview decoding priority: ThumbnailDecoderLowPriority, ThumbnailDecoderHighPriority
  • LowPriority – preview decoding and display of previews in the Filmstrip is paused for the time necessary to process the current RAW file and to display it in the main window (default).
  • HighPriority – preview decoding and display is not paused (default behavior in FastRawViewer 1.1.0 .. 1.2.0), the processes may interfere with each other.
  • New camera support: Sony RX1R-II

New in FastRawViewer 1.2.0 Build 719 (Nov 13, 2015)

  • WHAT'S NEW:
  • The graphics subsystem can be switched between DirectX and OpenGL without installing a different version:
  • A technicality, but an important one, so it's first on the list. There are no separate DirectX/OpenGL Windows installers anymore; the graphics subsystem (DirectX/OpenGL) can be chosen without re-installing the program
  • Filtering the file list by the XMP ratings and labels:
  • This can be turned on through Menu - File - Filter Files by rating/label or through the funnel icon on the preview panel bar.
  • The necessary rating/label values should be selected in the dialog that appears (the filter rules work on the logical 'AND' basis, meaning that if both ratings and labels are given, only those files that conform to both conditions are displayed).
  • The first time the filter is turned on for a given folder/catalog, it reads all of the XMP files, with the progress indication displayed in the bottom bar of the program (the running 'reading metadata' message).
  • If the XMP data is changed by an external program while FastRawViewer is open, refresh the ratings and labels in FastRawViewer the standard way: by using the 'gear' icon in the preview panel - choose 'Refresh thumbnails/ratings.'
  • Favorite Folders' Panel:
  • This panel allows one to keep a list of often-used folders, and lets one readily access them. A click on an item (folder) in this list opens the chosen folder in the Thumbnail.. A double-click opens it in the Thumbnails, and loads the first file in the main window.
  • To add a folder: use the context menu in the Folder tree gear icon in the panel header, and choose 'Add current folder to favorites'
  • When you attempt to add a folder that is already in the list, it is moved to the top of the list
  • To clean up the list: the context menu on an element (right-click) allows one to delete that element; or, to clear the entire list, use Menu panel -> 'Clear favorites list'.
  • Sorting the file list by the EXIF Timestamp:
  • For this sorting mode, DateTimeOriginal and SubSecTimeOriginal EXIF tags are used)
  • Can be turned on through Preferences - File Handling - File sort order
  • if this sorting mode is turned on, the first time a folder containing image files is accessed, FastRawViewer will read the EXIF data from all of the files in the folder, and XMP blocks in the files and XMP sidecar files will be analyzed. On slow discs/cards, this reading and analisys might take a while.
  • Files with EXIF timestamps differing by less than a second will be sorted alphabetically.
  • New action Menu - View - Toggle Zoom (default key Z):
  • The zoom level for Toggle Zoom can be set through Preferences - Zoom - Toggle Zoom zoom to; the default value is 100%. Something similar had been implemented in Lightroom, but we did it slightly differently - see manual for details.
  • Minor improvements:
  • New folder panel setting: Shorten long folder names:
  • In the folder tree, long names (more than 12 characters) will be displayed as '5FirstCharacters...5LastCharacters', while the full name of the folder will be displayed as a tooltip.
  • New setting in the XMP Preferences - 'Read ratings/labels from XMP blocks embedded into RAW files' enables the reading of XMP ratings and labels everywhere they are used:
  • XMP rating/label of the current file (XMP Metadata panel, status bar)
  • Filmstrip/Thumbnails panel's rating and label display
  • filtering files by rating and label.
  • If the setting is turned off (default state, for higher filtration speed), then ratings/labels are read only from sidecar files, ignoring data in the XMP block even if it is present in the RAW file.
  • If the setting is turned on, then the default rule for reading other XMP data is used: when embedded and an external XMP blocks both exist, the more recent variant will be used.
  • The 'XMP - Read XMP data embedded into RAW files' item has been removed from the Preferences; the behavior of the program in regards to embedded XMP blocks is now controlled only by the new setting.
  • Windows: new checkbox in the installation program: 'Add FastRawViewer to Open With right click menu for raw/jpeg files'
  • New option for displaying EXIF data: size of the file in megabytes
  • Filmstrip: new hidden (not shown in the Preferences) behavior settings accessible via registry/defaults scripts.
  • WHAT'S CHANGED:
  • Working with white balance:
  • Color Temperature/Color Tint (CCT/Tint) values set through the white balance adjustment dialog are now not calculated twice (first, to white balance coefficients, and then back, to CCT/Tint) when displaying the values for the current WB on the button and when recording those to an XMP file compliant to the Adobe format: the values displayed (and recorded to XMP file) are exact.
  • Note: values that are "set manually" are not kept forever, so if after setting them manually (resulting in Custom white balance) you choose one of the presets, and then go back to the Custom, a recalculation will occur.
  • CCT/Tint calculations for DNG and RAW files from Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Samsung, Sony now take into account the particular camera calibration. The calculated values for these formats/cameras should be practically identical to those in Adobe programs
  • The calculation of CCT/Tint when the color temperature is out of the standard Ill.A - D65 range (2850-6500K CCT) is improved, the calculated CCT values should be practically identical to those in Adobe programs.
  • Reading white balance presets from a RAW file (if those presets are present in the RAW file) Note: if two "neighboring" files from one camera have different sets of presets (for example, the second one is a DNG file not containing any WB presets; in this case FRV will use presets from an internal table), and white balance must be preserved as instructed by the "same camera" setting in Preferences, then
  • a) if possible, a preset with the same type of lighting (name) is used
  • b) if none exists, then a WB that is set as the default "for another camera" is used.
  • Settings for the Global/Local rejected folder were improved in terms of ergonomics.
  • Hidden (not included in the Preferences) settings of folder monitoring for showing/deleting files
  • New XMP setting - 'Warn about XMP writing errors'.
  • If turned on (default), the program will warn of any errors during XMP file recording
  • Preview panel: XMP sidecar files are read for JPEG files (if they exist), ratings and labels are shown in the panel.
  • Menu options which change XMP files (rotation, white balance, exposure correction) have been moved from View to a separate Adjust menu.
  • If the currently opened file is deleted from the folder with an external program, FRV will automatically move to the next file (same as if the file was deleted or moved in FRV)
  • MS Surface/Surface Pro: no additional activation is required after updating the Firmware version (BIOS).
  • You need to re-activate just once again for the new activation scheme to take hold (this re-activation can be done without waiting for the firmware update).
  • Right/Left arrows in Filmstrip/Thumbnails panel always navigate to the next/previous file, even if the current file is in the rightmost/leftmost column of the light table view
  • The number of external programs a user can launch is increased to 10
  • The setting 'External Programs - Check external program presence on startup' (in Preferences), if on (default), causes FastRawViewer to check the availability of all external programs listed in the pane.
  • FILE FORMAT SUPPORT:
  • DNG with a floating point, DNG with Deflate compression, DNG panoramas composed in Lightroom/Camera Raw Support are supported through Adobe DNG SDK.
  • Support for non-compressed NEF format for Nikon Series 1 cameras is added.
  • Support for Pentax K3-II 4-shot mode is added.
  • Can be turned on/off through Preferences - Performance - 'Use all subframes' for Pentax K3-II 4-shot files. Support for 4-shot mode works fairly slowly (since there is now four times as much data), use only if extremely necessary.
  • Support for the un-compressed format of the Sony A7* II cameras is added.
  • Support for Samsung NX1/NX500 12-bit/Normal compression mode is added.
  • More effective support for the .EIP format: thumbnails are loaded much quicker, and significantly less memory is used.
  • CAMERA SUPPORT:
  • BlackMagic URSA
  • Canon EOS M10, PowerShot G5 X, G9 X
  • Leica SL (Typ 601)
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • When sorting by the time of file creation, files with identical (to the second) time of creation are sorted alphabetically and in the proper order.
  • If the program is in the process of switching from the display of the current file to the display of the next file, and command to navigate to yet another file was given through the thumbnails, then the Copy, Move, and Delete Current File actions are not preformed until the transition to the next file is finished.
  • When changing the current folder through the Folders panel, the new file list was not "scrolled back to the beginning", fixed.
  • "Remember last opened file in folder" now works as it should if used together with navigation through Folders/Favorite folders
  • For Windows 10 at HiDPI screens: buttons size in Keyboard Editor is increased
  • After the Keyboard Editor was launched, Menu - File - Run contained Program1 .. ProgramN instead of the names of the actual programs, fixed.

New in FastRawViewer 1.1.1 Build 657 (May 16, 2015)

  • CHANGES:
  • Filmstrip/Thumbnails Panels:
  • New preview size, 75x50 pixels
  • The filename can be displayed in the tooltip
  • Folders Panel:
  • Display of folder and drive icons can be turned off to save space
  • Removable media change monitoring can be turned off
  • Windows: the display of letters for removable drives with no media inserted can be turned off
  • Windows - experimental support for operations with non-mounted volumes (\\NAS\share\path):
  • Preferences - Removable Media - Show unmounted network volumes in Folders panel, this setting will switch on the display of the contents of the current un-mounted volume in this panel (if this setting is Off, the network devices that do not have a drive letter assigned will not be displayed).
  • Such a volume will be displayed in the panel only after an image file (RAW or JPEG) from this volume will be opened using standard actions: Drag-n-Drop, Menu - File - Open, Menu - File - Open Folder.
  • Again, this is an experimental support, it was subjected only to a limited testing. If you encounter any problems, including FastRawViewer crashing, please turn it off.
  • Camera support:
  • Canon: 750D, 760D
  • Leica: Monochrom (Typ 246)
  • Nikon: 1 J5
  • BUG FIXES:
  • If the user cancelled (after a warning) the operation of "Move to _Rejected", new files wouldn't open through the Thumbnail/Filmstrip panel (File-Next File and other "File" actions - continued to work).
  • Fixed bug in EXIF parsing code when parsing broken EXIF data.
  • Windows - fixed FastRawViewer shut-downs caused by the OS's icon and folder provider being buggy or just crashing (the problem was noticed only for the versions of Dell Backup & Recovery released before September2014):
  • The icons built into FRV are used by default in the Folders panel (to use the system icons, go to Preferences - Interface - Use built-in drive/folder icons)
  • The icons built into FRV are used in the FRV (as opposed to system's) file select dialogs (to use system dialogs, go to Preferences - Interface - Use built-in icons in Open File/Open Folder dialogs)
  • During the first start of FRV, it searches for Dell Backup & Recovery - and if it is found, Preferences - Interface - Use system Open File/Open Folder dialogs is turned off
  • Windows: a problem caused by "too intensive monitoring" of removable media is fixed, the strain on removable media is now decreased
  • Windows: the monitoring of removable media on disks A: and B: is turned off by default, these disks are completely ignored.
  • It can be turned back on (may be necessary if you have a card reader on A:/B:, for instance) through switching off Preferences - Removable Media - Disable A: and B: floppy access (this setting in Preferences was created because many users have a floppy controller enabled in BIOS, but no floppy drive physically connected to the controller on the motherboard, and as a result any request to A:/B: can take several seconds; generally, this request occurs during the program start, to check for the presence of a floppy disk in the disc drive).

New in FastRawViewer 1.1.0 Build 636 (Apr 29, 2015)

  • NEW, MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Filmstrip/Thumbnails panel previews the current folder's files. The thumbnails are extracted from the previews built into the RAW files; if the RAW file has no preview (such as with Cinema DNG), then the thumbnail isn't displayed. Aside from the thumbnail, the panel optionally shows the file name, rating, XMP label, title, and description. What exactly is displayed and how it is displayed can be controlled through the 'settings' button (gear) on the panel title.
  • Folder panel with folder tree display, and fast navigation through it.
  • Removable media support (flash cards, etc.):
  • automatic detection of an inserted card, and a possibility to automatically start browsing in the most recent folder.
  • unmounting a card without exiting FRV.
  • If one closes the new panels and restarts FRV, then it will behave as previous versions (doesn't decode previews, does not monitor changed media), correspondingly the performance remains as it used to be.
  • Support of display and editing of XMP/IPTC Title and Description. Displayed on the XMP data panel, can be edited via Alt-D.
  • The color scheme of the informational panels can be tuned through Preferences - Interface
  • NEW, MINOR IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Menu - File - Reveal in Finder (Mac) / Show in Windows Explorer Displays the currently opened file in the file structure
  • Mac: Proxy Icon in the window title, acts like with all Mac programs (the icon can be dragged to other programs; Command-Click displays the menu with the folder hierarchy).
  • New Feature: "File Handling - Open Folder dialog starts at" with the options
  • Current folder
  • One level higher
  • Fixed folder
  • CHANGES:
  • Preferences have been reworked, the new descriptions are available in the documentation.
  • The default manner of starting without specifying a file to be opened is Last Visited Folder.
  • Support of Open Multiple Folders has been removed (obsolete)
  • The default buttons for opening/closing informational panels have been changed; instead of letters, now the F2-F7 keys are used. Old settings will continue to work, until the user resets the settings to defaults.
  • BUG FIXES:
  • XMP recording during switching between the files has been prohibited
  • If a file has both an XMP block inside, and an external sidecar file, and both blocks have the tag xmp:MetaDataDate, then the more recent set of XMP data is used.
  • Processing speed of large folders on slow storage devices (network, removable media) has been significantly increased
  • Bug fix: when changing the sort order of files in a folder, the new order was applied only starting with the next folder; the current one wouldn't be re-sorted.
  • Bug fix: the "XMP Rating Plus' action was applied only if a file already had a rating.
  • NEW CAMERA SUPPORT:
  • Canon: EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R, EOS M2, EOS M3
  • Fujifilm: XQ2, X-A2
  • Nikon: D5500, D7200
  • Olympus: SH-2, TG-4
  • Panasonic: TX70/71/ZS50
  • Pentax: K-S2
  • Samsung: NX500

New in FastRawViewer 1.1.0 Build 624 RC 2 (Apr 25, 2015)

  • NEW, MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS:

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.5 Build 539 (Feb 16, 2015)

  • New Action - Menu - File - Clear _Rejected folder:
  • Allows one to permanently delete (not just send to Trash/Recycle bin) the contents of the _Rejected folder.
  • It will ask again if you are sure, you will need to set the checkmark, and after that the OK button will become active. The second checkbox controls the deletion of Read-Only files.
  • Attention! Mac OS X does not support access control for the FAT file system (memory cards), and all files will be deleted regardless of read-only checkbox state.
  • The Clear _Rejected folder action is unaccessible and invisible in the menu if the _Rejected folder is set as global. A shortcut cannot be assigned to this action.
  • Better handling of external modified folder - Processing situations, when the contents of the current folder are changed by an external program while the user is attempting to navigate to the next/previous file:
  • if all files are deleted (or the current folder is renamed): FRV issues a warning and stops displaying the current file;
  • if some of the files are deleted and the requested navigation to next/previous file is impossible, then: ?if the current file is also deleted, FRV will try to maintain position in the list: if the deleted file was, for example, the 10th, but it is deleted and thus the relative positioning is impossible, FRV will go to the 9th or 11th file, correspondingly (if they exist)
  • b) if the current file is not deleted, but moving forward/back is impossible ( because all files before/after have been deleted) FRV will beep, showing a question mark instead of the current file number, and will forbid moving in the direction where the attempt has been made and proven impossible.
  • New Preference - Other - Use high speed preview for Fujifilm X-Trans:
  • As obvious from the name, this preference speeds up work with X-Trans (at the cost of quality, otherwise the preference wouldn't exist). When first launching and when resetting to default settings, this one will automatically turn on on computers:
  • with processors that are older than Intel i7,
  • for i7 (i3, i5) of the first generation, if the number of cores is less than 4 (hyper-threaded cores are counted in as real).
  • For faster devices, this setting is unnecessary, as the speed is already acceptable with standard unpacking.
  • Minor changes and bugfixes:
  • When copying a file while choosing a folder, the chosen folder will become the second (not first) in the list of Recent folders. The first in the list of Recent folders will remain, as it should be, the current folder.
  • New camera support: Olympus E-M5 Mark-II, including HiRes (64Mpix) files.
  • A bug has been fixed when dealing with poorly formatted Panasonic MakerNotes.
  • Bug fix: after calling up the preference dialog on Mac OS X, some of the informational windows would occasionally disappear.

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.4 Build 530 (Feb 2, 2015)

  • New Actions:
  • Menu - File - Copy to folder (ask destination) (standard hotkey: C)
  • Menu - File - Copy to folder (same destination) (standard hotkey: Shitf-C)
  • Functions analogously to Move to folder, but copies the file instead of moving it. The "Same destination" folder is shared for the Copy and Move actions.
  • Like Move to folder, this function never rewrites a file, if it exists. Like Move to folder and Move to _Rejected, the XMP-file will be copied along with the RAW file, if it exists, and in RAW+JPEG mode, the JPEG file will be copied as well.
  • Global (absolute) _Rejected subfolder:
  • Using Preferences - File Handling - Subfolder for rejected files one can assign not just a subfolder, but an absolute path as well. An absolute path follows the rules below:
  • Windows: absolute paths start with 'C:' (local path, any Latin letter can be used instead of '?') or with '\\' (network paths)
  • The dialog to set the absolute path is not supported, one must type it out manually.
  • New Action: Menu - File - Close File:
  • Stops all background decoding processes; changes the current folder to %HOME%/Pictures (if it exists), or to %HOME%, "closes" the currently opened file.
  • Intended, primarily, to support the proper un-mounting of an external drive (flash card, camera, removable drive, etc).
  • Other changes:
  • EXIF data extraction (exposure, ISO setting, lenses) from the XMP blocks built into the RAW files. As one of the results, we now display Leaf shooting data.
  • The CCT/Tint calculation has been improved, especially for low color temperatures ("warm" light).
  • DXO Optics 10 and Capture One 8 have been added to the list of programs, automatically recognized during the first start of FRV.
  • Added camera support for Panasonic GF7 and Sony A7 II

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.3 Build 522 (Jan 12, 2015)

  • Changes:
  • Support for HiDPI in Windows
  • User control over the font sizes in the bottom bar and in the right column through Preferences:
  • Preferences - Interface - Bottom bar font size
  • Preferences - Interface - Information windows size
  • Added support for new Panasonic camera DMC-TZ70 A.K.A. DMC-ZS50
  • New setting in Preferences: "File Handling - Ignore extensions when file browsing". This setting allows the user to supply a list of file extensions. Files having the extensions listed here: ?will be ignored during file browsing;
  • not displayed in the "Open file" dialogue window.
  • Bugs fixed:
  • EXIF settings: the options "Do not show empty values" and "Show row labels" are now saved correctly. The default setting to show row labels is forced during the first start, overriding the previous status of the setting.
  • The message warning that the trial period is expired is not overlaid with the Splash Screen.
  • Upon the start, the program checks if its window will be visible on one of the monitors; and if not - it will start with the default layout. (That is, if the previous session used a second monitor, which was later unplugged, the program window will be visible).

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.2 Build 503 (Dec 29, 2014)

  • SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:
  • The decoding of lenses from MakerNotes for Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung and Sony cameras, as well as most cameras with fixed lenses. The EXIF/Lens field now looks correct in the majority of cases.
  • New Actions:
  • Menu - File - Open first file in folder (default shortcut Ctrl-Shift-left arrow)
  • Menu - File - Open last file in folder (default shortcut Ctrl-Shift-right arrow)
  • NEW CAMERA SUPPORT:
  • Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver
  • Hasselblad Stellar II
  • Panasonic DMC-CM1
  • Samsung NX1
  • MINOR CHANGES:
  • The new setting 'Use System file/folder open dialog', default is ON. If you turn it off, a different (more compact) dialog is used when opening files
  • Windows) The new setting 'Other - Faster program close', is intended for the very rare cases when FastRawViewer's process is not completed in a reasonable amount of time
  • When attempting to open a file, the reading of which is not allowed because of the standard permissions (access rights) setting, a warning is issued
  • When flipping to a file, the reading of which is forbidden (through permissions or the Access Control List), "no permission for reading" is added to the list of reasons for not opening a file
  • Debug log: different buttons for copying "as text" and "as html" to clipboard, to allow more flexibility while choosing the program for paste operation
  • Alt-letter hotkeys have been added for access to the main/upper menu. If an analogous shortcut is added for access to some function of the program (through the Keyboard Shortcuts editor), then it will have priority over the upper menu. Therefore, when using the standard keyboard layout, there is no fast access to the Window menu, since the Alt-w command is assigned to the manual white balance setting tool
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Exposure correction: Autoexposure - autoexposure did not work for the first file opened in the session.
  • Exposure correction: Keep from prev. file: On the first RAW file during the session (if it doesn't have exposure correction saved in XMP) No Correction was always applied (but taking into account the Adobe hidden correction setting)
  • Kodak DCS ProBack: In several cases, the preview ("Internal JPEG") of the file was incorrectly decoded.

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.1 Build 488 (Dec 5, 2014)

  • CHANGES TO AUTOEXPOSURE CONTROL:
  • New setting Image Display - Apply Adobe hidden exposure correction:
  • If this setting is "on" (default):
  • Exposure correction is aligned with the one that is indicated in Adobe converters (that is Adobe Baseline exposure compensation is added),
  • If the exposure correction is set to zero or is "off", the brightness of the image is aligned to the brightness to the Adobe converters with the exposure correction set to zero.
  • The setting Keep exposure correction on next file is replaced with the following:
  • Exposure correction on file open:
  • No correction (default) - if selected, no exposure correction is applied
  • Autoexposure - if selected, Automatic exposure correction is applied
  • Keep from prev. file - if selected, the exposure correction is inherited from the previous file (for the first file in session exposure correction is set to zero).
  • New setting does not allow to fully emulate the behavior of previous versions for the case if automatic exposure correction for the first file + "keep correction on next" were in use; to handle this, please press Shift-A once in working session (on first file).
  • Automatic exposure correction logic reworked and enhanced:
  • New settings in Preferences - Image display
  • for Automatic exposure correction:
  • Fixed exposure shift - if selected, a fixed exposure correction is applied (Adobe hidden exposure compensation is added to the value)
  • ETTR-style autoexposure (shift histogram to the right) - if selected, the Auto Exposure correction is calculated so that the histogram is shifted to the right.
  • to control the ETTR-style Auto exposure you can set the limit:
  • Unlimited - no limit
  • Hard limit - a hard limit
  • Virtual ISO (default) - soft limit, which depends on the ISO setting at which the image was captured.
  • Settings for Adobe Exposure Difference are moved from XMP tab to Exposure tab:
  • Replaced: Use Builtin Adobe/FRV exposure difference when possible and Adobe/FRV exposure difference for other files
  • With: Image Display - Override Adobe exposure correction to NN EV
  • Most likely you don't need this setting because all the offsets for the exposure correction between Adobe convertors and FRV for the cameras that are supported by Adobe are already in FRV.
  • If you want to preserve the legacy ("FRV 1.0" and earlier) behavior, please do the following:
  • Disable Apply Adobe hidden exposure correction
  • Set Exposure correction on file open to Autoexposure or Keep from prev. file
  • OTHER CHANGES:
  • The setting for Image Zoom on next file is moved to Interface tab
  • For OS X Color Management is enabled by default
  • The description of the system monitor profile is displayed in Preferences - Color Management
  • Deleted settings
  • Start in fullscreen
  • Remember maximized window state
  • The program now starts with the screen size it had previously. The last size of the program window before going to fullscreen/maximize is stored in the settings
  • Increase exposure: shortcut Alt+= is added
  • New setting for EXIF display window: Show row labels (enabled by default)
  • If it is turned off, only the values from EXIF will be shown and the names (like Shutter, Aperture, etc.) will be omitted. This is intended for the case when only few fields from EXIF are displayed and their meanings are obvious without annotations

New in FastRawViewer 1.0.0 Build 482 (Dec 3, 2014)

  • FastRawViewer is now shareware with a 30-day trial period.
  • Added interfaces for program activation the program and license status display
  • Additional verification of duplicate hotkeys on program start.
  • FRV window do not accept file drag-n-drop until program initialization completes.

New in FastRawViewer 0.9.5 Build 470 Beta (Nov 24, 2014)

  • New features and major changes:
  • New setting Image Display - Under/Overexposure layer opacity Allows to change the brightness of OE/UE highlighting.
  • New control button in XMP Rating/Label window: Move to next file after Rating/Label/Any is set.
  • Usage Tips: the answers to most frequent questions. Those are displayed at program start, can be switched off through a checkbox in Tips window and activated using Help - Usage Tips.
  • If the program is started without parameters, the splash screen is displayed; this can be switched off using Preferences - Other - Disable splash screen
  • New setting Interface - Zoom step (for shortcut):
  • Large (as in previous versions) - about 50% (fixed enlargement scale)
  • Medium - 20%
  • Small - 5%
  • These settings are intended to be used when zooming is controlled through mouse wheel or trackpad. The setting affects zooming shortcut only (keyboard/mouse/trackpad zoom controls); while zoom-in and zoom-out using bottom bar buttons is always using the Large steps with fixed scale.
  • New setting Interface - Ignore successive wheel events for NNN msec (by default, 0 msec for Windows, 200msec for OS X) This setting allows to fine-tune the behavior of Magic Mouse and trackpad, which, on OS X, tend to send too many fine-grained events.
  • OS X: Shift+Wheel zoom shortcut is off by default.
  • New group of settings Image Display - Use embedded color data for Controls the use of color matrices embedded in raw files:
  • DNG (default: Off; FRV color profiles are used instead)
  • Raw files coming from Leaf è Phase One cameras/digital backs (default: On)
  • Other raw files that contain color matrices: default: Off
  • New action 'Return from Fullscreen'; default: assigned to Esc key.
  • Installation and file type association:
  • FastRawViewer adds itself to 'Open With' list for the supported file types / extensions.
  • FastRawViewer adds itself to Folder right click menu.
  • During the installation the user can set the checkmark to add FastRawViewer to Desktop right-click menu.
  • The button Preferences - Other - Manage file associations starts the system file association dialogue. (this button is absent in Legacy version)
  • New camera support:
  • Panasonic DMC-GM5
  • Leaf Credo 50
  • Bugs fixed:
  • For some raw files with very flat but not overexposed highlights the OE indication was triggered
  • If a DNG file contained only ColorMatrix1 the setting of color temperature through CCT/Tint was not working
  • OS X) If the start mode was set to 'Last Opened file' but the start was triggered by dropping a different file onto the program icon the file opened was the last one instead the one that was dropped
  • Zoom anchor at mouse cursor was not working for "100% zoom" (even if "100% zoom" was assigned to mouse)
  • The window title was not changed when switching between RAW and JPEG
  • If the last browsed folder was deleted or moved, the program, if started without pointing to a file/folder, switched to browsing through %HOME%/Pictures (if it exists) or %HOME%, instead of program folder

New in FastRawViewer 0.9.4 Build 441 Beta (Nov 3, 2014)

  • NEW FEATURES AND MAJOR CHANGES:
  • The EXIF data display is now customizable
  • Press the "Settings" icon at the top of the EXIF window and change the opacity and the list of displayed EXIF fields as you see fit
  • The program's status bar (the one that is below the image display window) has been completely reworked:
  • All visual elements for which it makes sense are now clickable
  • You can tune which elements are always there, which are there only when there is enough space to accomodate them, and which are currently switched off
  • New elements have been added: Current Folder, Contrast Curve selection, XMP Rating, and XMP Label
  • Color Management Support:
  • Color Management can be turned on through: Preferences - Color Management - Enable Color Management
  • With this, additional settings are made available.
  • Color Conversion (to the monitor space) is performed on the video card; in most cases the speed of the program is not affected.
  • However:
  • Color Management is incompatible with DirectX Shader Model older than 3.0; on such video cards, it cannot be turned on.
  • Color Management is incompatible with "anisotropic texture filtering (for all programs)" being manually turned on. If this type of filtering is found, a warning will pop up.
  • Simultaneous opening of several folders:
  • This mode is intended for skimming through several "folders at the same level", for instance in the case where the camera records shots in numbered sub-folders, which are then moved to the computer (as is, without flattening the folder structure).
  • If necessary, folders on different levels/discs/wherever can be opened through Drag-n-Drop; the built-in FRV dialog by itself does not allow this liberty.
  • This is, specifically, a crutch; this mode does not replace automatic recursion through catalog, but covers one important and widespread Use Case
  • New File Handling Setting - Open Multiple Folders support (turned off by default)
  • This mode is indicated by a star on the "file number in current catalog" button.
  • When flipping Next File, if you have reached the last file in the folder, the current folder is stored at the top of the list of "previous folders" and the program proceeds to the first folder taken from the list of "next folders"
  • When flipping Prev File, if you had earlier moved to the "next" folder, you can return to the last of the "previous folders"
  • Putting back files moved to _Rejected within the program is now only possible until you have not changed folders; if, however, you changed the folder, you can use any file manager to put the files back.
  • MAJOR CHANGES:
  • The logic of XMP processing has been changed
  • XMP files are not created for JPEG files
  • New XMP setting - Read Only XMP:
  • ratings, marks, exposure settings are read, changing ratings/marks is forbidden, changes in exposure and white balance are not saved to XMP. Also, exposure and white balance are read from XMP (if they are present).
  • New XMP setting - Use XMP Reject Rating (turned off by default).
  • Automatically turns on when turning on the 'Adobe Bridge' mark mode, as it is the only program that supports XMP Reject
  • Automatic "FRV/Adobe exposure offset" compensation has been implemented for a large number of cameras (400+)
  • New Setting "Use built-in Adobe/FRV exposure difference data when possible" (standard value - turned on).
  • Mac: digital signature is compatible with OS 10.9.5 and 10.10, the system should not complain now.
  • Windows: distributive build method has been changed. Now:
  • Standard 32-bit version is compatible with Windows Vista - Widows 10, and does not require DirectX updates if the installed version is DX9
  • Standard 64-bit version is compatible with Windows 7 - Windows 10 and does not require DirectX updates
  • For users of Windows XP (and 64-bit Vista), a legacy version is being built, compatible with this (and newer) systems
  • NEW CAMERA SUPPORT:
  • Canon: 7D Mark II, SX60 HS, G7 X
  • Fujifilm X30
  • Kodak S-1
  • Leica D-Lux (Typ 109), V-Lux (Typ 114)
  • Nikon D750
  • Panasonic DMC-LC100
  • Sony ILCE-QX1
  • MINOR CHANGES:
  • The separate window with keyboard help has been eliminated. Instead of it, F1 opens a browser with all current shortcut settings. Can be printed.
  • New settings
  • Other - Downscale JPEGs larger than NN Mpix
  • Other - Do not Decode RAW files larger than NN Mpix
  • Intended, primarily, for users of the 32-bit version. Better that a downsampled JPEG is displayed, than the program panic that it is running out of memory.
  • Defaults are reasonable: 16/40Mpix for 32-bit version, 64/100Mpix for 64-bit.
  • Windows) When starting up the 32-bit version on a 64-bit system, once a week the version will offer upgrading to a 64-bit version.
  • New Interface setting - Zoom anchor at mouse cursor
  • Takes into account the position of the mouse cursor when zooming: the point which the mouse is on while zooming stays under the cursor.
  • The setting is on by default.
  • New option for frequency of update checks: Never :)
  • New setting "Remember maximized window state": off by default
  • New Interface setting - "Always show OE+Corr column in statistics window"
  • Does exactly what it says.
  • Intended for the case when you are rapidly looking through statistics for a large number of files; the table stops jittering, changing size, and you can compare easier and faster.
  • New contrast (tone) curves High Contrast and Ultra Contrast
  • The possibility of setting the exposure change step to 1/12EV has been added
  • Updated color profiles for a large number of cameras.
  • The status bar always differs from the main window in brightness.
  • FIXED BUGS:
  • When changing XMP Label styles, the names of the menu items did not change.
  • The quantity of the simultaneous processes of RAW decoding is always set less than the size of the decoded RAW cache.
  • When using Zoom+Pan, if moving the cursor outside the borders of the image window and releasing the mouse button, a context window with visibility choices for Dock Area windows would pop up. Does not happen anymore.
  • When turning on the "Restore View settings on start" settings, the Focus Peaking modes would not be restored.
  • The lower part of the histogram was not seen when showing the histogram in the floating window.
  • Changing the settings does not cause the display of an XMP ratings window
  • If changing the settings required re-opening the current file, then the currently displayed representation is used (one of raw-intJpeg-extJpeg)
  • Faster program start in several cases: update check does not configure the proxy setting during the program start.
  • The Startup Folder and Display Profile values set by the user are not lost when Reset Prefs to defaults is pressed.
  • The message about the impossibility of compilation of all shaders has been fixed; the program no longer crashes here.
  • The order of inner actions during start-up has been changed. Now the situation that, when a file (passed, perhaps, through the commandline) is already loaded and an attempt is made to display it while the graphic subsystem is not ready yet, is no longer possible.
  • In the dialogues to select file by number and for manual white balance entry were closed by pressing Escape, the action "Hide All windows" has been disabled.

New in FastRawViewer 0.9.3 Build 361 Beta (Oct 1, 2014)

  • NEW FEATURES AND MAJOR CHANGES:
  • XMP and other metadata:
  • Saving of .rpps-files is now supported (.rpps files are settings for RawPhotoProcessor). New settings:
  • Preferences - Other - Write RPPS files - saves an .rpps file if manual changes of WB/exposure are applied to the image
  • Preferences - Other - Force RPPS files creation - saves an .rpps file with automatic settings for WB/Exposure when a RAW file is opened.
  • If a RAW file is moved to a different folder the respective .rpps file is also moved to the same folder.
  • To use the .rpps files created in FastRawViewer in RawPhotoProcessor, you need to use the dialogue Import Multiple settings from Menu - Settings. In the dialogue, choose all files in the folder (RAW and .rpps), and the contents of the .rpps-files will be recorded into RPP's History.
  • New setting:
  • XMP - Adobe process version for newly created XMP files. Default: 2012, can be set to 2010 or 2003. Features:
  • If the tag crs:ProcessVersion is set already in XMP file, the version doesn't change and the exposure is written according to the version.
  • If the ProcessVersion tag isn't present in XMP file, then it's added in accordance to the setting (this way, XMP-files created in older versions of FRV and then not changed by ACR/LR will be "upgraded");
  • For 2012 process, Exposure2012 (equal to expo correction in FRV plus Adobe Shift) and the tags Contrast2012, Whites2012, Blacks2012 (set to 0, if these tags are not present in the file) are recorded;
  • For the 2003/2010 processes the tags crs:Exposure, crs:Brightness, and crs:Contrast are recorded (if the file already had the values for those tags, they are preserved, otherwise they are set to 0).
  • New checkmark in the XMP Rating/Label window: Move to next file after Rating is set:
  • Does what is written - if the checkmark is checked, then after setting XMP Rating (button in the XMP window, Label menu, hotkeys) FRV browsers to the next file. The behavior of increasing/decreasing the rating (menu, hotkeys) has stayed the same: when using these actions browsing to the next file doesn't happen .
  • New setting XMP - Write photoshop:Urgency tag with color labels (for PhaseOne C1):
  • Turns on the recording of the XMP-tag photoshop:Urgency, which is used by CaptureOne to set color labels.
  • The setting is activated only if the mode XMP labels is set in 'Color Labels' (this is the default). In other modes, the XMP Labels photoshop:Urgency tag is not modified: if it was in the XMP file, it stays unchanged.
  • FRV Start/Shutdown:
  • New setting in File Handling - Start without filename:In the case of FRV being started up over a particulare file (through any method: drag-n-drop on the icon, clicking on the file, associated with FRV), this setting is, of course, ignored.
  • This setting is also ignored in the Single instance mode, if the second FRV copy is started up without selecting the name of a file/folder, then nothing happens.
  • Empty Screen - FRV starts up "without file".
  • Last opened file - opens the top (last) file from the Recent Files list
  • Last visited folder - opens the folder from the list of Recent Folders (from this folder opens either the first file, corresponding to the current file sorting settings, or the last opened, if the 'Remember last opened file in folder' is set)
  • Specified folder - allows you to set a "start folder".
  • New setting Image Display - Restore last View settings on program start
  • When closing the program the following image display parameters are saved (independent of the status of the settings):
  • Display mode (RGB, per-channel, BW Conversion)
  • Focus Peaking mode
  • Boost Shadows mode
  • Exposure correction on/off
  • Over/Underexposure display mode
  • If 'Restore last View settings' is turned on, then during the next start-up of the program, the above-listed parameters will be in effect.
  • Browsing files:
  • New setting File Handling - File sort order,
  • it sets the order of file selection when browsing through the files.
  • Variants:
  • Filename, alphabetical - by filename, in alphabetical order, without accounting for letter case, accounting the current localization settings (like with previous FRV versions)
  • Filename, reversed - the order is opposite to the previous.
  • Modification time, newest to oldest - sorts the files by date of creation/last modification of the files, new files in the top of the list
  • Modification time, oldest to newest - the order is opposite to the previous.
  • File type (extension) - files are sorted by extension, files with the same extension are sorted alphabetically.
  • Autoexposure:
  • Added Image Display - Auto exposure limit to effective NNN ISO setting.
  • The point of it is that the limit of automatic (positive) exposure correction depends on the sensitivity at which the current photo was taken. For instance, if the current file was taken at ISO400, and the auto limit is at 6400 (default value), then the auto-exposure will not brighten the image by more than (6400/400 =) 16 times, or 4 EV.
  • SMALL CHANGES:
  • Manual exposure adjustment: When manually changing the exposure, rounding occurs to the nearest value that is a multiple of the 'Manual exposure step'.
  • The 'group RAW+JPEG', 'Ignore internal JPEGs', and 'Default image to Display' settings are moved to the separate RAW+JPEG Preferences tab
  • When displaying a single JPEG or RAW file for the cameras where RAW display is not supported, the "current expo correction" field is blank.
  • If for some reason EXIF data cannot be extracted from the RAW file, an attempt is made to extract it from the EXIF data from the embedded JPEG preview.
  • Windows: When using the 'Single Program Instance' the copy of the program which is launched to display the file activates its own window (it is shown on top of other programs and becomes and active application).
  • Statistics table: underexposure statistic is now to the left, overexposure to the right, like it is on the histogram.
  • Windows/DX9: If it works, Windows/DX9 version leaves the record in the Registry confirming that it actually works. Starting with the next version of FRV, the installer will check for the presence of this record, and will not suggest to update DX9 if the record is there.
  • XMP Setting - Write Compact XMP is deleted (the problem that it was meant to solve is of a different nature).
  • Work with formats, for which RAW display is not supported (Foveon): Embedded JPEG 'is displayed instead of RAW'. As a result: - The 'ignore internal JPEGs' and 'do not show internal JPEG if external JPEG is present' settings are ignored - In the RAW+JPEG mode and when an external JPEG is present, the command JPEG rotate causes a change to 'embedded JPEG'.
  • BUGS FIXED:
  • Bug fixed: after sleep/awake, the Focus Peaking mode was not restored.
  • "Pink highlights" display has been improved for cameras, which have a true maximum lower than stated (Canon, some copies of Blackmagic)
  • Bug fixed: when moving the last file in a folder to _Rejected, the list of rejected files was cleared, and then irretrievable.
  • Bug fixed: when Preferences were reset the setting for the external program #2 was lost.
  • LIBRAW:
  • Bug fixed: If a DNG-files uses a tonal curve, and the DefaultCrop area was selected, the curve would not be applied outside the borders of the Default Crop Area.
  • Old Sony camera display fixed (blown out highlights don't have magenta cast)
  • Exposure EXIF-data: when the file has the ShutterSpeedValue and ExposureTime tags, preference is given to the second (it contains more familier rounding of the values)
  • A series of bugs in the interpretation of DNG-files that come from Adobe DNG Convertor have been fixed (Has to do with, mainly, very old cameras).
  • New Camera Support
  • Casio EX-100
  • Hasselblad H5D, HV
  • Nikon D810, 1 J4,1 S2
  • Olympus E-PL7
  • Panasonic DMC-FZ1000, AG-GH4
  • Pentax 645Z
  • Samsung NX3000
  • Sigma dp2 Quattro (FRV only shows the embedded JPEG, like for all Sigma cameras)
  • Sony A7S, RX100-III, A5100

New in FastRawViewer 0.9.2 Beta (Oct 1, 2014)

  • Windows/32 bit: 'Remember last opened file in folder' setting works now.
  • Updates check:
  • the update date was recorded only if the the update notification was received.
  • with the 'Updates check frequency: On program start' enabled the updates are checked no more than once in 6 hours.

New in FastRawViewer 0.9.1 Beta (Oct 1, 2014)

  • Defaults for RAW decode threads: no more than 6 threads for a 32-bit system, no more than 8 for a 64-bit
  • New setting: XMP->Write 'compact' XMP format (default is off):
  • if the setting is on, FRV will write XMP in compact Adobe Format (e.g. xmp:Rating="1");
  • if the setting is off, full XMP format will be used (e.g. 1).
  • New setting: Interface - Hide bottom window bar when hiding information windows.
  • Complex setting with complex behaviour 'Start in full screen if ....' replaced by simple 'Interface-Start in full-screen'.
  • Improved white balance for some cameras.
  • Camera support: added Samsung NX mini and Sony ILCE-3000 (A3000)
  • Bugs fixed:
