FileBoss Changelog

What's new in FileBoss 3.004

Aug 17, 2015
  • The most obvious improvements implemented in Version 3.004 is a reduction in excessive flicker when switching back and fourth between tabs and a better, and more standard, experience when selecting and dragging files and folders.
  • Visual and other Improvements:
  • 3.004 is a small release that will make a big difference for some, especially those running systems on which FileBoss
  • produced a great deal of flicker when switching between tabs
  • was slow to react to drag operations when first started
  • displayed a bouncing cursor when dragging a large number of objects
  • would not drop files properly on Microsoft Outlook and some other programs
  • would sometimes fail to perform recursive versions of Clean Folders, Change Attributes, and some Rename operations. They now work correctly from either window.
  • would not allow dropping files on some programs such as Microsoft Outlook.
  • did not always recursively process files in subfolders when Cleaning Folders, Change Attributes and some Rename routines depending on how the top level folder was selected.
  • would not export file lists with names in such languages as Chinese, Russian, Arabic or any language other than English and most European languages.
  • Drag & Drop:
  • A Drag & Drop action can now be started by clicking on a selected file anywhere on the row. Previously only clicking on the Name column would allow initiating a drag action.
  • When dragging a large number of files around FileBoss the cursor is now steady where before it would sometimes quickly flash between a drag cursor and a busy cursor.
  • In addition, dragging to select files can not be started by clicking anywhere on a row of an unselected entry.
  • Under some circumstances FileBoss would not allow files to be dropped on other programs such as when dropping image files on Microsoft Outlook. This has been corrected.
  • Recursive Actions:
  • FileBoss did not always recursively process files in subfolders in actions such as Cleaning Folders, Change Attributes and some Rename routines. Whether or not this happened could appear to be random but depended on how the top level folder was selected.
  • Cancelling Recursive Actions:
  • All recursive processing can now be cancelled by clicking the ESC key. In addition while the actions is being performed a gyrating progress bar is displayed in the lower-left corner of the main status bar.
  • Main Toolbar:
  • Although it looks the same, the main toolbar has changed fundamentally. It is now possible to remove it completely which means that all toolbars and the main menu can now be removed for special situations. When all the interactive command elements are gone (toolbars and menus) you can get them back by right-clicking over the contents window of any tab and selecting Customize Layout from the popup menu as show to the left.
  • The Actions Toolbar is Back:
  • The Actions toolbar is back and turned on by default. On new installations or when FileBoss is started in reset mode the Actions toolbar will appear at the bottom of FileBoss's window. Of course you can always right-click over any other toolbar and select Action to toggle whether or not it is displayed.
  • Available Notes (Scratch) File:
  • A simple way to call up a special notes file from most anywhere in FileBoss (from the main window and from most dialogs) is available. Press F12 to bring up a simple text file in the default text editor for you system. You can also select which file to use with the Tools > Select Notes File... command from the main menu.
  • The default file is FileBossNotes.txt located in your Documents folder. But it doesn't have to be a txt file. If you want a Word document just select or create a file with a .doc or .docx extension. The same applies for other types of files.
  • This is a very simple feature that may be expanded in the future depending on what people would like it to do so let us know if it is useful and how you would like it expanded.

New in FileBoss 3.0 (Aug 17, 2015)

  • Classic Dual Pane (Dual Tab) Mode:
  • Optional, classic Dual Tab mode. Just click the Dual button and FileBoss will take care of the rest. When Dual Tab mode is on you can quickly copy from one tab to the other using the Tabs private toolbar.
  • And you can compare the two tabs and even link them together so when you move to a new folder the other tab moves too.
  • Unicode Compatible:
  • Complete compatibility with Unicode allowing the program to work seamlessly with any living language including Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and all other languages supported by Windows.
  • Improved Drive Button Bar:
  • The old drive Bar
  • The old drive bar (with the square yellow buttons) showed every installed drive including CD/DVD drives and flash card readers even if they were empty. In the example to the right drive E:\ and F:\ are empty CD/DVD drives, G:\ is an empty Blu-Ray drive and drives L:\, M:\ and N:\ are empty flash card readers.
  • The new drive Bar
  • The new drive bar in version 3.x (with the round green buttons) only displays drive that are in use i.e., that have media. In the image to the right the empty drives (E:\, F:\, G:\, L:\, M:\ and N:\) no longer have buttons representing them. But as soon as a CD or flash media is inserted FileBoss will detect it and display the appropriate button automatically.
  • Drive button bar with I:\ drive activeThe new drive bar also displays the which drive the active tab (the tab that has the focus) represents as shown to the right where the folder in the tab is on drive I:\.
  • New quick-access buttons
  • There are two new buttons on the version 3.x drive bar.
  • The first is the Network button designated by the two backslashes (\\). Like the drive buttons the Network button keeps track of folders you have visited but instead of a local drive it remember network shares. This button can really speed up access to shared folders on your network as compared to navigating through the Network folders on the left.
  • The second is the Folders button at the far right. Clicking this button quickly toggles the display of folders in the window on the right side of the tab. As it can be toggled on and off a will depending on what you need to do at any given moment or according to the composition of the folder you are viewing.
  • Version 2.6 Drive Bar when cursor is hovered over a drive buttonAnother improvement is that when the cursor hovers over a drive a tool-tip is displayed that shows the amount of free space available on that drive.
  • Prevent Network and/or Virtual Folders Opening on Startup:
  • If FileBoss is slow starting up because it is trying to access slow network resources or performing lengthy searches that were present when it was last closed you can now tell FileBoss not to reload those kinds of tab by preventing network folders and/or virtual folders from being loaded when FileBoss starts up. These new options override any other options on the Startup options panel.
  • To access these options use the Edit > Options > Program Options... command from the main menu.
  • New Toolbar Tips:
  • Fuller help when hovering the mouse over a toolbar button. A great way to find out what some of the possibilities are within FileBoss.
  • Tab Groups Now Remember Orientation:
  • Tab Groups now remember whether they were horizontal or vertical when FileBoss was last closed. And FileBoss remembers the last setting so if only one Tab Group is present and a new one is created it will have the same orientation as the last time there were more than one Tab Group present. (Previously multiple tab groups always defaulted to the vertical layout.)
  • New Tab Group Menu Items:
  • The Tab Group menu item has been optimized. And it is now located under the new New top level menu item instead of the Windows menu item where it was in V2x.
  • How to Create a New Tab Group:
  • Main Menu
  • Select Window > Tab Groups > [desired option] to either move the current tab to a new tab group or move it to an existing tab group.
  • Right click over tab
  • Right-click over a tab and select the type of tab group you want to create, or if there are already multiple tab groups the option to move it to the next or previous tab group.
  • Drag & Drop (sort of)
  • You can quickly move a tab to a new tab group or move it to an existing tab group by clicking over the tab and, while holding the left mouse button down dragging it down to anywhere in either the Navigation or Contents window pane.
  • Release the mouse button and a small popup menu will appear from which you can select what to do with the tab.
  • Admin Shares:
  • You can also turn the display of Admin Shares on and off from the Explorer Views panel of the program options dialog. Use the Edit > Options > Program Options... command from the main menu and then select the Explorer Views panel from the list on the right to get to this option.
  • Anomalies and, yes, Bugs:
  • Searching for Folders - No Trailing Dot Needed
  • Miscellaneous:
  • Copy Settings Remembered
  • Fixed bug where some of the settings in the copy dialogs were not saved correctly between FileBoss sessions. Most notably were settings for drag and drop operations.
  • Help Guide
  • Improved various small appearance settings
  • Text Search
  • Improved matching when searching for long text strings.
