ExifToolGUI Changelog

What's new in ExifToolGUI 5.16.0.0

Sep 22, 2015
  • Bug fixed shifting some date/time values.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.15.0.0 (Sep 22, 2015)

  • Bug fixed where sub-directories with names containing a dot could be processed when processing the parent directory.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.14.0.0 (Jun 6, 2012)

  • Bug fixed for Import GPS data from Log files -in all cases, files weren't geotagged and message "No file specified" was shown.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.13.0.0 (Jun 1, 2012)

  • Bug fixed for ExifTool direct: option -r (recursive) didn't work. I assume this happened after some of my work was lost because of disk failure.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.12.0.0 (May 31, 2012)

  • Bug fixed for Preferences option save Filelist Details state on exit.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.11.0.0 (May 23, 2012)

  • Bug fixed for Copy metadata from single file menu:
  • if source filename contained "foreign" characters, then such file was not found by ExifTool.
  • Improved: now GUI remembers if closed in maximized window state.
  • Changed: Number of displayed predefined ET direct commands increased from 8 to 16 lines.
  • Added two buttons to ExifTool direct panel:
  • [Default] -sets currently selected predefined command to be selected by default each time GUI starts.
  • [Deselect] -resets predefined commands combo-box line to "nothing selected".

New in ExifToolGUI 5.9.0.0 (Mar 27, 2012)

  • Changed usage of -r option in ExifTool direct: now, if -r option is specified, directory selected in Browse panel ("working" directory) is automatically used as top directory and all files/subdirectories inside top directory will be processed (unless not filtered by -ext option). This change eliminates need to specify target (top) directory.
  • Example: -r -Xmp:all=
  • deletes all Xmp metadata from all files inside currently selected folder and subfolders.
  • Example: -r -Xmp:City=Paris -ext jpg
  • set Xmp:City tag value to Paris for all jpg files inside currently selected folder and subfolders.
  • Bugfix: Menu Export/Import>Copy metadata into JPG or TIF files didn't executed even if JPG or TIF file was selected.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.8.0.0 (Mar 19, 2012)

  • Chart panel (for Focal length, Aperture and ISO) implemented.
  • Menu option Import/Export>Copy metadata into all JPG or TIF files added -for copying metadata from multiple (sub)directories.
  • Some other menus renamed from "Import metadata..." to "Copy metadata..."

New in ExifToolGUI 5.7.0.0 (Mar 6, 2012)

  • Option added in Preferences:
  • Workspace: move focus to next tag/line after value is entered. (checked by default)
  • Fixed: Preview image disappeared after user saved tag value changes in Metadata panel.
  • Added menu option Workspace definition file Load/Save which allows loading previously saved Workspace tags back into Workspace.
  • Two predefined Workspace ini files included in package.

New in ExifToolGUI 5.0.0.0 (Jan 27, 2012)

  • For ALL metadata, UTF-8 character set encoding/decoding is used. Meaning:
  • characters inside metadata will be shown properly, if metadata content is UTF-8 encoded
  • edited metadata values will be automatically saved in UTF-8 format

New in ExifToolGUI 4.26 (Jan 5, 2012)

  • Fixed: In some cases (reported for Windows XP SP1) drives were not visible in browser panel.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.38 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Message List index out of bounds(0) handling changed
  • Till now, sometimes users got above error message without further explanation. Without going into why/when this happened, now GUI catch all messages from Exiftool after processing image files and shows them -this should help user, in case of "unexpected" results, to find the reasons.
  • Select all (Ctrl+A) handling improved.
  • Option to set file filter On when GUI starts added into "Program>Preferences" menu (see tab "Default values").

New in ExifToolGUI 3.37 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Button Exiftool direct added (for executing Exiftool commands inside GUI).
  • If nothing else, because you don't need to type filenames (you select files inside GUI), this can be of great benefit, compared to when using Exiftool from "Command Prompt" window.
  • See FAQ:GUI for further info and usage!

New in ExifToolGUI 3.36 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Edit IPTC:SpecialInstructions and IPTC:DateCreate (and matching XMP tags) added
  • -see Various tab on IPTC/XMP form.
  • Both tags are added for transferring metadata between IPTC and XMP
  • -see menu Modify>XMP: copy from IPTC and IPTC: copy from XMP.
  • Two Canon lenses added: EF-S 15-85IS and EF-S 18-135IS
  • -see menu Modify>Canon Makernotes>LensType (for DPP)
  • As you know by now, this is of use for EOS 20D/350D owners only!
  • Bug corrected in JPG: AutoRotate all files"
  • -images weren't rotated if names of folders (means: path to image files) contained spaces.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.35 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Edit XMP:SerialNumber tag option added (see Various tab on XMP form)
  • I've added this after reading "wish to have" on some forum.
  • Edit EXIF:DocumentName tag option added (see Various tab on EXIF form)
  • This tag is ment for scanned images in first place -of course, it can be used for other purposes as well, e.g. storing "original" source/file name.
  • Because of this, existing GPS tab (which was quite empty) was renamed to Various tab.
  • Preview pane: internal reading of Orientation tag for jpg images implemented into GUI
  • As you know by now, Windows doesn't read Orientation tag when displaying jpg images/thumbnails. To show correct orientation of jpg images (on GUI's Preview pane), additional Orientation tag reading of particular file must be done. Till now, GUI called Exiftool for this purpose, which was perceived as small delay when displaying preview of jpg image.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.34 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Bug fixed: In some cases (e.g. Custom View) predefined keyword/subject separator character wasn't used.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.33 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Bug fixed for using List* button and displaying XMP metadata:
  • -in case when filename contained foreign characters (e.g. German umlaut), no XMP metadata was displayed (thanks Herbert).

New in ExifToolGUI 3.32 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Menu Modify>Canon Makernotes>LensType changed to LensModel
  • To avoid confusion, P.Harvey (exiftool author) separated lens description tag name into two tags:
  • LensType -contains Lens ID number of lens being used
  • LensModel -contains string which describes lens being used
  • Because of this change, it isn't possible to change Lens tag (which contains string) by using LensType tag -LensModel tag name must be used instead.
  • Note: From newer EOS cameras, both tags are used inside Makernotes.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.31 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Menu Transfer GPS from NMEA log added into menu Various
  • I didn't have oportunity (yet), to test speed of this option on larger amount of image files, nor was this option tested on log files, which may contain several thousands of GPS points (e.g. 12h x 60min x 60sec =43200 points). Because of that, only Latitude and Longitude coordinates are parsed from log file and written into image files.
  • Maybe I shouldn't have "published" this option yet (until fully tested). But I've made it (to be "ready" when I will need it)... so I simply share what I have.
  • Note: All files in working folder (where DateTime condition match) will be populated with GPS data -thus, selecting at least one file is required only to enable menu selection.
  • If your GPS device generates gpx log file, then gpx file can be converted to NMEA format by using e.g. freeware GPSBabel GUI utility.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.30 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Changed LensType for Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens (there's possibility, two versions of this lens exist).

New in ExifToolGUI 3.29 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Minor fixes.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.28 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Bug fixed for "Import XMP metadata" (in case source folder name contained spaces, importing didn't succeed).

New in ExifToolGUI 3.27 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Menu Modify>Copy Author & Copyright option added
  • Using this option, you can copy content of tags (which describe Author & Copyright), inside selected file(s). For example, you can copy content of Exif:Artist into XMP:Creator or into IPTC:By-line. Finally, if choosed, source tag will be deleted.
  • Menu Export/Import>Import XMP metadata option enhanced
  • New dialog option has been added, where you can select which XMP tags to import:
  • All XMP metadata (as before),
  • Selected XMP groups only (three "usual needed" groups available for selection),
  • Selected XMP tags only (i.e. for importing GPS data from sidecar XMP files).
  • Menu Export/Import>Embed Preview JPG into selected CR2 files option added (batch capable)
  • To use this option in full automated way, two (freeware) external tools are required: jhead and jpegtran. Both are included in GUI zip and should be put into Windows directory -by using menu Program>About, you can check if GUI can find/use them.
  • Because of nature of this operation (examining/correcting orientation of each source image, embedding image, correcting exif data inside each CR2 file), embedding process is quite slow (see FAQ).
  • Note: In most cases, metadata inside source (JPG) files will be changed/deleted! -thus, if needed, make backup first.
  • Menu Various added
  • JPG: AutoRotate all files -will rotate all images (inside working folder) according to Exif:Orientation tag value. Note: Existing XMP metadata will be deleted.
  • JPG: Rotate Left or Right by 90° -single file operation. Note: All metadata will be deleted.
  • Note: For rotation, jhead & jpegtran are required.
  • I've decided to add above rotating options as "bonus" -embedding previews into CR2 files, requires Jhead and Jpegtran, anyway.

New in ExifToolGUI 3.26 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • Menu Preferences>Preserve DateModified of files option added
  • This option (checked by default) will prevent changing dates of files when modified with GUI.
  • Menu Modify>FileModifyDate as in Exif:DateTimeOriginal added
  • This command will copy Exif:DateTimeOriginal value into File:FileModifyDate -which actually restores original DateTime of image files.
  • Minor bug corrected (thanks Wolfgang)
