New in Quelea 2014 Beta 4 (Jan 22, 2014)

  • Mobile Lyrics:
  • Deciding what backgrounds to use for projection can be a political and administrative nightmare in some churches - you've often got the simplicity camp that maintain it's always white on black, the accessibility camp that to everyone else seem to have an unnatural fascination with yellow on blue, the young cool crowd that just want the latest cool motion backgrounds, the 80's camp that like pictures of cheesy sunsets...
  • But whatever the group that ends up winning, there may still be some in the congregation who find it difficult to read words in that format. Even if it's decided as a policy that, to help dyslexic viewers all the text will be yellow on blue, this doesn't always solve things for everyone, and could arguably end up making it worse for others. This W3 study showed that the Yellow / Blue combination doesn't even represent the combination with the lowest fixation time for dyslexic individuals, and it's one of the higher fixation times for the non-dyslexic participants. Of course, there may be other reasons why people struggle to see lyrics on a projector - poor projector placement, short sightedness, glare on the screen and so on.
  • Quelea aims to solve this in a way we haven't seen anywhere else, by running a server that pushes out the lyrics to a particular web page - the lyrics can then be displayed on a mobile device with whatever colour combination the user chooses. They update in real time without the need to refresh, and because it's a web page rather than an app it's completely device independent, working on Android phones and tablets, Ipods, Iphones and Ipads (or any other device that can display web content.) We hope that this goes a long way to improving accessibility for those who struggle to read words on a screen.
  • The web page also gives you the option to display chords, so can be used as a mobile stage view. We envisage this also being a core use of this feature, since while Quelea has had the option to display chords on a stage view separately for some time, many churches don't run a separate monitor feed for musicians, making it hard to make use of this feature.
  • To turn this feature on in Quelea 2014, simply go to Tools, Options, select the "Mobile Lyrics" tab, then check the checkbox to enable the server. (You'll need to restart Quelea for the change to take effect.)
  • Logo button:
  • As well as the black and clear buttons available in the live panel, a logo button is now also present, which fades to a custom logo image. Right-clicking on this button allows you to choose the logo image from anywhere on your computer.
  • More accurate preview:
  • The previews previously just filled whatever space they had, whatever the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is now matched to the display pane's view, making for a more consistent preview
  • Rewritten theme panel:
  • Remember that ghastly theme panel we had before? It's now much nicer, and with more options too for selecting the position of the text on the screen as well as its alignment
  • One subtle but (we think) important change is that of the font selection dialog. Previously it just blindly displayed every font on your system, which means the selection box is filled with perhaps hundreds of fonts, when you can only ever sensibly use a handful.
  • The selection can of course be changed, just click the ".." button and you'll be taken to a dialog where you can easily choose the fonts that you use often to appear.
  • While we're talking of fonts, it's also worth mentioning that Quelea bundles some nice fonts by default now, and one of them, Noto Sans Bold, is set as the new default. After some research this seemed like one of the best free fonts out there for this type of display, and it has support for a wide array of languages.
  • Video Hue Control:
  • There's also a useful little feature tucked away on the video background side of things - a hue slider has been added that will change the hue (in simple terms, the colour) of the video selected
  • wouldn't recommend using this feature with real life backgrounds, but for abstract videos (which I think work much better in practice regardless) this can work very well indeed for using the same video file, but adding a bit of variety by changing the colour. The hue adjustment will fade nicely in the live view rather than jumping, so you can experiment with things such as "warming" the colour of the video slightly for the final verse of an uplifting song. The still image preview of the video will update as you drag the hue slider along, so you'll be able to see the exact hue of the final video from the preview.
  • To restore the video to its original colour, simply make sure the hue slider is all the way to the left
  • Better font control:
  • One of the most requested features we've had so far is better control over text placement. So as well as the alignment and position options already mentioned, we now have additional controls in the options dialog for selecting line spacing and the maximum font size to use
  • Fading is good:
  • Previously, the clear and black options just cut in straight away, which looked a bit ugly - they now fade in instead (this also applies to the new logo view.)
  • More import options:
  • We have three new importers built in - Quelea can now import from OpenLP, Opensong and Sunday Plus
  • Loop Powerpoint presentations:
  • Previously there was no built in way to loop powerpoint presentations, for instance for rolling notices at the start of a service. When a presentation is displayed, a control is now added to the live view header that allows this to be done easily
  • Test patterns:
  • Another small but handy feature is the inclusion of a few test patterns to help calibrate your projector (or other display equipment.) We've included some colour bars, contrast bars, a focus grid and a position calibration image. Hopefully these will be of use to churches in their setup phase to get everything working as best it can. If you want to try these out, simply click on the Tools menu, then "Test Patterns"
