New in Standard Notes 3.22.11 (Jun 20, 2022)

  • Improved:
  • Improved: Streamlined note type selection menu that removes category headers for an easier to use layout.
  • Improved: New "Cancel multiple selection" option when selecting multiple items, for a convenient way to exit multiple selection mode.
  • Improved: Modernized design for editing disabled banner.
  • Improved: File previews for videos now play automatically after they finish loading.
  • Fixed:
  • Fixed: Issue where creating a note while in a smart view would immediately deselect the note and remove it from view.
  • Fixed: Issue where main Notes view would not be selected upon app launch.
  • Fixed: Issue with scrolling upwards in an image preview while zoomed in.
  • Internal:
  • Refactor: Replaces Preact with React for better interoperability and consistency.
  • Refactor: Changes the notes list to be generic, to prepare for the ability to display and select files in the main navigation layout. With this in place, you'll soon be able to browse your files via a new "Files" smart view, as well as the ability to multiple-select and manage files in bulk. You'll also be able to create custom smart views for displaying files matching certain criteria. We expect this feature to be ready for the next release. After that's in place, we'll begin working on the ability to tag files, so you can organize your files into tags/folders, without the need to use notes as the organizing measure.

New in Standard Notes 3.20.0 (Jun 3, 2022)

  • New:
  • New: Encrypted file storage. Now you can drag and drop to upload any kind of file directly to your Standard Notes account. It will be end-to-end encrypted and synced with the rest of your devices.
  • Files like images, videos, and PDFs can be previewed directly in Standard Notes.
  • Use the left and right arrow keys while previewing a file to go to the previous/next image or file.
  • Files focuses on a great "outside-of-editor" experience, and does not currently support embedding encrypted files directly inside of an editor. However, files can be "associated" with a note.
  • In a near term upcoming release, you'll be able to tag files, so that you don't have to associate them with notes at all, but instead have them navigable via the tags/folders paradigm.
  • New: Encrypted file backups. When you enable file backups from Preferences > Backups > File Backups, files uploaded on any device are automatically pulled in and saved in encrypted form to a folder on your computer. This folder can be an ordinary folder, or it can be a networked folder like Dropbox or Drive.
  • New: Private workspaces. These workspaces are normal accounts, but whose email is generated pseudorandomly based on private input. Learn more about private workspaces.
  • New: Option to sign out of all workspaces.
  • New: Ability to switch workspaces directly from the lock screen.
  • New: Modernized design for lock and authentication screens.
  • New: When you enable Use system color scheme from the Appearance preferences, we'll now present a toast notification in the bottom right corner of the app before we switch your theme. This allows you to prevent the application from switching to your night or day theme if you are temporarily using some other theme for the particular mood you may be in.
  • New: The Markdown Visual editor (now the "Dynamic Markdown" note type) is now out of beta and into wide release.
  • We have another exciting new editor/note type in the works related to task management that we think you're going to love!
  • Improved:
  • Improved: Editors are now referred to as "Note Types" in the UI. Editors have also been renamed to match this paradigm. For example, whereas previously you would create a note and set it's editor to Markdown Visual, now you'd create a note and set its type to "Dynamic Markdown" or "Markdown with Math". We find the concept of describing what a note does rather than what editor it uses to be more intuitive for unfamiliar users.
  • Improved: General improvements to our conflict handling architecture.
  • Fixed:
  • Fixed: issue on Safari where folder names would appear dimmed.
  • Subscription Changes:
  • We've simplified our plan offering to only two paid plans instead of three. You'll now have the option between Plus and Pro. Plus gives you all of Standard Notes features without restriction, but only 100mb of file storage, and Pro gives you everything in Plus as well as 100gb of file storage. In addition, Pro accounts will soon allow subscription sharing with up to 5 accounts.
  • If you purchased a Core plan previously (for $29/year), congratulations, you're now on the Plus plan! You won't have to pay anything additional, and your plan will renew for the same price you signed up at.
  • If you're an existing Plus user, congratulations, you've now gained all of what Standard Notes has to offer, including TokenVault and spreadsheets.
  • As promised, two-factor authentication is now a free feature available for all accounts.

New in Standard Notes 3.15.0 Beta 4 (May 4, 2022)

  • Files related fixes and improvements, including progress bar when uploading and downloading.
  • Note: this build downgrades the Electron version from the previous beta version, which results in the app's database being reset. With an account on launch, you may see the app download all your items. If using the beta without an account, first backup your data using beta-3, then upgrade to beta-4.

New in Standard Notes 3.15.0 Beta 3 (Apr 26, 2022)

  • New: Files Public Beta. The beta is only available to Plus or Pro subscribers. Plus users get a “sample” tier of 100MB storage, and Pro users get 100GB. If you’d like to participate in the public beta, please fill out your email here, and optionally answer the other questions: https://standardnotes.typeform.com/to/FCBPK83m
  • Ability to preview PDF files

New in Standard Notes 3.15.0 Beta 2 (Apr 26, 2022)

New in Standard Notes 3.14.1 (Mar 27, 2022)

New in Standard Notes 3.13.0 (Mar 11, 2022)

  • New: No more "Potentially Out of Sync"! Or, at least a lot less of it. Now, when the app detects you may be out of sync with the server, it will do the smart thing and talk with the server to try to figure out and correct the discrepancy automatically. In rare cases where the discrepancy couldn't be auto-resolved, you'll see the out of sync message, instructing you to sign out and back in.
  • New: Markdown Visual editor, now in beta. To enable this editor, you must have the Plus or Pro plan. Then head to Preferences > General > Labs, and enable Markdown Visual. This editor will now appear in your editor menu.
  • Markdown Visual is a new WYSIWYG-style Markdown editor that renders Markdown in preview-mode while you type without displaying any syntax. It's based on the open-source Milkdown editor.
  • Improved: Search options now appear as bubbles when you start searching, rather than as a separate menu. This allows you to ensure you're searching with the most relevant options.
  • As a reminder, protected notes' contents are not searched by default. To search those contents, toggle the "Protected Contents" bubble.

  • We upgraded our tech stack to the latest version of Electron (v8). This is what let us build a more complete spellchecking solution, and as the Electron team continues to improve their security model and implement new system integrations, Standard Notes will continue to benefit from these as well.
  • We rewrote desktop JavaScript files in TypeScript, thus increasing the robustness of the app by catching bugs before the app is even shipped.
  • We've added many automated tests to catch behavioral bugs before shipping.
  • As an indirect result of all these changes, many user-reported bugs have been fixed.

  • Fixes issue where some Actions wouldn't load due to URL formatting.
  • Fixes #358.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.12 (Jun 7, 2019)

  • This release introduces many improvements to the underlying syncing algorithm, and reflects our syncing API's first major update. These changes relate mostly to conflict resolution handling, where the application says one thing, but the server says another thing. While the previous system was able to handle many of these scenarios well, there were other rare situations where the previous logic was not nuanced enough to discern the best course of action.
  • This release strengthens both the application-side logic, as well as takes a more nuanced approach on the server in relation to conflict handling. Overall, these changes are all under the hood, so you shouldn't really notice them.
  • This release also includes several general fixes, in addition to:
  • Fixes multi-monitor post-disconnection issue #311
  • Fixes an issue where menu bar visibility status is not saved on Windows.
  • Starting an app instance twice on Linux will now focus the existing instance.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.9 (May 18, 2019)

  • Fixes issue where tabbing twice successively could cause editing glitch.
  • Updates favicon for web application.
  • Low level improvements for increased performance and stability.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.8 (Apr 18, 2019)

  • Fixes issue where resizing window could result in a list of notes that doesn't scroll.
  • Fixes issue where expanding a window may not at times expand the editor view area.
  • Fixes issue where one could insert a tab character in a locked note using the plain editor.
  • Fixes issue where dragging and dropping a file would result in a fullscreen takeover of the file contents. File attachments are only supported in the context of FileSafe, and must be dragged-and-dropped within that extension only.
  • Fixes issue where + buttons for notes and tags could be vertically misaligned on Windows and Linux.
  • Fixes issue where changing a user preference (such as sort order and display options) would not take effect in other synced devices right away.
  • Fixes issue where a sync request may trigger before local data has been fully loaded, sometimes causing the "Potentially Out of Sync" message to appear. A remote sync will now not occur until all local data has been loaded first.
  • Disables spellcheck by default for the plain editor, as spellcheck can reduce editor performance. It can be enabled from the editor pane Menu option.
  • Disables spellcheck for note title field. On Safari, spellcheck in this field is particularly pesky.
  • Adds note about saving Session History to disk: enabling this feature can drastically reduce performance.
  • Adds ability for Windows and Linux users to disable themed menu bar and restore the traditional system menu bar. This option can be accessed from the top-level View menu.
  • Adds loading status text in the bottom footer, similar to the mobile app. It will show you initial loading status, like "Decrypting 300/1500 items", when the app is saving a local backup on desktop, and when large sync requests are occurring.
  • Adds "Restart Application" as a resolution method in case of "Potentially Out of Sync" message.
  • Autofocuses passcode lock input when the window appears.
  • Optimizes note-tag relationships to minimize chance of duplication in sync conflicts. This optimization will run once when you first launch the app, and a status message will display in the footer. Notes and tags created before July 2018 typically had a bi-directional relationship. That is, notes referenced tags, and tags referenced notes. This optimization transfers items with this old structure to the modern structure, where only tags reference notes.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.6 (Feb 20, 2019)

  • Fixes issue where "Potentially Out of Sync" message would be displayed erroneously in some cases. If you were previously seeing this message even after signing out and signing back, please try to sign out and back in once more once you have downloaded this update, and you should no longer see this message.
  • Fixes issue where pressing enter/return on keyboard while editing note title would reset a note's rich preview back to plain preview.
  • Fixes issue where trashing/untrashing a note would reset its rich preview.
  • Fixes issue where having an editor set to offline only would display a white screen when attempting to load it in the web app, instead of showing a message that the editor is intended for desktop use only.
  • Improvements to trash menu UI.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.5 (Feb 15, 2019)

  • Fixes an issue with a new placeholder note being created on startup that cannot be deleted.
  • Introduces Sync Integrity Verification. This feature runs on app startup and when you press the Refresh button in the bottom right corner. Sync Integrity Verification verifies that your local application (client) is in sync with the server, with both having the same set of data. This is accomplished by computing a hash on the client and on the server. If these hashes don't match, we know that the client and server must have different data. Hashes are comprised of millisecond-precise timestamps of item last modification date. When both client and server are in sync, the date of modification of each item should match. If they don't, then we know there is potential discordance.
  • If your app is currently in sync, you will not notice this feature. However, if we detect that the client and server may be out of sync (very rare), you'll see a message in the bottom right corner that says "Potentially Out of Sync". Upon clicking that option, you are advised on two options to remedy the problem. The first, and easiest, is just to sign out and sign back in. The second option is an automatic reconciliation process that will download all items from the server and re-sync your data locally.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.4 (Feb 3, 2019)

  • 3.0.4 makes improvements to initial application load time, increasing performance by roughly 25-30%. Performance during normal usage should also be smoother.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.3 (Jan 29, 2019)

  • Introducing the new Trash feature. The first step in deleting a note will now always be moving it to the trash. From there, you can permanently delete it. Be sure to update to mobile version 3.0.0 to get matching functionality.
  • Smart tags now appear without the Folders component. However, they can only be created using the Folders component. They will also work on mobile v3. Note that if you created a custom Archived tag previously, you should delete this smart tag, as it will no longer work. The system now provides its own Archived smart tag.
  • When saving a local backup, the app will now display a status message in the footer.
  • Protecting a note will now hide its list of tags in the main list of notes.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.2 (Jan 4, 2019)

  • This release fixes an issue with component stack extensions like FileSafe, where FileSafe would not receive proper data upon being unhidden or displayed.

New in Standard Notes 3.0.1 (Dec 24, 2018)

  • Introducing Privileges.:
  • Privileges allow you to require your account password or local passcode to perform certain actions in the app. Actions include:
  • Download/Import Backups:
  • View Protected Notes
  • Delete Notes
  • Manage Extensions
  • Manage Passcode
  • Manage Extensions
  • The key privilege is "View Protected Notes". If you protect a note and enable this privilege, credentials will be required to access/view the note.
  • Autolock:
  • 3.0 also introduces autolock, which allows you to specify when the app should automatically lock itself if you have a passcode lock. The autolock timer begins when the window loses focus.
  • Improved Themeing:
  • Themes will now look much more consistent, especially across extensions. All Extended themes have also been revamped to look much cleaner and thicker.
  • Themes are now easier to toggle between using dock shortcuts, which will automatically appear in the bottom right corner when you install or update your themes to the latest version.
  • (If you experience any issues with theme display, try uninstalling the theme and reinstalling, to ensure that cache is not coming into play.)
  • Other changes:
  • Reverse sort option to sort by date added, modified, and title in reverse.
  • Editor stack extensions (like the Action Bar and FileSafe) can now be quickly toggled using the dock below the editor. Stack extensions are now disabled by default for every note, and can be permanently enabled by toggling the extension for that note.
  • Consistent Windows scrollbars across all extensions and themes.
  • Lock screen will now use last active theme.
  • Expired Extended will now result in extensions being put in read-only mode, rather than seeing a blocking "Expired Extended" screen.
  • Session history and Note history will now display with the note's respective editor, if applicable.
  • Panel resizers will now blend in with the editor UI more when they are collapsed. On Mac, the notes panel and editor panel will also automatically adjust to avoid the window management buttons in the top left.
  • Loading editors and extensions using dark themes should now see the white flicker disappear for the most part. You may still see it occasionally, just due to the differences in loading speed from time to time.
  • Extensions that have difficulty loading will now automatically try reloading.

New in Standard Notes 2.3.13 (Nov 26, 2018)

  • Session history will now be sorted by most recent changes first

New in Standard Notes 2.3.10 (Oct 25, 2018)

  • 2.3.10 fixes issue from 2.3.9 where + buttons were not interactive.
  • Extended editors previews will now display cleaner previews (no raw markup). Be sure to update your editors from the Extensions menu. Requires at least one edit per note to trigger new previews (try it with the Simple Task Editor).
  • Ability to hide preview per note (accessible via Options menu from note editor).
  • Locked notes now require unlock before delete.

New in Standard Notes 2.3.0 Beta 2 (Jul 19, 2018)

  • This release includes a very much improved architecture that is shared across all versions of the Standard Notes applications, including desktop and mobile. Previously, the web/desktop application contained its own code related to managing sync and items, and the mobile app contained this same code, but duplicated manually. This leads to difficulty in maintaining, and potential for inconsistent behavior.
  • Version 2.3.0 on all platforms leverages SFJS, which is a separated client-side library we maintain which contains the code related to syncing, authenticating, duplicating, and encrypting/decrypting. With this, we expect to see improved and more consistent syncing behavior, as well as conflict resolution, and general data handling.
  • SFJS also includes several unit tests, which runs automated tests against every aspect of how the system is intended to function. This means we can make sure there weren't unnecessary regressions in every new release, and also leads to higher levels of confidence in new releases, both for you, and for us.
  • Important
  • This release includes a change to how new relationships are managed between notes and tags. New notes tagged on version 2.3.0 will not appear as tagged in versions earlier than 2.3.0, including on mobile. It's recommended to participate in this beta on all platforms for best tag consistency.
  • Smart Tags
  • 2.3.0 includes support for the Folders Smart Tags. Using the Folders extension, you can create dynamic tags that query your notes for a certain condition.
  • For example, if you wanted to see a list of all "untagged" notes, you would create a smart tag like so:
  • !["Untagged", "tags.length", "=", 0]
  • Simple enter this value as you would enter any value using the Folders extension (click + to add a new Folder, then paste this value in.)
  • The components of the smart tag syntax are as follows:
  • !: The beginning of a smart tag
  • [...]: A JSON array
  • The first item in that JSON array is the display label.
  • The second item is the property you are targeting.
  • The third is the operator.
  • And the last is the expected value.
  • Other examples:
  • !["Untagged", "tags.length", "=", 0]
  • !["B-tags", "tags", "includes", ["title", "startsWith", "b"]]
  • !["Foo Notes", "title", "startsWith", "Foo"]
  • !["Archived", "archived", "=", true]
  • !["Pinned", "pinned", "=", true]
  • !["Not Pinned", "pinned", "=", false]
  • !["Last Day", "updated_at", ">", "1.days.ago"]
  • !["Long", "text.length", ">", 500]
  • Regex is also supported. But be sure to escape your / and as necessary.
  • !["Only Letters", "title", "matches", "^[a-zA-Z]+$"]

  • Backups will always be encrypted unless you're signed out and do not have an app passcode.
  • You can set the location of your backups to any folder you like, including a cloud sync folder such as Dropbox or other services.
  • If at some point you'd like to preview the contents of a backup file, you can either:
  • Use the decrypt script available at https://standardnotes.org/offline.
  • Sign out of your app (or launch a blank session at app.standardnotes.org), and import the file. If it looks good, clear out the app session data, and sign back in to your account, then proceed with importing the file. Items from the backup file will overwrite the contents of existing items.

New in Standard Notes 2.1.0 Beta (Oct 31, 2017)

  • Version 2.1 is the "make your life easier" update. It adds useful functions that make Standard Notes fit more comfortably in your daily workflow.
  • What's New:
  • Resizable panels — you now have the ability to resize and collapse panels. You can even resize the margins in the editor.
  • Basic keyboard shortcuts — you can now use cmd/ctrl +n to create a new note, +d to delete a note, +shift+p to pin/unpin, and +shift+a to archive/unarchive. There's also basic support for using the up and down arrow keys to go to the next or previous note.
  • Note list display options — you now have the option to control what info shows up in your notes list. You can hide or show: archived notes, pinned notes, note preview, note tags, and note date. This is helpful for managing vertical display space.
  • Ability to switch between monospace and default system proportional font (available in the editor pane's Menu dropdown).
  • Search results count — when you perform a search, the number of notes matching your search will be displayed in the top of the notes column.
  • Rename extensions — you can rename your editors, themes, and other extensions to names that may be more meaningful to you.
  • Ability to hide menu bar on Windows and Linux (available in the "View" menu) and via alt+m.
  • Right to left language support.
  • [The Toggle Fullscreen option that was previously available in the Menu dropdown has been removed in favor of resizable panels; it's preferable to have only 1 way of doing something, otherwise things have the potential to get messy.]
