New in SuperBeam 7.19c (Apr 25, 2019)

  • Fixes Windows XP incompatibility introduced into 7.19a. Please note that maintaining XP compatibility in future releases is not guaranteed: some things are in our control but our programs use several bought-in code libraries whose authors no longer guarantee XP compatibility. Microsoft officially withdrew support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014.
  • The new page heading designer now adds Undo and Redo buttons.
  • In the page heading designer you can now move an item by clicking on it in the preview pane, then pressing Ctrl+Up/Down/Left/Right. The item is moved by the grid increment set at the bottom of the designer.
  • Overline spacing has been increased slightly on PDFs

  • Fix for missing toolbar icons on some displays

New in SuperBeam 7.02a (Jan 27, 2017)

  • Changes made to printing code to (hopefully) work around change made in Windows 10 August update which can trigger printer errors in previously working code. More here.
  • Various changes made to enhance program appearance, especially on hi-res displays.
  • Toolbar Add Beam button and Project Menu, Add Beam option each now display a menu which lets you select the beam type (loads, steel, timber or steel+timber). You can still change the beam type within the Beam, Edit dialog.

New in SuperBeam 7.01b (Jan 27, 2017)

  • Bug fix: Selecting a standard load with a '!' in the load expression caused an AV error.
  • User Setup dialog, File Names and Locations page now includes an extra field showing the setup log file. Right-click to view this if you encountered any errors installing the program.
  • Jun 28 build: Fixes bug with window and dialog positions not being remembered

New in SuperBeam 7.01a (Jan 27, 2017)

  • For clarity the Print dialog now shows the selected options and copy allocations in bold.

New in SuperBeam 7.00g (Jan 27, 2017)

  • Some flitch beam data fields not visible in beam edit dialog on some displays - fixed

New in SuperBeam 7.00e (Jan 27, 2017)

  • A few (out of 300+) users of SB/PS7.00 have reported that an empty rectangle is printed where a beam loading or BM/SF diagrams should be. 6 April build includes reworked diagram printing code to try and fix this.
  • Ctrl+C removed as Copy to RTF shortcut so as to allow it to be used for copying text from dialog fields.
  • Further to some users reporting that the default dialog font is suboptimal, we have added an extra field in the fonts dialog that lets you select the font to be used. Note that choosing too large a font will result in text not fitting in the allotted space.
  • Use field content as file name on new project button in Project Details dialog didn't work - fixed
  • New button in timber post edit dialog lets you modify the member dimensions shown in the dropdown lists as for beams.
  • Various small UI improvements

New in SuperBeam 7.00c (Jan 27, 2017)

  • Dialog font size increased slightly
  • Axis values and legend on printed load and BM/SF diagrams were unreadably small - fixed
  • In 7.00a we removed the default Enter [OK] and Escape [Cancel] key handling for modal dialogs. A new preference option optionally reinstates this.

New in SuperBeam 7.00b (Jan 27, 2017)

  • Further cosmetic enhancements bringing SuperBeam into line with the just-released ProSteel 7.
  • For the tabs used in the beam, column and connection edit dialogs (and others) you can now choose the tab colours as before, or if you check the 'Use theme colours' checkbox in the Colour dialog the default colour for the current theme will be used.
  • Bug in 7.00a could leave LH side of calculations not visible - fixed.
  • In 7.00a if you chose one of the dark colour schemes the content of some dialogs (e.g. User Setup) was barely visible - fixed.

New in SuperBeam 4.61c (Jun 11, 2014)

  • On the beam edit load page you could move the slider so as to hide the load entry table. The degree of movement is now limited so this cannot happen.
  • A new option on the text page editor 'Link lines' joins and wordwraps consecutive non-tagged and non-ruler lines as has been the case for notes. See Miscellaneous, Latest Information page within program for full details.

New in SuperBeam 4.61a (Jun 11, 2014)

  • RTF copy option: Calculations can be copied to the clipboard in RTF format, from where they can be pasted into applications such as Word.
  • Size of internally generated PDF files reduced
  • Standard load page template loads updated following user feedback
  • 4.61b (Nov 27) fixes a print misalignment bug introduced in 4.61a

New in SuperBeam 4.60d (Jun 11, 2014)

  • The layouts of the timber post and steel column edit dialogs have been changed slightly. The load position buttons are now on a panel to the right of the loading grid and become active when you click on the load grid. Problems with B/F load functionality have been resolved.
  • Standard Loads page: From the beginning we have always been reluctant to give any guidance on standard loads, the rationale being that if you need such help you shouldn't be using our programs. Given periodic requests we have now finally added a standards load page. For more information see the program Latest Information page.

New in SuperBeam 4.60b (Jun 11, 2014)

  • Beam o.w. load line now only adds o.w. for steel and/or timber beams.
  • Bearing notes continued to be shown in Summary when bearing type changed to 'Omit' - now any note is deleted if you change the type to 'Omit'
  • Script editors now add a button which lets you change the edit panel font.
  • Script enhancements: Scripts and script pages can now include Summary.Add() statements which function in the same way as Output.Add() statements. The text entered appears in the Project Summary. You can also assign values to predefined variables WindowTitle and PrjMgrLine, e.g. WindowTitle := 'CATNIC CN6 LINTEL;'. Values assigned here appear in the screen window title bar and Project Manager. New values CantLenR1 and CantLenR2 have been added - usually these will be checked to ensure they are zero, i.e. the beam does not extend as a cantilever at either end.
  • New script: A new script Catnic IG 100mm box lintel combines the earlier Catnic and IG scripts so as to give both lintel options on one sheet.
  • Enhanced scripts: The original Catnic, IG, Stressline and TJI scripts have been replaced with new ones that use the Summary, WindowTitle and PrjMgrLine variables above.
  • A 24-year old bug fixed! When the expression evaluator was written for SuperBeam 1 we managed to get the expression evaluation wrong for expressions involving sequential addition and subtraction. Following BODMAS too literally 2-3+4 was evaluated as 2-(3+4) = -5.. The correct evaluation is 2+(-3)+4=3. After 24 years we've got it right! For more see this forum post. It's highly unlikely to have affected any calculations but does also affect the calculator.
  • Note that we still give precedence to multiplication over division so 2x3/4x5 is evaluated as if the division symbol was a horizontal line with the preceding and following parts above and below it, viz (2x3)/(4x5) = 0.3, not 2x(3/4)x5=7.5

New in SuperBeam 4.60a (Jun 11, 2014)

  • The combined stress ratio was not always visible in the column edit dialog - fixed
  • Bug fixed which affected a few users: beam load edit grid height was not retained and grid showed fewer rows each time beam edit called - fixed
  • Shortcut key for Add Column is now Ctrl+L (was Ctrl+A, clashes with select all text in memo field)
  • Configuration, Standard Loads and Notes option has been renamed Configuration, Library
  • New scripting option: six ready to use scripts, one each for 100mm wide IG and Catnic box lintels, 100x140mm Stressline prestressed concrete lintels and 220mm deep, 241mm and 302mm deep TJI joists. If you're computer literate, write your own

New in SuperBeam 4.58j (Jun 11, 2014)

  • One fix in this release: Print BM/SF diagram setting was lost on beam edit (bug introduced in 4.58h)

New in SuperBeam 4.58i (Jun 11, 2014)

  • Steel column section selection now mirrors that for beams: you now have check, select by minimum weight and (new) select by minimum depth.
  • Non-BS4 (new Advance) steel sections: New setting in Project Details dialog gives you three options when using the program to select a section: you can include these sections (as before), exclude them from consideration, or, you can choose to have any suitable such section noted as an alternative: e.g. the program might select a 610x229x101 UB and use this for the calculations but adds a line under the section name stating that a 610x178x100 UB would also be suitable. This line is not added where the selected section is already the lightest or shallowest one.

New in SuperBeam 4.58h (Jun 11, 2014)

  • Range check error was thrown when clicking on Project Manager list if list empty or if pressing Paste if list empty - fixed

New in SuperBeam 4.58g (Jun 11, 2014)

  • A note is added to steel beam calculations where the beam comprises two or three sections and no other notes have been added. The note reads 'Sections to be bolted together with tube spacers or suitable alternative connections at max 1.5m c/s'. This is a one-off procedure: the standard text will not be reinserted if you delete or edit it.
  • If you selected 'Usual user' in the User Initials dialog your initials were printed with a question mark in front of them - fixed
  • A few small presentational improvements have been made to the calculation printouts

New in SuperBeam 4.58f (Jun 11, 2014)

  • Internal PDF generation now uses a different code library (QuickPDF).
  • Bug fixed which allowed beam load edit page splitter bar to be moved so as to obscure load table
  • Bug fixed which stopped the first item in the Project Manager list being copied and pasted
  • BM and SF line thicknesses in beam BM/SF diagrams are now separately definable for the current printer and for internally generated PDFs
  • Effective lengths: if you enter an actual length 'm.' is now added to make it clear that this is a physical length, not a factor
  • Sundry small improvements to user interface and printouts

New in SuperBeam 4.58e (Jun 11, 2014)

  • The B/F button on the beam load edit dialog didn't work - fixed.
  • An updated third-party code library used in 4.58d caused the values of some spin edits to be set to zero and they could not then be changed. Key affected fields: Beam Load Edit dialog: timber E-value and steel/timber bearings bearing plate thicknesses; Column Edit dialog: column length above and all baseplate dimensions; Page Settings: line widths.
