  • Bugs corrections
  • When you was using a personal date's format (for the files list), it was not saved. Bugs corrected

  • There was a bug in the window wich enable you to export tags and information. You could not change the field separator.
  • I have changed the calendar control I was using to change, for example, files date and time. This control was causing many troubles to many users. Now the problem disappear.
  • About dates, when you was changing date and time of files, there was many bugs, they have been corrected
  • When you was using the option Rename with file's content, the program was crashing. Problem solved.
  • The window wich enable you to use Exif tags was not properly saving the preferences. Problem solved.
  • Some bugs have been corrected in the option Rename from a list.
  • Some bugs have been corrected, too, when you was using Ogg tags to rename files.
  • In the window wich enable you to select commands to rename your sounds files, like MP3, OGG, VQF and WMA files, the line wich contain the command (for example %Artist%) have been modified from a combo box to a text box.
  • When you was saving settings, selected options for WMA files was not saved
  • Some program's windows was not visible when you was using Alt + Tab. All the program's windows are now visible.
  • The program was not keeping the files list sort order. Problem corrected.
  • The program was crashing when you was doing a double click in the files list when you was in an empty folder. Problem solved.
  • Modifications :
  • Because of a last minute problem, it is not any more possible to use the F1 key to have help on a command of the Free Form option. Sorry for this.
  • New Features :
  • THE Rename is available in English AND in French and can be translated in any other language.
  • The help file have changed, it is now available as a CHM file. (To use it you must have Internet Explorer 4)
  • The window wich enable you to copy files name can now be use to save files names to a file.
  • About EXIF tags, you can now extract just the date and/or the time from the tags DateTime, DateTimeDigitized and DateTimeOriginaldatas. You can also format this date or time as you want. To do it, use the Free Form option and one of the following commands :
  • The Options window has changed. It looks like the preferences in Netscape/Mozilla.
  • When you are searching for long files names (from the preview window), you can now only check the prefix's length. Refer to the options.
  • In the perspective of an internationalization of the program, the majority of windows were modified. They are generally a little bigger. Only the window of the options have been totally changed.
  • When you use the Free Form option and if you use tokens, you can now open a new window where you can see, for each file, the different tokens. To do it, scroll the little menu included with the button wich enable you to see Free form options and select the menu See tokens.
  • You can add your favorites tools in the main toolbar of THE Rename. You can add them and use/launch them directly from the main screen of the program.
  • The information window have been removed.
  • I have added a new option Monitor Long Names. With this option, you can ask THE Rename to monitor new names and to act when they are too longs. When it's the case, you can ask the program to truncate the filename, to ignore the file to ask you a confirmation or to ask you the new name. Thank you Fred Thompson for the suggestion.
  • You can use the program to rename WAV files. You can also, like for the other musical files, use THE Rename to export the tags to a text file.
  • But as opposed to what I usually do, there is no user interface to use the information contained inside these files. You can only use the following Free Form commands to treat WAV files :
  • For all to say to you, I am fed up to to develop such interfaces to make this kind of things whereas it is very simple to make it with the Free Form option.

  • I have changed the window I was using to rename files manually (F2). It is more powerful.
  • About this window, you can create the folowing registry key :
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\THERename\Param\RenManPosTxtBox
  • with the folowing values to :

  • 0 When the window is opened, the program select all the filename
  • 1 The program will position to the first column of the text box
  • 2 The program will position to the last column of the text box
  • 3 The program will automatically select the prefix
  • 4 The program will automatically select the extension
  • F11 will now launch RegExp Rename.
  • About RegExp rename, you can now, when you are in this window, use a preview button. Regexp rename will now log its renames in the log file.
  • The contextual menu available on the text box of the Free Form option have been removed
  • The listview containing the Free Form commands have been sub divised and reorganised.
  • THE Rename can now read, use and export IPTC tags from Jpeg files. You can rename files with IPTC tags when you are using the Modify Prefix option and with the Free Form option with the folowing commands :
  • I have added an hidden option in the registry base. If you create this key :
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\THERename\HiddenParam\RenameOnlyNewFiles
  • and if you set its value to 1, then when you are renaming files, if the original filename is equal to the new name (in fact if the filename does not change) then the file will not be renamed.

  • The installer has been corrected because I was installing the file OLEAUT32.DLL version 3 wich was causing many problems for Windows 98 users.
  • When you was using the shortcut Ctrl + F5 to rename files the program was starting to rename files then it was refreshing the program, so the rename process was stopped.

  • When you have defined a personnal date format, THE Rename was not using it correctly
  • When you was changing the date of pictures with the EXIF date, if a file did not contain EXIF tags, THE Rename was crashing.
  • The program was not restoring its dimensions when you was using the option Remember window size
  • There was a bug when you was using F9 or Sifht F9 after you have clicked on a tab
  • When you was using the option Automatically select all files the status bar was not indicating the good number of selected file
  • In the Free Form option you was not able any more to change counter's values and to change cylic selections. Now you can do it by using the drop down list on the button named Organize your commands.

New in THE Rename 2.1 (Oct 10, 2011)

  • Before all, THE Rename is now a DonationWare, that is to say that you can still use it as you want for profesionnal or personnal use, there is no obligation to pay any amount of money but if you like the program, you can make a donation. To do it, just go in the About box of the program and on the tab named Donation, read the text and if you can, make a donation. Thanks in advance.

  • When you was renaming a file directly from the files list, you could give it the same name that an other file.

  • In the Aboux box, you can now use a button to check if you have the last release of the program.
  • You can now use the tags inside you jpeg and tiff pictures to rename your files ! That's why I have changed the program's version. Now, THE Rename can read, export and preview EXIF tags.
  • EXIF tags are some information that digital cameras include inside pictures when you take the photo. For example, the flash, the orientation, the subject distance…
  • THE Rename can also change the date and time of your files with the date and time include inside

  • As you could preview pictures and tags in previous versions, you can now preview short text files.

  • I have changed the installer THE Rename uses. Now I'm using the same installer as Winamp (many thanks to the nullsoft guys). After 2 years of "tests" (problems in fact) with the Microsoft Installer, I have decided to drop it, I have too many problems with it and especially under Windows 2000 and XP. So now THE Rename don't need anything to be installed.

  • THE Rename has been tested and runs perfectly under Windows XP.
  • You can rename Ogg files (a new musical format from Vorbis, a direct concurent to MP3) with their tags.
  • You can rename your ogg files with the Modify Prefix option and with the Free form option. All commands
  • are identicals to MP3 commands.
  • There was a bug when you was renaming Vqf files with their tags, it has been corrected
  • Possibility to preview tags from Vqf, Ogg and Mp3 files.

  • I have changed the About box to display more information about the program

  • You can use a default file for cyclic selections and a default file for abbreviations.
  • I have added and option to automatically remove starting spaces, i have also added a new option to automatically select all files when you go in a folder.

  • In the option Rename from a list, you can now select files in the files list and drop them in the list of files
  • to rename with the mouse.
  • I have added a new window, View log File. Now, you can undo any rename operation, even if you leave the program (you only need to specify a log file in the options).
  • You can ask to THE Rename to modify tags cases of your MP3 and VQF files while it is extracting their tags. For example, the program can automatically convert tags to upper cases.

New in THE Rename 2.0c (Oct 10, 2011)

  • First, THE Rename is not any more a Beta version. After 3 years of tests, I've decided to remove the Beta word from it !
  • THE Rename is resizeable !
  • You can move files in the files list by using Alt + Up arrow and Alt + Down arrow
  • Regular expressions have been totaly modified, now THE Rename can use Unix/Linux regular expressions and Perl Compatible regular expressions.
  • THE Rename fully supports ID3v2 Tags of MP3 files !
  • You can preview pictures and MP3 tags.
  • You can use rules to rename your files according to some conditions.
  • I've added a new option in the Edit menu, RegExp Rename.

  • I've created a new window to copy files names. When you use the option Copy Names from the contextual menu of the files list a new window is showed where you can select what to copy.

New in THE Rename 1.7 (Oct 10, 2011)

  • First, I've changed the version number, now it's 1.7. I've made so many modifications that I've decided to go to a new number for the version.
  • Now, you can rename files AND folders ! I've also added a new column in the files list so that you can sort the list by files or by directories.
  • I've changed the save setting option. Now when you save settings, they are saved to a text file. In fact an INI file. So, previous saved settings can't be opened by THE Rename.
  • In the files list and in the folders list, you can now press Alt + Enter to see item's properties.
  • I've added a new option for the prefix and extension : Remove multiple spacing in name and I've also added the two equivalent commands in the free form :

  • I've added a new option in the contextual menu of the files list. When you select only two files and call the contextual menu of the files list, you will see a new option that will enable you to swap filenames.

  • I've added an "Autosave Option". If you use it, THE Rename will save your settings automatically when you stop THE Rename. In this case, a file named autosave.ren in the program's directory will be created and loaded each time.
  • I've added counters with letters. These counters are made like this : A,B,C,D...Z,AA,AB,AC,AD,AE ..
  • They use the same notation as Microsoft Excel. I've also added its equivalent command in the Free form

  • I've changed the Files Attributes window and the files date and time window to have some new possibilities. More powerful !
  • Now you can change files date/time and files attributes with the bin and with the multiple copy button. You can also use this if you drag some files from the Windows Explorer and drop them onto the multiple copy button.
  • You can also change files date/time and attributes immediately by selecting them in the files list and by using the Change files date and time now... option and Change files attributes now option from the contextual menu of this list. You can also change the directories attributes in the same way with the contextual menu of the directory list.

  • You can do multiple file selection by using the ; sign. For example, *.esp;*.dat. When you make a multiple file selection, you must validate it with the Enter key.
