Twilight Render Changelog

What's new in Twilight Render 1.5.2

Nov 29, 2013
  • Options:
  • Directory set up just got a whole lot easier for new users - No longer requires an explicit list of any of the pre-installed scenes, directories, or presets. Twilight Render will always load the installed data regardless, allowing you to have SketchUp 7 and SketchUp 8 separate. It also means you don't have a horrible long list of directories in the options dialog to deal with. You can still add your own directories of course. You will notice that the Options -> Dialogs and Files section has a lot fewer entries in it, maybe none.
  • The Options Dialog became much easier- If you have SketchUp 7 directories hanging around in your SketchUp 8 installation of Twilight Render, creating long lists of materials or render settings, there is a 'Clear' button at the bottom of the Options Dialog to erase all the entries from earlier Twilight installations.
  • Render Settings locations are now clear as a bell. The installed render settings are always displayed in the render editor. But if you have additional 'user-set' render settings directories, you will notice that the render settings panel in the Render Dialog will list the folder location of that set of presets.
  • Material Tools:
  • There is a new tools menu in the Twilight Material Editor Dialog
  • Install Material Library- this allows you to pick a ".zip" Material Library file available from Twilight Render's forum, or the free ".mat.zip" Material Library files available from Kerkythea and will automatically unpack it into the 'user-installed' materials directory. No more messing around with how to install a library or getting the names wrong.
  • Import Material Attributes from any past project - this allows you to load the Twilight Render Material Attributes (actually any attributes) stored in a .skm SketchUp Materials Collection file, and brings them into your current scene. It matches materials in the .skm file to materials in the scene by name. It will also overwrite any existing Twilight Material settings already applied to your scene. It only effects materials that already exist in your scene; it can not effect new materials added later. SketchUp gives no access for plugins to its material libraries; you can only work with materials that are already in your scene. HOW IT WORKS: After completing a rendering of a scene, now you would like to save those materials so that you can use them later, right?
  • Inside SketchUp's material dialog, make sure you are looking at the "In Model" materials list.
  • Now export the materials as a SketchUp Materials Collection (.skm) by clicking the little "Details" button and choosing "Save Collection As". Specify your directory location where to save the Collection. It will save the collection as a .skm file.
  • Now you're building a new model for a new project, before you apply any textures, in the SketchUp materials dialog choose "Open or Create a Collection" and navigate to and open your previously saved Project Materials Collection (.skm). Now apply those materials to the new model so that all the names and colors and textures will be correct.
  • When you are ready to render, these materials will not yet render correctly with the Twilight Material Attributes. Open the Twilight Materials Dialog and choose "Import Material Attributes" and choose the SketchUp Materials Collection (.skm) file location. Now Twilight can match up all the materials by name and apply the correct material attributes.
  • Now render, and all is well with your materials.
  • Reset All - this allows you to quickly revert a SketchUp model back to basic SketchUp materials and "start over" with Twilight materials application.
  • Fixed the colors for the view tool that was caused when SketchUp 8M2 was released.
  • Fixed a texture problem that came up rarely due to UV mapping issues.
  • Changed the Light Editor Dialog Eye Dropper to be yellow, in order to differentiate from the Material Editor Dialog Eye Dropper, which is white.

New in Twilight Render 1.4.5 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • Installer searches for SketchUp 8 by default
  • You can set the starting number for animation files (ie. "my_animation56.jpg, my_animation57.jpg) to make resuming an animation render easier
  • You can set the starting number for SketchyPhysics frames in an animation to "fast-forward" or to resume previous animation render
  • Texture files export with unique names when used in more than one material, in order to support colorized materials better. Now the same texture colorized in different places should render properly automatically. No need to manually add uniquely named textures.
  • Enabled "LargeAddress" memory use. 64 bit systems and some 32 bit systems with more than 3GB of RAM should be able to use more (potentially up to 4GB). This hasn't been verified for all systems, so there isn't any guarantee that you'll see better memory availability
  • Big improvements to the material selection tool, so now "what you see is what you select"! No more back face / front face issues.

New in Twilight Render 1.4.2 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • This version fixes an incorrect error message that appears when attempting to load an IES file into a spot light. It also fixes a rare problem that may occur in the material editor preview when using library materials.

New in Twilight Render 1.4.1 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • In the last release, 1.4.0, there were two bugs that might affect your renders. Twilight wasn't saving some of the sun / sky settings. The second was a "Render Timeout" message. Not everyone was affected by this however.
  • So, we are posting a quick bug-fix release that solves those problems.

New in Twilight Render 1.4 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • Fixed a long standing material problem that was causing circular image artifacts. We are pleased to say that the results are more realistic and up to 25% faster! We are making this its own release (1.4 vs 1.3.1) because the change in the material may cause some differences in your renders vs previous versions.

New in Twilight Render 1.3 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • In this release:
  • Change where any light is aiming by selecting the light, right-clicking, and choosing Twilight->'Set Light Target' from the context menu. Then click on a point to have the light aim at that point.
  • A new 'eyedropper' selector for selecting lights in the Light Editor
  • Several 'auto-saving' options for saving your render periodically, automatically when finished, or manually
  • Save a snapshot of your SketchUp view to the exact dimensions and position as your render
  • A bell sound when your render is complete
  • Use SketchyReplay recordings in your animations, as well as 'real-time' SketchyPhysics simulations.
  • Also fixed some issues:
  • Texture naming - textures no longer risk overwriting each other. They also handle any valid file character, even non-ascii characters.
  • Target during animation - the camera target during animation is now fixed so it matches SketchUp's view, but also maintains a correct target distance for Depth of Field renders.

New in Twilight Render 1.1 (Mar 2, 2012)

  • Several languages available:
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Chinese (simplified and traditional)
  • Japanese
  • German
  • A new View-and-Framing Tool:
  • Frames exactly what will be rendered and adds guide lines to aid composition
  • Condenses pan, orbit and look around functions into one handy tool
  • Allows you to accurately set the focus distance without reorienting the camera
  • Can be linked to a SketchUp keyboard shortcut for quick access
  • Grey bars (Letterboxing) are no longer shown/needed
  • New Licensing Mechanism
  • When licenses are processed, they will now be activated using a text code instead of a license file. (Don't worry, your existing license is still fine!!)
  • If you are running Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit and did not upgrade to 1.0.19, you will need to re-request your license
  • Projector Lights:
  • Corrected the upside down issue
  • Image aspect ratio is now automatically detected
  • Aspect ratio can be locked for easy manipulation
  • Materials:
  • Linked bump and reflection channels now automatically unlink whenever you make a color or texture change, to prevent accidentally contaminating your SU scene.
  • SSS material template has been redone to give dramatically better results.
  • Usability:
  • "Stop Before Next Pass" added to the image context menu, allowing you to tell Twilight to stop as soon as it's done with the current pass.
  • Combined undo steps to make undoing easier
  • Layers in components are rendered as they are visible, by default. You can choose to render "All Layers" from the context menu.
  • This is a change from previous versions that may cause different results in your scene.
  • Image support:
  • Transparency of TGA images is now directly recognized.
  • Twilight can now save rendered images as EXR
  • Fixes:
  • IES lights not loading or crashing (some lights may still not load if the format is unrecognized)
  • Material shininess problems
  • Improved search for IES files and material textures
  • Fixed DLL conflict with other plugins
