  • This update adds a major new feature - support for variable fonts.

New in Type 3.2.042 (Jun 16, 2017)

  • This includes two major new features
  • Glyph validation window (full, demo and light versions) - allows checking of glyphs for common errors and potential issues
  • Full and demo versions also have: an auto-repair option which will fix most issues, and the ability to run validation over multiple glyphs using an action script
  • Support for contextual OpenType features (full and demo versions). For example, it is now possible to implement features of the form
  • SUB one s' t' by s_t
  • Here the glyphs s and t are replaced by the ligature glyph (s_t), but only when they are preceded by the glyph one.
  • A new .feax file called Fractions is included in the update which uses contextual substitution.
  • Manual has also been updated.

New in Type 3.2.039 (Jun 16, 2017)

  • This adds a number of new features including:
  • Smooth, antialiased graphics in the edit window (already in Mac version)
  • Export glyph to svg. New action commands: loadsvg, savesvg allowing automatic load/save of whole font to individual svg files
  • Horizontal/vertical align in points/nodes context menu
  • New touch-up tool: simplify curves, which can reduce the number of nodes in a curve
  • New touch-up tool: add extrema to add extrema nodes
  • Find dialog now allows search results to be displayed in mapping window
  • Extra modifier key functions (shift/control) added for moving nodes and control points
  • The manual has also been updated.

New in Type 3.2.038 (Jun 16, 2017)

  • Extra functionality has been added to Glyph Groups:
  • can be used to create class kerning
  • can save a .gfs file containing a Glyph Group
  • The kerning window has also been updated and improved:
  • menu button added which includes file option to save and load kerning pairs
  • Can now delete glyphs in the middle of the glyph list
  • The manual has also been updated.

New in Type 3.2.035 (Jul 27, 2015)

  • This update introduces a new feature: Glyph Groups. A Glyph Group is a named list of glyph names that can be used for various purposes.
  • To create a new Glyph Group, select Glyph Groups from the Global menu. Here you can create new Groups, save or load Groups to a .feax file, and also add glyphs to Groups by manually entering glyph names. Once a Group has been created you can also add glyphs to it by selecting glyphs in the mapping window and then use add to group from the right click menu.
  • Glyph groups can be used in OpenType feature files to represent OpenType Classes. An action script can now also be run on the glyphs contained in a selected group.
  • There will be other uses for Glyph Groups in future updates including Class Kerning and Glyph Groups that link glyph metrics.
  • The manual has also been updated.

New in Type 3.2.030 (Jul 27, 2015)

  • The main additions included in this update are:
  • User definable horizontal and vertical guidelines (select guidelines from the view menu) can now be set, with optional snap-to function. Note that the guidelines set for a particular font are saved with its .gfs file (save option not available in Type light).
  • As well as images, outlines contained in the clipboard can now be placed in the background layer for manual tracing (select background/insert clipboard from the view menu) (not available in Type light).
  • Pressing ctrl (alt on a Mac) when adjusting control points will restrict their movement in a horizontal or vertical direction.
  • You can now select glyphs into the edit window by double clicking on them from the glyph preview panel (text preview mode) or the full-font preview window (all glyphs mode).

  • This update contains new functions: remove overlap (contour menu) and remove overlap (touch-up tool):
  • remove overlap (contour menu) - will remove overlap between multiple selected contours.
  • remove overlap (touch-up tool) - will remove overlap between two contours. Select a single node on each contour before applying the tool. The result will be a single contour containing both nodes

New in Type 3.2.024 (Sep 1, 2014)

  • In the update the glue tool has been removed, as it is no longer required for joining contours. Contours can now be joined simply by using one of the drawing tools to draw from the last node of one contour to the first node of another (also in Type light).
  • The gap left on the toolbar has been filled by a star/polygon tool for drawing complex shapes. The rectangle tool can now also draw rectangles with rounded edges.

New in Type 3.2.020 (Sep 1, 2014)

  • This update incorporates FreeType rendering library (www.freetype.org) into Type 3.2 font editor.
  • Type 3.2 (light and full versions) now offer a glyph preview panel which renders the glyph at various ppem (pixels per em) sizes while the glyph is being edited. This feature is accessed by selecting glyph preview from the view menu (CTRL + H).

New in Type 3.2.011 (Sep 1, 2014)

  • A rename font option has been added to font menu. This allows the internal name of the font to be changed easily. Advanced names and non-English language entries are automatically taken care of.
  • Pressing the shift key while drawing squares or circles will now have the effect of locking the aspect ratio to 1:1.
  • Pressing the shift key while manually stretching will lock the aspect ratio (full version).
  • Pressing the shift key while manually skewing will skew in the x-direction only (full version).
  • Pressing the shift key while manually rotating will snap the rotation in 45 degree steps (full version).
