W10Privacy Changelog

What's new in W10Privacy 5.1.0.0

Jan 31, 2024
  • Added two additional removable system apps: "Dev Home" and "Outlook (new)"
  • In line with the above settings, two options have been added to the "Apps" tab, which prevent the installation of apps for new Windows logins.
  • Due to a bug, system apps could no longer be uninstalled in the last versions - this issue has now been resolved!
  • Quick note: The discovery of system apps is disabled by default and may need to be enabled first under "Tools" -> "Settings".
  • Add an option to disable telemetry collection within Microsoft Edge
  • Removal of settings for the "old Microsoft Edge browser (EdgeHTML)"
  • Further optimization of the integrated uninstallation of the "Microsoft Edge" browser
  • Minor internal optimizations/simplifications that provide clarity

New in W10Privacy 5.0.0.1 (Dec 9, 2023)

  • Optimization of the integrated uninstallation of the "Microsoft Edge" browser
  • Placement of links to the instructions and the FAQs in the program menu
  • Update of the Italian texts - thanks to NAMP!

New in W10Privacy 5.0.0.0 (Nov 30, 2023)

  • Added over a dozen user apps that can now be uninstalled (Windows 11 23H2)
  • Added over a dozen system apps that can now be uninstalled (Windows 11 23H2)
  • Add/adjust various settings, not just for Windows 11 23H2
  • Expansion of the tasks that can be deactivated
  • Users regularly report that uninstalling the “Microsoft Edge” browser via W10Privacy would not work. In was able to verify that on many systems the native Edge uninstaller, for whatever reason, is simply not able to cleanly remove Edge. The messages that come up here are diverse, e.g. B. does the uninstaller first want to establish a connection to the Internet in order to "repair" the Edge installation before Edge is uninstalled?! At this point, I've had enough of the nonsense that Microsoft is spouting - the setting <Uninstall "Microsoft Edge" software> in the "Edge" tab continues to call up the standard uninstallation mechanisms in the first step However, if the Edge uninstallation is not successful, the new W10Privacy program version will now remove Edge "the hard way": stopping the associated services, removing the associated services, deleting the relevant entries in the registry, deletion of shortcuts on the desktop, deletion of created tasks, deletion of paths in the file system. The mechanics ran without any problems on my test systems, but as always there is no guarantee that this will work to the desired extent on other systems! If Edge is to be reinstalled after deinstallation, the MSI installer can be downloaded from this website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/business/download

New in W10Privacy 4.1.2.4 (Jul 18, 2023)

  • Adding settings for the "Explorer" and "Edge" tabs.
  • Small detail improvements.

New in W10Privacy 4.1.2.3 (Apr 27, 2023)

  • It's amazing: Microsoft regularly manages to build functions into Edge that no one needs and then screw them up in such a way that apparently (almost) all websites accessed are sent to the Bing API ... this feature, that the world has been waiting for can now be disabled. Details can be read here if required: https://www.borncity.com/blog/2023/04/26/microsoft-edge-funktion-fallen-bertrgt-wohl-alle-visited-webseiten-an-bing-api
  • Added the ability to hide the "Chats" icon on Windows 11

New in W10Privacy 4.1.2.2 (Apr 14, 2023)

  • Addition of two settings for the Edge browser

New in W10Privacy 4.1.2.1 (Jan 13, 2023)

  • Virus scanner - the never ending story: Depending on the virus scanner used, it can happen that the W10Privavacy program start is massively hampered. In the case of two users, this resulted in W10Privacy opening an almost infinite number of browser windows that displayed the donation link as a result of the interaction of the virus scanner. This possible problem has now been defused so that it should no longer occur in the future.

New in W10Privacy 4.1.2.0 (Jan 7, 2023)

  • Added a tweak to disable internet connection checking. Thanks to Uwe for the note in the guest book!
  • Integration of another service that can be deactivated
  • Update of the German texts - Many thanks to Jonny for this, as well as for pointing out the service
  • Updated the Italian lyrics - thanks also to the tireless NAMP!

  • Addition of the Italian texts! Thank you NAMP!

New in W10Privacy 4.1.0.0 (Nov 23, 2022)

  • Integration of additional options in the areas of "Privacy", "Services" and "Tasks"
  • Revision of the determination and evaluation of the "Tasks": Now it is also possible to manage tasks with longer and dynamic names (this was necessary for the "Edge" tasks).

New in W10Privacy 4.0.0.2 (Oct 7, 2022)

  • Microsoft Edge will not start due to a bug in the current Edge version if one of the parameters for deactivating the sending of usage behavior is set (https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-edge-105-wont -start-due-to-old-group-policy-how-to-fix). For the moment, the settings have been marked in red and a short note has been added.

New in W10Privacy 4.0.0.1 (Aug 14, 2022)

  • On some systems, files of the "PSWindowsUpdate" module were blocked when PowerShell was called, so it was not possible to search for updates on them (W10Privacy "froze"). In the run-up to the execution of the module, the affected files are first unlocked using the "Unblock-File" call (this was also done with the previous W10Privacy versions and the old "PSWindowsUpdate" module, according to my tests it seemed to work with the new version no longer necessary).
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the "System Apps" tab from showing the reason for showing an empty tab (the tab just remained empty instead of showing the "Settings" notice).

New in W10Privacy 3.8.0.2 (May 20, 2022)

  • Life in IT is permanent mental torture. So the developers of the AutoIt development environment have installed a nice feature in the current version "3.3.16.0", which means that the same W10Privacy source code under Windows 11 leads to empty tabs ... So I've now recreated the code with the previous version "3.3.14.5" and lo and behold - everything is fine again! Sometimes it's really not all solemn anymore...

New in W10Privacy 3.8.0.1 (May 20, 2022)

  • Added two more settings for the Edge browser
  • Minor program-internal optimizations

New in W10Privacy 3.8.0.0 (Oct 9, 2021)

  • Addition of a data protection option as well as a setting (-> Tweak), via which the automatic Windows maintenance can be deactivated. Thanks to Peter for pointing this out!
  • Minor changes regarding compatibility with Windows 11. So far no fundamental problems with Windows 11 could be determined, "it looks so far clean"!

New in W10Privacy 3.7.0.9 (Sep 20, 2021)

  • Added an option to deactivate the suggestion function for paths in Explorer. Thanks to Jens for this tip!
  • Removal of a redundant option to deactivate the background functionality of the Edge browser. Thanks to John for the hint!

  • Added an option to block the "Microsoft Edge" automatic installation
  • Correction of an error which in the "System Apps" tab did not result in a preliminary determination (gray checkbox) for the first entry

New in W10Privacy 3.7.0.6 (May 17, 2021)

  • Change of order in the course of determining the user SID. First an attempt is now made to determine this via "whoami" and the registry is only used in the event of an error. This has the positive effect that when the application is started in the user context, there is no longer a UAC query. At this point, many thanks to Sopor for the problem analysis, which was a bit more complex!

New in W10Privacy 3.7.0.5 (May 12, 2021)

  • Minor adjustments with regard to the soon to be released Windows 10 Release 21H1
  • Various minor bug fixes and optimizations

  • The option to specify the size of the W10Privacy window has been integrated under "Settings".
  • It is now also possible to freely choose the colors for highlighting the different settings: For this, the HTML color code must be determined as a hex value and stored in the W10Privacy "Settings" (the HTML color codes can e.g. . can be viewed here: https://www.farbtabelle.at/grosse-farbtabelle)

New in W10Privacy 3.7.0.3 (Dec 28, 2020)

  • On systems prior to Windows 10 20H2, the settings for the old Edge browser are now displayed correctly.

New in W10Privacy 3.6.1.0 (Nov 18, 2020)

  • Under certain circumstances it can be useful to set user-specific edge policies that deviate from the global settings. The possibility of setting these settings has now been integrated, but as far as I was able to test this, the user-specific edge policies can only be set for administrative accounts.
  • Settings for the old Edge browser are no longer displayed for systems from 20H2
  • Integration of further app-related settings for phone calls as well as radio technology

New in W10Privacy 3.6.0.1 (Oct 29, 2020)

  • The policies stored for the new Edge browser did not work in the user context (HKEY_CURRENT_USER). These settings have now been adapted so that administrative authorizations are required for them (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE).

New in W10Privacy 3.5.1.0 (Oct 25, 2020)

  • Marginal internal change related to the recently released Windows 10 20H2
  • Extension to include an uninstallation option for the "Cortana" app. Since I never even considered using the app, I didn't notice that it has been natively uninstallable since Windows 10 2004. Many thanks to Björn for the valuable tip!

  • Change in the rating of two firewall settings based on user feedback.

New in W10Privacy 3.4.0.1 (Apr 13, 2020)

  • Troubleshoot the installer: In the event that an installation path deviating from the standard was used, this generated an invalid deinstallation entry (however, the deinstallation "Uninstall.exe" stored in the W10Privacy path was still possible).

New in W10Privacy 3.4.0.0 (Jan 18, 2020)

  • W10Privacy is now available in the form of an installer. This means that the software installed on a regular system can also be uninstalled. The program settings of an "installed W10Privacy" are saved in the AppData subfolder "W10Privacy" of the respective user (usually C: Users user name AppData Roaming W10Privacy). Of course, the program can still be operated in portable mode (this can be selected in the installer). The basic idea for the implementation of the installer, the necessary scripts as well as the new graphics & icons were given to me with the kind support of PeterK. provided (this is known for the first-class Winamp skin "Quinto Black CT" [https://winaero.com/blog/quinto-black-ct-v3-2-for-winamp-is-out-with-ton -of-changes]). PeterK. has spared no effort here and has given active support. At this point I would like to thank you again! 👌

  • Microsoft changed the location of the file "MicrosoftEdgeCP.exe", which is used by the edge browser, to the System32 folder within the last updates. This fact has now been taken into account so that W10Privacy re-creates the appropriate firewall rule.
  • Just for the sake of completeness, due to various inquiries: W10Privacy is, as far as possible, already compatible with Windows 10 1903 since version 3.3.0.0.

If this setting has been set, they will now be displayed as inactive with the new W10Privacy version. The settings must be reactivated accordingly.
  • Removal of one of the two options for denying app access to diagnostic functions ("_app_ccess_diagnose"). Due to a typo, the second setting was listed as a separate setting. Many thanks to Joachim for the hint!

  • Integration of the task "CacheTask": This is started on every system during the user logon and in some cases ensures high hard disk utilization. Reliable information on the purpose and purpose of the task could not be determined. The effects of disabling the task are therefore unclear. Information, observations, etc. can be sent to kontakt [at] winprivacy.de. Thanks to Kevin for the hint!

This is only applied to special Windows versions (see here: http://winaero.com/blog/diagnostic-usage-data-windows-10/), but changes to the usual versions "Windows 10 Pro" as well as " Windows 10 Home "does not work. Thanks to JoGeJen for the suggestion.

  • W10Privacy automatically creates a backup of the settings in the file "W10Privacy_Settings_First_Start.ini" (this does not apply to the CommandLine mode). This can be used in the future as long as the creation of a backup configuration was not done manually, in order to change to the original settings (many thanks to Kurt for the meaningful reference!).

  • By using the "Save As ..." - option the last used configuration file will be retained.
  • In the command line mode can now use the parameter in "/ config" path to be used configuration file to specify dates. Alternatively, however, the previous mode (name of a configuration file, which is located in W10Provacy folder) are used.

New in W10Privacy 2.1.1.0 (Mar 21, 2016)

  • The search for Windows updates is now available via command line possible: The parameter "/ s check updates" W10Privacy can in silent mode are started, so that it searches the connection for updates (advance must, if not already happened before, of course, for the will check for updates necessary conditions by Gui set). If updates are detected, the known window appears in which the updates to be installed can be selected.
  • The search for Windows updates on W10Privacy is now faster because defaults are not checked when fake WSUS, but directly at "Windows Update" to update. In networks that are actually providing a WSUS server, this option is disadvantageous, however, so the search for updates in a "fake WSUS" If enabled. A "standard user" should not select this option, the search will take about a little longer.

New in W10Privacy 2.1.0.2 (Mar 18, 2016)

New in W10Privacy 2.1.0.0 (Mar 14, 2016)

  • Elimination of the need of Psexec.exe tools for identifying / uninstalling system apps, and find, download and install Windows updates on W10Privacy. The Psexec.exe tool is therefore no longer needed and, if present, is removed from the W10Privacy folder. Also, the parameter "psexec_mode" in the W10Privacy.ini can be removed. I hope that within W10Privacy all the instructions and messages related to the Psexec.exe tool are adjusted. It may also be that the above two functions on systems that previously had difficulties now undergo clean! I can confirm this, at least for two systems! The less W10Privacy relies on external tools, the easier the problem analysis. If one of the conditions for the Windows Updates Search is not given, a meaningful message now appears (previously a blank message box was shown).
  • Update of the French text

New in W10Privacy 2.0.0.3 (Mar 14, 2016)

  • Unfortunately, the automatic update is not still working in v.2.0.0.1. Some further adjustments are made so that the update of W10Privacy v.2.0.0.3 upwards would work again!

  • Interim update of Jimdo layout download links apparently have changed. This now leads to the fact that the automatic update of v.1.8.0.6 fails (it is instead the same version downloaded). Starting from this version of the new link is included, so that future updates should work again.
  • The designation of progress in the Windows updates search should now be correct in all languages.
  • Complement the French texts.

New in W10Privacy 2.0.0.0 (Feb 20, 2016)

  • Integration of the new "Windows Updates (search / download / installation)": it is now possible to prevent updates, nevertheless you can search via W10Privacy for available updates and then selectively install them. This means that installing unwanted updates (such as the automatic Windows 10 Update of Win8.1 on Win10) can be selectively disabled. Before using this function ("Extras") it would not hurt to look in the updated manual!

New in W10Privacy 1.8.0.1 (Nov 26, 2015)

  • Added a new option: "Disable chargeable WLAN services" in the "Network" (was unfortunately relatively expensive because Microsoft has come up with the wonderful idea, "unable to connect to the proposed public hotspots" for three different settings [, "No connection with WLAN networks restore my contacts "and" disable Chargeable wireless services "] to use a single registry value! W10Privacy changes only one of these settings at each run. If all three settings are changed, W10Privacy must be run three times over).
  • Correction in the W10Privacy_HOSTS.txt and W10Privacy_HOSTS_Light.txt. Enables and disables the options if necessary once to let remove the faulty host names from the hosts.
  • Revision of texts

New in W10Privacy 1.8.0.0 (Nov 17, 2015)

  • Integration of new apps that have been added to the current Windows 10 November update from Microsoft: "Telephone", "Skype Video", "Sway", "Twitter" and "Candy Crush"! Important: W10Privacy shows said Apps partly as uninstalled, even though they appear in the Start menu. This is because the Microsoft command "Get-AppxPackage" each installed apps lists only partly greatly delayed (and thus W10Privacy then assumed that these were not present). One possible reason for this strange behavior could be that the respective apps have not yet been fully installed, the respective icon is displayed in advance but the Start menu. Real unnerving to observe that Microsoft is unable partly simplest things correctly display / output!
  • Putting Windows 10 Threshold 2 completely new on and off all offered in the installation menu privacy settings, so W10Privacy not showed in version 1.7.0.0 possibly already disabled options as an active part. This is because Microsoft now registry keys, as long as the settings have been disabled already in the Installation menu, sometimes not explicitly created and W10Privacy therefore assumed that the options are not set (z. B. the "Using the Mailer ID" ). This behavior was included in the current W10Privacy version so that at selected settings in the event that no registry key exists, it is assumed that the setting is set.
  • Updating the blockable IP addresses

New in W10Privacy 1.7.0.0 (Nov 12, 2015)

  • From the current version W10Privacy already displayed to the user settings (in the "Cache.ini" file) are recorded. Based on this show future W10Privacy versions when each first start newly added settings with the additional text "*** NEW ***" on. This makes it easy for users to identify the meantime newly added settings on the fly.

  • Update of the blockable IP addresses (also the LIGHT IP addresses)
  • Bugfix: when blockable IP addresses are activated via the firewall rules, the first firewall rule is indeed applied correctly; this is not correctly detected by W10Privacy. This issue should no longer occur now.

New in W10Privacy 1.6.1.3 (Oct 23, 2015)

  • Update / correction of texts
