Application work fine in Apple Rosetta 2 emulator. We plan to provide an universal package for MacOS later 7.4.0 release, as we needs new hardware to test the port to the new Apple ARM architecture.
  • All bundles introduce a new tool to check online releases, following stable or development workflows. An automatic download and installation are proposed to simplify users life. A release notes viewer is proposed to list last changes provided by new versions.
  • All bundles uses KF5 framework version 5.78 and OpenCV version 4.4. They are re-compiled automatically every days on the evening with the last changes done by developers for testing purpose. Of course this pre-release version must be installed with caution and not be used in production.

  • Faces Detection, Faces Recognition, and Faces Workflow:
  • The neural network to process face detection have been a huge effort with this release.
  • We use a new data model named Yolo. More faces on same images can be detected with complex shot conditions. The processing speed have been reduced and the older bugs about the wrong memory allocation definitively fixed. The algorithm to detect red eyes gain to use Yolo data model from face engine. Red eyes detection is now better especially when eyes are not tainted in pure red.
  • To optimize application size, as face data models are huge files, they have been removed from application and are downloadable on demand instead. The neural network used to process automatic recognition of faces supports clustering to increase performances with group of faces.
  • Recognition efficiency is now better than expected, but of course you need to teach a little bit the engine with manual assignments before. Another part where a lots of works have been done is the faces workflow, and especially the graphical interface and widgets. We follow the users feedbacks to simplify experience while using face tags everywhere. We review the ergonomy and add guidance for new users while tagging and manage faces.

New in digiKam 5.2.0 (Sep 26, 2016)

  • After a second release 5.1.0 published one month ago, the digiKam team is proud to announce the new release 5.2.0 of digiKam Software Collection. This version introduces a new bugs triage and some fixes following new feedback from end-users.
  • This release introduce also a new red eyes tool which automatize the red-eyes effect reduction process. Faces detection is processed on whole image and a new algorithm written by a Google Summer of Code 2016 student named Omar Amin is dedicated to recognize shapes and try to found eyes with direct flash reflection on retina.
  • This new tool is available in Image Editor and also in Batch Queue Manager to be able to process a set of photos at the same time. The algorithm have been very optimized for speed efficiency and for small memory fingerprint. End user can adjust just a single parameter about the reducing level of retina red color to the average of blue and green channels. The default threshold have been tested successfully with a trial and error basis from a large data-set of images. So typically, no user interaction are need with this new version of this tool compared to older one, where no red eyes detection was performed, and a lots of manual settings was required to process this kind of correction.

New in digiKam 4.12.0 (Aug 9, 2015)

  • This release is the result of another huge bugs triage on KDE bugzilla where more than 145 files have been closed. Thanks to Maik Qualmann who maintain KDE4 version while KF5 port and GSoC 2015 projects are in progress. Both are planed to be completed before end of this year.
  • As with 4.11.0, this new release comes with OSX PKG installers for Mountain Lion, Maverick, and Yosemite. Note that you must considerate digiKam under OSX as beta stage, not stable as under Linux. Some dysfunctions have been identified and fixed with this release. PKG installer includes last Exiv2 0.25, LibRaw 0.16.2, and LensFun 0.3.1 which do not exist yet in Macports repository. Exiv2 includes huge fixes about video support which can crash digiKam, and Libraw/Lensfun add new recent camera supports. In the future, we plan to include Hugin CLI tools too required at run-time by Panorama and ExpoBlending tools.

New in digiKam 4.11.0 (Aug 9, 2015)

  • This release is the result of huge bugs triage on KDE bugzilla where more than 250 files have been closed as duplicate, invalid, or upstream states. Thanks to Maik Qualmann who maintain KDE4 version while KF5 port and GSoC 2015 projects are in progress. Both are planed to be completed before end of this year.
  • With this 4.11.0 version, we hacked packaging release scripts for OSX. PKG installers are now available officially for Mountain Lion, Maverick, and Yosemite. Each one require one day of tunes and compilations with virtual machines. We have tried with older OSX releases, as Lion, but due to the huge list of ports to compile, some dependencies are not compilable as well, and require a lots of manual adjustments. So, we have limited OSX versions to support voluntary.
  • Under OSX, digiKam bundle package built with Macports is installed in a dedicated place /opt/digikam to prevent all conflicts with a standard Macports install. It will be easy to uninstall too, but deleting this directory as well. Later we will add a simpler way to perform uninstall task, but it's not a priority for the moment. Note that if you have installed and older digiKam version, installing a new one will uninstall previous one safety.
  • digiKam4.11.0-OSX
  • Considerate digikam under OSX as beta stage, not stable as under Linux, but at least now, you can install it on your Apple computer in few seconds instead to wait some hours of compilation. The PKG prepare bundle background KDE used by digiKam to a suitable configuration and environment. Standard Macports install do not tune well all these points for digiKam. The OSX hack will continue with next KDE4 releases of digiKam. Some dysfunctions have been already identified and we will try to fix it step by step.
  • Outside the fact that main components under OSX are managed through Macports to build PKG, we have tune compilation of last Exiv2 0.25, LibRaw 0.16.2, and LensFun 0.3.1 which do not exist yet in Macports repository. Exiv2 includes huge fixes about video support which can crash digiKam, and Libraw/Lensfun add new recent camera supports. In the future, we plan to include Hugin CLI tools too required at run-time by Panorama and ExpoBlending tools.
  • The OSX digiKam PKG is not an Apple signed bundle installer. To do it we must pay 99$ by year which is very expensive for an Open Source project. If your computer is protected by Apple GateKeeper, you can bypass safety this protection at install time without to touch your computer settings. Just follow simple instructions given in this tutorial.
  • You can consult the huge list of the issues closed in digiKam 4.11.0 available through the KDE Bugs-tracking System.
  • The digiKam software collection tarball, OSX, and Windows installer can be downloaded from the KDE mirrors.
