Even from Serious Sam First Encounter, the game developed by CroTeam announced itself to be a very serious candidate to the title of "The game with the largest number of monsters simultaneously on the screen", and even if the team from CroTeam has broken the record with Serious Sam Second Encounter, it looks like what we've seen in the first two titles will be nothing compared to what's in store for us in Serious Sam II.

The people from CroTeam, a Croatian game developer, have wasted no opportunity to underline the fact that this is the real sequel, Serious Sam Second Encounter being more of an add-on, and that only now we'll see just how serious Sam really is.

Serious across 40 levels

Announced for this fall, Serious Sam II will function much as the previous two titles did, according to the motto "Pause your mind and play until no one's left alive in the level".

Serious Sam has won over its players exactly due to the fact that it never pretended to be more than a shooter, where all it counts is just how many monster you can kill, and, of course, how you kill them. Add extraordinary graphics to this idea and you've got yourself a game.

The recipe will also be applied in the case of Serious Sam II, with the obvious changes in graphics, because several years have passed since the first game was launched. We'll also face some new monsters, because some of them really died in the first two games, and Sam's arsenal will also be buffed up.

This time, Sam will travel across 40 levels in 7 worlds, and CroTeam assured both the fans of the series and the newcomers that the levels will be long enough so that one night is not enough to go through all of them. Besides these, continuing the trend initiated by Doom and other FPSs from the Jurassic era of the genre, there will be all sorts of secret levels, passages filled with monsters leading to secret areas and so on.

CroTeam have decided that some of the 40 levels should be at least memorable, so there will be one level set in a world of giants, one inspired by Hong Kong (as CroTeam imagined an alien Hong Kong) and another one set in a planet populated by Elvis fans. The lava level, one of the FPSs sweethearts, whether is related to the main story or not, will also be present.

CroTeam has promised that it will have quite enough twists and turns of the storyline, so that the gamers won't get bored killing the waves of monster coming in from every direction, charging with their heads (the bomb killers, which screamed as they attacked, will now have bombs instead of heads and are once again reporting for duty), hands, horns or any other anatomical part they've been fitted with.

And if you thought that the boss-monsters from Serious Sam First and Second Encounter were huge, you should know that they are considered only medium sized by CroTeam, and that now the appropriate size is "Ohhhhhhhhh, My God I'm going to die".

More serious weapons

With great power?sorry?with new monsters, come new weapons, seems to be CroTeam's other motto, and even if Sam will have some of the weapons we're used to, this doesn't mean that there's not place for upgrades.

And there should be, especially considering the fact that in some levels there will be between 200 and 300 monsters crawling on the map. So, beside the chaingun, rocket launcher, double-barreled shotgun, grenade launcher and sniper rifle, Serious Sam will also get a sword, which he can also use for throwing metal discs at its enemies. The mini-guns and turrets will also be around in Serious Sam II, as well as a parody of any interesting weapon you've ever seen in a FPS.

Seeing that lately, any major FPS brings in the story some vehicles that can be driven, smashed into a wall or used by the hero to run over the monsters, Serious Sam is not going to simply walk across the 40 levels.

And seeing that Sam never behaved as the other heroes did, neither will his cars. One of the vehicles, called deathball, is a huge ball which can be moved around by Sam, crushing all the enemies that happen to cross his path. Another means of transportation will be a hover-vehicle, which will be used by our hero in certain levels.

Another interesting development from CroTeam is the fact that Sam will be able to interact with the game's environment. Thus, following the motto "Let's set the world on fire", it looks like there's going to be a level with wooden buildings, and Sam will be able to keep warm by setting them on fire.

It's not yet known whether Serious Sam II will also have a multiplayer component, but since the game has always been a very funny one, nobody misses a network combat. All we have to do now is to wait for the 3'rd quarter of the year to get as serious as possible.
