Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us episode series has so far delivered some great moments inspired by the Fables comic books and, after we got to meet the main characters in Episode 1 and their different conflicts in Episode 2, the third chapter has just been released.
The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile promises to finally start shedding light on the many mysteries presented by the game's first two chapters, as well as bring some more confrontations between the protagonist, Bigby, and the suspects he has in the case of the Fabletown murders.
Does the Crooked Mile manage to elevate the series further or should we walk on a different road? Let's find out.
Bear in mind that I will be discussing spoilers about the first two episodes, so don't read on if you haven't played Faith or Smoke and Mirrors.
In case you forgot, The Wolf Among Us focuses on a small New York neighborhood called Fabletown, which is comprised of different fairy tale characters who escaped their world and entered the human one due to a mysterious villain called the Adversary. There's one mayor, one administrator, and one sheriff, the latter being the main protagonist, Bigby Wolf (aka the Big Bad Wolf).
In previous episodes, a string of murders started happening in the relatively safe settlement and, after some encounters with less than heroic Fables, it seems pretty obvious that the perpetrator is Ichabod Crane, who seems to have a twisted interest in Snow White.
As you can imagine, however, things are even more complex and it's up to Bigby, with the help of Snow White, to uncover Crane's allies, as well as coerce from other Fables more details about the whole mystery.
The story has some interesting twists, a few surprising appearances, and the ending is dramatic, to say the least, and puts a lot of faith in the ability of the last two chapters to bring a conclusion to the whole thing.
Episode 3 is filled with quite a lot more confrontations and tense situations than previous chapters, and players will have some tough choices ahead of them when it comes to making Bigby interact with others.
There are also a few more actual gameplay sequences, although they mostly involve just scavenging around different environments for clues and other things. The dialog moments are well done and you can lead a conversation to quite a few interesting conclusions.
While in past episodes there were just a couple of dramatic choices you could have made, this time around there are quite a few more, so you have plenty of reasons to replay the chapter and see what other choices you can make and how they impact the following events.
The visuals are still quite good, managing to retain the great style seen in the first two episodes. Bigby's sort of werewolf transformation looks pretty nice but the animations still feel a bit stiff in some situations. The soundtrack is still rather good, while the voice acting is top-notch, as usual.
The Good
- More gameplay sequences
- Intense situations
- More details revealed about the main mystery
The Bad
- Animations still a bit stiff
- Players are still forced into some decisions
