Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC is a one on one copy of the console game that made a splash one year ago. At least when it comes to story and gameplay that is. Graphics-wise though it's a completely different story, one that I would rather avoid telling if it wouldn't be so important for the purpose of this review.

The first time I played Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 4 I thought the game would look amazing on PC. However, at that time, there were no rumors about a possible PC release, so I decided to completely remove that thought and focus on finishing the game on the console.

Now that the PC version is out, I have mixed feelings about it. Not because the game doesn't look as stunning as I'd expected, but because of the many technical issues that marred the Red Dead Redemption 2 release on PC.

Even now, a prolonged Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay session is a bit of a gamble, which is why I'd suggest saving the game every hour if you plan to buy the PC version (or already have). It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause of these issues and it looks like Rockstar hasn't been able to fix them three weeks after the game's release.

After two patches I still get booted out from the game from time to time, especially when I play more than two hours, which is incredibly counterproductive for a game so immersive as Red Dead Redemption 2. It's like a cold shower after a hot day in the sun, that's how I feel every time my game crashes.

Despite all that, I can't help falling in love with Rockstar's portrayal of America's fading frontier. A second time. If I were to highlight the worst thing about Red Dead Redemption 2 is the opening. Although the prologue is meant to show you the ropes, the pacing is incredibly slow and tedious.

I'd also like to add that if this is your first playthrough, you should start exercising your long-term memory because in Red Dead Redemption 2 all of your keyboard's buttons are shortcuts for various actions in the game. Well, at least make sure that you don't start shooting in towns because in Red Dead Redemption 2 that can prove to be fatal more often than not.

Newcomers to the franchise will find Red Dead Redemption 2 the perfect game to start their adventures since this is a prequel to the first installment in the series launched nine years ago. The game follows the adventures of the Van der Linde gang and you'll be taking the role of Arthur Morgan, a petty criminal and outlaw who was raised by Dutch, the leader of the band.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game like no other in the fact that it doesn't force you to follow the main story to enjoy your time. Instead, Rockstar focused on recreating America's unforgiving heartland starting to the flora and fauna and continuing with the clothing, weaponry, and activities specific to the end of the Wild West era.

This is the game that made me realize that I could be a good hunter and a great poker player. Another thing that Rockstar gets right is that all these activities don't feel like chores at all, on the contrary, you'll want to spend time hunting that legendary animal or band of criminals that have bounties on their heads.

Rockstar managed to build an entire universe where you can live and act like a gunslinger without any compromises. Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a conclusion after 40 or 50 hours, but only if you're pursuing just the main story, which it's almost impossible. But then there's Red Dead Online, the multiplayer aspect that lets people group together for the same western experience.

The Good

  • Outstanding depiction of the Western era
  • Compelling story
  • Great graphics and soundtrack
  • Exceptional voice acting

The Bad

  • Technical issues
  • Overcomplicated control layout
  • The opening sequence is too slow-paced

Conclusion

Red Dead Redemption 2 deserves praise for the huge amount of details it uses to recreate a fascinating world that disappeared 100 years ago. It's the perfect ballad of a gunslinger, an epilogue of a dying era, and an outstanding portrayal of America's fading frontier.

If not for the technical issues, I would certainly recommend any gamer to buy Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. I still do recommend that game, but I'd wait for Rockstar to iron out all the issues that are plaguing the PC version, which hopefully won't take long.

I'm quite sure that Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't redefine the open-world genre, but it surely brings it to a much higher level. And it's not just through sheer size that it does that, but by combining writing, visuals, music, voice acting, and gameplay mechanics to deliver an engrossing experience that sometimes is better than the one in the real world.
