My poisoned blade is fast but doesn’t deal a lot of damage in one combo. So, I dance around three enemies, focused on making sure that none of their attacks hits its target while chipping away at their significant health bars. An ice blast manages to stun two of them, which gives me time to deliver a lot of strikes without fear of retaliation.

Naira finishes up this group of enemies and it’s time to deeper into this level. I’ve located a teleporting pad that will bring me up to the surface once I’m done. She also benefits from a boost station, and I chose a power that gives her a chance to get a small health orb by taking out enemies. I still have a health boost and an adrenaline shot that I can use if things get hairy.

And they quickly do, as I enter a small space to face a group that includes a techno-wizard of sorts. He projects an invulnerability bubble and I have to focus my attacks on him. It also means working hard to jump and slide to avoid attacks from his henchmen while overwriting my instinct to strike them. It takes time to eliminate my main target and I take quite a bit of damage. I might soon return to the Citadel to invest in some useful new upgrades.

Trinity Fusion is both developed and published by Angry Mob Games. I played the game on the PC using Steam. It is also offered on the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X and S, and older devices from Microsoft and Sony. The title mixes action and platforming with a rogue-lite structure.

This is a multiverse story centered on the three different characters and the worlds they come from. An Underworld, Overworld, and Hyperworld were designed to work in concert to provide resources, art, tech, and machinery for a Prime reality. Things go wrong and this utopia crumbles.

Each of these realms feels unique, a different take on classic science-fiction visions. The threats they face (robot uprising for the Overworld, for example) are a little rote. As catastrophe strikes the only way to save the universe is to rebuild them all into one reality. Maya, psychically linked to three alternate selves (Altara, Kera, and Naira), is our heroine.

Trinity Fusion is a fast and deadly game. Player avatars are nimble, able to use double jumps and slides from the outset, mixing them when needed to reach secluded platforms and get out of the way of enemies. A melee attack can be used freely and charges up an energy bar, which powers a ranged strike ability that deals more damage and can be charged.

Combine both to deal with a wide variety of opponents. They tend to attack in groups, both close-up and at range, but don’t follow players if they break contact. It’s easy to underestimate them and move in too aggressively. Try to get a clear idea of what you are facing and how each type can be eliminated quickly.

It’s crucial to watch and learn attack patterns to avoid incoming strikes and to find the best moment to use the secondary attack. Characters have no innate ability to heal, and consumables are pretty rare. As they move through the world, they will also find Amplifiers, which give them a situational bonus. A more significant combat upgrade is unlocked when three of a kind are activated.

Players gain power, which opens up improved weapon drops, very useful when dealing with bigger enemy groups and bosses. Each level also features a unique machine that allows gamers to fuse two of the characters, creating an improved fighter with extra abilities. Make sure to pick up all the blue and gold orbs.

When their chosen character loses all health, players are returned to a hub that exists outside of the multiverse. Here players can talk with a cast of supporting characters to extract a little lore and visit the pods to activate one of their other selves. But, more importantly, this is the place to unlock psychic upgrades, designed to make subsequent runs easier. Get a health boost, an upgrade to critical strikes, and other improvements.

Trinity Fusion is very good at giving players variety and choices. The three core characters offer different approaches and the weapons and items they pick along the way add variety. The many Amplifiers then add further opportunities to aim for a specific playstyle.

However, it takes a lot of experimentation to discover the combinations that work best, which can lead to some frustration, especially when combined with difficulty spikes. The game’s world has a strong premise but somehow the various worlds feel disjointed.

Trinity Fusion is good-looking for its genre, with snappy animation and cool combat moves, well-designed characters and some decent levels. Its presentation is pretty traditional, even though the science fiction universe allowed the developer space for some extra weirdness. Neither of the locations creates a sense of place but the monsters do look unique.

The sound design is also decent. There’s voice acting for the big narrative moments, which is a little wooden but mostly works. The combat sound effects underline the deadly nature of all encounters, and, after a while, I found it easy to recognize opponents by the noises they make. The soundtrack is also good, keyed to enhance the science-fiction vibes.

The Good

  • Strong combat mechanics
  • Amplifier variety
  • Hyper system
  • Addictive gameplay loop

The Bad

  • Familiar narrative
  • Some difficulty spikes
  • Doesn’t fully take advantage of its premise

Conclusion

Trinity Fusion is built around a combat system that’s easy to understand but hard to master. I like the focus on picking the best mix of weapons and Amplifiers, creating synergies that make handling both groups and individuals easy. The rogue-lite elements are not very deep, but they offer players extra options to tweak their playstyle. Choice matters and there’s plenty of space for experimentation.

The narrative is just interesting enough to keep players engaged in the long term. The apocalyptic theme should have been used to increase the weirdness level of both worlds and enemies. Trinity Fusion has good mechanics and i8t will welcome both newcomers, thanks to the Hyper system, and veterans.
