When I find myself in a situation when I need to know the correct formula for surface area or volume for any geometric figure, I usually have to choose between two options. Either I start thinking about that formula and try to remember it from high-school, or I start looking for a math book and find the correct formula there. Neither of the options is good for me because, in both situations, a lot of time would be lost before finding an answer. Travis East and his product, Geometry X, give a third option; you won't have to remember anything, search for any math book or start making all those complicated calculus. All you have to do is fill in the blanks, press the Calculate button and you will find out the correct answer for your math problem right away.

The looks

This program doesn't impress anyone with its looks. Right from the start you will see a simple rectangular-shaped panel from where you can select the category you are interested in. To make it easier to use, Travis East divided the panel in three sections. In the first section, you may choose what type of area you want to calculate (2D, 3D Area & Volume, etc..). In the second one, you can select the geometrical figure you want to calculate the area or volume for. You have at you disposal all the known geometrical figures, so finding what you are looking for will not be a problem.

On the third side of the panel, you will see the drawing of the geometrical figure you have chosen. So, as you can see, the interface is extremely easy to use, but unfortunately you can't do anything about the color because it's the only one available; but if you like blue, there will be no problem. In fact, you will find out that you can't change anything in this program because there are no features or preferences to play with.

The Works

As I said before, there are no menus, features or preferences you can work with in order to change the program a little bit. So, for those who like playing with options, this program is not for you. You may ask "If I can't change this program, what can I do with it?" It's very simple actually. You can do various calculi with geometrical theorems. You can start with the Pythagorean Theorem, continue with 2D or 3D Area and Volumes and finish with more complicated things like Arcs and Sectors. This program has everything, and you can learn everything, fastly and easily, about any geometrical figure.

In order to make the program understandable for all people around the world, you can convert everything as you wish from inches to feet and millimeters, or from millimeters to inches. For example: I choose 3D Areas & Volume from the first section of the panel and the Sphere from the second section. As you can see, starting with the third image, a 3D sphere drawing has appeared on the third section. To calculate volume or surface area you either double-click on the second side or a simple right-click will do the work.

A new panel has appeared and on the left you have the mathematic formulas for Volume and Surface Areas and on the right you can see a bigger 3D drawing of the same sphere. On that drawing you can enter any value you want, after that press the Calculate button and you instantly receive the values for Volume and Surface Area. You may choose to export this data, but if you are not happy with the current metric conversion you may change it in any form you want (inches, feet or millimeters), just press the small round button on the bottom left side of the panel and the conversion panel will appear.

The Good

Travis East made a very easy-to-use program, even though we are talking about a math program. You select the geometrical figure you want, fill in the blanks with the values you have, press calculate and instantly you know the value you want. You can't make it easier. The geometrical figures are well divided in six categories. You can easily get to the one you are interested in. So, when you have a math problem that includes volumes and surface areas, Geometry is the answer to your wishes.

The Bad

I, for one, haven't found many things to complain about Geometry. Many users get bored really fast of the program's interface, so they would like to change it as often as possible. Geometry doesn't have this option, actually it doesn't have any option to play with. What you see the first time is what you get, nothing more and nothing less. I hope that in the future version Geometry X will be enhanced with interface options and some 3D animations.

The Truth

Geometry does exactly what it was made for. It makes calculi of volumes and surface areas and nothing more. It's a simple program but very efficient and that's why I love it. With this program I wouldn't have problems at all calculating volumes and surface areas. So, if you need it, use it. You won't be disappointed.
