No one likes to lose a hot deal, but when it comes to Amazon.com you have an ally that can alert you whenever a product you wish to purchase is available at a lower price; or when it is in stock. AmazonWatcher is a simple monitoring tool designed to produce notifications upon the availability of an item on Amazon or when the price drops below a user defined value.

The application is tailored to support all Amazon stores and it can even send an email to let you know of the modifications.

AmazonWatcher is a free product that installs in no time and resides in the system tray area of the desktop. Installation does not take too long to complete, and even if it is a freebie, the application will not push third party software on your machine.

The interface is pretty clean, with all the buttons and options in the right places. At the beginning it’s a lot of blank space but as soon as you add the items you want the program to watch everything will turn into an informational panel.

All the items you want to be watched are listed in the upper part of the application window and the options for monitoring are in the lower, right hand panel of the screen. As soon as a listed item is selected AmazonWatcher will automatically retrieve some brief info about it: Amazon Standard Identification Number, third party prices (both new and used) and the availability of the product.

The item list is also filled with some of this information, but it also includes the details of the “stakeout” and the reaction triggered by the modification.

Adding the products in the list is an easy task because the program lets you search the Amazon.com database in an extremely comfortable fashion. Type in the name of the product (or part of it), choose the store you want to search and hit “Enter”. The results window, which also dubs as a search panel as well, pops up and you get to pick the product.

From the search window you can navigate straight to the product’s page on Amazon.com or add it to your shopping cart with a click of a button.

Monitoring options at your disposal do not come in great numbers, but cover the necessary. As mentioned earlier, you can enable the app to emit a notification when a monitored item is in stock or when the price drops lower than the value you set. The latter applies for third party sellers as well.

As for the notification possibilities, AmazonWatcher is capable of opening the product page on Amazon.com in the default browser, or add it to your cart and open checkout page, or send an email to your address.

Audio alerts can be enabled from the configuration panel, where you can also set how often (in minutes) should the app check for modifications regarding the watched product. The sound of the notification is pretty efficient, but in case you want an alarm that runs for longer time than four beeps, you can add any WAV file of your choice.

Additional customization of the software includes running it when Windows starts and automatic minimization to system tray.

AmazonWatcher is quite simple to use and flexible in options. It permits on-demand checks of the products in the list and while in stand-by it uses a measly 16MB of RAM. However, on the downside, it will not start monitoring unless on its own. So, the moment you finish the setup you have to start the process yourself by pressing “Start” button in the toolbar.

For statistical reasons the program can display the price history for a selected item. Thus you can view the price fluctuations for a particular product over a specific period of time.

If you are a hardcore amazon.com user, you know how fast deals come and go. Waiting for the right opportunity to buy a product on Amazon may be both time and effort consuming. But having the products on your wishlist monitored and receiving the good news automatically is definitely a more comfortable approach. AmazonWatcher offers just that, absolutely free of charge.

The Good

It is a program with a simple interface design that provides all the necessary options in the right place. It is easy to configure and work with. The fact that it lets you search for products and get a little more than just basic information on them without having to use the web browser adds to its value.

You can use it for any of Amazon’s international stores. The feedback is prompt and it will check for the changes only as often as you want.

The Bad

You have to manually start the monitoring process after everything is set up. It is not a major drawback, but just worth mentioning.

The Truth

You can manually check for a price change or availability of a product on Amazon.com, but the automatic approach offered by AmazonWatcher spares you the effort. Configuration is simple, the interface is not complicated and it does a great job checking if the price dropped under what you’re willing to pay. On top of it all, it is free of charge and works for all 6 amazon international stores.
