Still that same old RAM problem?

If you're tired of those constant warnings from your computer that you don't have enough memory, maybe it's about time you started thinking about a RAM optimizer. Let's see if BySoft FreeRAM is worth the download.

What BySoft FreeRAM offers

After getting taken to their site to see if I had the latest update, I was on my way to enjoying the wonders that BySoft FreeRAM offers. With this program, you get some cool options that are beneficial for those times when you need a little extra boost in Ram.

You can create an Alarm RAM level that frees up Ram whenever you reach a certain critical point (the default's set to 26Mb). You can then tell it exactly how much memory to free (128Mb by default).

I liked the fact that you can create your own personal shortcut to activate this program whenever you're in the need for the extra boost.

For the users who like to personalize their software, FreeRAM even has a few skins to choose from. The last part I liked was that it gives you the option to set your max/min cache tuning for the Windows 95/98/ME operating systems.

FreeRAM offers a baby blue GUI that's easy to use and visually pleasing. It gives you the options of freeing up some of that RAM that you'd like to see go somewhere else.

It's a pretty straightforward program that's not hard to get the hang of. But it does have some places where it can better itself. Yes the graphs are helpful, the interface is clean, but it lacks some options that could make it better.

A direct tie-in to my taskbar, or a personalized chart showing exactly where my memory allocation is going would be nice. For some inexperienced users, freeing up too much RAM can be detrimental to their systems. So maybe including a warning or a pop-up when a user wants to allocate too much free RAM.

The Good

FreeRAM does the job that it says it can do. It's skinnable and has some Alert options that you can set automatically.

The Bad

Nothing really bad to comment other than it could have a few more features. There don't seem to be any huge improvements from the 3.0 version.

The Truth

The first thing that pops out is that it's freeware and it's freeware that does a pretty good job. BySoft FreeRAM does the job you set it out to do. Give it a try, but when it comes to overall RAM optimizers, I'd have to stick with FreeRAM XP Pro.
