Nowadays, the quick and immediate access to information counts as one of the strongest weapons. The loss of important data or, even worse, the impossibility to access and use it in a specific moment, could bring about significant drawbacks. So, the question arises: what can you do to always have the projects, music, films, managerial data or the lesson plans you need with you? You can use a USB device, but even better that that, and much cheaper, than a stick is a burning CD/DVD tool.

CommandBurner CD/DVD seems to be an interesting choice, especially given that you can download and use it free of charge, without time limitation or the frustrating demo mode. It supports all writable media including CD-R, DVD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+R DL. The main window of the application displays a clean and neatly structured interface that will never pose any difficulties in using it, not even to a beginner.

The first section of the burning console is the Device selection. The application automatically recognizes your installed tools, and you only have to select which one to use in the process of relocating your data. The burner monitors the status and the functionality of the chosen device, and announces you in case it is Ready, Not Ready or Busy for the task.

The Control Drive section allows you to eject or load the CD/ DVD you want to burn, presenting you with the possibility of performing a quick or a full erase. The Burn a disc section provides you with two burning modes: Burn a file or Burn a directory. Naturally, you’ll opt for either according to what you need. Like any burning tool, this one too has a Disc Label option, so you can choose a name/ title for the new CD.

If you created more paths on the CD/DVD, you can specify the location you want your data to be sent to and, this way, your files won’t be added randomly and you will be able to find them quite easy. After adding the file or the directory with your data, you’ll only have to press the Burn button and the application will start doing its job, while also allowing you to monitor the process. If you change your mind and wish to stop the running application, just click on Cancel Burn, and the process will be stopped without losing data or damaging the CD.

The tool also displays the basic info concerning the burnt data, total size of the file/directory, estimated time, or speed. When the burning process is complete, a small window will appear, letting you know that your data has been successfully added to the CD/DVD. Right at the bottom of the console, next to the Show Help button, quite a useful feature is displayed – the Switch to Log view. You can use it to see exactly the actions performed and, should something go wrong, the error will be registered here and you will know precisely where the application failed to complete the task.

The real plus of CommandBurner is the ability to use it from the command line, or through any method that can pass commands to the command line, as is the case with a batch file. The Help document contains all the necessary details and instructions for you to use it with the Windows Run feature. Mainly, you need to open the Run application, and then insert one of the main commands: burn, eject, load, erase or fullerase. The Options can be reached by adding /f [filepath], /d [dirpath], /l [label], /erase, /eject, /fullerase or /noexit. This is a very easy and exact procedure that does not require the GUI of the program at all, being a convenient way to optimize both your time and results.

Overall, this burning tool is worthy of your attention from several points of view: it’s free, very easy to use, handy and fast (especially if you execute it from the command line). Don’t expect it to be a full featured application, because it keeps everything simple and sticks only to the basics. You can’t burn, for example, more files at once, as you need to compile all your data and create a directory because it can only support one file or one directory at a time.

The Good

CommnandBurner comes with everything a fast and reliable application should have, that is, speed and stability. Although it might seem too basic or too simple, you shouldn’t underestimate it. It can help you cover even bigger or more complex projects than a simple music CD or DVD.

The Bad

Nevertheless, in some respects, the application displays an oversimplified character. Your burning possibilities are limited because you can’t add more directories or files at once. A tool that centers mainly on burning CDs should be more capable in this sense. Of course, it is free software but that shouldn’t matter all that much when the primary or basic function of the tool is taken into consideration.

The Truth

Except for the minor flaw regarding the rather limited burning possibilities, this tool is a reliable alternative to other expensive applications that basically do about the same things as this one. It deserves a try, mainly because it can easily compete with a more complex, full featured burner that could easily throw you off track with its crowded, complicated settings and functions.
