When it comes to moving around loads of digital pictures at once everyone appreciates speed and quality. Those attributes become even more sought-after if converting and resizing are needed. With Copy N Size you get all of them in one package.

Mixing photos and other documents in the same folder is something often done by many users for various reasons. Separating the files by type can turn into a necessity if one decides, for example, to store images in a place of their own. Now, if you have several directories with multiple subfolders containing tens, even hundreds of pictures that need to be processed, the difficulty is obvious.

The old-fashioned way implies manually sorting the items by extension, repeated copy and paste operations among directories, a lot of time wasted. A convenient solution that requires minimal effort and can yield even more positive results than you would expect is to resort to a specialized software. Such a piece of kit is Copy N Size and it comes packed in under half of a megabyte.

The application doesn't need to be installed; it will work right out of the box and consists of a simple executable. On the same list of things it won't need you can include purchasing, because this utility comes free of cost for your personal use. This means you get double for nothing: portability, since it leaves no traces behind, and you can keep your money.

Getting around with the commands of the program is easy, they are grouped in the main and only window. There are no complicated configurations to make, but, on the other hand, there are no great looking knobs or switches. Everything is kept simple and almost bare to the bone in an unappealing, very function-oriented interface that cannot even be resized and sits on top of all the running processes.

Appearance aside, you can get to work in no time with Copy N Size. Loading the items can be done in more than one way, depending on what you exactly need at a certain moment. In case you want to simply transfer images with no processing involved, you can activate ''Fast Copy'', drag and drop the folders via Windows Explorer and hit ''Start''. You may also want to set the buffer size to a different value than the default 32 Kb to speed things up. If so, note that the maximum value currently supported is 128 Kb.

With regard to this specific mode, it's worth mentioning that including whole directories to the list can only be realized in this manner. Also, the options for resizing and reformatting will not be taken into consideration while ''Fast Copy'' is used. Another unique feature is the behavior when any of the photos to be copied already exist in the output location. The application will automatically create a backup (. BAK) file, unless you check the ''Overwrite'' box.

When you want to change the dimensions, format and/or name for a set of files, you can still add the directories the fast way, as mentioned above, but also individual pictures. The listed images can be further managed by using the right-click menu that allows you to select the whole batch, remove unwanted pics or paste new ones.

An original and useful function is the context menu integration you can activate and de-activate with a single click. When in service, it will add to the right-click ''Send To'' menu a link to help you load the images on the spot. You should remember to uncheck the box in case you delete the software, otherwise you'll have a redundant and non-functional entry in that menu.

For resizing and converting the photos, Copy N Size comes well equipped with support for many formats, namely JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, ICO, EMF (Enhanced Metafile) and WMF (Windows Metafile). It will also enable you to add prefixes or suffixes to the files you manage and change their dimensions based on width or height, with the largest possible size of 2000 pixels. A great addition you will find in this section are the resampling filters. Seven in all, they allow you to experiment and find the best one you want to apply in order to enhance the picture quality for the converted images.

Once all the configurations are made, you can give the green light and have the task done in a few seconds. Another welcomed feature that comes into play at this point is the pause button that gives you more control over the whole process that can be suspended and resumed at will. After the job is done, a short summary is displayed under the file list, telling you how many pictures have been copied or converted and the duration of the operation.

Insofar as the system resource usage is concerned, the heaviest load is on the processor. Our tests revealed that 50% of the dual-core 1.9 GHz AMD Athlon 64-bit CPU was at work most of the time, while the amount of RAM engaged peaked just under 40 MB from the available 2 GB. Copying the photos was fast enough, for a set of 95 images that weighed in at 133 MB the procedure ended after only 7 seconds.

The Good

This software offers a quite lot and asks nothing in return. A well-thought feature set, great support for many graphical filetypes and easiness in use are the main strong points of this program. It gets the job done quickly and not only does it keep the original quality but it can also help you improve it. Yet another great thing is that you don't need to install a single thing, simply unzip and run the app.

The Bad

The utility loses some points due to its dull GUI, that is impervious to any attempt of resizing it and also set to always be on top of the other running applications. Also, it would have been great to have the possibility of adding folders using the ''Source files'' button instead of Windows Explorer drag and drop. The stress on the system is not to be overlooked because of the high numbers it reaches while working.

The Truth

All in all, Copy N Size provides great value and succeeds in making an opportune compromise, leaving aside eye-candy for processing power. It will most likely surpass your expectations by bringing you more that you'd ask from such a lightweight tool. Small as it may be, this software will copy, rename, resize and resample without twitching and it's hard to resist this combination, especially when it comes for free.
