DAFFTIN Password Keeper's main interface is very well structured, giving you access to all its options and features right away. Here you will find all the tools you need to safely enter and store your passwords with minimum effort.
The main window is divided in three parts to give you a bigger picture when you browse through your groups, passwords and, also, to quickly view the notes attached to each entry.
DAFFTIN Password Keeper uses double encryption for your master password. It utilizes the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) or Rijndael algorithm by default, using a 256-bit key created from the user's master password. Besides Rijndael, the application also uses the Blowfish algorithm to strengthen your password security and assure that all your data is safe no matter what.
The master password used to login into your password database is used only as an encryption / decryption key and is not stored anywhere, so it's imperative for you not to forget it. To be sure that this won't happen, the application gives you the option to write a hint that will point out your master key.
This hint will always be displayed under the master password box in the login screen, so try not to make it obvious and, in any case, do not write your password there. Just choose some words or even a question that will help you remember the master password.
Entering a new password is as simple as completing a form with all the data required to login into your account. Here you can even enter notes for each entry to remind you of specific things you have to do each time you login. If you click the website link, the application will open it in your default browser each time you need it.
If your password will expire after a period of time, you can enter its validity and DAFFTIN Password Keeper will automatically remember you to change it. Here, you can also specify how to paste data into other applications, making it easier to automatically login into your accounts directly from the main window.
There is an inconvenient to this process, although the application can easily fill in the required information, first you need to manually select the ID or User field in order for this to work. For some users this can be annoying and time consuming, but can come in handy when you work with complex passwords that you can't rememeber all the time.
If you have multiple passwords for similar accounts (email clients, internet banking, software passwords, network, etc.), DAFFTIN Password Keeper gives you the possibility to create as many groups and subgroups as you need to categorize and sort all passwords the way you like.
Also, you can easily copy, move and duplicate all your groups and subgroups either by using the options that you get when you right click them or just use drag and drop to move them wherever you want.
If you lack inspiration or just want to use random but powerful passwords, DAFFTIN Password Keeper comes with a built in password generator and even a password list generator that will create a list of unique passwords with a single mouse click.
The software will automatically choose a random combination made of upper and lower case sensitive letters, numbers and special symbols. When you specify the password length, the application will automatically calculate the key size of each password (64-bit, 128-bit, 256-bit etc.) to give you a clue on how strong your password will be.
If you want to backup your database to restore it later, you ca do it manually through the Backup/Restore menu or setup the application to automatically backup all your data on exit. The files will be saved as an ecrypted BAK file that you can only open and view with DAFFTIN Password Keeper.
The application also offers you the possibility to export your password database in HTML or Excel format so you can access it whenever you want without using DAFFTIN Password Keeper.
And that's not all, with DAFFTIN Password Keeper you can also carry your passwords on a USB Stick. This is available from the Tools menu and will facilitate the installation of the software with all its settings and database entries on a portable device.
Even if it's a Shareware, the price for the registered version is a little high as the nag screen can become really annoying after some time.
