File sharing is not exactly a new idea and it is not like there aren’t already service you can appeal to in order to send data to a friend. SendGenie adds to the file sharing services and allows you to initiate the process by simply dragging your data to its interface.

Currently the application is in beta stage and can be used free of charge for now, but we have no information on whether the service will be paid once the final adjustments are made and it hits stable version. Installing the application is not a complicated thing and if you follow the instructions you’ll find yourself looking at a login window.

Obviously, you have the possibility to create a free account in order to try the application. The entire procedure requires you to provide only with your name, a valid email address and a password to protect the account. We received the email with the validation link almost instantly.

The interface is rather simple, fitting in only the absolutely necessary elements and features that make sending of the data more comfortable. As soon as SendGenie is on the system you’ll notice that it also places a widget (called “drop zone”) on the desktop. Its functionality is the same as the main application window of the program, but it is a smaller, less intrusive element to have on the desktop.

Almost all the options are available in the top right hand part of the application window, but there is more to be discovered by right-clicking the widget. It practically allows you to control the entire application with the least effort possible.

Loading up the files you want to share is done by simply dragging and dropping it in the “drop zone” or in the main application window. Another way to do it is to use the “Paste” button, which unloads into the SendGenie any data available in Windows Clipboard. The classic approach that allows you to browse for the items is also supported.

For more comfortable usage SendGenie brings to the table the possibility to build up lists with contact details of the friends you want to share the data with. Furthermore, it allows you to organize the entries into groups. You can create as many groups as you want, but, on the downside, the contacts will always be available in two locations, the one you place it in and the original “All” group (this is the place where you add all the contacts and then you can move them to different groups).

The principle driving SendGenie is easy to follow. All the data is uploaded to an online repository and the receiver gets a notification email with the download link of the file(s). Given that the app is still in beta stage (early beta judging by the amount of features and options), you do not benefit from any sort of information regarding the upload process (transfer speed, duration of the task, progress bar, etc.).

It would be nice to have an activity log to consult in order to see the items you shared and who benefited from them.

The maximum size of the data you can send is 300MB. If you try to add an item exceeding this value you will be displayed a message informing you that the task will not be completed because of the size limit. However, we noticed no restrictions regarding the number of files you can send or the traffic you are allotted. Also, we found no details about the expiration date of the data on the servers once the download completes.

The widget comes with some entries affecting images. You can enable auto-rotate an resize of the photos, but there are no options in connection with these features, giving you no control over either of the process.

If you are not inconvenienced, you can keep the widget permanently at hand by setting it to stay on top of all windows. Its context menu features the option to change your password. Unfortunately, no other account-related settings are available.

SendGenie is labeled as beta and it shows. A list of improvements is not too difficult to compile even if you are an average user. Hopefully we’ll see a feature-rich version 1.0 that fulfills the needs of the average user.

The Good

It makes available a very easy way to start sending the files. You can share the data with multiple recipients at once thanks to the support for contacts.

The Bad

The application is at the beginning of the road and it is marked as such. It will be improved along its way to the first stable version.

The Truth

SendGenie is still work in development. There are many of options to be added and the documentation is inexistent at this point. But there is plenty of potential to capitalize on. The entire sharing process is extremely simple as all you have to do is practically drag the items you want to send and choose the recipients of the delivery.

Note: SenGenie is still in beta stage and, as such Softpedia awards it with the default 3-star rating.
