The siege continues, and as long as viruses, spyware and other threats won't cease to exist, the programs used to counter these threats will have their place here. Even more, this is a place on the front row, if not the first one, and I am not the one to say this, but the ever increasing antivirus sales.

What I have here for you now is a program called VirusRescue, and it won't save viruses, but save you and your computer from viruses instead...or at least that's what every antivirus claims to do. Its latest version is 3.0.1, and the version I have installed is a shareware limited to being a "scanner only" tool, so you won't be able to clean your system until you buy it, the price required being 29.95$. The size of the installation package is 4.4MB and the program proved very easy to setup and get up on its feet, this meaning only one thing for our story's flow: the time has come for the interface and features to enter the scene!

Autumn starts turning the city into a gray one, and this color is OK with me, but I know a lot of people get depressions when all leaves are fallen on the ground, weather gets really cold, it's foggy in the morning and starts raining more and more often. After all, this is autumn in a lot of areas, and we have to live with it. Despite all this, I am sure that VirusRescue's interface won't give you any dark thoughts, because what I see here is an excellent modern looking, shiny gray interface. The areas we have to check are four in number, and their names are Home, Reports, Scheduler and Options.

I really like the fact that this program doesn't try to think for me and scan my computer without asking. As usual, my advice is to update the threats database and then scan your computer. The system scan that I performed was pretty slow, despite the claim that this program performs ultra-high speed scanning. In the end, I think that what matters is the detection rate and reliability of the program, and while I don't have a threats library to check the first, I can tell you that the program didn't crash at all, it didn't make my computer crawl, but the amount of memory taken is pretty high (around 65MB).

The first area lets you check the program statistics and start a system scan, same as it usually happens with all programs of this category. After updating the program, I was able to see that there are almost 115,000 threats that can be detected by VirusRescue.

The Reports area gives you information about the previously performed scans inside the Activity Log Archive screen, while the Ignore List Manager present here displays a list of the items you have chosen to be ignored during the scan.

The Scheduler allows you to schedule the database update and full system scans fast and easy, while the last area of the program handles its settings. There isn't much to be said here, because the General and Scan screens have only a few options each, very easy to understand and change.

It was a pleasure reviewing this program and I can only hope you'll find it useful in your fight against all those pieces of code in the wild threatening your computer's and data integrity.

The Good

VirusRescue is an interesting choice for searching and removing unwanted guests from your computer, and even for protecting you all around the clock. Its interface is excellent, easy to use and the price of the program is fair.

The Bad

I would like to have more scanning modes in the future and more flexible options, and the last thing that I would like to get is a different trial version, because you can't check this program's cleaning and protection features at work before buying it.

The Truth

VirusRescue's shareware version won't rescue from viruses, but at least you can detect them. Despite the fact that I don't like programs that offer such limited shareware/trial/demo versions, this time it was a little different. I know you can find better than this, but trying this can't harm, so go ahead and try it for yourselves!
