Using pcGuard correctly can actually be beneficial

It's not just another computer manager. pcGuardIT tells you all about the goings on or going on's of what's behind the scenes and inside your PC. With their new looking PC managing interface, you can view application, security and system logs. As it so claims, it's the "ultimate PC observer." For those admins who have too many machines to monitor, pcGuardIT can help.

Another way to checkup on your machine

This is a tool mostly for admins who can't reach every single server in a given day. For some, servers can be in different locations and getting to them can be a hassle. Sometimes you have so many machines that it'll be a ridiculous idea to manually go to each one and check on it's functionality. Instead of opening up your computer manager, just click on Sunset software's new application and you can see every log file that's automatically stored in the system.

You can check out any of the following system 'events, errors, warnings and information logs'. By right clicking on any of the following logs, you can get an in depth detailed view of where your system hiccups.

pcGuardIT gives you the extra option of scheduling an e-mail logfile of your system so you don't have to waste the extra time checking it yourself. If you need to keep your machine running and want to see what it's up to, this function is useful. But really this function becomes unecessary if you've got it rigged up to send you email updates since dates are automatically included.

It's got a drop down menu allowing an easy switch to and from the main log files in the system and the program's interface is similar to your own "computer manager", but it's got a more aesthetically pleasing sky blue color to it... Aside from that, it's pretty much the same.

When reviewing a 1.0 release, it's a little hard to remember that this is version number 1. So I'll try to be kind.

You can prioritize by "type, source, category, event#, user, and urgent". But, if you try to arrange them by the dates they occurred after changing their order, you're stuck. But really this function becomes unecessary if you've got it rigged up to send you email updates since dates are automatically included.

Comparing it to my own computer manager (right-click My Computer, then click on Manage), I've noticed some pretty useful features that have been left out of pcGuardIT.

You can't double click on an event to bring it up in its own window, so you can only look at it by constantly holding down the right click button, this gets tiresome after the sixth or seventh event you're looking at. The lack of a personal window doesn't let you easily copy and paste information for further use.

The Good

Managing servers in different locations can be a hard task, but with this handy tool, it's

The Bad

Aside from its aesthetic value, it's only 1.0. You can see that there has been a lot of work put into this application, but it still needs a little more. There are a lot of things that your own PC manager offers that pcGuardIT doesn't. A 'Help' button would be a wonderful addition.

The Truth

Initially I thought that this product was meant for personal use on my own PC, but that's far from the truth. This is an application for some admins and users out there who can't verify every client or server machine that they have. This program will save you the time spent wandering from machine to machine. It'll identify the trouble spots so you can focus your time more effectively. It will probably still go through some growing pains, but a very practical application for those in the field.
