  • Helps to hide and protect a folder and its files/subfolders with a password.

Privacy has become an issue a long time ago. Everybody is struggling to keep their secrets secret and away from inquisitive eyes. What methods do you use to keep your most important files for yourself? Personally, I tried lots of softwares, but I could not find anything satisfying enough.

Browsing the Internet, I came across an application that bragged about protecting the folders. And the developer asked no fee in return. I said to myself that this may be something like Microsoft's Private Folder which proved to be a pretty good application, despite one or two drawbacks and a few complaints.

Folder Locker is a new software on the market (version 1.5) developed by Softpen. The software is priceless in the sense that it is freeware and you will not have to pay a dime for using it. The looks of the application are pretty unusual for such a simple software. Usually, the developers of such applications aren't really into making the program look good (or they are simply unable to draw a beautiful interface) and emphasize the utility and reliability of the software.

This time things are different, and you can clearly see that both aesthetics and functionality are on the same level (and a shiny spot that is). The metallic aspect of the application is in tone with this year's software trend.

Do not imagine that the program is complicated and intricate as you do not have to install it; a simple double-click on the executable will launch it. The first application window presents the user with a choice: Lock Folder and Unlock Folder, depending on your needs. After you have made your choice, linger for a while to read the text below the options, as the developer presents the guarantee of the application. Having read that, you are now ready to press the Agree button to proceed to the next screen.

The three steps folder protection method provided here runs as follows: first of all, select the folder you want to protect. Next step is applying a password to the protection; you will have to enter it twice, the second time being the confirmation that you have written it correctly the first time.

If you think you won't be able to remember it, you can also enter a phrase or word as password hint describing it or making it "pop" into your mind. Once you have done that, you can push the Protect button. Now take a look at the folder. You will notice that it is a bit changed and that the extension is __sbx. That's what protects it. Also check its size. You will notice a slight shrinking of the folder. That's because the software compresses the files and applies the password to the archive. I know it sounds familiar and makes you think at WinZip, but there are some differences, like the fact that Folder Locker is smaller and free.

I have to tell you that for locking and unlocking the folders you do not necessarily have to launch the application. Right-clicking the folder gives you access to a much faster method of encrypting them. The right-click menu is enriched by the Lock Folder option and Unlock (for the already protected files). Choosing one of these options will automatically open Folder Locker.

Be careful with the software as some important files should not be protected with this software. And here is what the developer warns us about: "Important note: DO NOT try to protect windows system folders, Documents and Settings or current user folder. If you have any important files and sub folder needs protection, then move them to a folder and protect the new created folder."

The Good

The software is easy to use, has a very nicely drawn interface and is free.

The Bad

Maybe the developer should have offered a stronger guarantee for using the application. After reading the disclaimer and the important note posted on the home site, I am a bit reluctant to using it. It just diminished my confidence.

The Truth

I am glad that there are such applications available for free on the market. My opinion is that they are purely stimulating the progress and keeping the competition alert.

Here are some snapshots of the application in action:
