The last LibreOffice component is indispensable to any office suite that takes itself seriously – LibreOffice Base, a database management tool (similar to Microsoft Access).

Base enables users to create multipurpose databases with tables, queries, forms and reports that can be further embedded in documents. For instance, LibreOffice Writer has a feature that fetches address book information using Base as data source.

Databases can be built and maintained for storing user information (e.g. employees, clients), gathering data and analyzing statistics, creating financial reports, and other circumstances. It can be basically used in any field that needs a solid data management system.

LibreOffice's installation is covered at Writer's review page. The office suite contains Writer (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet tool), Impress (presentation tool), Draw (graphics editor) and Math (formula editor), alongside Base and optional modules. Any of these components can be excluded from the setup.

Base's interface is pretty tidy, considering the complexity of a database application. With the help of a startup wizard, the tool can be instructed to create a new database, open an existing file, or connect to an existing one via JDBC, Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird address book, Microsoft Access, spreadsheet, dBASE, text, MySQL, PostgreSQL and other sources.

The main application window has multiple panels dedicated to quickly selecting a database's primary elements (tables, queries, forms, reports), initializing tasks and viewing their descriptions, as well as filling information.

As far as tables are concerned, it is possible to create them in design view by specifying field names and properties together with data types, build a view by pointing out the tables and fields names to remain visible, as well as apply table samples as baseline for following table customization (requires Java). Macros may be executed and managed, while table indexes can be viewed.

Queries can be created in SQL view (by entering SQL commands directly) or design view by specifying filters, input tables, field names and sorting/grouping properties. Similar to table mode, queries can be created step by step with the help of an approachable wizard. It is possible to insert tables or other queries. A macro manager is supported.
The database form creator is quite extensive in its configuration set. It resembles an ordinary graphics editor, where form controls turn design mode on and off, as well as enable checkbox, text box, formatted field, push or option button, list or combo box, and label field. Extra controls include a spin button, scroll bar, image button and control, along with date and time field. Wizards can be either activated or deactivated.
Most remaining features are shared by LibreOffice's other components, namely Writer, Impress, Calc and Draw. The database form creator has preset styles and formatting attributes, standard drawing tools and formula editor, among others. Projects can be saved to file types like ODT, DOC, DOCX, HTML, PDF and RTF.

Reports can be made from scratch by setting the record source, controls, and control parameters. It is possible to insert headers and footers, page numbers, date and time stamps, report controls, pictures and shapes, rearrange and resize shapes in the design, edit font properties, as well as run and organize macros.

When it comes to Base tools, the application implements functions for designing relationships between tables, managing user settings and changing database passwords, filtering tables to make them visible, as well as writing SQL statements for immediate execution. Just like the other LibreOffice modules, Base implements macros, an extension manager, XML filter settings, along with toolbar customization options.

As it was already discussed in the previous reviews for LibreOffice's components, these share most of the program settings. When it comes to Base, it is possible to enable connection pooling as well as to create new database links.

The Good

Base has a neatly structured interface that users can easily navigate to create databases with tables, queries, forms and reports. They can be later attached to various documents.

The app contains preset table definitions and a separate module for creating forms using familiar drawing and text tools. It connects to Microsoft Access databases without issues. Keyboard shortcuts can be reconfigured for all types of commands.

LibreOffice is cross-platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) and compatible with all popular Windows versions, including 8 and 8.1 (both 32 bit and 64 bit). User documentation and multiple languages are integrated. CPU and RAM usage is generally kept to a minimum level. The portable edition is Portable LibreOffice.

The Bad

The tool requires Java for working with its own databases.

Databases cannot be compiled to run standalone (EXE).

The Truth

In a nutshell, LibreOffice Base is an approachable database management app that works best when embedding its files in other documents. Since the entire suite is free, users are welcomed to test it for themselves.
