Microsoft will officially retire Windows XP on April 8

Microsoft goes on with its plans to retire Windows XP this year, so the 12-year-old operating system will go dark in no less than 70 days, which means that users still running it need to pick their next destination as soon as possible.

Windows XP is currently installed on more than 28 percent of computers worldwide, according to third-party statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications, but Microsoft hopes to cut its market share to approximately 13 percent by April.

While this goal indeed seems pretty impossible to achieve, users are still reluctant from migrating to another operating system, pretty much because Microsoft’s number one option, Windows 8, is often considered a rather confusing choice.

Analysts believe that Windows XP would die completely once Windows 9 sees daylight, but only in case the next full Windows release indeed has what it takes to please the majority of users.
