ASUS is one of the companies that continue to bet big on Windows 8 tablets, even though early sales of this particular sector aren’t quite impressive.

ASUS chief Jerry Shen told the Wall Street Journal that the company is looking to develop new and smaller Windows 8 tablets, possibly below $300 (€230), that would hit the market later this year.

The 7- and 8-inch tablet market is getting more crowded, as Microsoft itself is also rumored to step in this particular industry sector.

Rumor has it that Microsoft plans to launch the second-generation Surface tablet, including an 8-inch unit, next month at the BUILD developer conference, while sales are projected to begin in a few months.

What’s more, the first major upgrade for Windows 8, internally codenamed Windows Blue, is likely to pack plenty of improvements aimed at smaller tablets, including a new 50-50 Snap View mode compatible with lower resolutions.
