Peer-to-peer technology applied to live streaming

BitTorrent released a new application, BitTorrent Live, designed to let you stream live from your computer, while maintaining a low network load. The same torrent theory applies, but the peers connected to the stream send out the data with a delay of several seconds.

The released application is a small executable, available for Windows, Mac and Linux, that installs in a jiffy and does not require rebooting your computer or re-launching the web browser. It’ll sit in the tray area and do its job from there.

Currently, the application is in beta stage of development and some quirks still have to be figured out, as we learned ourselves from the constant crashing we witnessed.

The video above is an interview with the inventor of the technology, Bram Cohen, who explains how it all works.
