Microsoft today issued some new statistics concerning malware rates across the world, revealing that Canadians are far more efficient when it comes to blocking cyberthreats than any other country on the globe.

A report by IT Business Canada shows that out of 1,000 scanned computers, only 2.7 Canadian systems are infected, while the global rate averages at 7 infected machines per 1,000 scanned.

What’s more, the new figures demonstrate that Canada managed to lower infections significantly since the third quarter of 2011, from 6 infections per 1,000 systems to just 2.7.

Tim Rains, director of trustworthy computing at Microsoft, says Canadians’ advanced computer knowledge helps them stay on the safe side and praises the local IT education programs.

“Canadians are pretty savvy about using the Internet, so that is useful. And user education is pretty good here, at least from a malware infection (perspective),” Rains said.
