Microsoft will soon launch the new Windows 8.1 OS, but some OEMs are still trying to boost their sales by going for the much more affordable and increasingly user-friendly Ubuntu.

Dell, for example, is selling the XPS 13 Ultrabook Laptop with a pre-installed copy of Ubuntu, even though Windows 8.1 is just around the corner and the company even has a strategic deal with Microsoft.

“The Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop is based on Ubuntu 12.04LTS, the Long Term Support version of the cloud developer-friendly operating system,” Dell states on its official website.

Redmond has recently granted a $2 billion (€1.5 billion) loan to support Dell’s efforts to go private, so one might expect the company to go all in on Windows.

As The Var Guy reports, Dell is trying to boost shares by expanding its Ubuntu offering across the world, with no company now launching new retail stores in China selling computers with a preinstalled copy of the Linux distribution.
