Microsoft and Ericsson have just signed a takeover agreement over Mediaroom, the software giant’s IPTV platform currently used by “lots” of TV operators around the world.
The company said in a statement that Ericsson has pledged to continue investment in Mediaroom, while Microsoft would switch focus to Xbox, a much more popular service that’s playing a key role in the overall long-term strategy of the Windows maker.
While financial terms were not disclosed, Microsoft says that Mediaroom is a very successful technology that’s currently powering 22 million set-top boxes in 11 million subscriber households.
“With the sale of Mediaroom, Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want – whether on a console, phone, PC or tablet,” Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Marketing, Strategy and Business for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, said in a statement.
