The desktop represents your virtual room, and just like the one in real life, it can easily get filled with junk if you don’t tend to it from time to time.

Hiding desktop icons is not all just dusting junk under the carpet, and we constantly use it in tutorial clips. You can do this with what Windows has to offer by default, but there are also faster alternatives.

Hiding desktop icons in a couple of seconds

Step 1: Download and run AutoHideDesktopIcons.

Note: Try not to panic when you see the Timer progress bar rapidly emptying. This is normal, because the application, as the name suggests, hides icons automatically.

Step 2: Choose general Preferences so that icons automatically hide when Windows starts, disable functionality, or even choose to hide the taskbar.

Step 3: Select one or more options through which to make icons visible again.

Step 4: Press More Options for a few ways to manually hide icons, such as pressing the middle mouse button.

Note: It can get a bit tricky to create a balance between on and off. For instance, you can’t use the middle mouse button to toggle states.

Step 5: Adjust the timer between 3 and 100 seconds for an automated process.

This function can be triggered normally via the context menu. There’s also a tweak to be made from this Windows feature. Other options are well-integrated in more advanced programs, such as Fences. Regardless of the case, you need to spend some time until you find the one that best suits your needs.
